LADBROKES ST LEGER FESTIVAL 2005
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
DONCASTER, SECOND DAY, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8

PREVIEW OF TOMORROW’S INTERCASINO.COM CHAMPAGNE STAKES

A field of eight will go to post for tomorrow’s Group Two intercasino.com Champagne Stakes, including three who will be putting unbeaten records on the line. That trio consists of Killybegs and Palace Episode, who are both unbeaten in two starts, and West Of Amarillo, who won on his only appearance so far.

Palace Episode would be a very popular winner of one of the biggest two-year-old races in Yorkshire as he is trained at Hambleton, near Thirsk, by Kevin Ryan and has already won at the Ebor meeting at York. He then showed how much he enjoyed moving up from six furlongs to seven when he beat Araafa by a length and a quarter, showing considerable progress from his debut success in an ordinary maiden at Catterick.

Killybegs romped home at Redcar last time, winning a novice heat by six lengths to add to his success in a maiden race at Newmarket. This will be by far his toughest task. He is trained by Barry Hills who is seeking his sixth success in the intercasino.com Champagne Stakes, following on from Sexton Blake (1977), Sure Blade (1985), Auction House (1998), Distant Music (1999) and Etlaala (2004).

West of Amarillo is moving up from maiden to Group company and will be racing for a new stable. He was with Gerard Butler when he won his maiden at Newmarket in June, but will now be running for John Gosden.

Amigoni, who is trained by Aidan O’Brien, is trying to give weight to all his seven rivals as he is penalised 3lb for a Group Three victory in the Angelsey Stakes at the Curragh in July when he got the better of Black Charmer by half a length. He disappointed when fourth to Always Hopeful at Goodwood last time, though his performance then suggested that moving up to seven furlongs would be a good idea.

His run against Black Charmer links up with the Goodwood effort of the Richard Hannon-trained Cool Creek, who was just in front of Black Charmer when they were second and third to Sir Percy in the Vintage Stakes. Cool Creek has since been second again, this time to Wake Up Maggie in the Tattersalls (Ireland) sales race at The Curragh.

Close To You, from Terry Mills’ Epsom yard, had been enjoying an excellent season until he flopped in the Solario Stakes at Sandown, when he was last but one behind Opera Cape. Before that he had impressed when beating Silent Times, who reopposes, by five lengths at Newbury, and a repeat of that form would put him firmly into the picture.

Lake Poet, the only maiden in the field, has run creditably in both starts, but he has a lot of ground to make up on Palace Episode on York form and clearly needs to improve.

GOING UPDATE

The going remains

GOOD

at the end of racing.

It was changed to that from good to firm, good in places, after the fourth race this afternoon.

“I shan’t change it again tonight,” said clerk of the course Jon Pullin.

“I shall wait until tomorrow morning to let this rain sink in and then see what has happened overnight.

“The rain arrived earlier than was forecast, so I hope that it will soon be going away and that there won’t be any more behind it.”

CROWD UP AGAIN

There was a crowd of 15,000 on GNER Ladies’ Day, 1,000 up on the corresponding day last year,

Steven Clarke, general manager at Doncaster racecourse, commented “we are delighted with the size of the crowd, though it was a shame that the weather became so unpleasant.

“Millenary’s second consecutive win in the GNER Doncaster Cup was fantastic and we are looking forward to great racing again tomorrow and on Saturday.”

Best Dressed Lady

The weather failed to put a dampener on the popular Best Dressed Lady competition
at a rather damp day two of the Ladbrokes St Leger festival today.

16 finalists lined up in the Doncaster Audi sponsored event braving the downpour to be judged by Derek Thompson and Emmerdale star Richard Shelton.

The announcement of the winner, Miss Amanda Crossland, a local girl from Mexborough who had made her outfit herself, was greeted with great enthusiasm by her supporters.

She receives as her prize the use of an Audi TT convertible from the sponsors for a year, the only problem being that Miss Crossland does not have a full licence.

“I am taking lessons at the moment and this should encourage me to pass first time”.

