LADBROKES ST LEGER FESTIVAL 2005
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
DONCASTER, FIRST DAY, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7

CROWD UP

A crowd of 9,000 was seen today, the first day of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival, at Doncaster.

This is 500 up on the attendance last year and Steven Clarke, Doncaster’s general manager, said “we are very pleased as this is a good crowd for the first day and we are looking forward to the rest of the week.”

BETTING NEWS

Opinions are bound to take a wide range in a race as open as the totesport Portland Handicap (2.25), with bookmakers going as long as 7-1 the field, but two horses in particular have caught punters’ fancies.

These are Merlin’s Dancer, one of four runners in the race for Dandy Nicholls, and top-weight Baltic King. Merlin’s Dancer has been backed from 10-1 to 7-1 with totesport and from 8-1 from 9-1 with Coral, who have brought in Baltic King from 9-1 to 7-1 and have cut outsider Cafe Royal from 20-1 to 16-1.

totesport have taken the same move (9-1 to 7-1) with Baltic King and have cut Indian Trail, who beat today’s top-weight into second place when he won at Newmarket in April and is now 4lb worse off for a neck, from 7-1 to 6-1.

The opening EBF Carrie Red Nursery (1.15) is another very open affair, but Dasheena, who has a 7lb penalty for her win at Carlisle last time, has had support from 50-1 to 40-1 with Coral, and totesport have done business over Zafantage, whom they have cut from 14-1 to 10-1.

In the most important race of the day, the Group Two Park Hill Stakes (2.55), the likely favourite Kastoria, who represents owner the Aga Khan and trainer John Oxx, has been popular with totesport where she is in from 100-30 to 11-4, while Coral have trimmed the Yorkshire Oaks winner Punctilious from 5-1 to 9-2.

McKEOWN INJURED

Dean McKeown, who had a heavy fall when Alchemist Dancer came down in the seven furlong handicap at Catterick yesterday, will not ride today.

He had just the one booked ride, on Tom Tun in the totesport Portland Handicap (2.25), and will now be replaced by Jason Edmunds, who claims 3lb.

“Dean has no serious injuries but is just a bit bruised and battered,” said his agent Simon Dodds. “I expect we shall play it safe and make sure that he is 100% for Saturday when he has at least two very good rides -- on Tabaret in the Polypipe Flying Childers Stakes and Ouninpohja in the Trilogy Nightclub Doncaster Handicap.”

GOING NEWS AT 10AM

The going for the first day of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival is

GOOD TO FIRM, GOOD IN PLACES.

“We watered the course yesterday, putting 7 millIimetres on the entire track,” said clerk of the course Jon Pullin.

“Most of the good ground is on the round course and I anticipate that it may become good to firm there by the end of the day.

“We shall monitor things through the afternoon and make a decision at the end of the day about whether we should water overnight.

“The forecast today is for a dry day with temperatures in the low 20s, but there will probably be rain around on Friday, though it depends on which forecast you believe as to how much there will be.”

WINNING QUOTES RACE ONE
EBF CARRIE RED FILLIES’ NURSERY

VIOLETTE’S LATE SWOOP

Violette, owned and bred by Graham Rowles Nicholson at his Limestone Stud in Lincolnshire, produced a storming late dash to take the opening EBF Carrie Red Fillies’ Nursery by a length and a half from the always prominent Gallery Girl.

“I told Seb (Sanders) to be as brave as he dared to be and work his way over from stall 8 and wait for the gaps to come,” said the winning filly’s trainer Sir Mark Prescott.

“I worked her with some decent fillies over six and a half furlongs the other day and she went really well, so when I saw this race I thought it was well worth an shot,” the trainer went on.

“I know that when I ran her in a Group race (the Princess Margaret) I was well and truly put in my place, but I think that she has improved so much since then that she deserves another try, but at the moment I don’t know where that might be. If she were a colt I wouldn’t do it but because she is a home-bred filly it doesn’t matter if she is beaten again.

“I made an even slower start to the season than usual; for many weeks it was like watching paint dry during the day and then all peel off in the evening, so that I had to start all over again.”

