GOING UPDATE
Michael Prosser, Clerk of the Course at Newmarket, reports: “We will leave the going at Good to Soft overnight - today’s times have not been far off standard.
“We are expecting rain overnight and then we will reassess the going in the morning.”
HILLS CAMP HAPPY WITH MAIDS
Maids Causeway is in fine fettle prior to her tilt at the Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket tomorrow.
The Giants Causeway filly was discovered to be injured after her successful bid for glory in the Coronation Stakes at York in June.
She underwent a period of box rest before making her first public appearance since her setback when enjoying a racecourse gallop at Newmarket on September 20.
Charlie Hills, assistant to his father Barry, said: “She came out of the gallop really well and we we were pleased with that.
“She’s done a couple of bits of work since then and she’s come on every time.”
With six millimetres of rain having fallen on Thursday night, the ground at Newmarket has gone to good, good to soft in places. But ease in the surface holds no fears for the Hills’ camp ahead of the Group 1 for fillies.
Hills said: “If you look at her form, she won the Rockfel on soft ground, so it won’t make any difference to her.”
Clarifying the details of her injury, Hills added: “She had a hairline fracture of a cannonbone and also pulled a muscle in her hind quarters.
“She had box rest and if anything did really well for it.”
Ralph Beckett, trainer of Penkenna Princess, is another who won’t mind rain-softened ground.
There was plenty of give underfoot when she raced to Group 3 success in the Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury back in April.
Now she is to be brought back in trip after appearing not to stay in the Nassau Stakes last time.
Beckett said: “She’s very well. Every drop of rain will suit. The combination of coming back to a mile and the rain means she will have no excuses.”
BLUE MONDAY HAS
HAD A GOOD PREP - CHARLTON
Roger Charlton is anticipating a bold bid for totesport Cambridgeshire glory from his charge Blue Monday at Newmarket tomorrow.
The four-year-old has not been out of the four on his four starts in 2005 and last time only went down by a short head in a valuable10-furlong handicap at Newbury.
That effort was just a fortnight ago but Beckhampton handler Charlton was today in positive mood ahead of the Ł130,000 handicap at racing’s HQ.
He said: “Blue Monday has had a good preparation. He has come out of his last race at Newbury in good form. I expect him to run a big race tomorrow.”
Asked whether soft ground might inconvenience Blue Monday - as low as 7-1 in the betting - Charlton replied: “Possibly, in that it’s an unknown dimension. He’s never run on slow ground.”
POSSIBLE totesport CAMBRIDGESHIRE LADMARKS
If last year’s winner Spanish Don prevails in tomorrow’s totesport Cambridgeshire, he will become the seventh dual scorer of this prestigious and very valuable handicap. He would join the illustrious list of Hackler’s Pride (1903 & 1904), Christmas Daisy (1909 & 1910), Sterope (1948 & 1949), Prince De Galles (1969 & 1970), Baronet (1978 & 1980) and Rambo’s Hall (1989 & 1992).
If the Brian Ellison-trained Ashkal Way maintains his current favouritism and wins tomorrow under Kieren Fallon, he will be the eighth favourite to have been triumphant since the war, the last being Pasternak, trained by Sir Mark Prescott, in 1997, who started at 4/1 and landed a huge gamble.
Sir Mark would join Jeremy Glover as the most successful current trainer if he can saddle Pedrillo to win tomorrow. In addition to Pasternak, the master of Heath House has struck with Quinlan Terry in 1988 and Chivalry two years ago. Glover’s magnificent quartet came courtesy of Balthus in 1987, Rambo’s Hall 1989 & 1992, and Clifton Fox in 1996, but he is not represented this year.
Should top-weight Momtic, trained by William Jarvis, manage to shoulder 9st 10lb to victory, it will be the the joint highest weight carried in the post-war period, joining the Roger Charlton-trained Cap Juluca who defied the same burden in 1995.
POSSIBLE £250,000 UP FOR GRABS
The mystery female totescoop6 punter failed to land the bonus fund last week after her selection, Pivotal Princess, could only manage third in the Betfredpoker.com Handicap.
However, she still walked away with £100,861, the biggest win fund victory for a female in the bets history.
Her failure to collect the bonus means that a very lucrative £148,524 starts in the win fund this week.
Added to the fact that there were also no winner of the win fund last week and £46,596 is carried over, a single winner could be expected to collect close to £300,000.
Races this weekend are divided between Redcar and Newmarket and include the challenging totesport Cambridgeshire Handicap.
