LADBROKES ST LEGER FESTIVAL 2009
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
DONCASTER, FIRST DAY, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9
STRAIGHT COURSE TO BE WATERED AFTER RACING
David Williams, Clerk of the Course at Doncaster, has decided to put four millimetres of water on the straight course after racing tonight to maintain the going as Good to Firm.
He explained: “All the jockeys said this afternoon that it was lovely ground with a good covering of grass but quick.
“So I am going to put four millimetres of water on the straight and leave the round course, which has ridden a bit easier (Good, good to firm in places), as it is.
“The watering will keep any jar out and maintain the good, quick ground in the straight.”

DETTORI LOOKS FORWARD TO LADBROKES ST LEGER
Frankie Dettori rides Kite Wood in the Ladbrokes St Leger on Saturday and the crowd favourite, seeking a sixth victory in the world’s oldest Classic, is looking forward to partnering the Godolphin colt.
Interviewed by Matt Chapman on At The Races, the jockey said: “When he won at Newbury it was very firm - he’s a big horse who hits the ground very hard through his shoulders, so as long as Doncaster produces safe, good ground, we’ll be very happy.
“The last thing we want is to run a big horse like that on firm ground again - I would say he would not be as a effective. But if Doncaster produces good ground, everybody will be happy.”
Kite Wood made the running when winning his last two starts in Group Three company but Dettori does not believe that setting the pace is a necessary tactic in order for the three-year-old colt to triumph.
He said: "We dropped him in at the Dante and then made the running when he won. He just needs a nice, even pace and I’ll be delighted if (Aidan) O’Brien runs some pacemakers because being in front over a mile and six can be a very lonely place.
“I think if they run pacemakers it will suit us, Ballydoyle and everybody, so I’ll be pleased to drop him in.”
He reflected on his past successes in the Ladbrokes St Leger: “All five were special and the Leger is the oldest Classic in England and carries a great deal of prestige.”
First Race - The Wilkinson Frenchgate Nursery - Winners Quotes
FALLON FINDS A WAY FOR AUDACITY
Once he’d charted the right course, Kieren Fallon hosed home on Audacity Of Hope, his fifth winner since returning to racing on Friday.
“I was in a bit of trouble early on - I was in big trouble. But he got me out of it. We had to pick up from off the pace - I just couldn’t get out.
“There was no room on the inside so I was trying to get out to go down the outside. It took me a long time to get out but when I did he picked up instantly,” said the jockey.
Fallon was full of compliments for the Charlie McBride-trained two-year-old. “It was a very good nursery. I rode him in work in the week and I was impressed with him.”
The trainer had decided to run the colt in a tongue tie after watching a video of his last race.
“The last time he ran he got his tongue over the bit and we didn’t realise it till afterwards. and we saw the video and his tongue was hanging out of his mouth. We tied his tongue down to make sure.
“He was a bit keen early on and he needs to settle. Kieren had to take the horse back at one stage, but Audacity Of Hope was always travelling well. He gave him a lovely confident ride,” said McBride, adding that he felt there was no reason to go any further than seven furlongs at this stage of the colt’s career.
GOING AFTER THE FIRST RACE
Winning jockey Kieren Fallon, on the 3/1 favourite Audacity of Hope, described the going as “Beautiful.”
Frankie Dettori, rider the 1 1/4 length second Pleasant Day, said: Good to firm, it is pretty quick definitely on the fast side.”
Tom Queally, jockey of the third placed Farmer Giles, said: “Good quick ground, but safe.”
Phillip Makin, rider of Mr Grinch, reported the going as “Quick, but no jar.”
Steve Drowne, jockey of Desert Auction, said: “Fast.”
Tadhg O’Shea, rider of Atacama Crossing, said: “Beautiful ground. If they don’t handle that they’ll handle nothing.”
William Buick, rider of Brick Red, said: “Good to firm.”
David Allan, jockey of Flaneur, said: “It is on the quick side of good.”
Tony Cullhane, rider of Miss Smilla, reported “Beautiful ground.”
John Egan, rider of Transfixed, said: “Good quick ground.”
Michael Hills, rider of Ransom Note, said: “Good to firm.”

