William Derby, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course at York, reported: “We enjoyed a nice day today with the weather and the forecast is good for tomorrow.
“The ground was just on the easy side of good today.”
CROWD
Today’s crowd came to 17,265.
William Derby said: “I am delighted with how the day has gone.
“We had some great racing today. It was wonderful to see that grand horse Sergeant Cecil win again at York and it was also pleasing to see Wi Dud collect the Persimmon Homes Flying Childers Stakes, as his owners and trainer Kevin Ryan are great supporters of racing at York and Doncaster. Celtic Mill also gave us a popular local winner in the A1 Medical & General Scarbrough Stakes.”
BEST DRESSED LADY
Rachel Wallsworth, who hails from Liversidge near Leeds, was the lucky winner of the Best Dressed Lady Racegoer competition.
Rachel wins a three-night short-break holiday to Dubai in November, staying at the Mariott Courtyard Hotel. She also wins a voucher from leading fashion retailer, Planet.
Tomorrow, Rachel will return to the Knavesmire to take part in the all Yorkshire Best Dressed Lady Racegoer competition, which brings together the best dressed ladies from all of Yorkshire’s racecourses this season.
LADBROKES ST LEGER DOZEN
A dozen horses go to post in the world’s oldest Classic, the £475,000 Ladbrokes St Leger, which takes place at 3.45pm tomorrow.
Heading the ante-post market with the sponsors is Sixties Icon, trained in Newmarket by Jeremy Noseda and due to be ridden by Frankie Dettori. Noseda is seeking a first English Classic success, while Dettori is in line for a fourth Ladbrokes St Leger vcitory following Classic Cliche (1995), Shantou (1996) and Scorpion (2005).
Sixties Icon won a Windsor maiden before running a fine race to finish seventh behind Sir Percy in the Vodafone Derby at Epsom. He was then third in the Group Two King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot and completed his Ladbrokes St Leger preparation by taking the Group Three BGC (Gordon Stakes) as Glorious Goodwood on August 1.
The main rival to Sixties Icon would appear to be Red Rocks, trained by Brian Meehan and the mount of Richard Hughes. A Listed winner at Newmarket in May, Red Rocks has run some fine races in defeat subsequently, finishing second in the Group Two King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, second in the Group One Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp and second in the premier Ladbrokes St Leger trial, the Ladbrokes Great Voltigeur Stakes at York on August 22, when he went down by a head to Youmzain.
The Ladbrokes Great Voltigeur Stakes at York has provided the winner of the Ladbrokes St Leger no less than 10 times since 1986. Red Rocks will be attempting to follow in the footsteps of Brian Boru (2003), Bollin Eric (2002), Mutafaweq (1999), Silver Patriarch (1997), Snurge (1990) and Moon Madness (1986), who were all placed in the Ladbrokes Great Voltigeur Stakes before their Classic success.
Aidan O'Brien has won the world's oldest Classic three times in the last five years with Milan (2001), Brian Boru (2003) and Scorpion (2005). The master of Ballydoyle has the highest number of runners this year and his quartet consists of Tusculum, an impressive winner of the Listed Ballycullen Stakes at the Curragh on August 26, Irish Derby sixth Mountain, Puerto Rico, who finished third in the Ladbrokes Great Voltigeur Stakes, and Fire And Rain, who was sixth in the same race.
The Ladbrokes St Leger was Lester Piggott's second most successful Classic after the Derby with the "Long Fellow" riding eight winners of the final Classic. This year Piggott is represented as an owner by the filly Mont Etoile, owned in partnership with Des Scott and Tony Hirschfield and trained by his son in law, William Haggas. Mont Etoile was triumphant in the Group Two Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot before finishing fourth in the Irish Oaks at the Curragh.
Completing the field are Galient, runner-up in the Group Three Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot, The Last Drop, bidding to provide his locally-based owner Jack Hanson with a memorable success on the Knavesmire and fourth in the Ladbrokes Great Voltigeur Stakes, Ask, trained by Sir Michael Stoute who has saddled the runner-up in the Ladbrokes St Leger on five occasions, and Championship Point, successful in the Listed Predominate Stakes at Goodwood back in May but subsequently disappointing in the Derby and Ladbrokes Great Voltigeur Stakes.