Paul Petrie commented: “Pivotal Princess would have won the Nottingham punter a King’s Ransom but it wasn't to be and the bonus fund continues to elude the chasers. That is good news for totescoop6 players this weekend as they go on the search for a £250,000 bounty.”

FOCUS GROUP GIVES CECIL SUCCESS
Henry Cecil received a big cheer as he collected the trainer’s prize after his charge Focus Group was something of a surprise winner of the opener.
The four-year-old gelding of Khalid Abdulla’s had been off the track for 393 days ahead of what was only his second start and remains unbeaten.
But he proved street-wise enough under Jimmy Quinn to emerge victorious from a thrilling scrap with Notnowcato and score by a neck.
The 16-1 win was something of a surprise to Cecil, who said: “I said to people at lunch, ‘He hasn’t been very sound and has had trouble in the stalls...we are just trying to get him out’.
“They asked, ‘Will he win?’ I said, ‘No’. And as I left to come down here, I said, ‘Told you so...you just weren’t listening!’.
“He’s in the Sales, so we will see what the Prince wants to do.”
Cecil was also asked if he had much more to run this season and he replied: “Just a few, but I haven’t very many, anyway, to run. We are a bit thin on the ground.
“But we will try and win a race or two more.”
RACE 1 WOODFORD RESERVE HANDICAP
NOTNOWCATO GOES DOWN FIGHTING
Sir Michael Stoute hinted that his Notnowcato has more potential than winner Focus Group, who was receiving 8lb from his charge, after going down by a neck in the Woodford Reserve Handicap.
He said: “The winner was too good for us at the weights.”
“That was good, wasn’t it?” he also opined to connections.
Asked if Chic would run well in tomorrow’s Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes, Stoute replied: “I hope so - all my fillies for the race are in good shape. It was a good run last time in Ireland and she will like the cut in the ground.
“She won’t race again next season - she’s a five-year-old now so this is a last shot.”
Gay Kelleway, trainer of third-placed Boundless Prospect, a further two and a half lengths away, commented: “He’s run a cracker on ground that he doesn’t like.
“Michael [Fenton, jockey] was drawn on the far side and switched over to the stands’ side where we thought the better ground was. He stayed on well and if it had been fast ground he would have won.
“At the end of the month, he is off to the Newmarket Sales and this will be his last run before then as he needs good ground. He’s run a good race for each-way backers.”
GOING CHANGE AFTER THE FIRST
The clerk of the course, having consulted the first four jockeys home, changed the going after the first race to Good to Soft.
The consensus among the rest of the jockeys in the first was that the ground was soft, though Pat Fitzsimons thought the ground was genarally “good but soft in the dip”.
Munsef bounced back from a 105 day layoff after winning at Royal Ascot at York to claim the Fishpools Furnishings Godolphin Stakes by one and a quarter lengths from Defining, whom he passed well inside the final furlong.
Trainer John Dunlop was rather surprised by the victory of the 8/1 chance.
He said: “I didn’t think he would run that well as I thought he might lack a bit of fitness. At York on that suspect ground, he got a bit jarred up and was sore hence the layoff.
“I am delighted by that and he is very lightly raced. He won his maiden in the spring and then we waited for the King George V Handicap at York.
“He will go up in the handicap again now and that was a very good performance and he must improve for that. He is getting a smart horse over a mile and a half and he loved the ground today.
“I wanted to run Mostaqeleh in tomorrow’s Finnforest Oh So Sharp Stakes but I am concerned with the ground. We could have some more rain but we’ll run if possible.
“Millenary worked this morning and he can’t wait for the Jockey Club Cup here in two weeks’ time [Saturday, October 15 on Champions’ Day].”
RACE 2 The Fishpools Furnishings Godolphin Stakes
PLACE QUOTES.
FANSHAWE HAPPY WITH PLACED DUO
James Fanshawe went close with both of his runners as Defining took second and Australie third behind Munsef.
The Newmarket-based trainer said: “It was a bit of a muddly race. We were frightened about there being a lack of pace for Defining and I didn’t really know much about Australie (who was having her first run joining Fanshawe).
“But I am delighted with her, she’s run a good race. She’s got to have soft ground and we might go for the St Simon with her - something like that. The most important thing with her is getting cut in the ground.
“I haven’t had her that long. David Loder had her but she was trained in France last year.
“As for Defining, it was a pity there wasn’t something to take him there a bit further. But the winner is a good horse.”
RACE 3 The Rolls Royce Motor Cars London Joel Stakes
WIN QUOTES.