Race 2 - Sainsbury’s Frenchgate Conditions Stakes - Winning Quotes
ANGEL’S PURSUIT BOUNCES BACK
Angel’s Pursuit may have finished last on the Polytrack at Kempton as recently as Saturday, but he put that form firmly behind him when recording a game three-quarter length victory over Roodle in the six-furlong Sainsbury’s Frenchgate Conditions Stakes.
Partnered by Steve Drowne, the Pastotal Pursuits two-year-old colt was registering his second victory from eight starts this season.
Richard Hannon Jr, assistant trainer to his father, commented: “Angel’s Pursuit was a bit unlucky on his last two starts at Kempton and Deauville. He deserved to win this.
“Steve Drowne, who rode his sire Pastoral Pursuits, thinks he will definitely train on next year.
“He disappointed us at Royal Ascot but we still think he is a pretty decent two-year-old. He’s not in the Mill Reef Stakes and we will try and find a Listed race for him now.
“There was wasn’t much between them and it was his first time on the surface at Kempton on Saturday while at Deauville he was a bit unlucky and catching the winner all the time at the finish. He has bounced backed today.
“He cost £200,000 and is getting better all the time.”
Talking about some of the stable’s leading juveniles, Hannon continued: “Canford Cliffs is now finished for the season and will hopefully go for the Greenham and 2000 Guineas next spring.
“Monsieur Chevalier was a bit jarred up after his last run at Kempton but we will probably try and find a race for him somewhere.
“With Emerald Commander we have a number of options and he will need to go where there is some soft ground.”

Third Race - The Debenhams Frenchgate Conditions Stakes - Winners Quotes
OVER EASY
When the race began in earnest, there was only one horse in the Debenhams Frenchgate Conditions Stakes. Cock A Block, with Frankie Dettori on board, might have taken them out, but there was only one horse bringing them in.
When Twice Over stretched out inside the final two furlongs, even the starting price of 4/6 looked generous. The horse’s three previous outings had been at Group One level, so it was, perhaps, to be expected.
The trainer Henry Cecil was not at Doncaster, but Mike Marshall, representing the stable, said: “It was a drop in class today and he deserved that. I think that was what the boss was after. A nice bit of confidence for him and to go and win like he has done.
“Tom [Queally] said it was like a piece of work and basically it was. And probably the ground would be fast enough out there now. I think he probably appreciates a little more juice.
“He doesn’t get an easy race this fella. Well, he hasn’t done till possibly today,” said Marshall.
Queally said: “He won like a Group horse in a conditions race. He travelled well and settled well and showed a good turn of foot that put him in a league apart from these. He wasn’t right that day [in the Eclipse] and today you’ve seen more of the real horse.
“He was just nearly in the Lockinge and the Prince Of Wales. If things had fallen one way or another it might have made a difference. He wasn’t unlucky but he was just maybe unlucky to come up against a couple that were too good for him. He’s a very straightforward horse. He’s laid back. He nearly talks to you. He’s that sort of horse.”

Fourth Race - The DFS Scarbrough Stakes - Winners Quotes
THE REAL DEAL
Two furlongs out in the DFS Scarbrough Stakes, the feature race of the opening day of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival, and owner Martin Barber might have begun to regret telling his friends that Strike the Deal would win today.
“I don’t back my own horses, but I told all my friends too,” said the Rotherham scrap-metal merchant.
But a furlong out, relief came. There was a gap in the wall of horses, and Strike The Deal was through, accelerating at such speed that Kieren Fallon, recording his second riding success of the day, was quickly clear.
“The sea opened for him in fairness. Kieren just said that when they came out of the gate, the horse was leaning on the gate. Basically very slow out. But a furlong out, the sea parted - the gap opened for him,” said Barber.
The horse had been contesting races over six furlongs, but Barber gave credit to jockey Philip Robinson, who had ridden Strike The Deal in two of his three previous outings, and who had suggested bringing the four-year-old down in distance. “In fairness to Philip, who has been riding him, he said try him back at five furlongs.”
Robinson didn’t have the ride this time, though, Barber explaining the reasoning for putting Fallon on board. “Jeremy [Noseda], the trainer, wanted a jockey on him who was basically going to smack his arse. He said, let’s put Kieren on him.”
The plan now is to keep the colt at five furlongs and the next intended outing is a Group Three at Newbury.
Fallon, celebrating a 21/1 double today; remarked: “I have always liked this horse and he has just come good. They said that bringing him back to this trip might suit him.
“He was slowly away, but that was not the plan. He was lying on the gate when the gates opened. There were a few of them chopping around and I just had to roll on.
“When the gaps came, everything came good for him. He has done it well in the end. This is where I want to be and where I want to stay (in the winner’s enclosure).”

