HOW LADBROKES’ ANTE POST BOOK HAS FARED
It sounds very odd to say that at least one firm of bookmakers will be cheering on the hot favourite Scorpion if he looks like winning the Ladbrokes St Leger tomorrow, all the more so if he was at one time a 16-1 shot and is now trading at odds on.
But that is exactly what the sponsors will be doing as their spokesman Balthazar Fabricius explains. “Although Scorpion has been favourite since he was second in the Irish Derby and an even hotter market leader since he won the Grand Prix de Paris, we have not laid any particularly big bets about him. There has been steady support for him, though he has not taken the public fancy due to his short odds, and he would be our biggest winner.”
Scorpion, a 16-1 shot when betting began, was cut to 3-1 after his fine effort at the Curragh and to 6-4 after his big Longchamp success.
At the other end of the scale, the horse Ladbrokes would least like to see win is Hard Top, who will end Sir Michael Stoute’s hoodoo over the classic if he is successful. He was put in at 33-1 when the book opened, but this was soon reduced to 14-1 and he was a 10-1 shot before he ran in the Great Voltigeur at York.
After Hard Top had beaten The Geezer in that traditional St Leger trial, his price was reduced to 6-1 and that has been gradually whittled away so that he is now down to 9-4. “If he wins he will cost us about Ù400,000,” explained Fabricius.
The Geezer, who was run out of the Voltigeur only well inside the final furlong, has been as high as 14-1 for the final classic but is now down to half that price. He has been the subject of a number of four figure bets and would be another loser for the book.
Of the others the only one to attract much interest is Tawqeet. “He was a 25-1 chance when he was put up by a tipping line a few weeks ago,” recalled Fabricius, “and we then cut him to 16-1. At one time he was as low as 12-1, but there has been little interest in him lately and he has wandered back out to 16-1.
Ladbrokes’ current betting is 5-6 Scorpion, 9-4 Hard Top, 6 The Geezer, 12 Avalon, 16 Tawqeet, 33 Kong, 50 Hattan.
WINNING QUOTES RACE ONE
orderIT-online.com CONDITIONS STAKES
“EASY MONEY”
“That was easy money,” enthused Saeed bin Suroor after Echo of Light had led from start to finish in the opening orderIT-online.com conditions stakes.
And rightly so, for Echo of Light and Kerrin McEvoy were in no sort of danger through the last two furlongs and won as they liked by seven lengths from the constantly chasing, even if increasingly remote, Khyber Kim.
Remarkably, the five runners raced in almost the same order throughout the race, the only change being when Blythe Knight took third place from Almuraad in the final furlong.
“This horse has improved all the time; after all of his races he has gone on to do better and I am sure he will continue to do so,” bin Suroor enthused.
“The only thing he has had to learn to do is to settle, but he is learning all the time.
“We will try something better with him next time, maybe a Listed race, and I am sure he will be an even better horse next year. I am sure that he will stay a mile and a half in due course, but there is no need to rush into stepping him up to that trip.”
Kerrin McEvoy added: “ Echo Of Light is still a big baby - a bit keen and what not. But he is coming on by leaps and bounds.”
GOING AFTER THE FIRST
Kerrin McEvoy, jockey of the impressive winner Echo Of Light in the first race, said the ground was “good to soft”.
Kieren Fallon thought that it was “not that bad, it has dried out since yesterday”
Jamie Spencer felt that the ground was “dead” as did Richard Hills, while Dane O’Neill described it as “good to soft”.
WINNING QUOTES RACE TWO
DBS ST LEGER YEARLING SALES STAKES
ON A WHIM
Owners and trainers, as they are sometimes prepared to admit, buy horses for the most ridiculous reasons, and Andrew Hollinrake’s purchase of Princess Cleo, winner of the DBS St Leger Yearling Sales Stakes, comes into that category.
“Some years ago I used to follow the fortunes of a mare called Classy Cleo,” he related, “and then when I was about to start looking at the catalogue which included Princess Cleo, it fell open at page 99 and that showed the filly by Mark of Esteem out of Classy Cleo. I decided there and then, on a whim, to buy her and I was able to get her for 24,000gns.”
Mr. Hollinrake is no stranger to racing success as the other horses he has owned include Regal Emperor and Misty Light, and he now has another big winner to add to his list of successes.
Princess Cleo has already ‘won’ once, as she passed the post first at Southwell in July only to be disqualified. Her trainer Tim Easterby was so disenchanted by that decision that he lodged an unsuccessful appeal, and even now he still considers the disqualification “a disgrace”.
