CAMBRIDGESHIRE MEETING 2005
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
NEWMARKET, FIRST DAY, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29
ATTENDANCE UP 8.5%
Today's attendance: 8,516
Last year: 7,845
Lisa Hancock, Managing Director of Newmarket Racecourses, commented: "It's been a very good crowd and I'm obviously really pleased. It augurs very well for the next two days and I have no doubt we'll have a big crowd and a great atmosphere here for totesport Cambridgeshire Day on Saturday.
"There has been a strong Greene King customer presence here today. It's the twelfth year of Greene King's "Sport of Kings" promotion at the Cambridgeshire Meeting and we are very grateful for their continued involvement. I know they will be bringing a lot of people tomorrow and Saturday as well."
GOING AND FORECAST
Michael Prosser, Clerk of the Course at Newmarket, reports: “I am leaving the ground at Good for now. The forecast is for rain tonight with 6 millimetres coming in before midnight.
“Tomorrow we should have a dry morning with the possibility of showers, possibly 1-2 millimetres, in the afternoon.
“We have lovely ground at the moment and the nice, strong tailwind has dried the ground out slowly today.
“We should be in a good position to take the forecast 6 millimetres and I am hopeful of good ground tomorrow, albeit on the slow side.
“The current forecast is also for 3-4 millimetres for Friday night, and there could also be showers on Saturday.
“The ground on Saturday is likely to be on the slow side if the forecast is accurate. We are looking at nearly half an inch of rain in 48 hours, and, despite the strong winds which are likely to continue, as we have been racing, the rain gets into the ground a little bit more.”
RYAN ‘CONFIDENT’ AHEAD OF GROUP 1 SHOT
Kevin Ryan has delivered an upbeat bulletin ahead of Gimcrack hero Amadeus Wolf’s crack at the Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes tomorrow.
The Mozart colt powered to glory at York last month when taking the Group 2 by a length-and-a-half from Red Clubs, who reopposes on 5lb better terms at Newmarket.
Ryan’s charge steps up into Group 1 company for the first time for this latest engagement but the Hambleton handler is expecting another top-notch performance.
He said: “My horse is in great order. He’s had a good preparation, he looks great and has been working really well. So I’m really happy with him. I’m confident he’s going to run a big race.
“We don’t want any more rain - I hope the ground doesn’t go on the soft side.”
Newark-based trainer Eoghan O’Neill is similarly positive about the chances of Always Hopeful.
The son of Mind Games was third in Deauville on his last start in the Group 1 Prix Morny, following up Group 2 joy in the Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.
O’Neill said: “He’s been fine since France where he wasn’t in love with the ground. He’s working well and I couldn’t be happier with him.
“It’s a Group 1 and they don’t come easy but we are having a go and are entitled to be there.”
Aidan O’Brien will be double-handed as he bids to land his fourth Middle Park Stakes in six renewals. Minardi and Johannesburg scored for him in 2000 and 2001, while Ad Valorem was on the mark for the Ballydoyle operation 12 months ago.
Tomorrow O’Brien will saddle Art Museum - unbeaten in two starts - and the TNT July Stakes winner Ivan Denisovich.
Prince Of Light is targeting a four-timer after completing his hat-trick at the start of September on the July Course where he won the Group 3 32Red.comSirenia Stakes. The other three runners in the nine-strong field are Guest Connections, Classic Encounter - third in the Norfolk Stakes last time out - and the once-raced maiden Johnny Alpha.
TEN GO FOR SUN CHARIOT
NEWMARKET is all set for a top-class renewal of the Group 1 Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes on Saturday when 10 runners will line up.
Locally-based trainer Sir Michael Stoute will be vying to win the race for the third time and he’ll send out Chic, Favourable Terms and Peeress.
The first-named of the trio has been in great form over the past five weeks, winning the Group 2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood and then only finding Attraction too good in the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on September 10.
Sir Michael’s second runner - 2004 Nassau Stakes heroine Favourable Terms - proved that she retains all of her ability when winning the Sceptre Stakes at Doncaster on her belated seasonal reappearance earlier in September.
Peeress has not been seen out since coming a good third in the Group 1 UAE Equestrian & Racing Federation Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket’s July Course on July 5. She had previously won the Group 2 Windsor Forest Stakes at Royal Ascot at York.
Maids Causeway makes her much-anticipated comeback after she was found to be injured following her thrilling Coronation Stakes’ victory at Royal Ascot at York in mid-June.
The Barry Hills-trained filly showed her well-being when enjoying a racecourse gallop with stable-mate Whazzat during Newmarket’s two-year-old meeting on September 20.
Newmarket trainer James Fanshawe will be represented by the progressive four-year-old Musicanna. She registered her fourth straight win when taking the Listed Atalanta Stakes at Sandown but this will be a step up again for her.
Virginia Waters is poised to revisit the site of her most glorious moment to date. The Kingmambo filly scorched to glory in the 1,000 Guineas on the Rowley Mile back in early May. She hasn’t scored since racing to Classic joy but her recent third behind Attraction in the Matron Stakes was an encouraging effort.
Penkenna Princess goes for the in-form Ralph Beckett team, while the one continental raider is Shapira from German handler Andreas Lowe’s yard, second to Divine Proportions last time out.
The field is completed by Attune - winless so far this term - and Summitville, who regained the winning thread when taking a Bath Listed contest in August, her first victory since clinching the May Hill as juvenile.
ART EYES smashed the track record at Newmarket for a mile-and-three-quarters when storming to a five-length success from Centaurus.
The three-year-oldHalling filly was returning to the Rowley Mile track just five days after finishing fourth to Ouija Board in the Group Three Princess Royal John Doyle Stakes.
But she clearly took that race very well, showing up prominently from the outset today before galloping clear in the final two furlongs to get home in a time of 2min.51.59 seconds, almost three seconds quicker than the previous best of 2min 54.3 secs which was established in 1999..
The successful trainer David Elsworth said of his 8-1 winner: “It was her day today and it’s very nice to see her win.
“She stays very well and is out of a Sadler’s Wells’ mare. She seems to have bottomless stamina.
“She’s a very tough filly. She got back from her race last Saturday and on Sunday morning she was kicking her door down for her food.
“She’s a filly who has progressed. Her value has increased and I think she is a filly who will stay in training next year because she keeps improving.
“The plan is to keep winning with her!”