Sixties Icon
Sixties Icon boasts a superb pedigree, by the 2001 Vodafone Derby winner Galileo out of the 2000 Vodafone Oaks heroine, Love Divine. Bred in Newmarket by Trevor Harris’ Lordship Stud, he was sold for 230,000 guineas to John Warren at Tattersalls in October, 2004, on behalf of Paul and Susan Roy. Unraced as a two-year-old, his debut came at Newmarket’s Craven Meeting on April 18, 2006, when he showed promise to finish sixth in a 10-furlong maiden behind Markovitch. He duly confirmed that he was a horse for the future with success in a 10-furlong maiden at Windsor on May 8, when he was three quarters of a length too strong for Fleeting Memory. Sixties Icon then took a huge step up in class to contest the Vodafone Derby at Epsom on June 3 and ran a superb race, staying on stoutly to finish seventh, beaten just over five lengths, behind Sir Percy. Another solid effort followed at Royal Ascot with third in the King Edward VII Stakes, beaten under three lengths by Papal Bull. On his latest appearance, Sixties Icon duly advertised his credentials for the Ladbrokes St Leger by winning the BGC (Gordon Stakes) in impressive fashion at Glorious Goodwood on August 1. Sixties Icon’s owner Paul Roy was at Liverpool University in the 1960s and had the likes of George Best, the Beatles and Bobby Moore in mind when naming the horse.Race Record: Starts: 5; 1st: 2; 2nd: 0; 3rd: 1 Win & Place Prize Money: £55,492
Susan Roy
Susan Roy is the wife of investment banker Paul Roy, founder of NewSmith Capital Partners, which he set up having previously worked for Merrill Lynch, where he was co president of the Global Markets and Investment Banking division. Paul Roy, the son of a Smithfields butcher, and his wife Susan are based at Ascot. They owned their first horses in 1997, with their string in England split between Jeremy Noseda, Brian Meehan and Peter Chapple-Hyam. The best horses owned to date by the Roys include Wilko, successful in the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, Sarava, the shock 70/1 winner of the 2002 Belmont Stakes and Dutch Art, who was bought privately in June and went on to win the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Group 1 Prix Morny at Deauville. Sarava, who was initially handled by Brian Meehan, was with Kenny McPeek at the time of his Belmont Stakes victory, while the Roys have also had horses in the USA with Bob Baffert. Other useful horses owned by the Roys have included Twilight Blues and Majors Cast. No previous Ladbrokes St Leger winners
Jeremy Noseda
Born on September 17, 1963, Jeremy Noseda is based in Newmarket, where he has held a licence since 1998. Noseda, who grew up in London, was not born into a racing background, but loved the sport enough to learn to ride, and he spent summers working for trainers Brian Swift and Jeremy Tree. He was assistant to Arundel-based handler John Dunlop (for six years), John Gosden (five years), and Sheikh Mohammed's global training operation, Godolphin (two years). Following the successes of Lammtarra in 1995, he was offered a training position in France by Sheikh Mohammed, but Noseda decided to become a public handler in California. Returning from the United States at the end of 1997, Noseda began training in this country with an initial string of about 50 horses, winning 18 races in 1998, his first full season at Shalfleet Stables in Newmarket. These successes included Noseda's first Pattern win in Britain in the Group Two Cherry Hinton Stakes at Newmarket, followed by a Group One victory in the Cheveley Park Stakes at the same course, both achieved by Wannabe Grand, who Noseda called his "iron filly". Wannabe Grand finished second in the 1999 1000 Guineas and Noseda's Kalypso Katie came close to Classic success when second to Love Divine in the 2000 Vodafone Oaks. His first Classic success came at the Curragh this year when Araafa took the Irish 2,000 Guineas. Araafa subsequently won the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot while Sander Camillo also won at Royal Ascot and is ante-post favourite for next year’s Stan James 1000 Guineas. Other good horses trained by Noseda include Balmont, Cassis, Peak To Creak, Just James and Carry On Katie while last season his best horse was Sussex Stakes victor Proclamation. In 2004, Noseda made a successful visit to the USA when Wilko landed the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Ladbrokes St Leger record: No previous runners
Frankie Dettori
Born in Milan on December 15, 1970, the son of Gianfranco, a multiple champion jockey in Italy, Frankie Dettori arrived from his homeland to join Luca Cumani’s Newmarket yard as an apprentice in July, 1985. His first success came on Rif at Turin, Italy, on November 16, 1986, and he rode his first British winner on Lizzy Hare at Goodwood on June 9, 1987. He was champion British apprentice in 1989 and passed 100 winners for the first time in 1990 when recording 141 successes. He has since captured the hearts of racegoers with his flamboyant style, phenomenal riding successes, and charisma in and out of the saddle. Champion jockey in 1994, 1995 and 2004, Dettori created history when riding all seven winners on the first-day card at the Ascot Festival in September, 1996. His ground-breaking exertions brought recognition beyond racing’s own sphere when he was voted into third place in the 1996 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards and was a team captain on ‘A Question Of Sport’. Dettori is bidding for a second consecutive Ladbrokes St Leger victory - following Scorpion at Doncaster 12 months ago - and a fourth in total. While victory in the Vodafone Derby still eludes Dettori, Cape Verdi’s win in the 1998 1000 Guineas means that he has tasted success in all four other domestic Classics at least once, as well as a host of high-profile international successes, including the 1995 and 2002 Arcs on Lammtarra and Marienbard respectively, the Japan Cup on Singspiel in 1996 and Falbrav in 2002, the Dubai World Cup on Dubai Millennium (2000), Moon Ballad (2003) and Electrocutionist (2006) and the Breeders’ Cup Turf on Daylami in 1999 and in 2001 on Fantastic Light. Dettori, who is retained by the Godolphin team, survived an horrific plane crash at Newmarket in 2000 in which the pilot was killed. He is married to Catherine with five children, and his autobiography ‘Frankie’ came out in 2004.