When asked by Derek Thompson, perennial compere and judge, how she would fit her two children in the car she said “they can stay at home!”.

WINNING QUOTES RACE ONE
QUEEN’S OWN YORKSHIRE DRAGOONS LADIES DAY NURSERY

ANNA “DESERV ES SOMETHING BETTER”

Anna Pavlova readily defied the 6lb penalty she picked up when winning at Newcastle last month when she accounted for Urban Tiger and Louie Louie in the Queen’s Own Yorkshire Dragoons Ladies Day Nursery, in a manner which suggested to her trainer Richard Fahey that “she deserves a crack at something better”.

Quite what that something better might be was not made clear but Fahey has in mind a couple of fillies’ Listed races before the end of the turf season and one of those might prove the target.

Asked if she might be a Guineas filly, Fahey did not commit himself to anything as highflying as that, but equally he did not rule it out and left no doubt that he holds the filly in high regard.

Fahey has now sent out 68 winners this season, so he is in hot pursuit of last year’s 77. “We’re getting there slowly,” he said.

This was also an ideal way for Paul Hanagan to celebrate his 25th birthday. He has been back in action for only a short time after a four week absence with a broken collarbone, and related how frustrating it was to sit at home nursing his injury and watch the Fahey horses romping home.

“The collarbone is fine now,” he said. “Occasionally it is a bit sore and stiff first thing in the morning, but that works off through the day and it is really good to be back in action and riding winners.”

GOING AFTER THE FIRST

Paul Hanagan jockey of the winner (Anna Pavlova) in the opener on the second day of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival described the ground as “beautiful, they are just getting into it a bit”

Franny Norton said it was “just cutting up a bit”

Eddie Ahern thought the going “lovely, perfect ground”

Alan Munro said “a touch on the slow side of good”

Adrian Nicholls described it as “perfect” while Richard Hughes thought it was “the same as yesterday”.

WINNING QUOTES RACE TWO
EARTH MORTGAGES SCARBROUGH STAKES

ROCKETING MISSILE

Majestic Missile, without a win since his success in the Cornwallis Stakes at Ascot nearly two years ago, put that gloomy record to rights when he romped home like a good thing should in the Earth Mortgages Scarbrough Stakes, beating the strong-finishing Texas Gold by three lengths.

“It’s been a long time coming,” said the winner’s trainer William Haggas as he explained the trail of misfortune which has dogged the horse. “He chipped a bone in a knee when he ran in the Gimcrack, and though we got a temporary fix for him to win the Cornwallis, he just lost his form last year and I thought when I looked at him in the paddock before the King’s Stand that he just looked like a little boy.

“We deliberately did not race him much last year, and this season he has gradually been re-finding his form. I was delighted with the way he picked up when he was third in the Nunthorpe and again with the way he picked up here.

“A fast gallop on fast ground over five furlongs is what he wants and now he will run in a Group 111 sprint at Newbury next Saturday. After that it will be the Abbaye and then, I hope, Hong Kong.

“But I won’t run him on soft ground. I nearly pulled him out of the Molecomb when it was good to soft, so I might risk that again once, but he very much does not want soft ground.

“I very much hope that he will stay in training next year, as he really has not had very much racing.”

HANAGAN SUSPENDED

Paul Hanagan’s pleasure at winning the opener on Anna Pavlova was somewhat tempered when the stewards suspended him for one day (September 19) for careless riding. The stewards considered that he had failed to take any steps to prevent his filly from interfering with Global Genius and Nihal.

WINNING QUOTES RACE THREE
MURPHY’S FASTFLOW MAY HILL STAKES

HANNON ENDS LOCAL HOODOO

“I was beginning to think that the best thing to do with my horses here was to put them all back in the horsebox and take them home,” said Richard Hannon after Nasheej had put up a very capable performance to take the Murphy’s Fastflow May Hill Stakes and get a quote of 25-1 (from 33) for the 1,000 Guineas from Paddy Power. Cashmans put her in at 16-1 (from 25) for the Guineas and at 25-1 (from 50) for the Oaks.

