LADBROKES ST LEGER DAY
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
YORK, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2006
GREAT CROWD
Today’s attendance on Ladbrokes St Leger day at York was 31,046 with a crowd of 48,311 over the meeting’s two days.
William Derby, York Racecourse’s Chief Executive, said: “It’s been a fabulous day and exceeded all our expectations. The racing has been tremendous and it was fantastic to see Frankie riding a three-timer.
“We’re very proud to have held the world’s oldest classic and it’s been a great effort by the team here to have turned the course round in two weeks from our Ebor Meeting for the two days of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival that have been 10 months in the planning.
“It’s always nice to see smiling racegoers and there has also been a real sense of Yorkshire pride amongst our team, who know that this has been their once in a generation chance to stage a classic.”
FOURTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
LADBROKES ST LEGER (GROUP 1)
SIXTIES IS PUNTERS’ ICON
Sixties Icon justified 11/8 favouritism to run out a facile - and hugely popular - winner of the world’s oldest classic when scoring under Frankie Dettori by two and a half lengths from 50/1 outsider The Last Drop.
Dettori, who was winning his fourth Ladbrokes St Leger and 11th domestic classic, said: “I was scared of Red Rocks and kept a close eye on him in the race but asked mine to go on at the furlong pole. He responded straightaway and this was probably my easiest classic win.”
Trainer Jeremy Noseda watched the race on television at Keeneland sales in Kentucky but owner Paul Roy announced that the Galileo colt could now be supplemented at a cost of 60,000 euros for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
“Jeremy was in Keeneland watching that but I spoke to him before the race and we said that if he ran well we’d think about supplementing him for the Arc,” said Roy. “It depends how he comes out of the race but he’s no out and out stayer as he’s got a turn of foot. We’re just beginning with him and he’ll stay in training next year although I’m not sure we’ll do a Ouija Board!
“I’d like to thank the Noseda team, especially Sean Travers who looks after him but is not here today and Mick Denaro, who rides him out. Mick’s a scouser and I was at Liverpool University and that’s how we came up with the name Sixties Icon - after people like the Beatles. There were more icons in that era than now.”
Roy is a relative newcomer to top-level Flat ownership and added: “I’ve not had that many horses in training and to win a race like this is I suppose the culmination of a five or six-year plan. There have been a few trials, tribulations and emotional disasters along the way.
“This is great but if you asked me whether I’d prefer to win the Leger or my son Sean winning at Henley, I’d say Sean winning. I’m very lucky to have had both happen.
“I went on record after France (when Dutch Art won the Prix Morny) that I wouldn’t buy another horse in training. I’ve got some broodmares and John Warren buys the odd one for me and he’s a very good judge.
John Warren, who bought Sixties Icon for 230,000 guineas as a yearling, added: “He’s a horse with a real future ahead of him and is going to be a hell of a horse next year.”

TRAINER JEREMY NOSEDA HAPPY IN LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY
Sixties Icon’s trainer, Jeremy Noseda, who is in Lexington, Kentucky, for the Keeneland Yearling Sale, was interviewed by Channel 4 Racing.
He said: “Sixties Icon could not have done it better and it is a fabulous feeling to win the Ladbrokes St Leger.
“I am absolutely thrilled and could not ask for anything more, as well as being relieved.
“I had expected it to happen for a few weeks now but with a lot of talk about us being out of form even I was beginning to believe people though I knew the horse and rest of my string were in top order.
“I am absolute thrilled, a great day - a big thank you to all my staff at home, Mick who rides the horse and all my head men.
“A big thank you also to Paul & Susan Roy for all their support of the yard - a big, big day.
“Yes, I could believe how well he was going - he was better than at Goodwood. To be honest I thought he was an absolute certainty - that is why the pressure was on - I didn’t expect anything other than winning and winning well.
“Supplementing to the Arc sounds rather ambitious but I will get home and have a chat with the Roys and see where to go.”

DETTORI’S 100TH OF THE YEAR
Frankie Dettori, winning his fourth Ladbrokes St Leger on Sixties Icon who was his 100th winner of the year in Britain, said: “My 100th winner - what a race to celebrate it with.
“What a fabulous horse he is. He settled and I could not believe how easily he was going.
“I was scared of Red Rocks so I kept a close eye on him but oce I lost sight if him at the furlong pole Sixties Icon responded straightaway and it was one of my easiest Classic victories.