CENTAURUS GOES DOWN FIGHTING
“Centaurus tries but he was beaten by a better horse,” explained Saeed bin Suroor after Godolphin’s three-year-old found just Art Eyes five lengths too powerful in today’s opening Unicoin Homes Noel Murless Stakes.
The trainer added: “I think that he will be a better horse next year and we are not blaming him at this time. We will take him home and keep our options open as to whether he will run again this season.”
Centaurus’s rider Frankie Dettori was certainly not doubting his charge’s resolution either. He told connections: “He tries until he’s dead.”
John Dunlop, trainer of third-placed Tawqeet, a further four lengths adrift, said: “I am a bit disappointed with him but they went very fast. Richard [Hills, jockey] was not necessarily riding him to beat Avalon although they rather got away from him. Never mind, life is full of disappointments.
“I doubt if he will run again this season.”
GOING AFTER THE FIRST RACE
John Egan, jockey of the winner Art Eyes, in the first, reported the going to be “good”.
This description was agreed to by all the other jockeys.

GOSDEN AND FORTUNE CONTINUE FINE RUN
John Gosden and Jimmy Fortune won both big juvenile races at Newmarket’s last meeting and they continued this great run when Murfreesboro justified 4/1 favouritism in this afternoon’s £250000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes.
Gosden said: “We planned this and it came off - Jimmy rode it right. We waited 75 days for this race and wanted to have him in top order.
“He is named after a battlefield in the American Civil War, which was an interesting, bloody battle and horrific for that era. Rather like a horserace here with 30 runners - like a battlefield!
“The far side were leading and coming into the bushes, Jimmy said I better go. He is a nice horse and there wasn’t much between them with the draw making a difference.
“We bought him for 70,000gns and I was on the phone to Tom Goff saying go one more to 75,000gns but we can’t stretch it further.
“Our horse had to race all alone - he ran very well at Newbury last time, won well at Redcar before that and had a pipe opener again at Newbury to start off.
“I thought you guys [the press] were a bit harsh on Leo [the winner of the totesport.com Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket]. It might not have been a vintage Group 2 race but it was certainly Group 3 standard.
“I think we’ll stick to sprinting with Murfreesboro - I ran him over seven furlongs but he didn’t quite see it home. It’s nice to have a sprinter - I like them and I haven’t really had one since Oasis Dream [winner of the 2003 Darley July Cup].”
The winning rider opined: “He feels to me like a sprinter - he’s got a lot of natural speed.”

