DONCASTER RACECOURSEWednesday, September 7, 2011 - JULIE KRONE WINS LEGENDS RACERACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE WELCOME TO GOING The going at Jon Pullin, Clerk of the Course at “Friday is forecast to be dry and Saturday should also be predominantly dry. There should also be a rise in temperatures on Friday and Saturday. “Today was a good start to the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival. The rain we had early on just helped to ease the going slightly and it was a nice position from which to start a four-day festival.” CROWD Today’s crowd came to just over 6,000 - a similar figure to that achieved in 2010. It looked as if The Blue Banana had the race in the bag when he came with a strong run in the final quarter mile to take up the running, but the Brian Meehan-trained gelding, the mount of Shane Kelly, ruined his chance by hanging badly left in the final furlong. Buick kept Ghostwriting running straight up the centre of the course and he stayed ion resolutely to get up and score by a length and a quarter. The winning trainer was not present on Town Moor today but the successful jockey said: "He went down with me very keenly, so I wanted to get him relaxed and out of the wind. "He worked his way nicely into the race and is a real little street fighter. He loves a battle and really deserves the success he gets. He is as tough as they come and he really dug deep for me. "You want to get cover with the wind out there and you want to delay your challenge - it’s a big help if you can get a tow for as long as you can. "It’s nearly perfect ground out there, near to perfect good ground." GOING NEWS AFTER THE FIRST RACE JOCKEY VIEWS William Buick, jockey of the winner Ghostwriting, said: “Good.” Shane Kelly, partner of second-placed The Blue Banana, said: “Good.” Richard Hughes, on board third Silvestre De Sousa, rider of Es Que Love, said: “There is a bit of give in it but I would say it is good.” Kieran O’Neill, partner of Wolfgang, said: “It is lovely ground. There are no excuses.” David Nolan, rider of Jessie’s Spirit, said: “Perfect.” Robert Winston, rider of See Clearly, said: “Just on the easy side.” Phillip Makin, on board Indepub, said: “It is on the easy side, they are making a print.” Paul Pickard, jockey of Graham Gibbons, rider of Nameitwhatyoulike, said: “Good.” Billy Cray, partner of Man Of My Word, said: “Good.” FURTHER GOING CHANGE The going was changed to Good from Good, Good to firm in places after the first race. A number of horses were cantering behind him but they never got by him. “He is a pretty decent horse. He ran well in the Richmond Stakes and the form of that race is working out very, very well. “Once it became clear that no one wanted to go on, we didn’t want to turn it into one of those silly races and our horse probably wants seven furlongs anyway. There was no point waiting around for the others - we could only go for it. “I don’t know what we will do with him from here. Mentally, we might give him a bit of a break and leave him until next year but, if the right race pops up, then we might give him one more start.” Talking about Census, who runs in Saturday’s Ladbrokes St Leger, Hannon continued: “Census is working fine at the moment. He is just doing his routine canters now and we will bring him up on Saturday morning and go from there. He is in good form.” Referring to some of the stable’s other leading lights, Hannon said: “Most of the two-year-old form this season seems to revolve around Harbour Watch. He is in both the “We have left both Dubawi Gold and Dick Turpin in the Prix du Moulin on Sunday. Dubawi Gold is the more likely runner, although it is still an option for Dick Turpin. They should both like the ground.” Richard Hughes added: “Frankie asked me what I was going to do at the start and I said that I would rather have some cover in this wind, but Eureka jumped quick so I let him roll along and saved a little bit. “He was there to be beaten and they could have gone by him at the furlong-pole. I would say that he would have still been in front if we had carried on for another 100 yards.” SECOND RACE RESULT 2.35pm NAPOLEONS £15,000 guaranteed, 6f. Dettori timed his challenge to perfection on the four-year-old to come with a strong late run in the final furlong and overhaul Dinkum Diamond by half a length. Winning trainer George Baker had gone to Kempton to saddle a runner but his wife Candida was present at She said: “The ground came right for Humidor today and he was very relaxed. He can be quite tricky going down to the start and plant