PAT PHELAN WINS EPSOM TRAINERS’ CHAMPIONSHIP AS HUGHES AND HANNON CLEAN UP AT EPSOM’S SEASON FINALE
Local trainer Pat Phelan celebrated his 61st birthday on Sunday 25th September by winning the season long Totepool Epsom Trainers’ Championship at Epsom Downs Racecourse finale race fixture this year.
Phelan, one the 12 Epsom based trainers who were competing for the title, saw off a strong challenge from Michael Attwater and Simon Dow. Attwater had led the championship until 18th August, before being overtaken by Phelan four meetings from the end of the season, with Simon Dow finishing in third place.
Phelan commented, “It’s a great birthday present. I am honoured and privileged to win the Totepool Epsom Trainers’ Championship. There has been a great atmosphere around the affair. The spirit in which the whole event has been conducted is indicative of all the people involved. Michael Attwater is a very good trainer and I am sure his time will come in the future.”
The final meeting at Epsom Downs Racecourse also played witness to a Richard Hughes and Richard Hannon treble across the first three races, with Hughes also adding the last race of the day to complete an impressive 4 out 5 race tally.
The Surrey racecourse has an exciting 2012 in prospect - Epsom will play host to Her Majesty the Queen’s first official engagement of her Diamond Jubilee Celebrations on Derby Day - Saturday 2nd June. Epsom opens it 2012 season with the Investec Spring Meeting on Wednesday 25th April, when the Road to the Derby starts in earnest with the first Derby Trial, the Investec Derby Trial.
