,center>ELLIPTICAL AIMING TO MAKE MARK IN totesport.com CAMBRIDGESHIRE AT NEWMARKET ON SATURDAY,/center>
Trainer Gerard Butler is hoping that Elliptical can gain a deserved big-race success in the £160,000 totesport.com Cambridgeshire at Newmarket on Saturday, 2nd October.
The four-year-old, a 16/1 chance with totesport, features among the 79 entries remaining in the prestigious nine-furlong heritage handicap following today’s five-day confirmation stage.
Elliptical went down by a head to Tartan Gigha (33/1) over the same course and distance in the valuable Suffolk Handicap at the Guineas Festival in May and endured further heartbreak on his latest start at Newbury on 18th September, when being collared near the line by Forte Dei Marmi in the 10-furlong Dubai Duty Free Heritage Handicap.
Butler revealed today: “Elliptical came out of his run at Newbury in good shape and the only issue we might have, and it is only a very small thing, is that Newmarket might come a bit too soon. It’s the last big handicap of the year open to him and I hope that we can get him there in as good a shape as possible.
“I think he thought he might have won at Newbury until he looked over to his left and saw Forte Dei Marmi coming to beat him for a third time. It took a lot of convincing, but I finally persuaded Luca Cumani not to run his horse again on Saturday, so hopefully we can go there with a chance!
“He was just touched off over nine furlongs at Newmarket at the start of the season but he is in better form now than he was then. The ground wouldn’t be an issue as long as it is not too soft - he won with cut underneath at Salisbury last year but I wouldn’t want to risk him on very soft going.”
Butler is no stranger to success in the totesport.com Cambridgeshire having saddled Beauchamp Pilot to triumph in the race in 2002.
Nationalism currently heads the market for the totesport.com Cambridgeshire at 4/1 with the race sponsor and the progressive three-year-old is set to try and give trainer John Gosden a third success in the race in the past four years following on from Pipedreamer (2007) and Tazeez (2008) and his fourth in total with Halling (1994) having also prevailed for the Newmarket handler.
Other notable contenders include the Luca Cumani-trained Start Right (9/1), who was fourth in the Irish Cambridgeshire on his latest appearance, the hat-trick seeking Absinthe (12/1) from the yard of Walter Swinburn, and Irish raider Pires (12/1), representing County Meath handler Tony Martin.
The totesport.com Cambridgeshire has a safety limit of 35 runners and this year, for the first time, the Rowley Mile is hosting a consolation race for those horses that do not make the cut at the 48-hour stage.
Taking place over the same course and distance on Friday, 1st October is the £40,000 Standing For Success Handicap (Silver Cambridgeshire). This contest, one of six races on the card generously supported by Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum’s Shadwell breeding operation, also has a maximum field of 35 and is an exciting innovation undertaken by Newmarket Racecourses.
totesport Cambridgeshire Day also features the £180,000 Group One Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes and a total of 16 fillies and mares remain in the mile contest including Sahpresa, who gave French trainer Rodolphe Collet a first Group One success when successful in the race last year. There is another potential French challenger, the talented Liliside, who was first across the line in the French 1,000 Guineas, the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, in May at Longchamp but was placed sixth for causing interference.
Spacious took third behind Sahpresa 12 months ago and the James Fanshawe-trained five-year-old has been second in Group One company on both her most recent starts, including when finding the Mick Channon-trained Music Show two lengths too strong in the Etihad Airways Falmouth Stakes at the Champagne Lanson July Festival.
Seta could return to Group One company following a pair of Listed victories for Luca Cumani, while the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Strawberrydaiquiri and this year’s 1000 Guineas runner-up Jacqueline Quest, representing Henry Cecil, also feature among the remaining entries.
Newmarket also hosts two legs of the lucrative Tattersalls Millions on Saturday, the £300,000 Tattersalls Millions Fillies’ 2YO Trophy and Europe’s most valuable two-year-old race, the £500,000 Tattersalls Millions 2YO Trophy.