“But then the two-year-olds came good in June and the older horses in July and since then they have all been going well,” he said.

Prescott also referred to the case at Newcastle on Monday over the running and riding of Secret Liaison when he was fined £2,000 and Jean-Pierre Guillambert suspended for 14 days.

“I am not going to appeal on my own, but if Jean-Pierre does then I shall certainly support him. I think he has been very harshly treated,” he said.

GOING AFTER THE FIRST RACE

Seb Sanders, rider of the winner Violette in the EBF Carrie Red Fillies Nursery, reported that it was “good fast ground”

Alan Munro said that it was “virtually good, just a touch slow”

David Allan described it as “slowish but with no jar”

While Richard Hughes thought the going “beautiful”

Hayley Turner said that it was “not bad, they are getting their toes in, good ground really”

But Kieren Fallon thought the going “soft”

WINNING QUOTES RACE TWO
£300,000 ST LEGER YEARLING STAKES

THE FISH SWIMS HOME

Johnny The Fish, named after his part-owner Johnny Ferrand, who put together the syndicate from The Pheasant Inn (between the M4 and Lambourn in Berkshire) who now own the horse, sprang a 20-1 surprise when he took the £300,000 St Leger Yearling Stakes by a neck and three-quarters of a length from Mr Sandicliffe (now five times second from five starts) and the German-trained Swing The Ring.

And never mind about there being some heavy heads at the Berkshire pub, there will be plenty of those in Yorkshire to judge by the post-race reactions of the syndicate members who made it to Town Moor.

“When Brian (Meehan, the winner’s trainer) and agent Johnny McKeever bought the horse for 26,000gns as a yearling, Brian told us to be patient and keep our nerve and he would win this race for us,” related Ferrand.

Johnny The Fish had taken a small step towards repaying his owners’ outlay when he won at Warwick in July, but this prize of £134,528 eclipsed that by a mile.

“We gelded him soon after we bought him,” related Meehan. “There was nothing to make him a stallion in his pedigree and it is often the best thing to do is to cut them.

“He used to wander about a bit in his races, but I am sure that was down to greenness and there is no vice in him. Jimmy (Fortune), who has ridden him all the time says that he has always been a very easy horse to ride.

“It is very bad luck on Jimmy that he could not ride the horse today, but he is not back from suspension until Friday. I managed to get a pretty decent replacement, though,” he added as he and Frankie Dettori congratulated each other in enthusiastic fashion.

MORE QUOTES

DETTORI WINS

Frankie Dettori partnered 20/1 shot Johnny The Fish to a neck victory in the £300,000 St Leger Yearling Stakes at Doncaster, Europe's richest juvenile contest.

The jockey was winning the race for the second time, having ridden Acclamation to success in 2001, while it was also a second victory for trainer Brian Meehan, who sent out Cape Fear to win in 2003.

Dettori commented: "It's a lottery race and I think I was lucky that the gaps came for me.

"Once I got the gaps, he was very brave. The pace really suited him - they went really fast early on and he likes to see horses coming back to him so it worked out very well."

The rider has just been booked to ride Scorpion, the ante-post favourite in Saturdays’s Ladbrokes St Leger.

Johnny Ferrand heads the winning syndicate of owners, the Second Pheasant Inn Partnership, which is named after a pub near Lambourn. Johnny The Fish is his nickname.

Ferrand commented: "Actually, I had a worse nickname than Johhny The Fish when I was younger but I can't say what it was!

"There are nine of us in the syndicate. We benefited from a very professional trainer and very professional jockey today."

"We may have some difficulty getting back to the Pheasant Inn tonight!"

WINNING QUOTES RACE THREE
totesport PORTLAND HANDICAP

OUT AFTER DARK MAY GO TO AYR

Following the success of one team of enhusiastic topers when Johnny The Fish and his team from the Pheasant Inn in Berkshire won the big sales race, there were more victory celebrations for owners who appear not to have taken the pledge when The Night Owls’ Out After Dark landed the totesport Portland Handicap, finishing too well for Peter Brueghel and Continent.

And in so doing they rather blew the theory that it is imperative to have a high draw to win on the straight course, as three of the first four had single figure draws and Out After Dark came out of stall 5.