ROB ROY BACK TO WINNING FORM
Rob Roy returned to top form to beat Ancient World by three-quarters of a length and land odds of 17/2 in the Group Three Rolls Royce Motor Cars London Joel Stakes.
The three-year-old Lear Fan colt reappeared 21 days earlier at Doncaster after a lengthy lay-off following the 2,000 Guineas here in early May.
He was third of seven at Doncaster but improved on that display to score for the first time since breaking his maiden tag last autumn at Newmarket.
Trainer Sir Michael Stoute said: “That was very pleasing. We had to pinfire his shins after the Guineas - he was actually pretty lame.
“He travelled really well at Doncaster and I don’t think he liked the ground and the conditions probably just found him out, obviously having been off so long.
“Today he was just a little rusty for a while and then Mick (Kinane) got hold of him and he was really gping away at the end.
“I would think next year he will be better at a mile and a quarter. I would like to turn him out now.”
Sir Michael will be hoping for further succes in the Group One Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes tomorrow when he saddles Choc, Peeress and Favourable Terms.
Assessing their chances, Stoute said: “Chic seems in good form and she’ll like the ground. The other two fillies are in good shape as well, so let’s hope one of them wins.”
RACE 3 GROUP 3 ROLLS-ROYCE MOTOR CARS LONDON JOEL STAKES
PLACED STAKES
ANCIENT WORLD SECOND
Godolphin’s Ancient World stayed on well in the closing stages of the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars London Joel Stakes but he could not quite get to Rob Roy who denied his rival by three-quarters of a length with the same again back to third-placed Polar Ben.
Saeed bin Suroor, Ancient World’s trainer, said: “He ran well and we are happy. He finished his race well.
“He is tough, tried hard and gave his best. We are not blaming him and we will find another race for him this season.”
Ancient World sustained an injury in the race.
“He has a small cut on his hind leg and we hope that it isn’t serious - we’ll get him back to the stable and check it further,” he added.
James Fanshawe, trainer of Polar Ben, said: “He ran jolly well.”
RACE 4 GROUP 1 SHADWELL STUD MIDDLE PARK STAKES
AMADEUS WOLF GETS A FINE TUNE
Kevin Ryan gained his first Group 1 victory when Amadeus Wolf was too powerful for his five rivals in the Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes.
He said: “That was great and it was great for this horse. We have always thought a lot of him. I am proud of the horse and he is very easy to deal with.
“He gives a 110% and travelled well and picked up great after they went a good gallop. I never thought that the winning line was going to come!
“He’s stronger now and improved for his break after York, coming back well.
“We will have to give the Stan James 2000 Guineas a go and he won’t run again this year - if he doesn’t stay, he doesn’t stay.
“He is learning how to race properly and he’s more relaxed - you can put him anywhere in a race now. In his first two races he was trying to do everything too quickly.
“I have never had a Classic runner before - this is my best season and to get a horse like this is unbelievable. He came highly recommended to me.
“My best previous performance in a Group 1 race was Eastern Purple, who was fourth in the Prix de l’Abbaye.”
William Hill rate the juvenile a 33/1 chance (from 40/1) for the Stan James 2000 Guineas, while Paddy Power go 25/1 (from 50/1) and totesport 20/1 (from 33/1).
The winner was also jockey Neil Callan’s first Group 1 winner. He told connections: “He was so relaxed and when I asked him to quicken, he did and he did it real good.”
MORE QUOTES SHADWELL STUD MIDDLE PARK STAKES
PROPER HORSE
Neil Callan, enjoying his first Group One victory, said: “Amadeus Wolf is a proper horse. I think he has the ability and the scope for improvement to go a mile - I think he is definitely a Guineas contender now.
“I was never worried about ground or anything like that. I won on him on soft gluey ground at Ayr and he went through it powerfully, although he did not beat very much in that maiden first time out.
“They went a nice even pace and I knew my fellow, who relaxes so well, would go when I asked him.”
RACE 4 The Group One Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes
PLACE QUOTES.
DEWHURST A POSSIBLE FOR BEATEN DUO
Shadwell Stud Middle Park second Red Clubs and the third-placed Always Hopeful may tackle the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes back here at Newmarket in 15 day’s time, according to their respective trainers.
Barry Hills, who saddled Red Clubs, said: “He’s run a very good race. It’s no good making excuses after the race, but he’s a horse that needs ground with a bit more life in it.
“He’s a good horse. If he runs again (this year) it will be in the Dewhurst, otherwise that will be it.”