“The feeling is great - when I heard the crowd screaming, you get a real buzz.”

Sixties Icon
Sixties Icon boasts a superb pedigree, by the 2001 Vodafone Derby winner Galileo out of the 2000 Vodafone Oaks heroine, Love Divine. Bred in Newmarket by Trevor Harris’ Lordship Stud, he was sold for 230,000 guineas to John Warren at Tattersalls in October, 2004, on behalf of Paul and Susan Roy. Unraced as a two-year-old, his debut came at Newmarket’s Craven Meeting on April 18, 2006, when he showed promise to finish sixth in a 10-furlong maiden behind Markovitch. He duly confirmed that he was a horse for the future with success in a 10-furlong maiden at Windsor on May 8, when he was three quarters of a length too strong for Fleeting Memory. Sixties Icon then took a huge step up in class to contest the Vodafone Derby at Epsom on June 3 and ran a superb race, staying on stoutly to finish seventh, beaten just over five lengths, behind Sir Percy. Another solid effort followed at Royal Ascot with third in the King Edward VII Stakes, beaten under three lengths by Papal Bull. On his latest appearance, Sixties Icon duly advertised his credentials for the Ladbrokes St Leger by winning the BGC (Gordon Stakes) in impressive fashion at Glorious Goodwood on August 1. Sixties Icon’s owner Paul Roy was at Liverpool University in the 1960s and had the likes of George Best, the Beatles and Bobby Moore in mind when naming the horse who won today’s Ladbrokes St Leger in great style.
Susan Roy
Susan Roy is the wife of investment banker Paul Roy, founder of NewSmith Capital Partners, which he set up having previously worked for Merrill Lynch, where he was co president of the Global Markets and Investment Banking division. The Liverpool University-educated Paul Roy, the son of a one-time Smithfields butcher who went on to own an Epsom butcher’s shop, and his wife Susan are based at Ascot and have five children. The first horse in which they had a share was On The Hooch, a jumper trained by Sue Bradburne in the early 1990s, but despite Paul Roy’s friendship with top National Hunt owner Andy Stewart, they now concentrate on the Flat, with their string in England split between Jeremy Noseda, Brian Meehan and Peter Chapple-Hyam. The best horses owned to date by the Roys include Wilko, successful in the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, Sarava, the shock 70/1 winner of the 2002 Belmont Stakes and Dutch Art, who was bought privately in June following the death of the exciting Major’s Cast. Dutch Art has gone on to win the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Group 1 Prix Morny at Deauville. Sarava, who was initially handled by Brian Meehan, was with Kenny McPeek at the time of his Belmont Stakes victory, while the Roys have also had horses in the USA with Bob Baffert. Paul Roy bought the couple’s distinctive mauve colours at a Sotheby’s auction and - a superstitious owner - he likes to wear a mauve tie when watching his runners.

Jeremy Noseda
Born on September 17, 1963, Jeremy Noseda is based in Newmarket, where he has held a licence since 1998. Noseda, who grew up in London, was not born into a racing background, but loved the sport enough to learn to ride, and he spent summers working for trainers Brian Swift and Jeremy Tree. He was assistant to Arundel-based handler John Dunlop (for six years), John Gosden (five years), and Sheikh Mohammed's global training operation, Godolphin (two years). Following the successes of Lammtarra in 1995, he was offered a training position in France by Sheikh Mohammed, but Noseda decided to become a public handler in California. Returning from the United States at the end of 1997, Noseda began training in this country with an initial string of about 50 horses, winning 18 races in 1998, his first full season at Shalfleet Stables in Newmarket. These successes included Noseda's first Pattern win in Britain in the Group Two Cherry Hinton Stakes at Newmarket, followed by a Group One victory in the Cheveley Park Stakes at the same course, both achieved by Wannabe Grand, who Noseda called his "iron filly". Wannabe Grand finished second in the 1999 1000 Guineas and Noseda's Kalypso Katie came close to Classic success when second to Love Divine in the 2000 Vodafone Oaks. His first Classic success came at the Curragh this year when Araafa took the Irish 2,000 Guineas. Araafa subsequently won the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot while Sander Camillo also won at Royal Ascot and is ante-post favourite for next year’s Stan James 1000 Guineas. Other good horses trained by Noseda include Balmont, Cassis, Peak To Creak, Just James and Carry On Katie while last season his best horse was Sussex Stakes victor Proclamation. In 2004, Noseda made a successful visit to the USA when Wilko landed the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

