LADBROKES ST LEGER FESTIVAL 2009
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
DFS DONCASTER CUP DAY, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11
GOING REPORT AT 5PM
After racing today, Doncaster’s clerk of the course, David Williams, will inspect the course to determine what watering needs to be done tonight.
“We have nice good to firm ground and I will be watering to maintain the going not to change it. I expect I will definitely be watering from the mile start to the five-furlong pole on the Straight Course as that hasn’t been watered for two days. The decision regarding where else is watered will be made after checking the course,” said Williams.
The forecast for the next 24 hours is a clear sky tonight, with temperatures dropping to 11 degrees Celcius, and a sunny day tomorrow, with temperatures rising to a maximum of 22 degrees Celcius.
GODOLPHIN LOOK FORWARD
Following Sand Vixen’s victory in the first race, Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford gave the latest update on Ladbrokes St Leger hopefuls, Kite Wood and Mastery.
He said: "The ground is plenty quick enough for Kite Wood tomorrow. As we have said all along, he wants to get his toe in a bit. It won’t do him any harm, it is just he is a better horse with a little bit of cut in the ground.
"We were not trying to be negative (earlier in the week) because the horse has been in absolutely flying condition. What we are trying to say is that he is just a little bit better getting his toe in.
"Mastery will love the ground. Again, he has had a great preparation for the race and everyone has been really pleased with him."
Trainer Saeed bin Suroor added: “With Kite Wood we still have a worry about the ground. If there was some cut he would love it.
“He will run as long as the ground is safe enough tomorrow and a mile and six furlongs will be no problem.
“Mastery is improving all the time. He is doing good work and the trip will be fine for him.”
MONITORING MONITOR CLOSELY
Ladbrokes have seen continued support for Monitor Closely, trained by Peter Chapple-Hyam, for tomorrow’s Ladbrokes St Leger. The belief that the horse will relish the fast ground has encouraged punters to invest and the colt is now at 9/2 from 5/1 with the race sponsors.
David Williams, spokesman for Ladbrokes, said: “Monitor Closely is seen as the obvious fast-ground candidate and any concerns about his ability to stay have been mitigated by the conditions. If ever there was a day that his stamina won’t be an issue, it could be tomorrow.”
Support for Monitor Closely, though, has not made the colt the largest liability for Ladbrokes. The Godolphin-owned Kite Wood still heads the market at 9/4 and Williams doesn’t expect that price to ease as the Dettori factor comes into play on race day. “As a general rule, favourites are always going to be the biggest liability and the public love nothing more than a tilt on a Dettori mount,” he said.
Williams was non-specific about how much it would cost the race sponsors if Kite Wood did hack up: “Let’s just say six figures and the rest, shall we?” he said.
The withdrawal of Age Of Aquarius yesterday (all bets refunded by Ladbrokes) has left Aidan O’Brien with two horses in the season’s final Classic, but Ladbrokes have seen little interest in the stables’ first-string, Changingoftheguard, easing his price from 11/4 to 3/1, and O’Brien’s second horse Von Jawlensky, who is likely to cut out the pace, is a distant 100/1 to actually win the Ladbrokes St Leger.
Mastery has also drifted with Ladbrokes, the colt now available at 14/1 having been 12/1 early this morning. With eight runners remaining, there could be worse bets than an each-way wager on the Godolphin second-string.
The full Ladbrokes betting on the Ladbrokes St Leger is:
9/4 Kite Wood; 3/1 Changingoftheguard; 9/2 Monitor Closely; 5/1 Father Time;
8/1 Mourayan; 14/1 Mastery; 66/1 Above Average; 100/1 Von Jawlensky.
LADBROKES PORTLAND HOPE JOHANNES “IN THE FORM OF HIS LIFE”
Paul Hanagan is looking forward to his ride on the Richard Fahey-trained Johannes in the Ladbrokes Portland tomorrow.
