CHELTENHAM RACECOURSEWednesday, March 12, 2012 - FESTIVAL NEWS & MUCH MORE THE FESTIVAL 2012, RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE LADIES DAY, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14 CROWD FIGURES- SECOND DAY ATTENDANCE UP The crowd for the second day was 53,015, compared with 50,128 last year. “This was the biggest second-day crowd since St Patrick’s Day fell on the Wednesday in 2007,” said Edward Gillespie, the course’s Managing Director. “And those who were here saw history being made, with Nicky Henderson setting a new record number of winners for the meeting. “We were delighted to be almost 3,000 up on last year, and there are another two great days to come. Betfred Gold Cup day [Friday] is already sold out but tickets are still available for all enclosures tomorrow [Thursday].” The crowd for the first day has been revised upwards by 1,000, putting attendance for the first two days at 108,486, compared with 103,446 in 2011. TOTEPOOL FIGURE The Totepool cash turnover on the second day of the Cheltenham Festival was £2,385,474, up 1% on the corresponding day’s figure for 2011 of £2,360,457. Chase and Hurdle Courses - Good, Good to Soft in places Simon Claisse, Clerk of the Course and Director of Racing at Cheltenham Racecourse, said: “The ground seemed to ride on the slow side of good yesterday which was our anticipation after a three-week watering regime. “The temperatures yesterday and today have been cooler than anticipated last weekend which has been really helpful. It is overcast now and we may see a bit of sun this afternoon. The heavy dew yesterday helped retain the moisture as did a lesser dew this morning. “I have left the going as Good, Good to Soft in places - my sense is it may ride marginally quicker than yesterday. “The New Course that we drop onto tomorrow has Good ground at the moment and we will be watering that course overnight just to make sure we keep that on the slow side of good for Thursday and Friday. We will put seven to eight millimetres of water on it from 6.15pm - the process will take us until 2am on Thursday. The New Course has been quicker because we did not water it in October or November. “It will remain cool until the sun comes out - it is 8 or 9 degrees Celsius if it is cloudy and 13 or 14 degrees Celsius if the sun pops out.” GoingStick Readings 7.3 Tuesday morning 7.6 Wednesday morning THE FESTIVAL 2012, RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE LADIES DAY, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14 NON-RUNNERS AT 1PM 1.30pm Diamond Jubillee National Hunt Chase no3. On Tuesday, Quevega added her name to a select list when she became the ninth horse to record as many as four victories at the Cheltenham Festival. On Thursday, two more horses, Big Buck’s and Albertas Run, will attempt to match the achievement. Quevega was only the third horse, after Golden Miller and Baulking Green, to win the same race four times, and only the second to win it four times in a row. Big Buck’s will attempt to join her in the latter club in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle. The other four-timer seeker is Albertas Run, who won the Royal & SunAlliance Chase in 2008 before his Ryanair Chase victories at the last two Festivals. The five-time Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Golden Miller reigns supreme. The first to reach four was the durable and high-class chaser Dudley, the best specialist two-miler of the 1920s. Only Golden Miller, Arkle, Istabraq and Quevega compiled their sequences at successive Festivals. Big Buck’s, winner of the past three Ladbrokes World Hurdles, would join them. And the first mare he acquired from their stud, Fatima III, is dam of Sprinter Sacre. The Racing Post’s front-page picture and headline ‘Rock star’ conveys the message. ‘It’s Ruby Tuesday’ says The Times, ‘Ruby rocked’ offers The Sun, while the Daily Star exclaims ‘Noel rocks’ and ‘Ruby swotted’ (referring to defeat for Ruby Walsh on Hurricane Fly). ‘It’s all Rock ‘n’ roll as Noel hits a high’, says the Daily Mail, which includes a Festival scoreboard showing ‘UK six winners, Ireland one winner’, an unlikely scenario yesterday morning. Rock On Ruby’s trainer, Paul Nicholls, insisted yesterday’s triumph was a team effort, and the Gloucestershire Echo claims ‘Small Fry central to Nicholls’ slam’ which gives due credit to Harry Fry. For a two-page spread that sums up the first day top marks goes to the Daily Mirror, which has a report and pictures on six of the seven races and a headline ‘Ruby is a jewell (no marks for spelling)’. Noel Fehily’s deserved moment in the spotlight is picked up in The Independent by James Lawton, who refers to the jockey’s quiet style and past injuries under a headline that claims ‘a glorious ride after years suffering in silence’. Greg Wood in the Guardian brings a wry element to the big-race result noting ‘Nicholls rides to bookies’ rescue’, which must be a rarity. The Daily Star’s headline writers make a play on the name of today’s sportingbet.com Queen Mother Champion Chase favourite Sizing Europe with a headline that screams ‘Eur-eka’. It follows up with ‘Siz (sic) matters in the Queen Mum Chase’. Racing Plus’s James Willoughby assesses whether the favourite’s rivals can cut him down to size, while Bev Swingell of the Daily Express calls the horse ‘Euro star’ The Sun’s Templegate (Steve Jones) opposes Sizing Europe, and under a headline that will worry racegoers - ‘Rain is forecast’ - he puts forward Finian’s Rainbow as a likely winner. ‘Zara outfit’s good to fur-m’ says The Sun, a reference to the sleek trim that adorned the royal’s first-day outfit. ‘An elegant grey ...’ is the Daily Mail’s assessment. The deaths of three horses on the first day was a sad note for every fan and follower of racing. ‘Ricci horse death mars festival fun’ says the Daily Mirror, a reference to the loss of the Rich Ricci-owned Scotsirish. Away from the track racing finds itself in the news pages through the arrest yesterday of former Sun editor Rebekah Brooks and her husband, Charlie, the racehorse trainer. They faced further questioning over phone and computer hacking, and The Sun itself does not spare the couple, claiming ‘Sun chief and aristocrat husband held in dawn raid’. The Daily Telegraph, which employs Charlie Brooks as a columnist, says he ‘had to miss his first pint of festival Guinness’. The Independent gives up half its front page to a shot of yesterday’s racecourse action, but under a picture of Mr and Mrs Brooks it headlines ‘Heavy going in the Cotswolds’. The Guardian, which was alone in keeping racing off the front page on Tuesday, does not hold back today, devoting most of its cover to the arrested couple and giving a bold mast to its sports-pages coverage of The Festival. Changing themes The Daily Mail’s money-market man Geoff Foster says ‘Bookies bet on a festival thriller’, and then provides an analysis of their share prices during a week when customers go into overdrive. Buying bookies’ shares is one bway for punters to get their money back. BRITS LEAD THE WAY ON OPENING DAY WITH SIX HOME-TRAINED WINNERS With Hurricane Fly having disappointed favourite-backers in the Stan James Champion Hurdle it was left to his stable-mate Quevega to fulfil Irish hopes on the first day of the Cheltenham Festival and the great mare duly obliged to record her fourth straight victory at However, she was the sole Irish-trained winner on the card with the score standing at 6-1 to the home team after the first day. Last year, Irish-trained runners won a record 13 of the 27 races run throughout the four days. Prior to The Festival's extension to four days in 2005, the previous record was eight wins in 1958 (when 18 races were run). There was better news for With Beat Hollow having only recently been transferred to Ballylinch from Banstead Manor Stud in Newmarket, the Juddmonte-bred Cinders And Ashes’ victory in the William Hill Supreme Novices’ Hurdle marked a great triumph for British breeding, as did the success of Alfie Sherrin, who is by Britain’s leading National Hunt sire for 2011/12, Kayf Tara. Despite being trained and owned by Irishmen Jonjo O’Neill and JP McManus, Alfie Sherrin was prepared for his Cheltenham win near to the course at MARKET MOVERS All eyes will be on hot favourites Sizing Europe and Grands Crus as the day’s two big chases, the sportingbet.com Queen Mother Champion Chase and the RSA Chase, are run at Simon Clare of Coral said: “Grands Crus in the RSA Chase is 11/8 from 13/8 after the big-hitters have steamed in and Sizing Europe is very solid in the Queen Mother and is 4/5 from 10/11. He probably is better on more testing ground but you can get away with it a bit over four miles. “A P (McCoy) had ridden him for his chase wins and always liked the horse. He wanted the best for the horse so helped to get J T (McNamara) to ride him. “Ever since he won his first chase I’ve said he was a National type of horse. He could go for the Irish National this season and hopefully he will be an Aintree horse next year. “It’s a massive boost for the yard to have a winner here, people notice it. “It’s very, very special. It''s great just to have a runner here, let alone a winner. It’s a very good feeling.” First race - Diamond Jubilee National Hunt Chase Winner Quotes RODDIS AND HIS MATESSHARE TEA TRIUMPH Owner Nigel Roddis took the gamble of selling shares in Teaforthree to some of his friends, but the decision paid off when the horse won today’s Diamond Jubilee National Hunt Chase. Roddis, who is part of the Racing For Change team that is attempting to broaden racing’s promotion of itself, initially organised a deal to lease the horse from former owner Gearoid Costelloe, partner of trainer Rebecca Curtis, but when that arrangement ended he stepped in to become an owner himself. He said: “I leased the horse last year for Soccer AM [Sky Channel’s Saturday morning football programme] which wanted to get some publicity to a new audience and felt a racehorse would be a good outlet. When the lease expired, Soccer AM wanted to move on. “I felt he was a cracking horse, so got some mates together [to buy him] and I’m pleased to say I was proved right. “We went to Rebecca initially to get involved in a horse because she is an up and coming trainer and we felt that was the right profile.” Rider J T McNamara is one of “AP McCoy put me onto the horse - he rang me and told me to make sure I got the ride. I got the same message from Andrew McNamara and Enda Bolger. “The first time I sat on him was in the parade ring. “That’s my fourth Festival winner and they are all great, you never lose that feeling. I ride On The Fringe [for Bolger] in the Christie’s Foxhunter Chase and he should run well.” First race The Diamond Jubilee National Hunt Steeple Chase - runner-up quotes SCOTTISH NATIONAL THE LIKELY TARGET FOR HARRY THE VIKING Harry The Viking may next be making the long trip from Trainer Paul Nicholls said: “I’m very happy. Will gave him a great ride. He was always going well and stayed on strongly. He ran nicely. “He might go to Rider Will Biddick added: “That’s as good as he is, I think. He needs a flatter track and is a bit slow away from his fences on the uphills. You need to get a lead for as long as you can with him and then pick off the leader.” Biddick was later fined £650 by the stewards for changing his boots after weighing out. GRAND NATIONAL THE FUTURE Mouse Morris, trainer of third-placed Four Commanders “You couldn’t mention him in the same breath as his brother [Gold Cup winner War of Attrition] but he’s the sort who would be a Grand National horse in time. He’s a very nice horse, and a genuine one, who is a real trier. Perhaps just missing the last might have cost him a place today, but no real complaints. “I thought Nina gave him a tremendous ride. In fact, those two up front [Four Commanders and the winner Teaforthree cut out most of the pace] produced the best rides I’ve seen a couple of amateurs give their horses.” Nina Carberry, rider of third-placed Four Commanders “My lad ran a great race. He’s a terrific jumper and though he just missed the last, in fairness I think JT [McNamara, on winner Teaforthree] had a fair bit up his sleeve. And the other horse is a bit older and stronger, too. My lad’s only six.” Colin Bowe, trainer of fourth-placed Our Victoria “No complaints, delighted with her. She jumps, gallops and stays, and three others just did it a bit better than her today. She likes this good ground and the Irish National might be the race for her.” THE FESTIVAL 2012, RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE LADIES DAY, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14 NICKY Nicky NICKY JCB Triumph Hurdle 1985 First Bout, 1987 Alone Success, 1999 Katarino, 2009 Zaynar, 2010 Soldatino Stan James Champion Hurdle 1985, 1986 & 1987 See You Then, 2009 Punjabi, 2010 Binocular 1991 Remittance Man, 1993 Travado, 2000 Tiutchev, 2012 Sprinter Sacre sportingbet.com Queen Mother Champion Chase 