Moved to Britain when still an apprentice in 1988, working for Jimmy Fitzgerald and then Lynda Ramsden in 1993. Signed to ride for Henry Cecil in 1996, and became champion jockey for the first time in 1997 with 202 wins, also winning his first two classics. Joined Sir Michael Stoute in 2000 after acrimonious split with Cecil, but suffered a bad fall at Royal Ascot that nearly ended his career, and ruled him out of the rest of the season. Replaced Jamie Spencer as Ballydoyle stable jockey in 2005, although continued to ride for Stoute when allowed. Charged with race-fixing by City of London Police in 2006, and banned from riding in Britain pending trial. Also failed drugs test in France, resulting in worldwide six month ban in the same year. Returned to action in June 2007, although gave up riding in October 2007 to concentrate impending court case. Cleared of attempting to defraud Betfair customers when trial collapsed in December 2007, only to be found guilty of failing a drugs test in France in August 2007. Started riding out for Sir Michael Stoute after being given an 18-month ban and launched his own website. Fifth Race - The New Look Frenchgate Handicap - Winners Quotes
HONEST AKHENATEN
Both trainer Mick Channon and jockey Tony Culhane have described Akhenaten as a “honest horse” and the three-year-old could not be faulted for effort as the colt came late and strong to win the seven-furlong New Look Frenchgate Handicap by three-quarters of a length.
Channon had to listen to the race commentary on his phone, having opted instead to watch England take on Australia in the third one-day international at the Rose Bowl, not too distant from his training base at West Ilsey.
Culhane and Channon had worked out a race strategy beforehand; that if the pace was insufficient, the jockey would take it up with Akhenaten. “About halfway through, I was thinking that I should have done,” said the jockey.
“I’d said to Mick that if I jumped and found myself there I’d take it up and I was half wishing I had.
“I thought I’d have to give him half a squeeze to get there and I didn’t want to do it, because he’s a high quality horse. He battled on well and stuck his head out.
“He’s only won one race this year, so ,maybe he’s been a bit unlucky. Today he had seven furlongs on a nice even track on lovely ground. Conditions were right,” added the jockey.

Sixth Race - The Evans Frenchgate Handicap, Division I - Winners Quotes
TOTAL IMPACT KNOWS HIS MARK
Total Impact’s last two successes, prior to the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival, had been off an official rating of 82 both times.
After a fruitless spell, the six-year-old had again dropped back to a mark of 82, and as trainer Richard Fahey said, after the 5/2 favourite had burst through to take the Evans Frenchgate Handicap, Division I, by a neck:
“Old sprinters like this seem to know what mark they can win off. Once you shove them up, they go out of range and when they come down again they go in.”
“As long as the handicapper is not too tough on him, he might go in again. The handicapper can only put him up a couple of pounds,” added the trainer, hopefully.
Total Impact’s success brought the stable’s tally of winners this year in total to 133.
“We can’t believe it. Genuinely can’t believe it, but we’ll take it,” said Fahey.
Apprentice Frederik Tylicki has benefited hugely from the stable’s rich vein of form and Total Impact brought the young jockey his 50th winner of the year and he is battling for the apprentice championship.
“He’s one behind Mr [David] Probert, so we’re going to try and nail him. Freddie said he’s going to do him on the line,” said Fahey.

Seventh Race - The Evans Frenchgate Handicap, Division II - Winners Quotes
INCOMPARABLE TAKES TYLICKI ALONGSIDE PROBERT
No sooner had Frederik Tylicki recorded his 50th winner of the season than his 51st came along right behind. Given instructions by the trainer Jeremy Glover to let Incomparable have his own way, Tylicki was rewarded with a facile victory, by two and a quarter lengths.
It gave Tylicki a 23.5/1 double on the day and levelled scores with David Probert in the race for the apprentice title.
For the Haygarth House Stud of Paul Dixon, the president of the Racehorse Owners’ Association and joint-owner of Incomparable, it was also a propitious victory, the stables at nearby Retford holding its open day tomorrow. “We got about 150 people coming - I think there’ll be a few more now - and we’re going racing afterwards,” said Dixon.
Dixon was particularly pleased that the four-year-old was now showing the performance level he had long thought the colt was capable of.
“Incomparable was a nice two-year-old. Then he injured himself on soft ground at Ripon and never really recovered. He looked like he was going to win over Newcastle the other day [August 31]. Then we held him up at Redcar last week [September 3] and we were disappointed.
“Today we just said to Freddie, that if he wants to go just let him rock and roll because he’s such a long-striding horse. And Freddie said he did it very well.
“I’m pleased for Jeremy and I’m pleased for young Freddie for he’s a jockey going places. He’s a real strong lad and gets them travelling. I like him. I like him a lot,” said Dixon