Princess Cleo had hung to her left in that and other races and she was inclined to do so again here, but Easterby feels that she was simply following the leader, Sir Orpen, whom she eventually passed to win by a length and a half.
“I like these sales races,” said Easterby. “I won the senior section of this race a few years ago with Somnus, but this is the first time I have won the reserves’ race.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE THREE
LADBROKES MALLARD HANDICAP
SENDINTANK NOW FAVOURITE FOR CESAREWITCH
Sendintank became favourite for the totesport Cesarewitch after his determined and successful effort to peg back the long time leader Cristoforo in the Ladbrokes Mallard Handicap.
His odds vary from Coral’s 6-1(from 10-1), the 7-1 (from 10) of Hills, the 8-1, also from 10-1, of the sponsors to the 9-1 (from 12-1) of Paddy Power.
It might be worth bearing in mind, though, that Sendintank ran today only after there was enough rain to satisfy his trainer Stuart Williams. “He definitely would not have run if it had not rained; that is why I left him in tomorrow, in case the rain came later than had been forecast.
“I very much doubt if he will now run again tomorrow, but I shall have to talk to his owners Steve Jones and Phil McGovern before we make a final decision,” said the trainer.
“I very much doubt if he will run again before the Cesarewitch, not least because there is nothing really suitable to run him in,” Williams added. “I would like to think that this could be the start of a roll like he enjoyed last backend.
“For a horse who stays as well as he does he travels very well through his races, but he has just been a bit unlucky with some of his recent runs with the ground and the draw going against him.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE FOUR
intercasino.com CHAMPAGNE STAKES
SILENT TIMES SO CLOSE TO CLOSE TO YOU
After minutes peering at photographs and a screen judge Brian Goodwill was unable to separate Close To You (8/1) and Silent Times (6/1) at the end of the intercasino.com Champagne Stakes and was forced to call a dead-heat between the pair, the first dead-heat in the race for 101 years and the third in all.
The outcome promoted 2,000 Guineas thoughts in the camps of both horses, though in the case of Silent Times he is on the market and any Newmarket decision may not be that of owner John Fretwell and trainer Eoghan O’Neill. Cashmans offer 66-1 about him for Newmarket.
Silent Times, who was winning for the second time in five starts, set out to make all the running, and his trainer is sure that this is the way to ride him. “He has a great, long stride on him and works on his own at home, so I am sure that it was the right thing to do to let him go along in front,” said O’Neill, whose first Doncaster winner this was.
“And I am very glad to have been able to give a nice winner like this to Jamie Spencer, who has been very helpful in coming to ride work for us.
“That is our 30th winner of the season and we have been busy buying at the sales across the road, where we have got 16 so far.”
It was in that ring that Silent Times was bought for 26,000gns 12 months ago.
Richard Ryan, assistant to Close To You’s trainer Terry Mills, very nearly pulled the colt out after the rain softened the ground. “It was only because of his draw that I didn’t,” he said, “but that is the last time he will race on ground as soft as that.
“It was entirely down to the ground, which was tacky and holding, that he ran so badly in the Solario, but he has been flying at home against older horses and he is a monster.
“He may run in the Dewhurst if the ground is right, but he will definitely be trained for the Guineas and there would be no problem in him running in that first time out.”
Close To You, a 40,000gns Newmarket purchase last year, is shared by his trainer with Miss Jane Leighs, and has now won four times from six starts.
Richard Hannon, whose Cool Creek was a length and three-quarters and a short-head (9/4 favourite Killybegs was third) back in fourth, is adamant that is colt should have beaten both the dead-heaters. “Every time he tried for a run he was stopped and I am sure he should have won,” he said.
WINNING QUOTES RACE FIVE
DONCASTER AUDI TROY STAKES
MUBTAKER STILL GOING STRONG
Mubtaker may be eight years old but he is still a force to be reckoned with, as he showed when making all the running against sole rival Brahminy Kite in the Doncaster Audi Troy Stakes.
Brahminy Kite mounted a challenge inside the last two furlongs, but Mubtaker was up to all his opponent could produce and he ran strongly to win by four lengths.
This was the 11th win of his 25 start career, which includes three in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury.
“I think the Irish St Leger will come too soon for him, but the Cumberland Lodge could be a good race to try for,” said Richard Hills, retained jockey for the old horse’s owner, Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum.