Eoghan O’Neill, trainer of third-placed Always Hopeful, said: ”He’s run a super race. Ivan Denisovich was fourth, so we’ve turned it around on him from France (where Always Hopeful was third in the Prix Morny while Ivan Denisovich was second in that Group 1 at Deauville).
“I’m really pleased. The ground was fine - any ground will do him, so no excuses. I’m very happy with him.
“We might run him in the Dewhurst. We’ll see who is going to show up there. He’s had a long season, so we might call it a day. Really, today was the day.”
RACE 5 The Hungry Horse E.B.F Maiden Stakes
WIN QUOTES.
ARM CANDY SERVES UP 50-1 STUNNER
James Toller sent out Arm Candy to pull off a 50/1 shock with the Nashwan filly streaking to a three-length victory in the hands of Kevin Darley.
She was out in front to be shot at throughout but kept finding more to lose her maiden tag at the second time of asking following a sixth-placed effort at Yarmouth two weeks ago.
Newmarket-based Toller said: “We liked her but I didn’t think she’d be up to this sort of level.
“I was hoping she’d run well, but I wasn’t expecting that. I kept watching her, waiting for them to get to her. I’ll enjoy watching the re-run!
“I always thought she was still a bit weak and she would be better next year.
“Our jockey advises putting her away and I would think that’s probably what we’ll do.
“We’ll just wait and see how she comes out of it. But she’ll be something to look forward to, anyway.”
PAUL HANAGAN
Paul Hanagan, who was unseated from Maximix in the parade ring before the fifth race today, has been taken to hospital for x-rays on his collarbone. He broke the same collarbone six weeks ago and when taken through to the doctor said that it was very sore.
RACE 5 HUNGRY HORSE EBF MAIDEN STAKES
PLACED QUOTES
SECOND AND THIRD FOR HAMDAN
Hamdan Al Maktoum’s Alhaitham and Multakka finished second and third to Arm Candy in the Hungry Horse EBF Maiden Stakes.
Ironically the winner is a daughter of the late Nashwan, the owner’s great stallion who used to stand for Shadwell, the sponsor of Newmarket’s feature race today, at his Nunnery Stud.
Angus Gold, Hamdan Al Maktoum’s racing manager, said: “I am very pleased with that.
“Richard Hills [jockey] loves the second horse and said that he has a lovely attitude. He would probably prefer top of the ground but he will be a lovely horse for next year.
“Exactly the same for the third - Martin Dwyer [jockey] said that he is a bit immature but again, he will be a lovely horse for next year which he is bred to be.”
Pango continued his consistent season by winning the newmarketexperience.co.uk by a neck from Compton’s Eleven. Immediately afterwards a steward’s enquiry was announced but the result was allowed to stand.
Before he was allowed to keep the race, winning jockey Travis Block said: “I don’t think there are any problems. He must have enjoyed the softer ground because he has won and he battled on gamely.”
Winning owner and breeder Tim Billington commented: “He is very consistent and he’s only been out of the first three once this season.
“He ran perfectly straight and I suppose the enquiry is about my jockey’s whip as he goes past the second. There was no way that he was going to come back at us.”
RACE 7 REG DAY MEMORIAL HANDICAP STAKES
PLACED QUOTES
EBTIKAAR GOOD EFFORT
John Dunlop was far from disappointed with the effort of third-placed Ebtikaar in the concluding Reg Day Memorial Handicap.
He said: “He ran well and he likes coming from behind. I thought that he was coming to win and just didn’t get home.
“He ran a good race and I would think that he’ll run again this season as he doesn’t seem to mind this easy ground and he hasn’t had much racing this year.”
RACE 6 The newmarketexperience.co.uk Handicap
PLACE QUOTES.
COMPTON’S ELEVEN CLOSE AGAIN
Compton’s Eleven recorded the ninth second-place finish of his career but connections were nevertheless satisfied with his latest runner-up effort.
Lesley White, travelling head groom to trainer Mick Channon, said: “He doesn’t know how to run a bad race.
“He’s done nothing wrong, he handled the ground and there are no excuses.”
Roger Ingram, trainer of the third-placed Sky Crusader, said: “He ran a super race. If the ground had been firmer he would have very nearly won. He likes fast ground.
“If the ground dries out we may run him once more this season - otherwise we will prepare him to run in Dubai (next spring at the International Racing Carnival).”
RACE 7 The newmarketexperience.co.uk Handicap
WIN QUOTES.
SOULACROIX BREAKS SEASONAL DUCK
Soulacroix emerged best from a protracted duel with Nawamees to secure his first victory of the campaign.