The five and a half-furlong handicap is one of the most competitive sprints of the year but the six-year-old Mozart gelding lines up seeking a hat-trick after winning his last two starts at Goodwood and Ripon.
Hanagan commented: “The ground will suit him okay and he’s been working nicely. He’s been in the form of his life and won the Stewards’ Sprint at Goodwood before pleasing us again at Ripon last time.
“It’s a very competitive race tomorrow but we’re happy with him and he certainly won’t be disgraced.”
RESERVE SYSTEM WORKS FOR LADBROKES PORTLAND HANDICAP
The two reserves for tomorrow’s £75,000 Ladbrokes Portland Handicap at Doncaster, Orpsie Boy and Green Manalishi, will both get a run following the withdrawal of two of the 22 declared runners early this morning.
Sea Of Leaves was announced a non-runner because of lameness at 8.39am and Cheveton was taken out because of the going at 8.47am, both before the 9am deadline for the utilisation of reserves.
The details of the two reserves are below:-
(drawn10) Orpsie Boy (IRE) (C/P) Nick Littmoden 6-8-08 Kirsty Milczarek
(drawn17) Green Manalishi (C/P) Kevin Ryan 8-8-08 Daragh O’Donohoe
David Williams of Ladbrokes commented: “It is excellent news that the two reserves have come into such an important race as the Ladbrokes Portland Handicap, maintaining the numbers in what is a fiercely competitive contest.”

Group Two Polypipe Flying Childers Stakes
SAND VIXEN BLITZES TO TRACK RECORD
Sand Vixen booked her ticket to Newmarket for the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes with a record-breaking victory in the Group Two Polypipe Flying Childers.
The Saeed bin Suroor-trained filly broke Doncaster’s juvenile five-furlong track record, clocking a time of 58.10 seconds. That topped the previous best of 58.46 seconds set by Fleeting Spirit in the 2007 renewal of the Polypipe Flying Childers Stakes.
Sand Vixen, the 9/2 third-favourite, was an ominous presence throughout the first half-mile of the race as she stalked the pace under Frankie Dettori. Approaching the distance, the Italian switched his mount off the stands’ side rail to throw down a challenge and the Godolphin filly responded with a instant burst of acceleration that took her a length clear of runner-up Bould Mover at the line.
Dettori said: “She is the most improved horse in the stable. In the last two months she has thickened and filled out and developed a really good attitude.
“We were thinking about the Cheveley Park Stakes before today and that effort has really confirmed that.”
Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford confirmed the Dubawi filly’s probable next destination.
He said: “We’ve got some really nice two-year-olds this year and Sand Vixen did that really well. She travelled well and has tons of speed. we will look at the Cheveley Park Stakes - I think six furlongs will suit her really well. For this filly to win the Flying Childers is a top effort and in the Cheveley Park Stakes we will learn a bit more from her.”

TOO SHORT FOR MISHEER
There were problems both ways for the 6/4 favourite Misheer - going down and coming back - in the opening event of the third day of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival, the Group Two Polypipe Flying Childers Stakes.
On the way to the start of the five-furlong event, the saddle slipped on the Oasis Dream filly and jockey Neil Callan had to dismount. “The saddle went up her neck and he [Neil Callan] had to jump off and put it back,” said trainer Clive Brittain.
Brittain didn’t offer that as an excuse: “I don’t think that had anything to do with it,” he said.
In the race, Misheer was close up until fading two furlongs out and eventually finishing ninth. “He [Callan] had to be at her all the way and it just didn’t suit her. She needs further,” said Brittain.
“You haven’t seen the best of her today,” he added.
Callan agreed with the trainer: “It was too sharp for her, she wants further.”
Bould Mover, trained by Roger Curtis, sprung a 50/1 shock to finish second.
“We always knew he was a good horse and he did us proud today. We had a setback at the start of the season with a shin problem, but we’ve got it sorted now,” said co-owner Hugh Downs.