Red Rocks
A tremendously consistent individual, Red Rocks is from the first crop of 2001 Vodafone Derby winner Galileo, and was bought as a yearling for 130,000 euros at the 2004 Goffs Orby Sale. The colt made an inauspicious start to his career, finishing a distant ninth of 11 on his two-year-old debut over a mile at Newbury on September 16. He posted an improved effort 13 days later when third to Fire And Rain in a good ground Newmarket mile maiden. He returned to Newmarket on October 14 and went down by a neck to Achill Bay in a mile conditions event on good to soft turf. Red Rocks broke his maiden in impressive style on his three-year-old debut at Windsor on April 24, being eased heavily to record a three-length verdict over Duty. He took the step up to Listed company in his stride at Newmarket on May 27, capturing a 10-furlong contest on soft ground by four lengths from Degas Art. He then rattled off a hat-trick of second-place finishes in lofty company. He found Papal Bull a neck too good in the Group Two King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, and then went to Longchamp on July 14, when he was beaten two lengths by Rail Link in the Group One Grand Prix de Paris. His latest outing saw him run with his usual courage in the Group Two Ladbrokes Great Voltigeur Stakes over a mile and a half on good to soft ground at York on August 22, when he was collared close home by Youmzain, who took the spoils by a head. Paul Reddam
California-based businessman John Paul Reddam was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, on July 28, 1955. He has been known by his middle name since his youth to differentiate from his father, also John Paul. He first became interested in horseracing through a high school friend, Carlo Fisco, who was a Standard-bred groom at his local Windsor Park Raceway. Reddam, who resides in Sunset Beach, California, holds a PhD in philosophy from the University of Southern California and taught the subject at California State University in Los Angeles, before moving into the mortgage business. He established the loans company Ditech.com in 1995, selling it to General Motors in 1999, and is now president of the consumer loan company, Cash Call, in Irvine, California. He purchased his first thoroughbred, Ocean Warrior, in 1988. In 2000, he bought stakes winner Swept Overboard, who, along with Elloluv, won over $1 million in prize money for Reddam. Elloluv, winner of the Grade One Ashland Stakes at Keeneland in 2003, was named after the affectionate term used for his British-born wife Zillah, who presumably also inspired the naming of his stakes winner, Zillah The Hun. Reddam also campaigned Grade One winners Ten Most Wanted (2003 Travers Stakes), in whom he had a 10% share, Sharp Lisa (2005 Las Virgenes Stakes) and Pt’s Grey Eagle (Ancient Title Breeders’ Cup Handicap). He purchased a 75% stake in Wilko from Paul and Susan Roy in 2004, and saw the colt carry his colours to victory in that season’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. He has approximately 40 horses in training with Craig Dollase, Doug O’Neill, Mark Hening and Ben Cecil in America as well as Brian Meehan and Jeremy Noseda in Britain, where his interests are managed by bloodstock agent Jamie McCalmont. He owns 20 broodmares, split between Vessels Stallion Farm in California and Kingswood in Kentucky.

Brian Meehan
Brian Joseph Meehan was born in Liverpool - where his orthopaedic surgeon father, Conor, was based at the time - on June 16, 1967, but soon headed back to his native Ireland. He took out his first trainer’s licence in December, 1992, having previously worked as an assistant to Richard Hannon for five years and spent 20 months with the Irish National Stud. He is married to Kim Allison, a former top amateur rider. He initially trained at Tumbleweed Cottage in Upper Lambourn, Berkshire. His first winner was owned by Hannon’s wife Jo - Connect in a maiden at Brighton on May 27, 1993. Meehan’s first Royal Ascot winner came courtesy of Tomba in the 1998 Cork and Orrery Stakes (now the Golden Jubilee Stakes) and the same horse provided him with his first Group One success in the Prix de la Foret in the same year. Meehan moved into the Manton training establishment at the start of 2006 and enjoyed instant success with David Junior, who had taken the Group One Emirates Airline Champion Stakes at Newmarket the previous autumn, in the Group One Dubai Duty Free at Nad Al Sheba. The same horse subsequently provided Meehan with the biggest success of his career when landing the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown in July. Ladbrokes St Leger Record: No previous runners
Richard Hughes
Richard Hughes was born in Ireland on January 11, 1973, and served his apprenticeship with his father Dessie, a former top-class National Hunt rider who now trains in Co Kildare and won the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham in 2004 and 2005 with Hardy Eustace. He had his first ride at Naas on March 19, 1988, when finishing tenth of 15 and enjoyed his first success on Viking Melody at Roscommon that August. He came over to Britain in 1994. He was appointed Prince Khalid Abdulla’s retained jockey in 2001 and also rides for Richard Hannon, to whose daughter Lizzie he is married. The 5ft 9in Hughes has, like his father, also ridden winners over jumps but now concentrates on the Flat. His biggest successes include the 2004 French 2,000 Guineas on American Post, the 2003 French Oaks on Nebraska Tornado, the 1996 Italian Derby on Bahamian Knight, the 1996 Group 1 Premio Vittorio di Capua on Mistle Cat, the 2001 Group 1 Prix d’Ispahan on Observatory and the 2002 Group 1 French 1,000 Guineas on Zenda. Hughes had a long-awaited first British Group 1 success when Oasis Dream landed the 2003 Darley July Cup and he went on to land the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes on the same horse. He won the Ladbrokes Great Voltigeur Stakes at York two weeks ago aboard Youmzain.Ladbrokes St Leger Record: 2004 Kong (4th), 2000 Going Global (10th), 1998 Dark Moondancer (6th), 1995 Anchor Clever (6th).