“I have had the most dreadful time with my runners here,” said Hannon as he reflected on figures of eight wins from 147 starts in the last five years.

“The Coires was mugged on the line here yesterday and in the first race today Charlie Tokyo never looked like getting a run.

“Everything I send up here seems to get beaten for one reason or another, but maybe that has finally ended my jinx on the course.”

After Nasheej had beaten the outsiders High Heel Sneakers and Speciosa, Hannon said “I suppose we shall have to look at the (Meon Valley Stud) Fillies’ Mile now as there really is not anything else for her for the rest of the season, and I expect she will have a Guineas entry.”

Nasheej is one of eight horses in training in this country for Malih Al Basti, who comes from Dubai where he has a construction company and other business interests.

“He loves his racing and he loves this country,” said agent John Corbett, who bought the winner privately for $40,000 as a yearling. “His eight horses here are divided between Richard, Roger Charlton and Mark Johnston, and he comes over to see them run as often as he can.”

MORE MURPHY’S FASFLOW MAY HILL STAKES QUOTES

RICHARD HANNON JUNIOR IMPRESSED

Richard Hannon Jr, assistant trainer to his father, commented afterwards to Racing UK: "She's a lovely filly with loads of speed.

"I think she has shown herself to be one of the best fillies around - she's improving with every run, she gets the trip and will now go for the Fillies' Mile at Newmarket - it will take a very good one to beat her there.

"She did have a hard race at Newmarket last time but the form stands up and she is a very tough filly. She just stood there today and you wouldn’t know she'd had a race, she is so sweet and calm.

"I would say that she is a good a filly as we have had in the last five to ten years.

"The bookmakers will probably quote her at 20/1 or 33/1. She is a Guineas filly and if you can get anything bigger than 14/1 I would say take it - she is going to improve and get better and right now I don't see any more than two or three fillies that could beat her this year.

“If she wins the Fillies' Mile, she would be a 6/1 or 7/1 shot for the Guineas. I'm not a gambling man though - the prize money is good enough for me!"

WINNING QUOTES RACE FOUR
GNER PARK STAKES

IFRAAJ PIPS THE INDIAN

Ifraaj, running for the first time since disappointing in the July Cup, just got the better of a thrilling finish with Sleeping Indian to win the GNER Park Stakes by a short head. So close was it that his trainer Michael Jarvis was convinced that he had not won. “And even after I had seen the replay I was still sure he had not won,” he said.

“I think that you can excuse his July Cup run up to a point because it was big jump up after York (where Ifraaj won the Wokingham), and a lot of horses who had had runs on hard ground at York did not show their form next time out.

“He really is a tough horse with lots of guts and I expect now he will run in the Challenge Stakes at Newmarket on Champions Day, although he does want fast ground and if we have a wet spell he might have to miss it.

“He may not be a Group 1 horse yet, but I think he may be getting there slowly. I don’t think you will see him over six furlongs again, and though seven, which seems his ideal trip at the moment, is a bit of a difficult distance, the programme for it is much better now than it used to be.

We might try him over a mile one day.”

Ifraaj had to be as brave as his trainer said he was to land this prize, for though he had the lead a furlong and a half from home, he was headed by Sleeping Indian and had the best part of a length to make up in the final furlong.

Philip Robinson asked him to peg back that length and Ifraaj really put his head down to force his nose in front in the very last stride.

GROUND NOW GOOD

Following the rain during the afternoon, the going was changed to GOOD after the fourth race.

WINNING QUOTES RACE FIVE
GNER DONCASTER CUP

THE “AMAZING” MILLENARY

Millenary, who dead-heated for the GNER Doncaster Cup last year with Kasthari, won it outright this time round after an ice cool ride from Richard Quinn.

When the eight-year-old, who is still a full horse, won the Lonsdale Stakes at York last month, Quinn held him up at the back of the field until he pounced for victory close home.

“This time I told him to be even more patient, as there was another quarter of a mile to go, and he rode an absolutely brilliant race,” said Millenary’s trainer John Dunlop, visibly moved by the old horse’s display.