“I could not understand why the runners in the sales race who were drawn low came over to the stands’ side, and I told Adam (Kirby, who rode the winner) that he was not to do that,” said the winner’s trainer Clive Cox.

Now the plan for the winner could well take in next week’s Ayr Gold Cup, for which Out After Dark picks up a 5lb penalty and for which VC Bet cut his odds from 20-1 to 12-1 and totesport reduced him from the same price to 10-1. Ladbrokes aso cut him to 10-1, in their case from 25-1.

“That is not a definite plan at the moment, but it is certainly a possibility and we shall go home and talk about it,” said the trainer.

Cox was full of praise not only for the horse, whom he called “a real superstar”, but also for Kirby, who has impressed many with his riding this season.

“He is a horseman as well as a jockey and for a lad who has only just turned 17 he is a wonderful rider. And he has a 5lb claim as well,” Cox enthused.

“He is still apprenticed to Michael Wigham, but I would absolutely love it if he could join me and I think that there is a very good chance that he will.”

WINNING QUOTES RACE FOUR
PARK HILL STAKES

MELBOURNE BECKONS

The Melbourne Cup, the race which brings Australia to a standstill every first Tuesday in November, is the big target for Sweet Stream after her defeat of Kastoria and Songerie in the Park Hill Stakes.

Mark Sulkes, who describes himself as “a very small part of the winning syndicate, Team Valor” explained that the mare ran here to assess her prospects of staying the two miles at Flemington. “This seemed an ideal race to test her stamina and she stayed the distance well,” he said.

Thierry Gillet, who rode Sweet Stream, said that there would be “no problem” about the mare staying two miles.

Whether Sweet Stream will race again between now and November is very much up in the air, but she has been entered for the Arc and there is a race in Italy which could come under consideration.

Another matter up in the air is whether Sweet Stream will get a penalty for Melbourne, for which she is quoted at 25-1 by Cashmans. Aussie commentator and journalist Jim (JA) McGrath reported that the rules have been changed this year so that the home handicapper can give discretionary penalties but he (McGrath) felt it unlikely that the winner would get anything to add to her 8st 4lb after winning a GroupTwo race confined to mares and fillies.

Sweet Stream, who has won at trips up to a mile and a half with her best win coming in the Prix Vermeille, and on ground varying from heavy to good to firm, was off the track for eight months between her run in Hong Kong when she was fourth to Phoenix Reach and her win at Deauville last month.

Georgina Hammond, whose husband John trains the mare and who rode winners here as an apprentice under her maiden name of Frost, explained that the mare had a very small fracture in a hock and they just wanted to give her plenty of time to recover from her Far Eastern exertions in view of her busy autumn campaign.

WINNING QUOTES RACE FIVE
PACK IT IN STAKES

TWO FROM TWO FOR THE CITY

City of Troy, who won on his debut at Newbury seven weeks ago, followed that up by taking The Pack It In Stakes, but only after quite a sharp battle with Art Deco.

In the process he impressed the layers with Ladbrokes putting him at 14-1 for the Guineas and 20-1 for the Derby. totesport offer 16-1 and 25-1 respectively for those two classics.

“The jockeys think that it rode like a good race,” said Jimmy Scott, travelling head lad to the winner’s trainer Sir Michael Stoute.

“We have always liked him and I have never known a colt with a temperament like his. All he wants to do is to eat and sleep and yawn, and just occasionally he wakes up.

“He got into all sorts of trouble before he won at Newbury and he did not have the best of runs there, though he won well. Kieren (Fallon) likes him very much.”

WINNING QUOTES RACE SIX
THWAITES SMOOTH BEER EBF MAIDEN STAKES

CRIMINAL ACT MAKES IT THIRD TIME LUCKY

Criminal Act, who had been placed in his two previous starts, opened his account when landing the odds in the Thwaites Smooth Beer EBF Maiden Stakes, but he had to work hard to get the better of long time leader Annabelle Ja and he did not wear her down until well inside the final furlong.