Tusculum
The home-bred Tusculum is one of the less exposed performers in this year’s Ladbrokes St Leger field, arriving in York with just four starts to his name. His racing career began at the Curragh on October 1 last year, when third in a mile maiden, and he broke his duck 25 later in a similar event run on testing ground at Navan. This year began with fourth place in a 10-furlong handicap at the Curragh on Irish Derby day, July 1, and he showed marked improvement to land the 1m 6f Listed Ballycullen Stakes by an easy two and a half lengths at the Curragh on August 26. By the great Sadler’s Wells, Tusculum is out a half-sister to both King’s Best and Arc winner Urban Sea, the dam of Galileo.
Karin, Baronin von Ullmann and Sue Magnier
With her son Georg - the present Baron - Baronin Karin von Ullmann runs Germany’s oldest major stud farm, Gestut Schlenderhan based 20 miles from Cologne. Shirocco in 2004 became the 12th Germany winner Derby bred at Schlenderhan and he has gone on to prove himself an outstanding performer, winning last year’s Breeders’ Cup at Belmont and this season’s Vodafone Coronation Cup at Epsom. Shirocco’s sire Monsun, based at Schlenderhan is regarded as one of the best stallions in Europe and currently leads the French rankings. Few in the racing world can boast better connections than Sue Magnier. Her husband John is the most powerful man in the bloodstock world as owner of Coolmore Stud and she is daughter of arguably the greatest 20th century trainer, Vincent O'Brien, who saddled three consecutive Grand National winners and six Derby winners. Her brother David O'Brien is another Derby-winning handler while another brother, Charles, is also a trainer. In the 1970s John Magnier (born February 10, 1948), the son of a Co Cork dairy farmer and stud owner, teamed up with the late Robert Sangster and trainer Vincent O'Brien with the idea of buying potential stallions as yearlings. This they did with great success, counting Alleged, Be My Guest, Caerleon, El Gran Senor, Golden Fleece, Sadler's Wells and Storm Bird amongst those who were bought or bred. Magnier subsequently bought out his partners at Coolmore - which now has huge offshoots in Australia and America - and owns the nearby magnificent Ballydoyle training stable. He has a myriad of other business interests, mainly with top jump owner J P McManus and the duo sold their 28.7% stake in Manchester United FC to American tycoon Malcolm Glazer. The pair have also invested in the Barchester chain of nursing homes, a property company that owns Unilever House in London, leisure clubs, including the Chelsea Harbour Club, and the Sandy Lane Hotel in Barbados. Monaco-based former bookmaker Michael Tabor, who like Magnier spends much of the winter in Barbados, became a partner in many of the Coolmore horses in the mid 1990s while in 2004, Derrick Smith, a former Ladbrokes trading director based in Barbados, joined Tabor as a Coolmore investor. Entrepreneur, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, took the 1997 2000 Guineas to provide a first British Classic success for the Sue Magnier/Tabor partnership, who also won that season's Irish equivalent and Irish Derby with Desert King. The duo won the Vodafone Derby in 2001 and 2002 with Galileo and High Chaparral. In partnership with Sir Alex Ferguson, Magnier owned Rock Of Gibraltar, who won seven successive Group One victories including the 2002 2000 Guineas. Other major wins include the 1998 2000 Guineas with King Of Kings, the 1999 French Derby, Irish Derby, Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and the 2000 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes with Montjeu and a run of five consecutive Group One successes in 2000 from Giant's Causeway. Galileo also won the Irish Derby and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes after his 2001 Epsom win, while further British Classic glory has come in the Ladbrokes St Leger with Milan (2001), Brian Boru (2003) and Scorpion (2005). High Chaparral, who went on to take the 2002 Irish Derby, also landed that year's Breeders' Cup Turf and then dead-heated in the same event 12 months later. Last season Magnier won both the 2000 Guineas with Footstepsinthesand and the 1000 Guineas with Virginia Waters, and, while it was Andre Fabre who saddled their Budweiser Irish Derby and Lucien Barriere Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Hurricane Run, O'Brien was at the helm when the Coolmore trio, having sent out Oratorio to win both the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown and the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown, topped up their Paris celebrations when lifting both the two Group One juvenile races. This season, their George Washington, trained by Aidan O’Brien, landed the Stan James 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 6, starting a good run of form for their horses.