himself, but went down perfectly with Frankie today. “Hopefully, we have the measure of him now. Whitsbury is such a great place to train and that has been very helpful. His owners the Khans have also been incredibly supportive. “I am chuffed to bits. This is our biggest winner, although Belgian Bill ran well when second in “The track suited him today and having Frankie ride him helped a lot, lets be honest. Good horses need the best jockeys on top. “With the strong headwind, the plan was to cover him up and come with a run in the final furlong. That is what Frankie did and It has worked out perfectly.” Frankie Dettori added: “That was the first time I have ridden the horse but Mrs Baker told me exactly what to do. She said that there would be plenty of pace and I knew that the front runners were at a disadvantage in this headwind, whereas this horse likes to come from behind. “His fifth at Goodwood was decent and my plan was to get him to run into the first three but it all fell right and there was only one winner from a long way out. He would have been a good thing at “I think that the wind will play a big part if you are on a horse that is keen - it will be a great disadvantage. You could see from Richard Hughes in the second race that you can make the running if the horse relaxes. It’s definitely going to throw up a few different results.” The third Scarbrough Stakes (Listed) STUMBLE DID NOT COST MEDICEAN MAN THE RACE Trainer Jeremy Gask was philosophical after 11/4 favourite Medicean Man’s third in the feature £40,000 Scarbrough Stakes over five furlongs at He said: “The stumble at the start did not help him but I don’t think it made a huge difference. “He’s better when he has less of a space between his races. I have had to get after him a bit at home to keep him fit and he’s best when fresh. “I think we will go to Newbury now for a Group Three (the Dubai International World Trophy over five furlongs on Saturday, September 17).” THIRD RACE RESULT 3.10pm SCARBROUGH STAKES (LISTED) £40,000 guaranteed, 5f. Krone, who rode three winners at Redcar in 1992 on her only previous visit to Krone said on unsaddling: “I had a lot of horse galloping down to the post - he was really strong and loved the going. I had a lot of things to sort out in my mind, like where the good path was and what the trainer said. Michael Dickinson and I walked the course earlier today and that really helped a lot. “I was waiting a bit because he was quite keen and strong, but I am not really fit enough to take much of that away from him so I just let him be natural and he took me to the wire. “I think I would be better if I rode the race again but, the one race after such a long time was hard. “All the way from being at home with Richard Mandella and Eoin Harty helping me get ready, to all of the horses that I have got on - I can’t help but thank them too. "What a great beast today and the whole cause and reason to be here has been amazing. It’s interesting because you teach people to ride at the racing college and, if something happens, you take care of them. You guys have it from all of the angles and it was a really good raceday with a good reason for it.” After collecting her tophy, Krone reflected: “Let’s be honest - I was on the best horse today. I can tell you that because I know, with my fitness level, he only had half a rider today. “I saw the eighth of a mile (furlong) pole and thought we are nearly there. I just gave him a couple of swats to keep him going and I tried not to bounce around too much.” Speaking about her training routine, ahead of today’s race, Krone commented: “I have been riding for the past 40 days, for both Richard Mandela and Eoin Harty. At Richard’s, I was riding two-year-olds and they certainly help to get you fit, both physically and mentally, while at Eoin’s I was breezing horses over six and seven furlongs.” Krone visited the Krone turned the chance to appear on hit US TV show Survivor to ride at She joked: “I could get hung or shot on Survivor so I thought I’d better go ride in a race! “They just rang me up. I know about the wonderful work that Jack Berry and the Injured Jockeys’ Fund do, so I was delighted to be involved. “This was my first ride since a Legends race at Santa Anita and everyone has been such great sports. Everyone complemented me passing the post and they even wanted to tell my goggles weren’t straight when I pulled up!” Today’s race was run in aid of two Yorkshire-based charity projects - the IJF House That Jack Built in Malton and the redevelopment at the JULIE KRONE AT Julie Krone’s