“The trouble is with him is that he is so hard to keep sound that you cannot plan too far ahead, but I would think that the Cumberland Lodge would fit in well if he is all right at the time. There is also a race in Italy that we could consider.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE SIX
COMMUNITY UNION REPRESENTING BETTING SHOP STAFF HANDICAP
REVERENCE MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME
Reverence, racing for only the fourth time at the age of four with all the runs having come this season, made his tally two from those four attempts when he got the better of Golden Dixie in the Community Union Representing Betting Shop Staff Handicap.
“I have only had him this year,” said Eric Alston, who trains the winner for breeders Gary and Lesley Middlebrook. They are en route to America where they are selling a yearling at Keeneland.
“I am not quite sure exactly why he did not run in the two previous seasons, but I believe that he may have cracked his pelvis each year.
“I think a bit of him, but after he was second at Thirsk on his first run I felt that he was not quite right and so I gave him a long break before he won at Ripon.
“Then when he ran at Newmarket over six furlongs last time he looked all over a winner with a furlong to go, only to stop to nothing up the hill. I don’t think he will run over six furlongs again.
“He is really pretty inexperienced and that was only the second time he had been competitive in a race. When he was second he raced on the far side from most of the others and led that group with the winner on the other side, and then when he won he made all on his side.”
SAVAGE SUSPENDED
Mark Savage, who rode the runner-up Golden Dixie, was suspended for two days (September 20 and 21) for causing interference to Peopleton Brook, who finished last but two.
WINNING QUOTES RACE SEVEN
WILFREDA BEEHIVE TROPHY
AT LAST FOR ELLIOTS WORLD
Elliots World, who has been running very consistently without being able to get his head in front, finally gained the victory his good efforts deserved when he beat Subpoena and the one-time classic hopeful Rob Roy in the closing Wilfreda Beehive Trophy.
“His trouble is that he cannot hit the front too soon, but time after time this season he seems to have found himself in the lead before we wanted and something has come and beaten him. It has all been so very frustrating,” said Deirdre Johnston, whose husband Mark trains the winner.
“He was in two races today and two tomorrow and I ummed and erred for ages before deciding which one to run him in. Luckily I got that right, which is a big relief.
“He is in the big handicap at Newbury next weekend and he is in the Cambridgeshire. The Newbury race might come too soon, but we shall obviously look at both of them.”
This was the second winner of the day, and first outright success, for John Egan, who had earlier partnered Close To You in that thrilling dead-heat with Silent Times for the intercasino.com Champagne Stakes.
BETTING NEWS
With the overnight rain changing the ground and producing nine non-runners, things have been fairly quiet in the offices this morning, but punters have still been prepared to take a view and the Ladbrokes Mallard Handicap (2.45) has been particularly popular with no fewer than three horses coming in for good support.
That trio includes Sendintank, who was starting a roll at about this time last year and whose trainer made the point overnight that he would not run unless there was sufficient rain.
There clearly has been, so totesport punters have latched on to the five-year-old and forced him in to 100-30 from 4-1. In the same race the firm has also had money for My Immortal, who has been trimmed from 6-1 to 11-2.
The third Mallard runner to have caught the public fancy is Bay Story, who has been in demand with Cashmans and has been brought in from 11-2 to 9-2.
We had a turn-up in the two-year-old sales race earlier in the week with success for the 20-1 shot Johnny The Fish, and there could be a similar shock in today’s reserve version of that race, the DBS St Leger Yearling Stakes (2.10), if those who have supported Imperial Sword from 20-1 to 16-1 with Cashmans are right.
The Irish firm has also been doing business in the feature event of the day, the intercasino.com Champagne Stakes (3.20) and have brought in the unbeaten Killybegs from 11-4 to 5-2.
GOING NEWS AT 10 AM
After the rain yesterday, the going for the third day of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival is now
GOOD TO SOFT, GOOD IN PLACES.
“We had seven millimetres of rain during racing yesterday and another seven between then and midnight, though it has been dry since then,” said clerk of the course Jon Pullin.
“The going where the track runs parallel to the Bawtry Road is good to soft, but there is some good ground on the bends before the home straight, and in the straight the sides of the track have drier ground than the centre of the course.
“The forecast is for a dry day, but more rain is forecast for tonight. There will be some heavy bursts in that rain, but it is a bit hit or miss where it is going to land. If we have just the ordinary rain we shall be back where we are today, but if we get one of the heavy bursts the ground may be softer.”