GOING AFTER THE FIRST RACE
Frankie Dettori, rider of the 9/2 winner Sand Vixen, said:”Perfect ground.”
Graham Gibbons, rider of the length second Bould Mover, said: “Perfect. It’s quick but there is no jar.”
Adrian Nicholls, rider of third placed of Mister Manannan, described the going as: “Quick.”
Ryan Moore, jockey of Archers Road, said: “Good to firm. They are just knocking the top off the ground though.”
Jamie Spencer, jockey of Our Jonathan, thought the ground:“Fast.”
Edward Creighton, rider of Piccadilly Filly, said: “Perfect.”
Paul Hanagan, jockey of Rose Blossom, said: “Perfect quick ground.”
William Buick, rider of Swan Wings, thought the ground: “Good to firm, but the watering last night has made it a bit loose on top.”
EGAN BANNED
John Egan received a one-day ban from the Doncaster stewards for using his whip with excessive frequency on the seventh Star Rover in the opening Polypipe Flying Childers Stakes.
The suspension will take place on Friday, September 25.

Second Race - The Ladbrokes Mallard Handicap - Winners’ Quotes
NANTON ON SPEED
Nanton, trained by Scot Jim Goldie, sealed the biggest payday of his career with a blistering burst of speed in the final furlong of the Ladbrokes Mallard Handicap to win going away by three lengths. The 12/1 shot earned connections £32,380 for his efforts.
“He’s been fourth in the Royal Hunt Cup, unlucky in running, and second in the Cambridgeshire. He deserved a big one,” said an ebullient Goldie.
“It was brilliant today. People talked about Mr O’Brien’s horse [Changingoftheguard - who runs in tomorrow’s Ladbrokes St Leger] being unlucky in the Ebor. This horse’s tank was only half-empty when he got stopped in his run about four times.
“We rode the same race today. I said to Danny [Tudhope], the tactics weren’t wrong in the Ebor, ride the same race - and we’ve won going away. Danny takes a lot of credit.
“The wind was behind them and you could easily have been sucked into riding a more positive race. But he never moved a muscle till about two and a half out.
“Today they were spread out and we got a run no problem and when he set him alight, he was devastating, wasn’t he? I’m quite sure the handicapper will take a dim view of this,” said the trainer.
This was Nanton’s 10th career win and, coming into this race, 10 furlongs was as far as he had ever won over. “It [The distance] was a concern,” admitted Goldie.
Although the trainer mentioned the possibility of either the Cambridgeshire or the Cesarewitch, the next likely outing could be as soon as next Saturday.
“We might go to the Doonside Cup at Ayr. But the ground will need to dry up a bit for that. He loves this fast ground,” said Goldie.
Tudhope added: “They went a nice gallop and he switched off really nicely. When he is in behind horses like that, he just travels so easily.
“He has got so much ability, he's won it easily in the end. The boss said not to get sucked into the race too soon and just sit to on him as long as you can.
“He’s got a really good turn of foot and the later you can challenge the better.”
SECOND RACE PLACED QUOTES
LADBROKES MALLARD HANDICAP
HURDLES OPTION FOR RUNNER-UP
Connections of Ladbrokes Mallard Handicap runner-up Manyriverstocross are set to discuss whether to send the four-year-old hurdling after today’s run.
“It’s quandary time,” said trainer Alan King’s assistant Noel Williams. “The plan had always been to send him jumping and you’d have to say he’d be a serious horse at that game. He loves it and has already schooled very well but Jamie (Spencer) said he could go for all the big Flat races.”
The consistent Cosmic Sun ran another good race to finish third. Robin O’Ryan, assistant to trainer Richard Fahey, said: “The ground was lively enough for him and you wouldn’t want to keep running him on that but we’ve no excuses. He’s still running right up to his mark and has been so consistent all year.
“He’s going to be a really nice horse next season and he’ll probably get two miles with another winter on his back.”