participation in today’s fourth race, the Clipper Logistics Leger Legends Classified Stakes 3.45pm), has attracted plenty of media interest. The American, the most successful woman jockey to date, joins 15 other former professional jockeys in the race which raises funds for the Injured Jockeys Fund “Oaksey House” (the house that Jack built) in the North and the Northern Racing College, which is based just outside Doncaster. Krone, fresh from walking the course this morning, said: “I guess the main thing is to make sure there is a little bit for the finish - both horse and rider! I feel very fit.” She has decided where the best ground is and will utilise the knowledge if at all possible. It was marvellous for Julie to come over from Michael Dickinson, the former trainer in Charlie Swann, who was the winner of last year’s Legends race and finished second on Skyfire in this year’s renewal, said: “It was great. I got a good ride but the winner was an improver.” George Duffield, on the third home Dialogue, declared: “It went very well - he just didn’t quite get the trip. I think I would have given the winner a good race over seven. That last furlong just found us out.” Ray Cochrane, fourth on Inpursuitoffree, commented: “It was very nice (to be back race riding). I tracked George (Duffield) all the way and the horse ran lovely in fourth. It is nice to have a good ride after all this time. I will have to see how my neck is before committing to next year.” Gay Kelleway, on the the sixth Conducting, remarked: “I probably did the wrong thing coming up the rail looking for better ground so I was running on my own a bit but it seemed to suit him and he performed well.” Ernie Johnson, on the eighth Whitechapel, said: “It was really good fun.” Steve Smith-Eccles, on ninth Wisecraic, said: “The horse jumped off and was travelling well for half a mile, but he has his own mind. I gave him a smack and he ran for another furlong but he was beaten an long way out so I let him coast home. I have learnt something today. When you retire, stay retired!” Dale Gibson on 10th Ginger Grey said: “I think Julie had a bit in hand basically - my horse probably looks after himself a bit and wants some headgear on. I was pleased with my fitness - I only had a little blow. The main thing is that we have raised lots of money for two great charities and everyone has had a good day. Luke Harvey, on 11th Kalahaag, said: “That was absolutely brilliant, though you forget how unfit you get. At least I didn’t fall off. I was quite pleased the trainer (David Nicholls) wasn’t here, the last time I met him he had me in a headlock at the Lesters.” Kevin Darley, 12th on Tribal Myth, declared: “It was great fun - they went very quick early on, for us old guys anyway! My horse had brief show at half-way but just could not live with the pace - he needs a mile and quarter. It was a great result - they brought Julie Krone over and she has done the business.” Norman Williamson - 13th on Aquilifer - said: “It was good - he travelled well to the three-furlong pole and then did not pick up - the ground was probably a bit soft but he came back in one piece.” Graham Bradley, 14th on Ocean Legend, commented: “I really enjoyed it - a great result for the executive with Julie winning it. My horse just didn’t fire on the day unfortunately.” Jamie Osborne, 15th on Ahlawy, said: “It was an improvement on last year when I was last - this year I beat one! The winner was partnered by Phillip Makin and returned at 8/1 while Louis The Pious was ridden by Frankie Dettori and returned at 9/2. Ryan said: “They are both three-year-olds and I hate having to run them against each other, but there just aren’t many opportunities at this time of the season. “I thought there was not a pound between them and that is how it has worked out. “I was worried that the ground might have dried out a bit for Lightning Cloud. It was good ground earlier in the day, but has been drying out through the afternoon. “There is a good seven-furlong handicap at Phillip Makin added: “He was quite inexperienced the last time I rode him and he just has a habit of pulling up when he gets to the front. I thought that he had nearly got out of it - he travelled like a good horse today and come there swinging but has bolted to the far side. “He was still going forwards and I think that if I had tried fighting it out of him, he would have been beaten. He still had plenty left in the tank. “He travelled like a good horse today - you couldn’t have left him for any longer - and he has definitely improved since I last rode him.
