HEAD-MAAREK SEEKS A SPECIAL VICTORY IN THE ELECTROLUX CHEVELEY PARK STAKES

TOP-CLASS QUINTET FOR SHADWELL MIDDLE PARK STAKES

A fantastic renewal of the £170,000 Group One Electrolux Cheveley Park Stakes (2.30pm) is on the cards with nine classy fillies declared for the six-furlong showpiece at Newmarket on Friday, 2nd October, including crack French raider Special Duty.

The Khalid Abdulla-owned juvenile will attempt to give trainer Criquette Head-Maarek her fourth success in the race following on from Ma Biche (1982), Ravinella (1987) and Pas De Reponse (1996).

Special Duty has twice mixed it with colts this season, coming out on top to win the Group Two Prix Robert Papin at Maisons-Laffitte in July and then finishing a short-neck second to Arcano in the Group One Prix Morny over six furlongs at Deauville on 23rd August.

Head-Maarek revealed today: “Special Duty is very well. She is travelling tomorrow and will arrive in Newmarket around 9.00am. The ground will be no problem to her, she will be happy on any ground.

“Her form with Arcano looks very good; she is a nice filly and has done extremely well since her last race. There are nine runners and it looks to be a good race, as always.

“My record in the race is not too bad - I have had the chance to train good fillies. Special Duty has a lot of speed and I think she would be a mix between Ma Biche and Ravinella.”

Head-Maarek is hopeful that the filly might return to Newmarket in May for the Stan James-sponsored 1000 Guineas, a race in which Ma Biche (1983), Ravinella (1988) and Hatoof (1992) have triumphed for the trainer.

She said: “In her pedigree there is quite a lot of stamina, so if she could stay next year, why not? It depends what we decide to do but the 1000 Guineas is a possibility if things work out. I would love to do it again, that’s for sure.”

Brian Meehan, successful in the 2004 and 2005 renewals of the Electrolux Cheveley Park Stakes with Magical Romance and Donna Blini, respectively, is set to saddle Lady Of The Desert and the trainer has a good line on Special Duty as he also has Arcano in his care.

Lady Of The Desert relished the step up to six furlongs when winning the Group Three Princess Margaret Stakes at Ascot in July and enhanced her burgeoning reputation with a three-length victory in the Group Two Lowther Stakes at York on 20th August.

The Clive Brittain-trained Misheer appeared to be out of the top drawer when defeating Group Two Albany Stakes heroine Habaayib to win the Group Two Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cherry Hinton Stakes at Newmarket in July. However, the filly was found to be less effective over five furlongs at Doncaster on 11th September when ninth behind Godolphin’s Sand Vixen in the Group Two Flying Childers Stakes.

Shamandar, a six-furlong Listed winner at Salisbury in early September for trainer William Haggas, landed a lucrative prize when successful in the seven-furlong Watership Down Stud Sales Race at Ascot on 25th September.

The last Irish-trained winner was Cappriciosa who scored for the legendary Vincent O’Brien in 1990. The David Wachman-trained Song Of My Heart won a Curragh Listed race on 12th September and will attempt to land the prize for her homeland.

The Ralph Beckett-trained Puff and Nimue from the Paul Cole stable finished fourth and 12th, respectively, in the Group Two Lowther Stakes.

SHADWELL MIDDLE PARK STAKES ATTRACTS FIVE TOP-CLASS COLTS

Gimcrack Stakes winner Showcasing is among five high-class colts who will contest the £183,400 Group One Shadwell Middle Park Stakes (3.05pm) at Newmarket on Friday, 2nd October.

The John Gosden-trained colt goes for the prestigious six-furlong contest and will attempt to emulate his sire, Oasis Dream, who won the 2002 Middle Park Stakes for Gosden en route to establishing himself as champion sprinter the following season.

Like his sire, Showcasing is a Juddmonte Farms home-bred and sports the colours of Khalid Abdulla. The colt made it two wins from three starts when striding clear of a smart field to win the Group Two Gimcrack Stakes over the distance at York in August.