Aidan O’Brien IRE
Born in Wexford on October 16, 1969, Aidan Patrick O’Brien has been phenomenally successful in his relatively short training career. After a spell with Jim Bolger, he became assistant to his now wife, Anne-Marie, and her father Joe Crowley, before taking over the reins when granted a licence to train himself in 1993. His impact on the Flat was made with backing of the highest calibre in the shape of John Magnier and Coolmore, which offered the precocious O’Brien the use of Ballydoyle Stables, where the young trainer’s namesake and legendary Irish trainer Vincent O’Brien had enjoyed so much success. In 1997, in only his third season at the helm of the Tipperary yard, he confirmed his intentions on the Flat when winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas, the Irish 2,000 Guineas and Irish Derby. The following year, his first British Classic runner, King Of Kings, won the 2000 Guineas and the second, Shahtoush, finished runner-up in the following day’s 1000 Guineas and went on to land the Vodafone Oaks a month later. The successes have since flowed in through the likes of Giant’s Causeway (five successive Group Ones in 2000), Second Empire, Saffron Walden, Stravinsky, Fasliyev and an embarrassment of riches in 2001 that yielded 23 Group One successes headed by the Vodafone Derby and the Irish Derby, as well as the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes, with Galileo. Other Classic glory came via Imagine (Irish 1,000 Guineas and Vodafone Oaks), Black Minnaloushe (Irish 2,000 Guineas), Rose Gypsy (French 1,000 Guineas) and Milan (St Leger) while Mozart became champion sprinter and O’Brien totally dominated the two-year-old division and Johannesburg provided him with a first Breeders’ Cup success in the 2001 Juvenile at Belmont Park. Last season saw both the 2000 Guineas (Footstepsinthesand) and the 1000 Guineas (Virginia Waters) go to O’Brien, who was champion trainer in both Britain and Ireland in both 2001 and 2002. In 2002 he enjoyed success with the remarkable Rock Of Gibraltar (the only horse to win seven European Group One races in a row) and also the dual Derby and Breeders’ Cup winner High Chaparral. His prowess on the Flat is matched by his achievements with his jumpers. He will forever be associated with the great Istabraq, winner of three Smurfit Champion Hurdles. Rock Of Gibraltar and Hawk Wing gave O’Brien a 1-2 in the 2002 2000 Guineas while High Chaparral and Hawk Wing provided him with the first and second in the 2002 Vodafone Derby. The following season he sent out Yesterday to win the Irish 1,000 Guineas and Brian Boru triumphed at Doncaster in the St Leger. O’Brien enjoyed further success with Hawk Wing in the Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes and High Chaparral in the Irish Champion Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Turf. It was an indifferent season for the Ballydoyle team in 2004, but O’Brien was still successful in the Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes with Ad Valorem, the Tattersalls Gold Cup with Powerscourt and the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere with Oratorio, who again proved a big money-earner last summer, winning both the Coral Eclipse at Sandown and the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown. Following the incredible Classic double at Newmarket in the spring, O’Brien added a third British Classic with Scorpion’s success in the St Leger at Doncaster. He also unleashed a raft of high-class two-year-olds and ended the season with the top-rated European juvenile colt (George Washington) and filly (Rumplestiltskin). George Washington landed a brace of Group Ones in the National Stakes at The Curragh and Phoenix Stakes on the same course, a feat emulated by Rumplestiltskin in the Moyglare Stakes at The Curragh and the Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp, while Horatio Nelson, won the Group One Grand Criterium at Longchamp. This season, O’Brien sent out George Washington to land the Stan James 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 6, Alexandrova to win the Vodafone Oaks at Epsom Downs, Yeats to collect the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, Ad Valorem to take the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot and Dylan Thomas to gain the Budweiser Irish Derby at the Curragh. Alexandrova has also provided easy successes in the Darley Irish Oaks at the Curragh and the Darley Yorkshire Oaks at York.Ladbrokes St Leger record: 2005-1 SCORPION, 2004-3 Tycoon, 2004-5 Mikado, 2004-7 Go For Gold, 2003-1 BRIAN BORU, 2002-8 Sholokhov, 2001-1 MILAN, 2001-8 Life Match, 2001-9 Saddler=s Creek, 2001-PU Mediterranean, 2000-7 Rostropovich
Seamus Heffernan
County Kilkenny-based James Anthony Heffernan, universally known as Seamus, is second rider to Kieren Fallon at Ballydoyle. He is no stranger to Classic success, having partnered 2001 Vodafone Oaks winner Imagine to victory in that season's Irish 1,000 Guineas. He also has a 2,000 Guineas triumph to his name, which he annexed in India in 1996. This is Heffernan's first Ladbrokes St Leger mount but he has ridden in numerous big races and had his first Irish Derby ride for Aidan O'Brien aboard Rainbow Blues in 1996. He had a first Vodafone Derby ride this year on Mountain, who finished eighth. Heffernan knows what it is like to have ridden a Vodafone Derby victor, having partnered Galileo and High Chaparral to win the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial prior to their triumphs in 2001 and 2002 respectively. FIRST BLOOD TO FRANKIE
Sunday Symphony turned the opening Ladbrokes Mallard Handicap into a procession when coasting home under Frankie Dettori five lengths clear of his rivals.