Frankie Dettori
Born in Milan on December 15, 1970, the son of Gianfranco, a multiple champion jockey in Italy, Frankie Dettori arrived from his homeland to join Luca Cumani’s Newmarket yard as an apprentice in July, 1985. His first success came on Rif at Turin, Italy, on November 16, 1986, and he rode his first British winner on Lizzy Hare at Goodwood on June 9, 1987. He was champion British apprentice in 1989 and passed 100 winners for the first time in 1990 when recording 141 successes. He has since captured the hearts of racegoers with his flamboyant style, phenomenal riding successes, and charisma in and out of the saddle. Champion jockey in 1994, 1995 and 2004, Dettori created history when riding all seven winners on the first-day card at the Ascot Festival in September, 1996. His ground-breaking exertions brought recognition beyond racing’s own sphere when he was voted into third place in the 1996 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards and was a team captain on ‘A Question Of Sport’. Dettori is bidding for a second consecutive Ladbrokes St Leger victory - following Scorpion at Doncaster 12 months ago - and a fourth in total. While victory in the Vodafone Derby still eludes Dettori, Cape Verdi’s win in the 1998 1000 Guineas means that he has tasted success in all four other domestic Classics at least once, as well as a host of high-profile international successes, including the 1995 and 2002 Arcs on Lammtarra and Marienbard respectively, the Japan Cup on Singspiel in 1996 and Falbrav in 2002, the Dubai World Cup on Dubai Millennium (2000), Moon Ballad (2003) and Electrocutionist (2006) and the Breeders’ Cup Turf on Daylami in 1999 and in 2001 on Fantastic Light. Dettori, who is retained by the Godolphin team, survived an horrific plane crash at Newmarket in 2000 in which the pilot was killed. He is married to Catherine with five children, and his autobiography ‘Frankie’ came out in 2004. He won his fourth Ladbrokes St Leger today.
HILLS AND DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE PLEASED - ROCKS TEAM “BEATEN FAIR AND SQUARE” IN LADBROKES ST LEGER
Trainer Barry Hills was understandably pleased with the effort of 50/1 shot The Last Drop, beaten two and a half lengths into second in the £475,000 Ladbrokes St Leger for locally-based owner Jack Hanson.
Ridden by Michael Hills, the Galileo colt put up a great performance, only finding facile winner Sixties Icon too powerful.
Barry Hills said: “The Last Drop has run a great race, a real cracker.
“He was wrong in the middle of the year but ran well in the Great Voltigeur (finished fourth) and had improved since then so we were hopeful of a good run.
“Next year, he will hopefully make up into a nice stayer - it will be nice to have a horse in the yard who can go for the big cup races.
“He might have another run this year, we will see how he is.”
Jamie McCalmont, Racing Manager to owner Paul Reddam, said of Red Rocks, a further length back in third: “The winner won fair and square - what more can I say?
“Today was probably just a bit too far for him but he has been a great horse all year for his owner Mr Reddam and should hopefully give us some fun again next season.
“Brian Meehan and all his team have done a great job and Mr Reddam is very lucky to have a horse like him.
“Hopefully, we can win a big one with him one day as he has been so consistent all through the season.”
Ask was a further head back in fourth and his part owner, the Duke of Devonshire, was more than happy with the effort of the Sadler’s Wells colt.
The Duke, who owns Ask in partnership with Sue Magnier, said: “I was really pleased with that run.
“The ground was probably a bit too soft for him when he was second here last time out but we thought it was worth taking a chance with him today.
“There was certainly no disgrace in his effort today and it has proved worth having a go.
“I will have to discuss it with Mr Magnier, but I would think he will stay in training next year.
“He didn’t run at two and has only had six runs this year, so you would hope he is still open to a wee bit of improvement.”
First race winning quotes
BELIEVER CAPTURES PORTLAND
Fantasy Believer continued his good recent run of form with victory in the Ladbrokes Portland Handicap, the opening race on Ladbrokes St Leger day and run over the new distance for York of five furlongs and 89 yards.
The eight-year-old showed a powerful turn of foot inside the final furlong to turn the competitive sprint handicap into a procession, scoring by three lengths from One Putra in the hands of Jimmy Quinn.
Successful trainer John Quinn commented: “It’s amazing but he seems to have become quicker at the age of eight!