1992 Remittance Man William Hill Supreme Novices' Hurdle 1986 River Ceiriog, 1992 Flown Cathcart Chase 1990 Brown Windsor, 1994 Raymylette, 1999 & 2000 Stormyfairweather Ladbrokes World Hurdle 1989 Rustle, 2000 Bacchanal Byrne Group Plate 1985 & 1986 The Tsarevich, 2005 Liberthine, 2006 Non So Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Chase 1990 Master Bob, 2002 The Bushkeeper, 2005 Juveigneur Vincent O'Brien 1993 Thumbs Up, 1997 Barna Boy JLT Specialty Handicap Chase 2000 RSA Chase 2005 Trabolgan Ryanair Chase 2006 Fondmort Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Handicap Chase 2006 Greenhope Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle 2009 Andytown Coral Cup 2010 Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup 2011 Long Run Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle 2011 Bobs Worth 2012 Simonsig THE FESTIVAL 2012, RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE LADIES DAY, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14 SECOND RACE QUOTES - WINNING TRAINER 41 AND COUNTING The victory of 2/1 favourite Simonsig in the Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle enabled Nicky Henderson to set a record of 41 victories at the Cheltenham Festival, passing Fulke Walwyn’s total of 40, which he equalled on Tuesday. “It’s lovely to set a new mark,” said “You can’t do it without the horses and the staff and I’ve been very lucky with both over the years. The team of owners have sent me some wonderful horses and my staff, with Corky at the helm for so many years, have looked after them wonderfully well.” The choice of race for Simonsig at the Festival was between Tuesday’s two-mile William Hill Supreme Novices’ Hurdle or the two-mile, five-furlong contest he won. “In hindsight the choice we made seems a sensible one,” added “We weren’t helped when the leader [Cotton Mill] went two out as the plan was to wait and wait and wait. But he was jumping himself to the front anyway.” Simonsig is to go over fences next season and is already 4/1 [with Paddy Power] for the “The bigger the obstacle, the better I think he’ll jump it,” said Second race The Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle - winning jockey’s quotes GERGAHTY FULL OF PRAISE FOR HIGH-CLASS SIMONSIG Favourite Simonsig cruised to a seven-length victory in the Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle to give jockey Barry Geraghty his second exciting win of the week following yesterday’s Arkle Chase victory on Sprinter Sacre. Geraghty said: “What happened at the second last didn’t matter [to him]. Company would have been nice but he jumped the second last well and then went down and popped the last. “I rode him work last Saturday week and he’s top class. He made a bit of a meal of one down the back but he’s just a bit of a baby. He’s very raw but is a lovely horse and travels so well. Asked how he compared to yesterday’s winner, he added: “You can’t compare many to Sprinter Sacre because he’s so onward and this fella is more laidback. He has the engine though as soon as you want him. I didn’t mind whether he went for the two miles or two and a half. He’s just a high-class horse and when you have a horse like that you can go where you want. “We haven’t discussed it but he’s a former point-to-pointer and he’s a chaser in the making. I imagine jumping fences will be his thing.” SECOND RACE PLACED QUOTES NEPTUNE INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT NOVICES’ HURDLE CONNECTIONS DELIGHTED WITH FELIX’S SECOND Trainer Willie Mullins and owner Graham Wylie are looking forward to next season after Felix Yonger finished second to the impressive Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle winner Simonsig. “We brought him here to see how good he was and I’m delighted with that,” said Mullins. “He’s a fine, big scopey horse and hopefully he’ll go to Punchestown now. We’ll see what is available but he could run over two and a half or three miles and then go chasing next season. I think he’s going to keep improving all the time. “We had a faller in the first, who brought down my other runner so that’s the type of week it has been for us.” Wylie added: “Inglis Drever came second in this race for us in 2004 and I’m a happy man now. We came here not expecting too much, I was relaxed beforehand so I’m over the moon that he ran so well.” Noel Meade, trainer of third-placed Monksland, added: “He jumped great and just got a bit flat-footed coming down the hill. He stayed on but I was a bit disappointed he couldn’t quicken better. He’ll go chasing next season and we’ll get him home and then think about Punchestown.” Second race - Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle Quotes O’REGAN PUT THROUGH THE MILL WHEN COTTON DUCKED Jockey Denis O’Regan and trainer John Ferguson were out of luck in this race when Cotton Mill jinked and shed his rider. The five-year-old, who had a three wins from three starts over jumps, was upsides eventual winner Simonsig at the second-last when two strides from take-off he dropped his shoulder, spat O’Regan off then jumped the flight riderless. O’Regan said: “He went to duck out, then saw the rail and ducked back in. He rubbed the rail and going at that speed unfortunately I couldn’t stay on. “I’ll never know whether I was going as well as Simonsig at the time, but at least the horse is okay. He’s obviously a right one. “It’s been a while since I’ve ridden anything that was travelling that well at that stage of a race round here so it’s a bit unfortunate. I’m grateful for the ride. “I’ve had some marvellous days here in the past and it was just bad luck today. I hope John gets a winner later today [he runs Cape Dutch in the Coral Cup, 4.00].” NO TROUBLE WITH COTTON MILL Trainer John Ferguson reports Cotton Mill completely unscathed after his incident-packed run in the second race, the Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle. The gelding jinked and unseated Denis O’Regan at the second-last obstacle, and then fell, running loose, at the last. “He’s absolutely fine,” said Feguson. “He came down at the last because he’d managed to hook his foot through the reins, and tripped himself up. Going to the second-last hurdle, I think it was just inexperience in that situation. He’d just taken up the running. In his other races he’d always had a lead over his hurdles and when he hit the front you could see he was pricking his ears and having a look. “He gave Denis no chance at all. But he was leading a top-class field