Showcasing faces stiff competition with highly-touted Irish raider Arctic, an unbeaten Group Three winner, while Awzaan, Poet’s Voice and Radiohead have each landed notable Group Two contests.

The Tracey Collins-trained Arctic swept aside Air Chief Marshal for a four and a half-length victory in the Go And Go Round Tower Stakes at the Curragh on 30th August and was supplemented for this race on Saturday.

Awzaan, trained by Mark Johnston, was the easy winner of a six-furlong conditions race at Newmarket’s Champagne Lanson July Festival and maintained his perfect record when completing a three-timer in the Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury on 19th September.

Radiohead was fourth to Awzaan on that occasion but the Brian Meehan-trained colt had previously proven himself to be one of the season’s leading juvenile sprinters with victory in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot and a close third against older rivals in the Group One Nunthorpe Stakes.

The Saeed bin Suroor-trained Poet’s Voice is stepping down in trip having raced exclusively at seven furlongs. The Godolphin colt captured the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster on 12th September, defeating Viscount Nelson and Silver Grecian.

SEA THE STARS HAS CHAMPIONS’ DAY OPTION

- LEADING JUVENILES AMONG 50 LEFT IN THE DEWHURST STAKES

- 67 GO FORWARD FOR THE totesport.com CESAREWITCH

Sea The Stars is among the 33 horses remaining in the £350,000 Group One Emirates Airline Champion Stakes (3.05pm) following the scratching stage, revealed today, Wednesday, 30th September.

The 10-furlong Emirates Airline Champion Stakes is the highlight of Champions’ Day at Newmarket on Saturday, 17th October, and scratchings for two of the day’s other prestigious races, the £300,000 Group One Dewhurst Stakes (2.25pm) and the £160,000 totesport.com Cesarewitch (3.40pm) are also revealed.

As well as this year’s exceptional Derby winner, the Emirates Airlines Champion Stakes could feature the last two Oaks heroines Look Here and Sariska, as well as stanjames.co.uk 1000 Guineas winner Ghanaati and Rainbow View, the beaten favourite at Newmarket in May who has gone on to win the Group One Matron Stakes plus another George Strawbridge-owned filly, Fantasia.

French trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre won the prize in 2006 with Pride and could saddle Alpine Rose and Beheshtam, while Ireland’s champion trainer Aidan O’Brien may run Irish Derby winner Fame And Glory and his Irish 2,000 Guineas-winning stablemate Mastercraftsman.

Yorkshire Oaks winner Dar Re Mi could also line up alongside the Khalid Abdulla-owned trio of Twice Over, Doctor Fremantle and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes runner-up Zacinto.

The seven-furlong Dewhurst Stakes has 50 two-year-olds going forward. A 14-strong Ballydoyle entry features Group One Phoenix Stakes winner Alfred Nobel, alongside Group Two victors Cape Blanco and St Nicholas Abbey.

The Kevin Prendergast-trained Kingsfort saw off Chabal to win the Group One Vincent O’Brien National Stakes at the Curragh. The latter is trained by Jim Bolger who has trained the last three Dewhurst Stakes winners (2006 Teofilo, 2007 New Approach, 2008 Intense Focus).

Unbeaten Group One Darley Prix Morny victor Arcano, winner of the TNT July Stakes at Newmarket, heads the home defence alongside Godolphin’s Group Two Champagne Stakes victor Poet’s Voice.

Group Two winners Dick Turpin, Awzaan and Silver Grecian, victorious in the Meydan Superlative Stakes at Newmarket in July, and Group Three Round Tower Stakes winner Arctic, are also among those remaining, along with a bevy of highly-regarded but as yet untested colts from top stables.

The second scratching stage for the totesport.com Cesarewitch sees 67 going forward for the two and a quarter-mile heritage handicap, including the David Simcock-trained Darley Sun, the current 5/1 favourite with the sponsor. With a maximum permitted field size of 34, Darley Sun needs only seven horses above him in the handicap to come out to be guaranteed a run.

Other fancied contenders still on track for the contest are Swingkeel, Electrolyser and Wells Lyrical, while Nanton, also engaged in the totesport.com Cambridgeshire, could yet bid for Autumn Double.