“He’s been better than ever this season and will now go for the Ayr Gold Cup next Saturday, fingers crossed. He’s run well at Ayr before and goes there in top form - he already had a 5lb penalty for his win at Goodwood last time which got him into the race and I think he gets another 3lb for winning today.
“Jimmy Quinn will ride him again at Ayr.
“It was lovely to win a Portland Handicap and he was very impressive today - I think I must still be learning how to train him!
“My main worry today was that he had run 11 times at York before and been favourite for six of those runs, but had only been placed once.”
Jimmy Quinn commented: “I was trying to get as much cover as possible but I thought oh my god at half-way because they had gone hard and I had plenty to do.”
Fantasy Believer is now 10/1 (from 20/1) with Ladbrokes, 12/1 (from 20/1) with totesport and William Hill and 12/1 (from 18/1) with Stan James for the totesport Ayr Gold Cup.
GROUND STILL JUST ON EASY SIDE
Jockeys riding in the opening Ladbrokes Portland Handicap considered the ground to be just riding on the easy side of good.
Micky Fenton and Jimmy Quinn said “it’s a bit on the dead side” while James Doyle added “it’s nice ground, just good.”
Richard Hills called it “tacky, just on the slow side of good” and both Robert Winston and Martin Dwyer said that the ground was “on the easy side of good.”
SECOND RACE WINNING QUOTES
THE SPORTSMAN NEWSPAPER CHAMPAGNE STAKES (GROUP 2)
EQUINE SPRINGS 16/1 SURPRISE
The Eoghan O’Neill-trained Vital Equine sprang a 16/1 shock in The Sportsman Newspaper Champagne Stakes when holding on from the fast-finishing Eagle Mountain to score by half a length.
The victory was not a total surprise to O’Neill, who sent out Silent Times to dead-heat for first in last year’s renewal.
“Since January I’ve thought he was the best two-year-old we had and he’s going to have no trouble getting a mile this year,” said O’Neill.
The Danetime colt - who remains unbeaten after three starts - is as short as 20/1 with Coral for next year’s Stan James 2000 Guineas and O’Neill added: “We’ll probably give him one more start this season and put him away. He’s in the National Stakes on Sunday, he’s everywhere and I don’t know where he’ll go.
“He was never going to run anywhere but here after his last win because we thought he’d get his ground here, which he did.
“I ride him out myself every day and he’s just like a pony or jumper at home but he’s tough as nails on the racecourse. He’s a by a great sire (Danetime) and only cost 24,000 guineas at Doncaster.”

SOFTER & FURTHER MAY HAVE HELPED RUNNER-UP,
HUFFER PREDICTING BIG THINGS FOR COCKNEY
Owner Derrick Smith thought that a longer trip and softer ground would have helped Eagle Mountain, the half-length runner-up in Group Two The Sportsman Newspaper Champagne Stakes.
Smith, who owns the Rock Of Gibraltar colt in partnership with Sue Magnier and Michael Tabor, commented: “He’s crying out for a mile and maybe softer ground would have helped him.
“He may run again this season - we will have to discuss plans with Aidan O’Brien.”
Trainer Geoff Huffer was very satisfied with the effort of Cockney Rebel, a further short-head back in third.
The Newmarket handler explained: “He’s a very good horse but is just a bit weak on the leg.
“With a winter on his back, he will be a proper horse and we are looking forward to next year with him.
“He as run his heart out and had a lot of good horses behind him today.
“I really think he could be one of the best I’ve had.”
Third race winning quotes
IFFRAAJ HANDS GODOLPHIN SOME COMPENSATION
Today started with devastating news for the Maktoum family’s Godolphin operation that stable star Electrocutionist had died of a heart attack, but the organisation gained some compensation when Iffraaj landed the Group Two GNER Park Stakes at York.
Ridden by Frankie Dettori, the five-year-old Zafonic horse came with a strong run entering the final furlong to score by three-quarters of a length from Somnus.
Saeed bin Suroor, Godolphin’s trainer, commented: “We started today with bad news but have finished it with some good news.
“Electrocutionist was the number one horse in the stable. He won the Dubai World Cup and was successful in two of his four runs for us, finishing second on the other two starts.
“He went into hospital in Newmarket earlier this week as he did not seem to happy and was sweating a lot.
“Last night he still seemed OK but then we heard he had passed away this morning.
“He was a great horse and all the team will miss him.
“Electrocutionist was a very kind horse, very easy to train and always gave his best.”