DFS DONCASTER CUP (GROUP 2)
GROUP 1 NEXT FOR ASKAR TAU
The Marcus Tregoning-trained Askar Tau continued on his upward curve when coming with a late run to land a cosy neck success in the Group 2 DFS Doncaster Cup.
“He’s a proper, proper stayer and it’s exciting to have a good horse like him in the yard,” said Tregoning. “He’ll go for the (Group 1) Prix du Cadran now and there is not a lot else for him this year. I think he’d run even if the ground is testing, we don’t know if he will handle that but there must be a chance because he’s by Montjeu out of an Acatenango mare.
“The idea is to win the Gold Cup next year. That’s the plan and, although he’d have to improve a bit, I think he could do if he carries on going the right way. He’s improved a lot today from his last run and he had to extricate himself from a difficult situation to pick up there. He travels much more kindly than he used to.
“He had some time off in the spring and then the Goodwood run was a non event so he needed a bit of stoking at York.”
Jockey Ryan Moore added: “They went steady early on and I didn’t want to hit the front too early. I think he was a better horse this afternoon than on his last run and he’s won two Group 2s now so deserves a crack at a Group 1 in the Cadran. Bar Yeats and Patkai, there aren’t many other decent stayers around at the moment so why not have a go.”
Owner Nurlan Bizakov, who has three horses each with Tregoning and Jeremy Noseda, had travelled over from his native Kazakhstan, to watch today’s race.

Group Two DFS Doncaster Cup
CESAREWITCH STILL AN OPTION FOR DARLEY SUN
Darley Sun’s odds for the totesport.com Cesarewitch tumbled after the three-year-old finished a neck second to Askar Tau in the Group Two DFS Doncaster Cup.
Despite facing a stiff task on official ratings, David Simcock’s charge travelled strongly down the home straight and dug deep in the closing stages of the two and a quarter-mile contest, only to be out-pointed close home. Rider Chris Catlin put up 1lb overweight with the three-year-old carrying 8st 2lb.
Rated 94 going into the race, the 6/1 shot was deemed to be 16lb inferior to Askar Tau on official figures.
Sky Bet makes Darley Sun its 8/1 joint-favourite with Swingkeel for the totesport.com Cesarewitch at Newmarket, while William Hill and Paddy Power both make the Tiger Hill colt their clear 6/1 favourite. Darley Sun is set to carry 7st 11lb in the long-distance handicap on October 17.
With Simcock was somewhere over the Atlantic en route to the Keeneland Sales, it was left to Jenny Simcock to represent her husband.
She said: “David is on a plane on the way to the sales right now but I’m delighted with that effort. I can’t say where Darley Sun goes next but he is in the Cesarewitch at Newmarket.
“David had doubts about running a three-year-old over two and a quarter miles in the Cesarewitch but he has just done it here so we will have to see. I think today David felt he should let the horse take his chance, rather than lug top-weight in handicaps.
“He’s a delightful horse, a real lovely horse to train and hopefully we’ll have a nice four-year-old next year.”

GEORDIELAND FLATTERS TO DECEIVE
Geordieland, the 13/8 favourite, ran a disappointing race to finish third in the Group Two DFS Doncaster Cup. Ahead on the ratings, the eight-year-old flattered to deceive, and found little off the bridle.
“The three of them [Askar Tau, Darley Sun and Geordieland] looked like they would quicken up from the furlong pole,” said the trainer Jamie Osborne.
“Maybe they didn’t go fast enough early on, maybe they... I don’t know. Everywhere but the last 100 yards you’d be perfectly happy during the race. He didn’t find what it looked like he might find. We have been there before.
“He’s been given a lovely ride through the race [by Mick Kinane, riding the horse for the first time], he just hasn’t gone anywhere inside the last furlong.
“We have to think about what we do now. I wouldn’t totally rule out the Breeders’ Cup Marathon. He’s got eight weeks now to the American race, if we were going to do that.”