“He really is in cracking form now, though he certainly wasn’t at the start of the season and at one time I had almost despaired of him,” Dunlop went on. “I expect he will now go back to Newmarket for the Jockey Club Cup. At one time we were thinking of finding a little stallion job for him, but while he can keep on doing such a good job on the racecourse he may as well carry on doing that.

“It is a great tribute to the old horse that he is still so genuine and enthusiastic at the age of eight and this was a real pleasure. He is quite amazing.”

A delighted Quinn commented afterwards: "He's a classy horse and his turn of foot sets him apart against these stayers.

"He likes to relax and warm up in his races. It was a proper test of stamina - five out they just quickened up and when we got to two and a half out, they were just tying up in front but I was just coming good.

"I had a look to see how Kieren (Fallon, rider of Distinction) was going about three out as he was the obvious form horse but when I saw he wasn't going that well I then looked at Sergeant Cecil and followed him.

"In the spring, Millenary just took a little to find his form but now he's back to his best and with his turn of foot, you just need to produce him at the right time. He's been a tremendous servant."

Hot favourite Distinction, who dropped out to finish last but one after having had every chance two furlongs from home, was pushed out by Cashmans from 10-1 to 12-1 for the Melbourne Cup.

AHERN SUSPENDED

Eddie Ahern was suspended for two days (September 19 and 20) after the stewards found him guilty of careless riding on Suzy Bliss in the May Hill Stakes. They considered that he had caused interference to Spinning Queen by manoeuvering to his right, taking Spinning Queen off a true line and continued to allow her to hang right without taking corrective action.

WINNING QUOTES RACE SIX
JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION KYOTO SCEPTRE STAKES

FAVOURABLE TERMS IS BACK

Favourable Terms, running for the first time in 404 days, showed that there is plenty of life in her at the age of five as she got the better of Nufoos and Attune to take the Japan Racing Association Kyoto Sceptre Stakes.

“Sheikh Maktoum very kindly allowed us to have her in training this year as a five-year-old, but unfortunately she developed problems with a splint on a tibia in the spring and so we have not been able to run her until now,” said her trainer Sir Michael Stoute.

“But she has been working very well recently and we were very hopeful that she would run well here. The Sun Chariot could be her next target.”

Stoute also had thoughts about Distinction’s flop in the Yorkshire Cup, saying “he really is a top of the ground horse and the rain earlier in the afternoon made it far too soft for him.”

BETTING NEWS

Lynda Ramsden may be in her final season as a trainer, but she is certainly not going out without a final flourish and her horses have been in excellent form of late.

She may well add to her successes with Formal Decree in the opening Queen’s Own Yorkshire Dragoons Ladies’ Day Nursery. The colt has raced consistently this season, was far from lucky in running last time and has been backed from 7-1 to 6-1 with Paddy Power.

Powers have also had money for Spinning Queen in the Murphy’s Fastflow May Hill Stakes (2.45) and have trimmed her odds from 5-1 to 9-2, and in the GNER Yorkshire Cup (3.55) they have brought in Sergeant Cecil from 11-2 to 9-2.

Sergeant Cecil has already won two of the season’s top staying handicaps, the totesport Northumberland Plate at Newcastle and the totesport Ebor Handicap at York, and victory in the Cup today would complete a remarkable treble.

totesport have also had strong support for Sergeant Cecil and have brought him from 6-1 to 4-1, and they have also done business over Attune in the Japan Racing Association Kyoto Sceptre Stakes, bringing her in from 10-1 to 8-1.

GOING NEWS AT 10 AM

The going for the second day of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival is

GOOD TO FIRM, GOOD IN PLACES ON THE ROUND COURSE.

There are no more good places on the straight.

The track was not watered last night and it looks unlikely that there will be any watering this evening, as clerk of the course Jon Pullin explained.

“The forecast is for a dry day but rain by this evening, and a lot of the forecasts suggest that there could be some heavy bursts.

“We shall monitor the forecasts through the day and if it looks that there will be quite a lot of rain then we shall not water.”