Looking back on the success of Iffraaj, bin Suroor added: “We are really happy with Iffraaj - he has improved throughout the season.
“We were disappointed when he just got beaten in the July Cup at Newmaket but he then won well at Goodwood and came back really well after that run.
“His main target now is the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Today gave me confidence as he stayed on really well. He was doing his best work in the last 100 yards. We will go to the Breeders’ Cup with great hope.
“There is a possibility he could run at Longchamp before going to America - we have to look at all our options.
“The key to this horse is faster ground.”

FRANKIE GAINS WINNER ON IFFRAAJ FOR GODOLPHIN
Frankie Dettori had to work on Iffraaj to get the five-year-old to justify favouritism in the Group Two GNER Park Stakes at York today.
The winning rider said: “He got a little bit lazy on me today so he had me a bit worried.
“I had to ask him for an extra effort but luckily he gave it to me. He is a big horse who takes a lot of persuading.
“I had a quiet chat with him and I said if you don’t go on I will kick your butt.
“Seven furlongs is his ideal distance but, on today’s running, I think even a mile is within his reach.”
THIRD RACE PLACED QUOTES
GNER PARK STAKES (GROUP 2)
GAME SOMNUS TAKES SECOND
The Tim Easterby-trained Somnus ran on to finish an excellent three-quarters of a length second in the Group 2 GNER Park Stakes.
“John (Egan) said that if things had gone right for him last Saturday at Haydock he’d have been there or thereabouts in the Sprint Cup but he just couldn’t get a blow,” said Easterby.
“But what a horse. He’s run a cracking race, an absolute blinder, today and he will go to Longchamp (for the Prix de la Foret) next if the ground is right for him and he is OK.”
FIFTH RACE QUOTES
LIGHT GIVES GODOLPHIN SECOND WINNER OF THE DAY
Godolphin enjoyed its second winner of the afternoon when the talented but quirky Echo Of Light captured the Group Three Grahame Stowe Bateson Family Law Unit Strensall Stakes under a fine front-running ride from Frankie Dettori, giving the popular rider a treble on the day.
Echo Of Light made all the running to justify 5/2 favouritism, proving two and a half lengths too strong for Stage Gift.
Trainer Saeed bin Suroor commented: “Echo Of Light is a good horse but is a little moody and can be a bit too keen.
“The key is to get him relaxed. You know early on the result with this horse.
“I told Frankie to try and keep the horse relaxed and he has given him a great ride.
“That was his second Group Three win.
“I think Echo Of Light has shown he is equally effective between a mile and a mile and a quarter.
“We have no plans for him at this time, but we will try and find him another race before the end of the season.”
WINSTON SUSPENDED
Jockey Robert Winston has been suspended for one day following his ride on Stage Gift in the Grahame Stowe Bateson Strensall Stakes.
The stewards found that Winston’s mount had interfered with Sienna Storm just inside the three-furlong marker and that this was a result of careless riding, with Winston making a manoeuvre to his right. He was therefore found guilty under Rule 153 (iii).
The suspension will take place on Wednesday, September 20.
SIXTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
KEEPMOAT MAY HILL STAKES (GROUP 2)
PERFECT END TO DAY FOR NOSEDA
Sixties Icon’s trainer Jeremy Noseda continued a memorable day when Simply Perfect ran out a gutsy length and a quarter winner of the Group 2 Keepmoat May Hill Stakes.
Noseda is attending the sales but the filly’s part-owner Derrick Smith said: “She’s a nice filly and Kieren (Fallon) thought that she was a bit unlucky last time in Ireland and to give her another try. She’s a really tough filly.
“Jeremy’s not here and I’ve no idea what he’s got planned for her.”
Bookmakers were impressed with the victory and both Ladbrokes and William Hill quote her at 20/1 for next year’s Stan James 1000 Guineas with bet365 and Cashmans offering 25/1.
Seventh Race Winning Quotes
ROHAANI LANDS THE LAST
Rohaani landed the final race of the 2006 Ladbrokes St Leger Festival at York, the Symphony Group Chamossaire Handicap, for owner Hamdan Al Maktoum, trainer Sir Michael Stoute and jockey Richard Hills.
The winner, a 5/1 chance, came with a strong run entering the final furlong to overhaul Topatoo and Kahlua Kiss, scoring by a length.
The winning rider commented: “He was back up in trip today and that suited him.
“He is a big, imposing sort of horse and has given some trouble at the gate before but, all credit to the team, they seem to have sorted him out and he broke well today.