Geordieland was beaten a neck and three lengths by Askar Tau and Darley Sun.

Race Four Win Quotes - Group Two DFS May Hill Stakes
POLLENATOR HAS CONNECTIONS DREAMING OF EPSOM
Pollenator’s victory in the Group Two DFS May Hill Stakes has the members of the Royal Ascot Racing Club dreaming of an Oaks triumph to sit alongside the Derby success they secured when Motivator landed the 2005 running of the Epsom Classic.
Just to enhance the excitement, the filly’s sire is none other than Motivator himself.
Pollenator, a 14/1 chance, showed fine resolution and a turn of foot to match as she quickened between hot favourite Seta and runner-up Hibaayeb to win by half a length and earn 20/1 quotes for next year’s 1000 Guineas with Ladbrokes and Sky Bet. Paddy Power offers 25/1.
The first fillies Classic of next season could certainly be on the agenda for Pollenator but Harry Herbert, managing director of Highclere Thoroughbred Racing and spokesman for owners the Royal Ascot Racing Club sees her more as a potential Oaks candidate.
He said: “We will possibly look at a Guineas preparation. Ryan (Moore) said that over the mile here, the further she went the better. Certainly the Oaks has to be the target so we’ll see how she goes through the winter. She is never going to be a robust filly but she has done well in recent weeks and I’m sure she will do well through the winter.”
The filly, trained by Richard Hannon, is the first Pattern winner sired by Motivator, a fact that delighted Herbert who was quick to point out the similarities between Pollenator and her father.
He said: “To have his first Pattern winner in the Royal Ascot Racing Club colours is fantastic - it makes this special. She’s a very busy filly. Motivator was busy, not so much tricky as active. This filly is the same.
“She has done nothing but improve. After she won at Newmarket last time, we decided to come here to the May Hill Stakes. She was still very green but because she has raced a few times already, when the gap closed up, she was experienced enough to go through it.
“We were stunned when she was beaten at Folkestone but she did well at Newmarket and that was the key turning point for the filly. She looked really well in the paddock today and I was excited that she had a chance to be in the first three. We didn’t put her in the Fillies’ Mile so that will probably be it for this year. Hopefully, she will develop and then we can add the Oaks to the Derby!”
Champion jockey Ryan Moore was completing a 51.5/1 double after his earlier success aboard Askar Tau.
Moore said: “The boss said to get her switched off like at Newmarket. She settled very well. I was coming for my run and I had to switch twice because Clive Brittain's horse (Hibaayeb) went left at first. She's probably value for a bit more than the winning margin suggests.”
Fourth Race - The DFS May Hill Stakes - Placed Quotes
SETA SIDE FOR ANOTHER DAY
The Luca Cumani-trained Seta, as short as 7/1 for next year’s 1000 Guineas before the race, failed to live up to her star billing in the Group Two DFS May Hill Stakes. Although taking up the running two furlongs out, the 4/7 favourite was overhauled first by Hibaayeb, then the eventual winner Pollenator.
“You are never surprised with horses and women, but I think we learned something today because we rode her very confidently. Passing the three marker she accelerated brilliantly and went a couple of lengths clear and got a bit weak in the last furlong,” said the trainer.
“Kieren [Fallon] was surprised by how well she quickened. She went all of a sudden and he didn’t think she could do it like that. The penalty for that - and it sounds silly to say - is that she paid the price.
“Perhaps that we learned: a) that she is still a little bit weak now, and will improve with time and as a three-year-old and b) that she needs a little more restraint,” he said.
The trainer did not rule out another outing this year: “We may run her again, if she’s all right. We’ll see. She’s only had two runs and she’s happy,” he said.
The Clive Brittain-trained Hibaayeb, who was second, started as a 40/1 outsider. “I never look at prices,” said the trainer,”I came here thinking we would have two very big runs today and we were disappointed in the first one [Misheer who finished ninth in the opening race], but I knew this filly would run well.