GOING FOR THE OPENING DAY
Doncaster’s clerk of the course, David Williams, reported this morning that the going for the opening day of the Ladbroke’s St Leger Festival would be -
Straight Course: Good to Firm (GoingStick 8.9 at 7am)
Round Course: Good, Good to Firm in places (GoingStick 8.4 at 7am)
Williams said: “I put four millimetres on the Straight Course on Monday and four millimetres on the Round Course yesterday. We had two millimetres of rain last night, which wasn’t forecast.
“We have had very strong winds through August, which aided drying and that’s also why there’s a slight discrepancy between the two courses. The wind has been primarily a south-westerly, which is basically a headwind straight up the course.
“There’s no rain forecast at all for the meeting - if there’s any day we are seeing any clouds it could be Friday. Potentially, we are looking at a dry four days, which would be unusual for Doncaster.
“Just light winds are forecast and we’d like to maintain the good to firm for the meeting. There’s a good cover of grass and it should ride very well,” he said.
Williams also confirmed that they have dolled off four metres from the bottom of Rose Hill into the straight for the opening two days racing.
“I’ll probably remove it on Thursday evening, for Friday and Saturday. We did that last year and it worked very well,” he said.
The stalls will be placed on the stands’ side for the Straight Course.
TRIBUTES TO JAMIE KYNE AND JAN WILSON AND FUND-RAISING INITIATIVE
Before racing today, there will be a moment’s silence in memory of the young jockeys Jamie Kyne and Jan Wilson who lost their lives in a fire at Malton, in the early hours of last Saturday.
Doncaster’s managing director, Adam Waterworth, said: “Everyone in racing has felt this loss deeply and at Doncaster we wanted to pay our tribute to the two young jockeys who lost their lives in such tragic circumstances.”
The jockeys will come out for the first race and line up in the paddock to pay their respects to the two apprentices.
On Friday, the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival will also host the official launching of a fund-raising initiative for the victims of the fire by Racing Welfare.
Richard Negus, fundraising and communications executive of Racing Welfare, explained the purpose.
“The first phase is to deal with the needs of those affected by the fire. The six individuals who survived the fire were literally left with nothing. None of them were insured, so they have immediate needs. There is also counselling for those individuals, for the families and friends of those who died and survived. There are funerals costs and there are incidental costs.
“The second phase, which is our long-term aim, is to provide some sort of memorial to Jamie and Jan. It has been expressed that a fitting way to do this would be a housing project in Malton. It’s an ambitious aim, but Ladbrokes have already committed to donating £10,000 and we are hoping other leading bookmakers will follow suit.
“Doncaster racecourse has been brilliant, Friday’s launch giving the appeal a real focus and we’ve already had offers from Sandown and Newbury for further fund-raising days,” said Negus.
Donations to the fund can be made as follows:
Cheques to Racing Welfare, 5B Commercial Street, Norton, Malton, North Yorkshire, YO17 9HX
Debit Card payments can be made by calling Racing Welfare on 01638 560763
DANDY MAN CAN
For supporters of Dandy Man, patience has been a virtue. But a wait of over two years for his most recent win - at Leicester eight days ago - has not put off the punters. In the Listed DFS Scarborough Stakes (3:45), the Godophin-owned Dandy Man is being backed to bring home the candy. Ladbrokes now have the six-year-old at 7/2 from 4/1 and sharing favouritism with Inxile, from the rampant stable of Dandy Nicholls.
In the same race, Above Limits, trained by Tom Dascombe, has found a few friends, now 16/1 from 20/1 with Ladbrokes. The two-year-old Exceed And Excel filly has all the allowances and speed to spare, if her performance in a Listed five-furlong event at Newbury last month is anything to go by. She led for four furlongs before being collared, finishing third.
Dascombe has another fleet-footed two-year-old filly in the Sainsbury’s Frenchgate Conditions Stakes (2:35). Transvaal Sky hacked up at Lingfield, on the all-weather on her second outing and punters have latched on to her as a likely improver, Ladbrokes now offer just 3/1 from 7/2.
In the New Look Frenchgate Handicap (4:20), the curiously-named Agente Parmigiano is a mover, backed in to 8/1 from 9/1 with Ladbrokes.
Unravelling the mysteries of the final two races could be tricky. Haajes has found friends in the Evans Frenchgate Handicap, Division I (4:50), shortening to 9/2 from 5/1, and there’s some interesting support for Jim Goldie’s Rasaman, who is also declared for tomorrow’s final race, the Meadowhall Fabulous Fashionista Handicap. Rasaman is now 9/1 with Ladbrokes, having been available at 11/1.
In the final race today, the Evans Frenchgate Handicap, Division II (5:25), The Tatling, who has already enjoyed a sparkling year for a 12-year-old (two wins on turf, one on all-weather) is fancied to record his 17th career victory. Ladbrokes have shortened him to 6/1 from 13/2.