when it happened, and I think he’s proved he belongs in this grade. He’ll be back to fight another day, in fact I’m looking forward to it.” THE FESTIVAL 2012, CHELTENHAM RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE LADIES DAY, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14 THIRD RACE WINNING QUOTES RSA CHASE BOBS PROVES HIS WORTH Bobs Worth, winner of the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle last year, was a successful at a second consecutive Festival when taking the RSA Chase in impressive fashion. “It’s been a tough season for him and I never thought that he would make it here. Barry (Geraghty) has given him a wonderful ride - he has to do that because he sold the thing to me!”, said winning trainer Nicky Henderson, who was having his 42nd Festival winner. “The horse looked awful six weeks ago and I didn’t really want to run him at Ascot last time but needed to get a run into him. Barry said he gave the horse two gentlemanly rides before today. He looked a different horse today from in the Reynoldstown, it was the first time that his coat was nearly there. He has been behind everything else in the yard. “We have had our problems with him and I was never really happy with him over the winter. He had a wind operation and I don’t know whether that knackered him up a bit. The physios and everybody have worked incredibly hard to get him here and well done them because it has been a long battle to get him back. He had a session with Yogi Breisner last week as his jumping hasn’t always been as slick as it should be, but he jumped beautifully today. These days are very special but you have got to get them right on the day. Barry said he was as brave as a lion.” Third race - RSA Chase Winner quotes VENDOR GERAGHTY REFLECTS ON SHREWD SALE Barry Geraghty has an unusual role in the career of Bobs Worth, who won today’s RSA Chase. He bought the horse with a view to ‘pinhooking’ him - selling him at a later date, hopefully for a profit - and three years later found a buyer. That was Nicky Henderson, and as Geraghty is first jockey at that trainer’s Lambourn stables it meant he was likely to ride the horse once he reached the races. The combination won last year’s Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle and completed a fine Festival double today. Geraghty said: “I bought him as a yearling, and Nicky bought him off me as a four-year-old - or should I say robbed him off me as a four-year-old. He’s a lovely game and genuine horse and he clearly likes this place. “He’s all heart. He jumped well and I knew jumping the second-last that although I was half a length down I had Davy Russell [on runner-up First Lieutenant] covered. I gave him a chance to fill up and he had enough pace. “He had his wind done after the Feltham [Chase in which he was third to Grands Crus] - it was as though he had a bag over his head he couldn’t breathe - and after the operation to sort out his breathing the Reynoldstown at Ascot [in which he was second] probably came too soon. “He’s really come together in the last week and Shane who rides him at home has done some great work on him. “It was a good solid race run at a good pace and I knew he would run well.” RSA CHASE - THIRD RACE PLACED QUOTES LIEUTENANT ‘PADDLES’ HOME Mouse Morris, trainer of runner-up First Lieutenant. “The ground was probably a bit dead for him. And Davy [Russell, jockey] said there was a patch between the last two where it was a bit softer, and he rather paddled through it a bit. He’s a horse who needs genuine good ground. “But I’m not using that as an excuse, he jumped well, gave it everything, and was beaten by a better horse on the day. He belongs in this sort of company, he’s a genuine Grade 1 horse, and if all goes well he should be back here again next year for the next step, the Gold Cup.” Last year the chestnut Presenting gelding beat Tuesday’s Stan James Champion Hurdle winner Rock On Ruby in the Neptune Investment Managements Novices’ Hurdle. Willie Mullins, trainer of third-placed Call The Police “Very pleased with him, he’s a horse who is progressing and he should continue to go forward from this.” Mullins reported Hurricane Fly unscathed after his odds-on third place in Tuesday’s Stan James Champion Hurdle. “He’s fine,” he said. “The race was something we just want to draw a line under, and move on.” Third race The RSA Chase - fourth place PIPE VOWS ‘WE’LL BE BACK’ RSA Chase 6/5 favourite Grands Crus could manage only fourth place after challenging for the lead with two to jump and fading in the home straight. Trainer David Pipe said: “There’ll be other days but he’s back in one piece and that’s the main thing. He just didn’t come up the hill. We’ll be back for more.” Jockey Tom Scudamore added: “He travelled and jumped well but just got beaten. He’s fine.” THE FESTIVAL 2012, CHELTENHAM RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE LADIES DAY, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14 Fourth race The sportingbet.com Queen Mother Chase - winner’s quotes HENDERSON DELIGHTED FOR BUCKLEY AS HE WINS ‘PROPER RACE’ Michael Buckley, the owned of sportingbet.com Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Finian’s Rainbow, had to endure seeing three of his horses finishing second at last year’s Cheltenham Festival but has now won a “proper race”, according to Nicky Henderson. The trainer has now extended his record of Cheltenham Festival winners to 43 with three consecutive victories on today’s card. He said: “Michael’s been with us a very long time and he’s had a lot of good horses and a lot of near misses. Three seconds here last year looked very tough, especially when we beat him with one of our own, but now he has won a proper race.” Finian’s Rainbow and runner-up Sizing Europe were forced to gallop around the last fence as Richard Johnson was being attended to on the landing side following a heavy fall from Wishfull Thinking. Henderson added: “I just hope they’re all alright because they had to miss the last fence. It was a good performance - he’s beaten the reigning champion and he really was back right on song today. We saw two very good horses battle on up the hill. “I’ve never had a day like this before but there’s a long way to go and there are two more days to come. This is very special. It doesn’t happen without a lot of people doing an enormous amount of work. I only drive the ship, there’s a huge team at home: Corky [Browne], who’s been here through all 43 Cheltenham winners, and Connor, who