RYAN AND WALL HAPPY AFTER BOLD EFFORTS
The trainers of Blades Girl and Foxysox - second and third in the sales’ race - were both more than satisfied with their respective charges’ efforts.
Kevin Ryan, who saddled 1,800 gns purchase Blades Girl, said: “She ran a cracker.”
“We’ve always thought a lot of her. She’s a big tall filly, who we’ll probably put away now. When we bring her back next year she’ll be a lovely three-year-old.”
Chris Wall, who is enjoying such a fine year with his juvenile fillies, was smiling after Foxysox was beaten three-quarters of a length and a short head.
He said: “She ran very well and I’m very pleased with her. She’s another filly of ours who is improving.
“Mid-season, she was below par and she needed her last race at Yarmouth when she weakened in the last 100 yards.
“That sharpened her up for today and we thought she’d run well and she has.
“She ran a blinder. We might run her once more this season. She ought to be capable of running another one at either six or seven furlongs.”
The Foxhound filly has yet to register a victory and Wall indicated she’ll either tackle a maiden or a nursery next.

DONNA BLINI BLAZES TO GROUP 1 GLORY
Donna Blini gave trainer Brian Meehan his second successive Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes victory when holding at bay the late-thrusting Wake Up Maggie and third placed Flashy Wings by two necks.
Meehan’s charge - previously successful in the Group 2 Chippenham Lodge Stud Cherry Hinton Stakes on July 5 on the July Course - was always prominent, tracking the early pace set by Dizzy Dreamer.
The two-year-old Bertolini filly came to lead at the two-furlong pole and had enough left in the tank to hold on.
Meehan, successful with Magical Romance 12 months ago, said: “She’s a lovely filly as she proved in the Cherry Hinton.
“We debated the Lowther and the Moyglare, even the Doncaster (sales) race with all that money.
“But we kind of felt it was best to wait and give her time. She’s pretty tough - doesn’t take any prisoners - so you wouldn’t let her down for too long as she’d take you as a prisoner.
“She was a great buy (20,000gns at Doncaster’s St Leger Yearling Sale).
“We will put her away for the year...she’s obviously a Guineas filly. She gallops well and I’m very pleased with her. It’s great to go into the winter with the likes of her. It’s wonderful.”
When asked to assess the latest two Cheveley Park winners, Meehan said: “They’re both very tough but it wouldn’t be fair to compare them.”
Johnny McKeever, the bloodstock agent who bought Donna Blini as well as the previous two Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes winners, said: “I bought her mother Cal Norma’s Lady for a trainer called John Wilson, who used to train at Ayr.
“She won three on the trot as a two-year-old and she was one of my first good purchases 17 or 18 years ago when I started. And this filly reminded me of the mother. Simple as that.”
Winning jockey Michael Kinane commented: “Brian has done a good job with her. I said after winning on her at Newmarket in July, ‘give her a little bit of time as she is a filly with scope - give her a chance to improve’ - and he has brought her here in great shape.
“I was happy in the race - delighted to get a lead and I was going the pace I wanted to be going and she quickened.
“She is capable of getting further and is scopey - she relaxes and will give herself every opportunity.”

WAKE UP MAGGIE NOT SLEEPING
Chris Wall’s Wake Up Maggie went down fighting by only a neck to Donna Blini in a tremendous finish to today’s feature Group 1 Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes.
The trainer said: “There was no disgrace to be second and we were beaten by a better filly on the day. We have no hard luck stories and she quickened up when we wanted her to. In fact they all quickened up and it was a fast run race.
“Obviously, I would have liked to have won but we have lost no caste in defeat to the Cherry Hinton winner.
“Posterity may say that this was not a vintage running of this race but, for the moment, they are the best around and the form was strong.
“I was pleased with her attitude and she battled well.
“The jockey [Allan Munro] was quite confident that she will get a mile next year and we will give it a go and we won’t know until we try.
“The winner found a bit more when we challenged her and I would rather give credit to the winner than make excuses for my filly.
“Wake Up Maggie did suffer a small setback after her win in Ireland but I would not use that as an excuse at all.”
Mick Channon, trainer of the third, favourite Flashy Wings, was also magnaminous in defeat.
He said: “I have absolutely no complaints whatsoever. She’s in good form, the ground was right and I have no excuses.
“She needs a bit further now and, if you remember, I wanted to go to the Moyglare Stakes [over seven furlongs] with her.
“That is the first time that she has been ridden like that and I’ve been wanting to do that for a long time.
“She is finished for the season now. She has done everything right and finished her race well but just didn’t win.
“All credit to the winner who is a good filly. I am delighted and I have peace of mind - she ran a solid race and will be a proper racehorse next year.
“I’ve always thought that she is a Guineas filly and I have never doubted that fact.”