“My filly is a galloper and she’s still improving,” he added.

Fifth Race - The Frank Whittle Partnership Handicap - Winners’ Quotes
THE PROSPECTOR DIGS IN TO GIVE SPENCER A HUNDRED
Victory for Brave Prospector, trained by Peter Chapple-Hyam, took two-time champion jockey Jamie Spencer to 100 wins for the year, with a one and a quarter length success in the Frank Whittle Partnership Handicap.
“He’s travelled very easily and got to the front very easily. He cocked his ears and I knew there was plenty in the tank and he fought them off well,” said Spencer.
“Brave Prospector was on the same mark when he won the big sprint last year [at York in June] so we knew that if he was right he had to go well. It’s all come together today, so everyone’s happy,” added the jockey.
Peter Chapple-Hyam, who is travelling up tonight for Monitor Closely’s tilt at tomorrow’s Ladbrokes St Leger, was represented by his assitant, Charlie Bell.
“The boss has said that he’d love to go for the Ayr Gold Cup with Brave Prospector, but only if the ground is fast,” said Bell.
“We were very pleased with him today. He had his ground and it was six and a half furlongs - perfect. Jamie was confident and gave him a good ride. We just can’t believe the price [the horse started at 16/1].
“We’re having a good run, let’s just hope it carries on tomorrow in the big one. That would be nice.”
Fifth Race - The Frank Whittle Partnership Handicap - Placed Quotes
CASTLES ALMOST IN THE AIR
The good form of the Richard Fahey stable continued with Castle In The Air in the Frank Whittle Patnership Handicap. The 5/1 shot could not match the acceleration of the winner Brave Prospector, but did stick his nose out to take second place ahead of the top-weight Jimmy Styles.
Robin O’Ryan, assistant to trainer Richard Fahey (who was not present today), said: “Castles In The Air’s last two runs have been his best and he’s run a blinder today. He’s in a race at Ascot at the end of the month and he might go there next.”
Clive Cox, trainer of Jimmy Styles, decided that his five-year-old gelding would take his chance today - rather than wait for the Ayr Gold Cup in eight days - because of ground conditions.
“The reason that we’ve run him here is simply how wet the conditions have been in Scotland and that wouldn’t suit him,” said Cox
“I think it’s a bigger run than we’re giving him credit for today, to be fair. He’s run in some top-class sprints. I think we’ll find easier opportunities than carrying top-weight in a race like this.”

AL ZIR SHINES
He may have just had two rivals to beat but Godolphin’s Al Zir could scarcely have been more impressive as he justified 30/100 favouritism to take the Sands Venue And State Club Gainsborough Conditions Stakes by five lengths.
The success was Frankie Dettori’s 500th for Godolphin in the United Kingdom.
Ladbrokes quoted the winner, who cost $1.6 million at the breeze-up sales in March, at 20/1 for next year’s 2000 Guineas and trainer Saeed bin Suroor commented: “He’s been a big and weak horse and is improving all the time.
“I liked him from the first day he arrived with us and I named him Al Zir after a famous Arab leader 2,000 years ago.
“He needs to run once more this season, it doesn’t matter whether over seven furlongs or a mile, and I’d be confident he’d get a mile and a quarter next season although we’d have to see about a mile and a half.
“The horse is still growing physically although he is almost there mentally and we need to look after him very well.”

Sands Venue And State Club Gainsborough Conditions Stakes
CONNECTIONS SATISFIED WITH PLACED RUNNERS
Jamie Osborne and Harry Dunlop believe Treadwell and Practitionor ran up against a class act after watching their respective charges chase home Godolphin’s Al Zir in the Sands Venue And State Club Gainsborough Conditions Stakes over seven furlongs.
Treadwell (4/1), fifth in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot on his most recent outing, was the five-length runner-up to the Saeed bin Suroor-trained 3/10 favourite, with Practitioner a further two and a half lengths back in third.