The four-year-old was cut to 10/1 from 16/1 Paddy Power for the totesport Cesarewitch but he is far from certain to line up in the Newmarket handicap next month.
“We’ve no plans for him at the moment but we might look for a Listed race,” said winning trainer Saeed bin Suroor. “He had come back in good form after his last run and we thought he needed a trip like this, he doesn’t have such a quick turn of foot. He was unlucky last year and also liked the ground today.”
Dettori added: “It was his first time over this distance and he really seemed to enjoy it. He took me slightly by surprise today, I didn’t expect him to win by that far, but he deserved to get his head in front again as he’s very consistent and always gives his best.
"He's much more straightforward now we gelded him, and he won quite well. The ground is good to soft, good in places, and throughout the years here when the ground is that bit slower, the middle seems to be the key. Once I headed that way I never saw anybody else!
“We (Godolphin) had a very slow start to this year and it’s a great relief that they are running so well now. We are really making up for lost time.”
Paul Hanagan, rider of fifth-placed Greenwich Meantime said he found the ground "very dead."
Group Two Persimmon Homes Flying Childers Stakes Quotes
WI DUD REWARDED WITH CHILDERS SUCCESS
Wi Dud, narrowly defeated when second in both the Group Two Scottish Equitable Gimcrack Stakes at York last month and the Group Three Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood, gained just reward with victory in the Group Two Persimmon Homes Flying Childers Stakes for trainer Kevin Ryan and jockey Neil Callan.
Travelling well throughout, Wi Dud was a length and a half too good for Bahama Mama with Hoh Mike a further neck back in third.
Ryan commented: “This horse has been so consistent this year so it was great to win this race - he saw out the trip really well today.
“I think he’s grown a little bit and Neil (Callan) actually had to hang on to him as he was hard on the bridle at the halfway point and we didn’t want to get there too soon with him.
“When you can take a pull in a race like this you must have a good horse.
“This has always been a joy to train from day one. He’s a good horse and I’m proud of him.
“He could have one more race this year. I don’t know where that will be yet - we will just get him home and see how he is.
“We have been placed in a lot of the big races this year, but when you are competing at this level you have to accept that. Last year was great and would always be hard to follow up on.
“It’s nice to get one on the board as our horses have been so consistent and run well all year.”
Neil Callan, the winning jockey, added: "This horse deserves today. Unfortunately, I probably shouldn't have jumped off on him in the Gimcrack. This is for the owners.
“The ground is a little bit dead, and I spoke to Kevin (Ryan) before the race, as we knew there was going to be a lot of pace on. I picked out Abby Road to follow and that was the one I aimed at, and I came there really well inside the final furlong. This horse is still improving, he's still a bit babyish and he looks like he's going to get better.”
SECOND RACE PLACED QUOTES
PERSIMMON HOMES FLYING CHILDERS STAKES (GROUP 2)
REDCAR NEXT FOR MIKE
Hoh Mike will return to Yorkshire later this month for the totepool Two-Year-Old Trophy at Redcar on September 30 after finishing just under two lengths third to Wi Dud in the Persimmon Homes Flying Childers Stakes.
“Frankie (Dettori) said the horse was just not totally race sharp and they had him off the bridle early on,” said Hoh Mike’s trainer Michael Bell.
“He’ll go to Redcar now and at least he won’t get a penalty in that race and being by Intikhab he gets in off a good weight (8st 12lb).”
THIRD RACE WINNING QUOTES
IRISH THOROUGHBRED MARKETING PARK HILL STAKES (GROUP 2)
CROSS RISES TO CHALLENGE
Vodafone Oaks runner-up Rising Cross, a 16/1 chance, gave her trainer John Best a first Group success when finishing with a late rattle to take the Group 2 Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Park Hill Stakes by three-quarters of a length from Anna Pavlova.
“Early on I thought she was running a bit too free but she really has got guts,” said Best. “And when she gets in a battle you know she’ll try for you. I thought she was in too much trouble to get there but she got through the gaps and Martin (Dwyer) said it was not trouble at all.”