“I was able to get him where I wanted to be and he settled well.
“He has galloped on really well today.”
GOING CHANGE
Following a drying morning, the going has changed and is now:

William Derby, York’s Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course, reported at 1.25pm: “We have enjoyed a fine morning of sunshine and warm temperatures, meaning that the going is now good all over, having previously been good, good to soft in places.”

William Derby, Clerk of the Course and Chief Executive at York, reported: “With a nice sunny morning, I couldn’t rule out that we may change the going to good later today.
“We are all very much looking forward to Ladbrokes St Leger day at York. With beautiful weather, fabulous racing and a large crowd expected, what more could you ask for?”
BETTING NEWS
Lester Piggott won the Ladbrokes St Leger (3.25pm) eight times as a jockey and sponsors Ladbrokes are again fearing the “Long Fellow” - this time as an owner.
Mont Etoile, whom Piggott part-owns along with Tony Hirschfield and Des Scott, would be a £250,000 loser for Ladbrokes should she land the final Classic after attracting support at 25/1 in the ante-post market. Tusculum, one of three runners for Aidan O’Brien, would also be a bad result for the world’s biggest bookmaker having been backed down from 50/1 in the ante-post market all the way down to his current odds of 7/1.
In other St Leger moves, Jadalee is now 7/1 (from 8/1) with Paddy Power.
Thousand Words was available at 9/4 with Ladbrokes last night for the Sportsman Newspaper Champagne Stakes (2.35pm) but that had gone by this morning when he was cut to 2/1. However, that price is now the best available odds for the Dansili colt, who is out to add to Barry Hills’ impressive record in the Group Two event.
In opening Ladbrokes Portland Handicap (2.05pm), Pivotal’s Princess has attracted support and is into 7/1 from 10/1 with Stan James. Paddy Power have cut Hogmaneigh to 5/1 (from 11/2) and King Orchisios to 14/1 (from 16/1) while outsider Texas Gold is into 20/1 (from 25/1) with Stan James.
Godolphin’s Iffraaj is hardening in the GNER Park Stakes (3.10pm), coming into 8/11 (from 5/6) with Paddy Power and 8/11 (from 4/5) with Stan James. Tough campaigner Quitio is into 6/1 (from 7/1) with Paddy Power and 7/1 (from 8/1) with Stan James, who also report support for outsider Mac Love (28/1 from 40/1).
Stage Gift has been shortened into 3/1 (from 7/2) with Paddy Power in the Grahame Stowe Bateson Family Law Unit Strensall Stakes (4.25pm).
MISS YORK CROWNED BEST DRESSED LADY IN YORKSHIRE
Sally Cooper, a Staff Nurse from North Ferriby near Hull, today took the honour of best dressed lady in Yorkshire, and with it the first prize of a weekend away at the luxurious Alwark Manor Hotel near York.
The winner, who works at the Royal East Yorkshire Eye Hospital, took the coveted title after seeing off finely apparelled rivals representing seven Yorkshire racecourses, consisting of Beverley, Catterick, Pontefract, Ripon, Thirsk, Doncaster and Wetherby.
Each finalist qualified after winning heats at their respective racecourses. Cooper took her place in the final after being crowned Miss York 2006 at the Ebor Festival on the Knavesmire in August, when she was rewarded with a three-day break in Dubai.
The competition, which took place in the winner’s enclosure prior to racing, was compered by Channel 4 racing’s Derek Thompson, and judged by Mark Nesbitt of Alwark Manor Hotel and TV presenter Christa Ackroyd, who is a familiar face on the BBC’s Look North programme.
Cooper was overjoyed with her victory, saying: “That was totally unexpected - I’m overwhelmed!
“It was a spur of the moment thing when I entered the original competition here in August, and it was a great surprise to win that day. I won a trip to Dubai, and I’m looking forward to heading out there in November.
“I came here today to represent York, which is a great honour, but when I saw the beautiful ladies here, I never thought I’d win again. I’m thrilled!”

3.45pm £475,000, THE LADBROKES ST LEGER 1m 5f 197yds
1) (1) 32102 ASK 3-9-00 (The Duke of Devonshire & Sue Magnier) Sir Michael Stoute/Robert Winston BP= 25/1
He is a handicapper attempting to step up sharply in class. It is his trainer’s unlucky race.