The underfoot conditions and the mile-and-a-half distance were perfect for the four-year-old gelding, who had twice raced over considerably further in the summer.
Successful owner Gary Stevens said: “We’ve found the key to him - he doesn’t like being crowded in.
“If you pull him out and give him a bit of space, he’s off.
“Dropping him back in trip has definitely helped.
“He’s actually entered for the Sales at Newmarket. I love this horse and bought him as a yearling - it will be hard to part with him.”
As to immediate plans, Mark Perrett, assistant trainer to his wife Amanda, said: “We will see what races there are for him. If there’s the right race, we’ll run again.”
“Today it was the right trip on this ground. He ran well at Newbury the other day and hopefully he’s come back to his best.”
GALLOPS INJURY RULES OUT MUNRO TODAY
Jockey Alan Munro was kicked this morning on the gallops and will miss his three rides today.
Munro was riding out for Newmarket-based trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam when the incident occurred.
He was taken to hospital as a precaution but wasn’t there long and, according to his agent Jonathan Ramsden, the plan is to return to action tomorrow (Sat).
Munro will be replaced by Mick Kinane on Chapple-Hyam’s charge, River Bravo in the Hungry Horse E.B.F Maiden Stakes.
Munro was also due ro ride Audience In the opening Woodford Reserve Handicap Stakes and Capricho in race six, the newmarketexperience.co.uk. Handicap.
GOING CHANGES
Michael Prosser, Clerk of the Course at Newmarket, reports today’s ground as having changed to: “Good, Good to Soft in Places,” after the racecourse had six millimetres of rainfall overnight.
Yesterday’s going was “Good.”
“We are forecast to be overcast today and likely to stay dry until mid-afternoon and then experience three to four millimetres between then and midnight,” he continued.
“The forecast is for it to be dry tomorrow morning with plenty of sunshine with possible isolated showers in the afternoon.”

WORLD́S BIGGEST COFFEE MORNING COMES TO NEWMARKET!
In conjunction with Macmillan Cancer Relief, Newmarket's Rowley Mile Racecourse is joining in on the World's Biggest Coffee Morning fund raising event today Friday, September 30, the second day of the Cambridgeshire Meeting, which features the Group One Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes.
The fundraising event will takes place all day in the Limekilns Suite on the third floor of the Millennium Stand and will be accessible to all Members' Enclosure racegoers. Coffee, tea and cake will be available throughout the day with the proceeds going to Macmillan Cancer Relief.
On sale in the Limekilns Suite and in the Grandstand and Paddock area will be the "Food Glorious Food" cookbook, which has been compiled for Macmillan by their President, the Countess of Halifax. It contains over 100 recipes supplied by supporters of Macmillan Cancer Relief, including personalities from the world of racing like Frankie Dettori, Jacko Fanshawe (wife of Newmarket trainer, James Fanshawe), Lady Vestey and Lord Fairhaven, and celebrities and royalty including HRH The Prince of Wales, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, Vinnie Jones and Jilly Cooper. Donations of £5 or more are requested for a copy of the book.
"We are absolutely delighted that racegoers at Newmarket will be getting together for a coffee to join in our record breaking event," said Steve Richards, Regional Director for Macmillan Cancer Relief who was himself a Macmillan Nurse and cared for trainer Jeremy Tree who died of cancer. "Macmillan already helps thousands of people living with cancer, but the need for our services just keeps on growing. The money raised at this event in Newmarket will help us expand our services and so improve the lives of people affected by cancer."
Lisa Hancock, Newmarket's Managing Director, commented: "Macmillan provides a vital service for those affected by cancer in the UK and I hope that all Members' Enclosure racegoers here on Friday will support the event in the Limekilns Suite. The cookbook has some fantastic recipes, including Frankie Dettori's 'Tuna Al Mediterrano', and is well worth buying."
This is the 15th anniversary of Macmillan's World's Biggest Coffee Morning, which is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as officially the world's largest simultaneous coffee morning, but the first time that the Rowley Mile has been involved. Last year over 1.5m people raised their mugs for Macmillan, enough coffee to fill two large swimming pools and a whole factory of biscuits!
The money raised will help Macmillan change the lives of people living with cancer in the UK. £115 could fund a Macmillan nurse for one day to offer emotional and practical support for cancer patients and their families. £100 could help provide someone undergoing cancer treatment, who is too ill to work, with a Macmillan grant for extra heating this winter. £30 could help run the Macmillan CancerLine which provides vital information and help for people with cancer and their families for one hour.