rides Finian’s Rainbow every day. He keeps telling me how this horse is and he’s guided me through his preparation. “After Ascot we started to think that he might want a bit further but I don’t think he does necessarily. I know he started point-to-pointing and the Ryanair crossed our minds but we thought we’d stick to this. When he’s really good like he is now he’s a proper two-miler. He was keen early on but he’s much more relaxed this year and you can just drop him in.” More winning quotes - sportingbet.com Queen Mother Champion Chase BUCKLEY THRILLED BY FINIAN’S RAINBOW Michael Buckley, the winning owner of Finian’s Rainbow, said: “I am speechless, to be truthful. “I am feeling remarkably emotional. It’s true to say that I wouldn’t actually have any jump horses if it wasn’t for Nicky (Henderson (trainer)). “We have been together as owner, trainer and friend since the early 1980s and I can’t imagine doing it with anybody else - certainly not on the scale that we have tried to do it. “It’s just another notch in Nicky’s long career. He’s scooted past the all-time record and so I am proud and pleased to be part of the day.” Nicky Henderson added: “I am thrilled for Michael because he has put a lot into this game and adores it. It’s a special day.” SPORTINGBET.COM QUEEN MOTHER CHAMPION CHASE FOURTH RACE QUOTES - WINNING JOCKEY A DREAM AT THE END OF A RAINBOW Barry Geraghty, rider of winner Finian’s Rainbow Of the need to bypass the final fence, Geraghty said: “The sun was in our eyes coming off the final bend and I didn’t see they had it dolled off, and I didn’t realise we had to go round it until Andrew [Lynch, on Sizing Europe, on Geraghty’s left] started to move out and took me with him. “They didn’t seem to have dolled off the whole fence and there was plenty of room to jump half of it, and if Andrew had jumped it I’d have gone with him. And we’d perhaps of paid the price for things not being that clear.” Of the race and Finian’s Rainbow, Geraghty said: “This horse has really turned a corner since he was beaten at Ascot [by Thursday’s Ryanair contender Somersby]. But that’s what Nicky Henderson does so well. Bob’s Worth was beaten last time as well, but he knows exactly how to get them right for the day that really matters. The two horses have been coming along beautifully together in their work at home. “In the race, my lad travelled and jumped. The leader [Sizing Europe] stretched me a little bit coming down the hill, but I was still able to get plenty of breathers into him, and fill him up before the final turn. “I felt I had him covered from there, and being forced out round the last fence made no difference. It was a cracking race between two top-class horses, no quarter given or asked. “When you go to Cheltenham you’re happy with one winner. It’s days like this you dream about when you’re a kid with your ponies, and when you’re an adult too, come to that.” Placed quotes DE BROMHEAD SAYS LAST-FENCE DETOUR NO HELP TO EUROPE Trainer Henry De Bromhead was magnanimous in defeat, but said an incident approaching the final fence did not help runner-up Sizing Europe. After Wishfull Thinking fell at the fence and rolled under the rail on the first circuit it was partly dolled off. Yet as Sizing Europe under Andrew Lynch, and winner Finian’s Rainbow, the mount of Barry Geraghty, rode towards it they seemed unsure whether it was to be jumped or not. Little more than ten metres from the wings Lynch on the inside began pulling on the right rein to go round the jump, a move that carried Geraghty with him. Horses following behind were also ridden around the fence. De Bromhead said: “It [swerving around the fence] certainly didn’t help. We were eventually beaten fair and square, but things didn’t fall as you would like them through the race. “Andrew felt that had he been able to jump the final fence it would have helped him. He had make a more exaggerated move than Barry, absolutely. He had hugged the inner which was great and would have helped had the fence been there to jump. “When you are out in front you need something to keep aiming at and unfortunately we didn’t have the last - whether it cost us or not I don’t know. I’m obviously disappointed not to win, but it didn’t happen today. He ran a blinder, he always does. I’ll talk to Ann and Alan [Potts, Sizing Europe’s owners] about future plans.” Colm Murphy, trainer of third-placed Big Zeb, who won the race two years ago, said: “I’m delighted with him. He doesn’t have the same pace as of old, but I’m pleased he battled on and it’s great to be in this place [the winner’s enclosure] once again. Given his age [11] they just went a gear too quick for him. “I’d say Punchestown will be on his agenda if he comes out of this race okay.” FOURTH RACE ROUND-UP JOHNSON STOOD DOWN Jockey Richard Johnson has been stood down from the remainder of his rides after a fall at the fourth fence in which his mount, Wishfull Thinking, fell through a rail and injured French photographer Jean-Charles Briens. Johnson suffered soft-tissue injury but hopes to ride tomorrow. Briens has been taken to hospital to have stitches put in a badly-cut lip but is otherwise fine. There was some debate about the dolling-off procedure at the final fence following the fall and senior stipendiary steward William Nunneley spoke to Channel 4 Racing. “Richard Linley, the inspector of coures, was down there (at the fence),” said Nunneley. “I know there was some confusion about where the chevrons there were placed. The reason they were on the inside is that they are there to tell the jockeys where to go but also to proptect anything lying on the other side of the fence. You had Richard Johnson lying on the landing side and an injured photographer on the rail and the rail was brokem. Quite obviously they had to protect them from say a loose horse or anything that came down. “While The jockeys might move around the fence but if you had a loose horse he could jump it and the idea with the chevrons there was that if the horse jumped it, it would have jumped away from where the casualty was. “They were instructed to move the boards because there was a casualty on the rail. The jockeys wouldn’t have seen the chevrons in the middle of the fence until they jumped the second last and by that time they were already on the inside. Being sensible you can’t have a man on the track with a flag because that would endanger him. “Procedures are agreed with the racing department and Richard Linley was down there advising them what to