2) (10) 112-100 CHAMPIONSHIP POINT (IRE) 3-9-00 (John Livock Bloodstock Limited( Mick Channon/Tony Culhane BP= 28/1
He has been disappointing in his couple of races but could do better here though this Classic is a tall ask.
3) (2) 1-6 FIRE AND RAIN (FR) 3-9-00 Michael Tabor & Sue Magnier Aidan O'Brien IRE/Colm O’Donoghue BP= 18/1
Second or third string for Ireland’s champion trainer Aidan O’Brien. Lightly raced with potential but has to improve a lot.
4) (3) 0-1125 GALIENT (IRE) 3-9-00 (Mr & Mrs Kevan Watts) Michael Jarvis/Philip Robinson BP= 25/1
Disappointed last time but fairly good form beforehand. An outsider who cannot be dismissed.
5) (6) 021-5221 JADALEE (IRE) 3-9-00 (Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum) Marcus Tregoning/Martin Dwyer BP= 8/1
This horse is an out and out stayer and it has taken him time in both his seasons to date to reach top form. He has been racing at downhill tracks and will be much better suited by York. He is a good price.
6) (9) 14-42060 MOUNTAIN (IRE) 3-9-00 (Derrick Smith, Sue Magnier, Michael Tabor) Aidan O'Brien IRE/Kevin Darley BP= 18/1
Second or third string for Ireland’s champion trainer Aidan O’Brien. Has raced solidly in top company and could improve at this trip.
7) (8) 1-31003 PUERTO RICO (IRE) NON RUNNER
8) (7) 032-11222 RED ROCKS (IRE) 3-9-00 (Paul Reddam) Brian Meehan/Richard Hughes BP= 4/1
Consistent sort who ran in the Ladbrokes Great Voltigeur - traditionally the best Leger trial - and he was just beaten a head, rallying well when headed inside the final furlong. He is very consistent but just may lack that final edge of class.
9) (11) 61031 SIXTIES ICON 3-9-00 (Susan Roy) Jeremy Noseda/Frankie Dettori BP= 13/8
The favourite has done little wrong but is too short a price to be any value - some of the others are close in the form to him.
10) (5) 5-12504 THE LAST DROP (IRE) 3-9-00 (Jack Hanson, Cavendish InvLtd, Sandy
Patrick) Barry Hills/Richard Hills BP= 66/1
Ran a good race when fourth in the Ladbrokes Great Vltigeur and deserves his chance to line up but his overall form does not good enough.
11) (12) 31-41 TUSCULUM (IRE) 3-9-00 (Karin Baronin Von Ullmann & Sue Magnier) Aidan O'Brien IRE/Seamus Heffernan BP= 15/2
The number one O’Brien horse won over the distance at the Curragh last month and could run well but it is difficult to tie the form in.
12) (4) 46(5)-1214 MONT ETOILE (IRE) 3-9-00 (Tony Hirschfeld, Des Scott. Lester Piggott) William Haggas/Michael Hills BP= 28/1
Excellent filly who is clearly overpriced after good fourth if Irish Oaks and she is great value - back each-way.
Summary
Mont Etoile is the clear value each-way.

The final Classic of the season, the Ladbrokes St Leger, is now upon us, with York stepping in for usual home Doncaster, which is undergoing redevelopment.
Codebreaker will examine the trends to pinpoint the likely winner from the 12 runners.
The most striking trend is that outsiders do not win the St Leger - the only real shock in recent times was the 40/1 shot Moonax in 1994 - with 18 of the last 19 winners returned at 8/1 or less.
Mountain, Fire And Rain, Ask, Championship Point, Galient, Mont Etoile, Puerto Rico and The Last Drop are all trading at bigger than 12/1, and they are the first to be eliminated.
Strong recent form is also a pointer to finding the St Leger winner, with 12 of the last 19 winners having scored on their last start prior to running in the world’s oldest classic.
Red Rocks could only manage second last time in the Great Voltiguer Stakes, and therefore drops from the reckoning.
Turning to the issue of previous outings, 16 of the last 19 winners ran between three and five times earlier in the season.
Tusculum has only run twice this year, and as a result is now ignored.
Codebreaker has a straight choice between ante-post favourite Sixties Icon and Jadalee.
It is interesting that in the last 10 years, eight horses have won the St Leger having previously scored in Group company at least once. While Sixties Icon landed the Group Three BGC Stakes last time, Jadalee has yet to score at higher than Listed level.
On that basis, the nod goes to SIXTIES ICON.