Owner Gary Tanaka bought Rising Cross after her Epsom second and Best added: “I’m pleased for Mr Tanaka because he spent a lot of money to buy her. I’ve had two classic places but this is my first Group win and hopefully it’s come at the right time as I’ve got a lot of yearlings to sell.
“We’ll look at the mile and a half fillies’ race at Longchamp on Arc day but she could be supplemented for the German St Leger.
“People said she ran badly at Arlington last time but she did OK given the ground was too firm and the trip too short for her.”
Jockey Martin Dwyer added: "She's very tough - you can't be placed in two classics and not be any good. John Best was very bullish beforehand and he's been proved right.
"She's a very good filly and got the trip well. She just kept galloping - I had to switch her off early, but she was very brave. There's a long straight here and I was always travelling well. It was just a question of getting the gap. She got a crack round her head at one point but she's so tough and determined.
“John wanted me to settle behind the pace and I’m glad I did but at one stage I was going to disregard my orders because Frankie was going slower and slower in front. Things didn't go right in America but she's bounced back well."
Group Two Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Park Hill Stakes
FAHEY DISAPPOINTED NOT TO GO ONE BETTER
Trainer Richard Fahey was pleased with the effort of second-placed Anna Pavlova, beaten three-quarters of a length by Rising Cross in the Group Two Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Park Hill Stakes, but was disappointed that she did not manage to go one better in the “fillies’ St Leger.”
The Malton handler explained: “I am a bit disappointed as it looked like she might win at one point.
“She certainly saw the trip out well but was just hanging a bit.
“I’m a bit gutted but she has run a good race.
“I think that will nearly be her for this year. She is entered in a handicap at Newbury next weekend and she would go there if it was very soft - I will have to speak to the owner.
“She will definitely be back next year. There should be more improvement to come as she’s still a big baby.”
GROUP TWO GNER DONCASTER CUP QUOTES
ANOTHER KNAVESMIRE WIN FOR CECIL
Sergeant Cecil recorded his second consecutive success on the Knavesmire with a comfortable length success over Alcazar in the Group Two GNER Cup in the hands of Frankie Dettori.
The seven-year-old collected the Weatherbys Insurance Lonsdale Cup over two furlongs less at York last month and also won the 2005 totesport Ebor.
Delighted trainer Rod Millman reported: “It some ways we under more pressure today as he had already won a Group Two and so we were expected to win.
“The horse is a privilege to be involved with - he’s just great and is credit to all the team - I’m just the front man!
“Frankie has given him a great ride. He thought that he might have gone a bit soon on him but he has still won and that’s all that counts.
“What more can I say about this horse? He is one in a million.
“All being well, he won now go to Longchamp for the Prix du Cadran next month. The only problem is that Sue Davey who looks after him hasn’t got a passport yet! He isn’t in the Melbourne Cup. We might have a look next year but he would have to carry so much weight that I think it’s unlikely.
“It doesn’t happen very often that a horse of his age improves so much from handicap to Group class. I suppose it would only really happen in the staying or sprinting divisions.
“I always thought he was a nice horse but when he was rated over 85 I thought he would be hard to win with. He’s proved me wrong thank Christ!
“It was when he won the Northumberland Plate last year that he really started to improve. A lot of credit must go to Alan Munro, who gave him the push he needed and the confidence.
“Sergeant Cecil always takes a couple of races to come right each year and that is why he keeps going throughout the season so well.”
Frankie Dettori added: “He had me a bit snookered because he wasn't travelling, but then he came back on the bridle very quickly. He wanted to go so I didn't want to disappoint him.
“Perhaps I just went a little bit too soon but he had plenty in hand, and what a star he is. I'm very sorry it was a spare ride - Alan, if you're watching get well soon. This horse has never let anyone down. I am part of this dream.
"When he hit the front he just went right a bit, but the race was over by then. He's won a Group Two and I'm sure the Prix du Cadran in France could be a target. A Group One on this performance is not out of reach. He keeps on surprising everybody.”
MORE GNER DONCASTER CUP QUOTES
ECSTATIC OWNER
Terry Cooper, owner of the winner Sergeant Cecil, said: “I don’t know what to say. It is just wonderful to have a horse that is so good.
“What I have done to deserve this, I cannot imagine. The crowd here is so wonderful - the applause and the reception he gets.
“I cannot believe it.”
Sergeant Cecil was voted Horse of the Year in 2005 by readers of the Racing Post in the Racehorse Owners’ Association/Racing Post Annual Awards after completing an unprecedented hat-trick of big handicap successes - in the John Smith’s Northumberland Plate, totesport Ebor and totesport Cesarewitch.
FOURTH RACE PLACED QUOTES
GNER DONCASTER CUP (GROUP 2)
SO NEAR FOR ALCAZAR
The 11-year-old Alcazar exceeded his trainer Hughie Morrison’s pre-race expectations when - despite meeting trouble in running - he ran on to go down by a length to Sergeant Cecil in the Group 2 GNER Doncaster Cup.