do. I’m sure there will be lessons to be learned as with anything. But safety was paramount in a very short space of time.” Jockey Andrew Lynch, who finished runner-up on Sizing Europe, received a six-day suspension for using his whip in an incorrect place. The day takes place from March 28 to April 2 inclusive. BHA STATEMENT Jamie Stier, Director of Raceday Operations and Regulation for the British Horseracing Authority, said: “The priority in any bypassing situation is the safety and welfare of the injured parties and those administering the treatment. In this case, there was a rider with a suspected broken leg. The direction markers were grouped together to give Richard Johnson and the medical optimum protection at that time. "In today’s Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival the correct procedures in the bypassing of the last fence were adopted. “The fence was directed to be bypassed by Simon Claisse, the Clerk of the Course, and once this direction was given the direction markers were placed on the fence. “There are always three direction markers used to indicate a fence is to be bypassed. Initially the direction markers were positioned across the fence but due to the casualties on the landing side Richard Lindley, Senior Inspector of Courses, decided that the markers be repositioned collectively on the inside of the fence for added protection of the injured persons. “It should also be noted the hazard warning flag was deployed correctly and approximately two metres from the running rail. Additionally the person waving the flag was blowing a whistle alerting jockeys to bypass. “The procedures used at Cheltenham today are the same as applied to all jump courses in Great Britain. Bypassing procedures have been in place since 1995/6 jump season and have always included the use of direction markers. With the exception of the Grand National course, the decision was taken when bypassing procedures were introduced that parts of fences were no longer to be jumped. "We are always reviewing our procedures to ensure that they are working effectively and achieving their objectives.” THE FESTIVAL 2012, CHELTENHAM RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE LADIES DAY, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14 Fifth race - The Coral Cup - winner’s quotes McCAIN PAYS TRIBUTE TO TOUGH SON OF FLICKA Son Of Flicka was beaten just a neck at last year’s Festival when runner-up to Sir Des Champs in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Hurdle but he went one better today with victory in the Coral Cup, romping home to a three-and-a-half length victory over top-weight Get Me Out Of Here. The winner was backed in from 66/1 to 16/1 after being tipped by the Racing Post’s Pricewise column. Trainer Donald McCain, who was celebrating his second win at this year’s Festival after yesterday’s success of Cinders And Ashes, said: “He’s a tough little horse and he always does his best. He was going up and up in the weights and never winning a race but he’s always deserved a big one. “He’s been around for a long time - he’s lived with us since he was a three-year-old and I was devastated for him last year when he got done on the line. Then he took a terrible fall at Aintree and it took a while to get his confidence back and he’s been running on bad ground which isn’t his thing. We aimed to come here and try to have him spot-on for the day. “You come here and there are 15 or 20 with chances so I’m never confident. I know my good horses but in the handicaps I’m a little bit lost, but he’s as tough and as genuine as they come and I’ve got a jockey who’s riding out of his skin. “Jason [Maguire] knows that riding for me he can pretty much do what he likes. We’ve only ever had cross words once and we had to go to hug each other later we felt that bad about it. We’re good friends and he’s on the same side as me.” McCain added: “It can’t get any better than this, I just keep shaking my head. I have a yardful of good owners, nice horses and great staff who are putting a lot of work in. It’s all down to them.” The stewards subsequently considered the improved form of Son Of Flicka following his previous run at Kempton and were satisfied with McCain’s explanation that the gelding appreciated the better ground and comes to himself in the spring. More winning quotes - the Coral Cup SECOND LAST YEAR & A WINNER IN 2012 Jason Maguire, the winning rider on Son Of Flicka, said: “It’s a great training performance by Donald McCain to get this horse back. He’s been disappointing on his last few runs and he has obviously come down in the handicap. Donald’s got him cherry-ripe today. “He was second in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockey’s Handicap Hurdle last year, when he just got collared, and only had 10st 6lb on his back today. I was probably off the bridle a good long way out and had to keep going once we turned in but he has kept going well.” Phil Williams, the man behind owner Twenty Four Seven Recruitment, commented: “It’s one of the greatest feelings that I have ever had. He came second last year and the horse is such a great little thing. “I love the horse and, for me, it’s all about the best for him - I almost feel like retiring him now because he owes me nothing. “Michael O’Leary beat us last year and, when you are second here, it’s a lonely place. I said to him that it must have been the first time I know that he has ever organised anything to turn up in the right place at the right time, in a nice way. I admire the man really - he is a great sport and he wished me all the best. “Son Of Flicka ran up the hill last year and we were beaten by something that was just brilliant. Today, he has had his day. “If you can just please make sure that you step over me when you come to work in the morning, I would be very grateful. I am going to write my name and address somewhere so I can be sent home. “This is for all people in Wrexham and obviously my family, who I love very much.” Placed quotes ‘GET ME OUT OF HERE AND INTO THE WINNER’S SPOT’ If you want to find the Jonjo O’Neill-trained Get Me Out Of Here at The Festival look no further than the runner-up spot. Three times the horse has run at Jump racing’s premier meeting, and each time he has finished second. Today that was three and a half lengths second to Son Of Flicka in the Coral Cup. Earlier visits to The Festival had resulted in the runner-up slot in the William Hill Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and Vincent