Osborne said: “Treadwell has probably finished second to a pretty decent horse. It was his first run for a long time and he will improve. It’s hard to know what we ran into today.
“He is still relatively immature so I gave him some time after Royal Ascot. All being well he’ll have a relatively busy campaign this autumn.”
Practitioner, the 8/1 outsider of three, was runner-up in a Newbury Listed contest last month and Dunlop is on the look out for a similar contest for the gelding.
He commented: “I think he came up against two nice horses there. He probably wants better ground - that was just a bit lively for his liking. But he ran well and we’ll go back to war with him. He was second in a Listed race so the plan is to probably go for a Listed race next time.
“I thought today looked a nice opportunity to pick up some prize money so we’re happy to finish where we were. The winner looks very smart.”

DANGEROUS MIDGE TAKES THE LAST
Dangerous Midge showed a determined attitude to land the last race of the day on Town Moor, the AgriArgo UK (McCormick) Classified Stakes over a mile and a quarter.
Jockey Martin Dwyer produced the 14/1 shot on the outside of his rivals and the Lion Heart colt ran home strongly to register a length and a quarter verdict over 6/1 chance Lady Artemisia, with 33/1 outsider Full Speed the same distance away in third.
John Jennings, travelling head lad to trainer Brian Meehan, said of the winner: “He did it well - it was a good handicap and he is very inexperienced. He’s a nice, big horse and he dug in.”

GOING FOR DFS DONCASTER CUP DAY
Doncaster’s clerk of the course, David Williams, reported this morning that the going for the DFS Doncaster Cup Day at the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival would be -
Straight Course: Good to Firm (GoingStick 8.7 at 7am)
Round Course: Good to Firm, Good in places (GoingStick 8.8 at 7am)
Williams said: “I put four millimetres of water on the Straight Course after racing, from the five-furlong pole to the tan crossing, and the same amount on the Round Course, from the mile start into the home straight.
“I didn’t water the rest of the Round Course because, although it was a fine day yesterday, it hadn’t dried out and the going was still on the easy side of good to firm.
“The forecast continues to be dry and bright for today and Saturday with temperatures rising on both days to 19 degrees Celcius.
“The false rail from the bottom of Rose Hill into the home straight has been removed, so they will be racing on fresh ground there.”
COSMIC SUN NOT A DARK STAR
The wheels on Richard Fahey’s bandwagon just keep rolling on; his victory with Total Impact, on the opening day of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival, was his 133rd winner of the year. Small wonder, then, that punters have latched on to his charge, Cosmic Sun, in the Ladbrokes Mallard Handicap (2:05), run over the Ladbrokes St Leger course.
Cosmic Sun is the only three-year-old in the extended one mile six furlong contest and is racing off a stiff-looking mark of 94, but that appears to have put no one off.
Ladbrokes have the Helissio colt as their best backed horse of the day, in a full point to 7/2 favourite, having been on offer at 9/2 earlier today.
The Clive Cox-trained Pearly Way has not made the frame since his victory in the Stewards’ Sprint at last year’s Glorious Goodwood. As a consequence, his mark has come down from a high of 99, to the 88 he races off today in the Frank Whittle Partnership Handicap (3:50). William Buick is in the plate; offering further encouragement for backers, and Ladbrokes have shortened the gelding to 8/1, from 9/1.
In the day’s final race, the AgriArgo UK (McCormick) Classified Stakes (4:55), Thin Red Line is the one for money. The Red Ransom colt gave something of a lack-lustre display in his most recent outing at Goodwood, but if form students ignore that race, the chance of the Ed Dunlop-trained colt is obvious.
Thin Red Line is reunited with Paul Hanagan, who won on him at Pontefract in June, and following sustained support Ladbrokes have shortened the horse to 4/1 second favourite, from 6/1.