“He kept getting shuffled back but I always thought that he was going to get there,” said Barry Hills, who trains the winner for the Sangster family, also the breeders of the colt.

“I think the second is probably quite good and it may turn out to have been quite a decent race,”added Hills as he tried to persuade himself and others that this was a convincing display.

“He will probably have one more run and then be put away for the winter,” Hills went on. “He is not in any of the big autumn races and the Horris Hill could be the right one for him.”

WINNING QUOTES RACE SEVEN
THOROUGHBRED BREEDERS’ ASSOCIATION CLASSIFIED STAKES

BACK FROM DEATH’S DOOR

Miss Provvidence, who nearly died on the operating table last year, rewarded the patience of her owners, the Double V Partnership, when she got up on the line to snatch the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Classified Stakes from The Queen’s The Coires.

“She was one of our best two-year-olds last year,” related her trainer Walter Swinburn, now on 33 of an excellent first season, “but then she developed an abcess in her throat and nearly died on the operating table.

“It was very much touch and go for a few days, and what made it all the worse was that most of the syndicate were involved for the first time. Luckily my father-in-law (former trainer Peter Harris), who is very good at these things, had talked to them all when they joined the syndicate and explained about the highs and lows that racing involves.

“The filly has improved each time she has run this year and she will not only race again this season, but also stay in training as a four-year-old.

“She is thriving on her racing and we fancied her a lot today. She would have been a very unlucky loser and she kept getting stopped so often that I stopped looking at the race.

“I think that she will stay a mile and a half if we decide to go that far with her, but I am very happy with what she is doing over a mile and a quarter.”

25 FOR QUEEN ELIZABETH II STAKES (sponsored by Barclays Bank Plc) - plus details of the forfeits for six other Group races at Newmarket's record-breaking autumn

The build-up to the record-breaking autumn on Newmarket's Rowley Mile, which will see 18 Group Races, including seven Group Ones, run during a period of just 22 days, continues today with details of the latest acceptors for seven of the Group races - four from the transferred Ascot meeting and three from the totesport Cambridgeshire meeting.

25 FOR QUEEN ELIZABETH II STAKES (sponsored by Barclays Bank Plc)

A total of 25 horses go forward for the £200,000 Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (sponsored by Barclays Bank Plc), the highlight of the programme on Saturday, September 24.

Last year's brilliant winner Rakti is among the acceptors but is likely to face some stiff opposition as he bids to hold on to his crown with the likes of Godolphin's Dubawi, triumphant in the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville last time, Sussex Stakes hero Proclamation, and Maids Causeway, the courageous scorer in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot at York, also still engaged.

Further interest comes in the form of Aidan O'Brien Oratorio, not seen out since his defeat of Motivator in the Eclipse, and ex-Australian performer Starcraft, who showed his true colours for Luca Cumani when landing the Group One Prix du Moulin at Longchamp on September 4.

Several leading fillies also go forward including Attraction, recent Celebration Mile scorer Chic and Virginia Waters, heroine of the UltimatePoker.com 1000 Guineas.

32 GO FORWARD FOR MEON VALLEY STUD FILLIES' MILE

The other Group One race from the transferred Ascot meeting is the £175,000 Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile, also run on Saturday, September 24, for which 32 of the best staying juvenile miles go forward following the latest confirmation stage.

Aidan O'Brien is well-represented with four entries including recent Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes victor Rumplestiltskin and impressive Tralee maiden winner Alexandrova while Chenchikova, an unraced half-sister to the 2002 Derby winner High Chaparral, could prove to be an interesting contender.

Owners the Sangster family and trainer John Gosden were successful in the 2004 renewal of this race with Playful Act and could be represented this time around by Pure Illusion, an impressive maiden winner on the July Course last month.

Another filly who caught the eye when taking her maiden by six lengths at Newmarket on August 26 was Short Skirt, trained by Sir Michael Stoute.

25 IN totesport.com ROYAL LODGE STAKES

The main juvenile contest for colts from the transferred Ascot meeting is the £70,000 Group Two totesport.com Royal Lodge Stakes, for which 50 acceptors go forward.