O’Brien County Hurdle. O’Neill, who trains the eight-year-old for owner J P McManus, said: “All being well he’ll come back here next year and I’ll be delighted with another second. “He’s been great to us and he’s run a blinder again today. We all knew it would be hard to win under top-weight. “We’re disappointed for him, but it’s great to get him here in one piece three years in a row. A P [McCoy] gave him a brilliant ride and everything went right so we have no excuses. He stayed the trip well enough. “A P was a little worried the horse wasn’t quite right when he came back in, but he’s often not quite right, and if nothing comes of it we’ll go to Aintree for the two-and-a-half miler on the Saturday.” Nicky Henderson ran two in the race - Spirit River who fell at the last when in contention for a place, and Veiled, who took third. He said: “Spirit River appears to be alright and Veiled ran a very good race. She’ll probably come back here for the mares’ race [a Listed handicap hurdle at the April meeting].” FEATHERBED LANE Featherbed Lane sustained a broken leg during the Coral Cup and was humanely put down. THE FESTIVAL, CHELTENHAM, 2012 RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE LADIES DAY, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14 Sixth race - Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle Quotes HENDERSON THE ARTISTE WITH A FOURTH WINNER ON THE DAY Nicky Henderson’s incredible second day at the Festival was completed with a fourth winner thanks to Une Artiste. The Simon Munir-owned mare took Henderson’s tally this week to five and his overall record at the meeting to 44 victories. The four-timer paid a sparkling 3,381.5/1. Victory in this race was especially sweet for the Lambourn-based Henderson, for it commemorates the great jockey and trainer Fred Winter, to whom Henderson was an assistant before branching out on his own. In the winner’s enclosure, Henderson revealed that he was wearing a suit owned by his late father Johnny. He had suspected today would be a good one for the yard, so wore the suit as a mark of respect for a man who he said “had been instrumental in the success of Cheltenham”. Johnny Henderson, who died in 2005, helped save Cheltenham Racecourse when a member of the Jockey Club in 1963. Together with other members of the Jockey Club, he raised £240,000 to purchase the course and established Racecourse Holdings Trust to run it. RHT, now Jockey Club Racecourses, has 14 racecourses today. Nicky Henderson said: “It’s been one of those days - we’ll probably wake up and find it’s been a good dream. We’ve had a lot of great days, but Cheltenham comes round once a year and to everyone here it’s the best four days of the year. It doesn’t get any better and it’s lovely to win the Fred Winter, who was friend, boss, mentor and tutor. “Dad and Fred Winter were the two most influential people in my life.” Simon Munir had suffered disappointment when his Grandouet was ruled out of the Festival four weeks ago through injury, but this win was some consolation. He said: “Racing is a great leveller. We were in two minds about running this mare because she was quite disappointing when she ran in the Adonis Hurdle [at Kempton]. We decided to give her a chance and look what happened. “This takes me back to Soldatino’s win in the Triumph Hurdle two years ago, but when your expectations are low the upside is massive. I didn’t have a penny on her.” Sixth race The Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle - winning jockey’s quotes McGRATH CELEBRATES FIRST FESTIVAL VICTORY Jeremiah McGrath rode Une Artiste to victory up Cheltenham’s famous hill and added yet another win to the remarkable haul of Nicky Henderson’s Seven Barrows stable which celebrated its fifth win of the 2012 Festival and fourth of the day. The delighted 21-year-old conditional jockey said: “That was my first Festival winner and the last day I was here at Cheltenham was back in December when I took a really bad fall on my birthday. This has definitely made up for it. It’s unbelievable. “I’d like to thank [owner] Mr Munir and Mr Henderson. We’ve had a fantastic day. There’s an awful lot of work that goes on behind the scenes and it’s paid off for everybody back at the yard. It’s absolutely brilliant. “Believe it or not there was less pressure on me after the three winners earlier. He’ll probably kill me for saying this but the boss is in great form so anything I could do was a bonus.” Paying tribute to his winning mount, he added: “She’s a tough little filly. She hasn’t been in the yard for long and I rode her for the first time at Haydock when she won on heavy ground. That’s the doubt I had in my mind, whether she’d like the better ground, but she scooted up the hill and I knew I was getting there. She absolutely winged the last and she won going away. For a juvenile she jumped very well and galloped right to the line. She did it easily.” FRED WINTER JUVENILE HANDICAP HURDLE SIXTH RACE QUOTES - PLACED HORSES YOU CAN’T FIGHT FIRE Tony Martin, trainer of runner-up Edeymi “He’s run a blinder, just met a better one on the day. Unfortunately, Nicky Henderson [trainer of the winner Une Artiste] is on fire. I thought he might have gone to the bar and stopped after three. I’d have bought him a case of champagne to keep him there.” Alan King, trainer of third-place Vendor, the 3/1 favourite. “He’s still a baby, still learning. I don’t think he’s ever been crowded in a pack like that and you could see him just looking a bit timid for a stride or too, although he finished the race off well. Ideally, I probably would have liked to give him another race after Newbury, just to get the experience into him, but the handicapper would have had a say. “It’s always a bit disappointing when a favourite you really fancy gets beaten. But he’s a bloody nice horse for the future, one for the long term. And there are far worse things to worry about.” THE FESTIVAL 2012, CHELTENHAM RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE LADIES DAY, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14 SEVENTH RACE WINNING QUOTES WEATHERBYS CHAMPION BUMPER CHAMPAGNE PUTS MULLINS IN SEVENTH HEAVEN Willie Mullins landed the Weatherbys Champion Bumper for the seventh time when Champagne Fever took this year’s contest under the trainer’s son Patrick. “I’m delighted because we’d got a little despondent about how some of the horses had been running,” said the winning trainer. “The horse just gallops and has a huge cruising speed. That’s