“He ran better than I expected and it just goes to show that he’s got so much class that when he’s in form he doesn’t need to be fit,” said Morrison.
“The winner took our ground and if the race had been in France we’d have been given it. Alcazar ’s actually knocked himself today, which is irritating, but if he’s OK he’ll go for both the Cadran and Royal Oak in France.”
FIFTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
EBF CARRIE RED FILLIES’ NURSERY
RONALDSAY SCORES FOR BREEDER McCREERY
The Richard Hannon-trained Ronaldsay stayed on gamely to take the EBF Carrie Red Fillies’ Nursery by a neck from Voodoo Moon, to the delight of Bob McCreery, who bred the filly and owns her in partnership with Simon Tindall.
“She needs to be held up and he (Frannie Norton) rode her beautifully,” said McCreery. “She would have won at Folkestone last time if she hadn’t run all over the place. She gave it away, she was looking to go home when she saw the horseboxes.”
The success was especially appropriate because McCreery is a former chairman of the trustees of the European Breeders’ Fund.
“This race was started when I was at the EBF so I’m delighted to win it and perhaps we’ll go for the EBF nursery at Newmarket now,” he added. “I bred the mother and the grandmother and it’s family I’ve had for a long time. I hope she’ll come back to the stud eventually and be bred from.”
Deidre Johnston, wife of trainer Mark Johnston, said of Voodoo Moon: "She has ran another cracking race and has been tremendous for us all this season, she has only ever disappointed us once.
"She has battled all the way to the line and only gone down a neck. She was coming back again at the end.
"We will keep going with her while she is in such good form and giving her owners so much fun."
Sixth Race - A1 Medical & General Scarbrough Stakes
MILL A LOCAL WINNER
Celtic Mill provided a local winner on the opening day of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival when landing the A1 Medical & General Scarbrough Stakes for owner Peter Asquith, Richmond-based trainer David Barker and jockey Darryll Holland.
The eight-year-old prevailed by three-quarters of a length from Orientor with Strike Up The Band a further neck back in third.
David Barker commented: “He won easily at Windsor last time and that gave him confidence.
“Trainers need good horses and good owners, that’s what makes us. With Celtic Mill, I have both.
“His owner (Peter Asquith) is currently in Portugal - he can’t be off the floor yet as he hasn’t rung me yet!
“He will now probably go for a Group Three (the World Trophy) race over five furlongs at Newbury next Saturday.”
It was Celtic Mill’s first win at York but he did win the same race at Doncaster in 2004.
Jim Goldie, trainer of second-placed Orientor, now has his sights set on next weekend's totesport Ayr Gold Cup. He said: “We had to use different tactics today because being drawn one he couldn't get cover, which is the usual game plan. But he ran very well and I thought he had the race at one stage, but Celtic Mill just rallied.
"The Ayr Gold Cup next weekend could be interesting, if he gets a good draw he'll be thereabouts.”
SEVENTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
WEATHERBYS BANK SCEPTRE STAKES (LISTED)
SILVER TAKES GOLD
Silver Touch finished day one of the Ladbrokes St Leger meeting with a comfortable success in the concluding Listed Weatherbys Bank Sceptre Stakes and there could be better to come from the lightly-raced filly.
“We’ve always thought she’s a very nice filly,” said trainer Mick Channon’s assistant Joe Tuite. “She’s improved from her last run at Sandown and she’ll improve again after this. I think she’ll go any ground except rock hard.
“She has plenty of speed and Ryan (Moore) gave her a lovely ride. She’s a big filly and that is why she didn’t run last year but she’ll stay in training next season - we’ll take things patiently with her.”

RAKTI AND ELUSIVE CITY TO MOVE TO IRISH NATIONAL STUD
Six-time Group 1 winner Rakti and champion juvenile Elusive City
are set to stand at the Irish National Stud at Tully in Co Kildare for the 2007 breeding season.
The pair are moving because their current base at Huma Park Stud,
also in Co Kildare, is due to be sold at auction on October 19.
Rakti, who was joint world champion miler in 2004, received a
high-class book of mares in his first season at stud this year, while
Elusive City, winner of the 2002 Group 1 Prix Morny, will be represented at the forthcoming sales by a first crop of foals that have been extremely well received.
The Irish National Stud has an illustrious history and has been
home to many outstanding stallions. In recent years these have included Ahonoora, Indian Ridge and this season's leading first-season sire Invincible Spirit.
Hubie de Burgh of Huma Park Stud said today: “We are delighted
that Elusive City and Rakti will be standing at the Irish National Stud. The farm is highly respected in the industry worldwide, with a strong client base and is geographically well positioned - which augurs well for both horses’ futures. They are both promising young sires who we feel will fit well into the exciting roster of stallions at the Irish National Stud.”