Aidan O'Brien still has a dozen to choose from for the mile contest, run on Sunday, September 25, including Horatio Nelson, unbeaten in three starts including the Group Three Weatherbys Superlative Stakes at the July Meeting as well as the Group Two Futurity Stakes at the Curragh and Ivan Denisovich, successful in the Group Two TNT July Stakes at Newmarket.

Leading the home-trained challenge is Marcus Tregoning's Sir Percy, who is unbeaten in three starts including the Group Two Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on his latest start while another interesting contender is Primary, who has won both his starts and could provide David Loder with final big-race success before his retirement from training.

totepool DIADEM STAKES HAS 31 ACCEPTORS

The big sprint at the transferred Ascot meeting is the £80,000 Group Two GNER Diadem Stakes, run over six furlongs on Sunday, September 25.

Included among the 31 acceptors is Iffraaj, the impressive winner of the Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot at York but not seen out since running disappointingly in the Darley July Cup.

Of the others that ran in the Darley July Cup, Etlaala (3rd), Soldiers Tale (4th), Balmont (5th) and Ashdown Express (6th) could all reoppose one another.

Other leading contenders include La Cucaracha, heroine of the Group One Nunthorpe Stakes at York last month and runner-up to Goodricke in the William Hill Sprint Cup at Haydock, where Fayr Jag showed a return to form in finishing fifth.

French-based Englishman John Hammond is always to be respected when he sends over a runner to Britain and he could run Ratio, who dead-heated with Fayr Jag in the 2003 Wokingham at Royal Ascot.

FLASHY WINGS HEADS 30 IN SKY BET CHEVELEY PARK STAKES

Mick Channon's Flashy Wings, undefeated in her four outings to date, heads the 30 acceptors for the £170,000 Group One Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes, run over six furlongs at Newmarket on Thursday, September 29, the opening day of the totesport Cambridgeshire meeting.

The Zafonic filly could not have been more impressive on her last two starts in the Group Two Queen Mary Stakes and the Group Two Lowther Stakes and heads straight for the Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes having bypassed the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh last Sunday. The Curragh race was won by Aidan O'Brien's Rumplestiltskin, who is also among the acceptors.

Mick Channon could also run Silca's Sister. The daughter of Inchinor is already a Group One winner, having taken on the colts and claimed the notable scalp of Ivan Denisovich in the Prix Morny at Deauville on August 21.

Donna Blini was last seen out when taking the Group Two Chippenham Lodge Cherry Hinton Stakes at the July Meeting where Salut d'Amour was possibly a unlucky in finishing second and the duo could meet again in this contest.

GEORGE WASHINGTON AMONG 30 ACCEPTORS FOR SHADWELL STUD MIDDLE PARK STAKES

George Washington, the ante-post favourite for the 2006 UltimatePoker.com 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, is one of 26 acceptors for the £170,000 Group One Shadwell Stud Middle Stakes, the highlight of the second day of the totesport Cambridgeshire meeting on Friday, September 30.

After finishing third on his debut at Newmarket back in May, George Washington has won all of his three subsequent starts, including the Group One Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh last month, when he was successful by eight lengths. His trainer Aidan O'Brien has six others going forward, including Horatio Nelson and Ivan Denisovich.

Red Clubs has claimed one of the season's best juvenile contests with landing the Group Two Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot at York although he had to settle for second place in the Group Two Gimcrack Stakes at York, when finding Amadeus Wolf, also an acceptor in this contest, too strong.

ATTRACTION AND CHIC ON COURSE FOR RE-MATCH IN KINGDOM OF BAHRAIN SUN CHARIOT STAKES

Last year was the first time that the £200,000 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes was run as a Group One contest and produced a thrilling finish with Attraction just prevailing by a neck from Chic.

Both fillies are still engaged for this year's renewal, run on totesport Cambridgeshire day, Saturday, October 1, with Chic having recently landed her second Celebration Mile at Goodwood and Attraction due to run in the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on Saturday.

With the likes of Irish contender Alexander Goldrun, a Group One winner in four different countries, multiple Group One scorer Soviet Song and the UltimatePoker.com 1000 Guineas heroine Virginia Water also engaged, the Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes will certainly live up to its Group One status.