where we went wrong with him first time out at Leopardstown, we should have made more use of him. We always thought he was good but just messed up that day. At Fairyhouse we made all the running and I said to Patrick today to just be up there so he took it on himself to make the running. The horse seemed to go even better when he hit the rising ground. “I’m delighted for connections because Susannah Ricci has a lot of horses with me and a winner here is always fantastic but it’s even more special when it’s ridden by your son. “He’s a big light-framed horse and I hope he will remain like that all of his life because that type of horse is easier to keep sound.” Mullins also saddled third-placed Pique Sous and added: “He ran an absolute cracker and I was delighted with him. He came down the hill well and he and the winner could go to Punchestown.” Seventh race The Weatherbys Champion Bumper - winning jockey’s quotes PATRICK MULLINS CELEBRATES SECOND CHAMPION BUMPER VICTORY Four years after recording his first victory in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper on Cousin Vinny, Patrick Mullins notched another success in the race aboard 16/1 shot Champagne Fever, who is trained by his father Willie. Patrick said: “I’ve always compared him to Quel Esprit, in that he has great cruising speed but not much of a finishing kick. He has a fine old stride so I wanted to use that and he showed that he was able to keep it up the whole way. “I wondered going round the home bend how much he had left but when the others came to me he just kept finding. He’s tough but a few people have questioned his head carriage. He carries his head up high but that’s just his posture. “He’s a very exciting horse. Any day you can get a winner on the board at Cheltenham is great and for dad to get two is fantastic.” There was some bad news for the young jockey, however, after he was banned for two days, for exceeding the number of times he was allowed to use his whip by one. Declan Lavery, rider of fourth-placed Moscow Mannon, received a seven-day ban, also for excessive use of the whip. NEW YEAR’S EVE ADDS TO FERGUSON’S HAPPY YEAR John Ferguson’s memorable first season as a permit-holder gained further gloss when New Year’s Eve finished second in the Weatherbys-sponsored Champion Bumper. Suffolk-based Ferguson employed Barry Geraghty for the ride on the four-year-old who split the Willie Mullins-trained pair Champagne Fever and Pique Sous, going down by one and a quarter lengths after the three pulled clear and had a sustained battle. Ferguson said: “I’m delighted with the way he’s run and he’s going to be a smashing horse for next year. “He’s won two bumpers and to finish second in Cheltenham’s championship race is a great start to a horse’s career. He’s got the size and scope to go on and he’ll jump a hurdle in the autumn. “I asked Barry to ride this one because Jack [Quinlan, who rides most of the yard’s horses] is still a 5lb claimer and it’s not fair to ask someone of that experience to come to the Festival for three rides, so I used Barry on this one and Denis [O’Regan] on Cotton Mill.” THE FESTIVAL 2012, CHELTENHAM RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE LADIES DAY, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14 FIRST RACE RESULT 1.30pm DIAMOND JUBILEE NATIONAL HUNT CHASE (AMATEUR RIDERS) Class 2, £75,000 guaranteed. 137 41st winner at The Festival for Nicky Henderson - now the most successful trainer of all-time at the meeting Winning Jockey: Barry Geraghty Born: September 16, 1979 Background: Barry Geraghty will forever be associated with the great Moscow Flyer who provided him with his first Cheltenham Festival victory in the 2002 Arkle Chase and went on to add the Queen Mother Champion Chase in 2003 and 2005, as well as a host of other championship races including the Grade One John Smith's Melling Chase at Aintree in 2004 and 2005. Geraghty is one of six children from a "horse-mad" family that hails from Drumree in Co Meath. His father ‘Tucker' was a useful amateur and trains a few horses in addition to his riding school and livery yard while his brother Ross, who won the 2002 Irish National on The Bunny Boiler, and sister Jill, an amateur, are both jockeys. Geraghty has a background in pony racing, riding his last winner in that sphere in September, 1996, before becoming apprenticed to Noel Meade that month and having his first ride in October, 1996. He has twice been champion jump jockey in Ireland in the seasons 1999/2000 and 2003/04. It was for Moscow Flyer's trainer Jessica Harrington that he first sprang to prominence, partnering her 1998 Midlands National winner Miss Orchestra. He crowned the 2002/03 season with victory in the John Smith's Grand National aboard Monty's Pass, something which contributed to him being voted RTE Sports Personality of the year by Irish television viewers. Took up the offer of becoming Nicky Henderson’s number one jockey following the retirement of Mick Fitzgerald at the end of the 2007/08 season, and he now divides his time between Britain and Ireland. Donald learnt to ride on his sister Joanne’s pony Gambol and rode in his first race on the Flat aged 15 (his father told a few white lies so he could ride) at Haydock Park. Donald subsequently became assistant trainer to his father at Bankhouse Stables at Cholmondeley in Cheshire and played a significant role in Amberleigh House’s Grand National victory in 2004. He was expected to take over the licence from his father at the start of the 2006/7 jump season, but had to wait until June, 2006, before he was able to train in his own name as he needed to complete the appropriate British Horseracing Authority courses. In a very short space of time, Patrick has established himself as one of the more promising young riders on the National Hunt scene. Riding primarily for his father in bumpers, he has shown that he has an astute tactical riding brain as well as a power-packed finish. He took his first ride in public on his father’s Screaming Witness in a bumper at Thurles in December 2005, and he rode his first winner at the age of 16 on a horse of his father’s called Diego Garcia in a qualified riders race at Limerick the following June. Understandably, at that time his riding was restricted by him having to attend school, but he increasingly managed to turn up on the race track to take fancied rides. Won the long-established Denny Havasnack amateur riders’ race at Tralee on August 31, 2006, when still a 16-year-old schoolboy.