AUSSIE RULES AT NEWMARKET,
IF NOT THE OVAL!
Aussie Rules was given a tremendous ride by Kieren Fallon to squeeze in between second Killybegs and Araafa to hit the front inside the final furlong and win by a short-head in another tremendous finish at Headquarters.
Winning trainer Aidan O’Brien said: “Kieren was very confident to ride him this way and produce him late. This horse loves fast ground and next season he will be a lovely horse.
“We will see how he is but he could come back for the Darley Dewhurst Stakes in a couple of weeks time.
“Kieren likes to ride him now and his dam [Last Second] was a good filly who loved being ridden back a bit. We have switched the tactics and Kieren gave him a great ride.”
Fallon added: “He’s just coming to himself, isn’t he?”
The winner is 40/1 (from 50/1) with Paddy Power for next year’s Stan James 2000 Guineas, while Cashmans go the same price (from 66/1). Totesport rate his chances better, leaving the two-year-old Danehill colt at 33/1 for that classic as well as the Vodafone Derby.
The trainer also had news of his two declared runners in tomorrow’s Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes.
“We are struggling a bit with Art Museum. He had a stone bruise and we will see how he is - he’s not a certain runner,” he revealed.
“Ivan Denisovich is in good form and didn’t like the terrible ground at Deauville. We hope that he runs well.”

KILLYBEGS TO BE PUT AWAY FOR 2006?
Barry Hills indicated that Killybegs will probably not be seen out again this year after finishing a short head second to Aussie Rules.
The Lambourn trainer said: “He’s in the Dewhurst but it’s too early to say. I would say we will probably put him away for next year now.
“Today he’s run a very good race and just got beaten...what can you say?”
Deirdre Johnston, representing her husband Mark, felt inexperience told against the third-placed Stepping Up.
She said “He will have learnt a lot from that. He never saw another horse when winning at Newcastle.
“Here Kevin Darley said it was only in the last furlong that the penny dropped. He also said that he was a lovely horse.
“We would be keen to run him again (this season) and we will look for another Group 3 or a similar sort of race.”

BUSY BOOGIE RETURNS TO WINNING WAYS
Boogie Street has been kept busy this season but he showed himself to be in fine form when darting to a length-and-a-quarter success this afternoon.
The four-year-old Compton Place colt won on his seasonal reappearance at Goodwood but then embarked on an eight-race losing streak.
However, today he was all speed, bursting from the stalls under Richard Hughes and making just about all to record the fourth Listed triumph of his career.
Richard Hannon Jnr, assistant to his father Richard, said: “He did it well. When he gets things his own way, he’s a very good horse.
“He’s probably coming back into a bit of form, so we’ll have a look at the Hong Kong Sprint if we get an invite.
“But he’s in good form. The instructions to Richard were ‘Let him out, let him roll.’ He’s a sprinter, let him sprint.
“His run in the King’s Stand (second) was great but since then he’s been a little bit up and down, but he’s a fast horse with one speed - and you just saw it - flat out.
“You try and mess him around and he can’t adapt to it.”

CORRIDOR CREEPER SECOND
Corridor Creeper could not quite cope with the pace of winner Boogie Street in the Rous Stakes, going down by a length and a quarter to that rival.
Trainer Milton Bradley was not present at the Home Of Racing but co-owner James Frankham said: “The ground beat us - he must have soft ground. The winner is a Group horse who has beaten us twice now.
“Our horse will have one more run and we’ll pray for rain!
“Kieren [Fallon, jockey] said he’s a fair horse, a good horse who must have cut and never run him on this ground again.”
Malcolm Saunders’s Indian Maiden will be returning to Newmarket after finishing a further neck away in third.
The trainer said: “She’s run well over five furlongs as she definitely needs soft ground. I was disappointed when I got here as they didn’t seem to get the rain here and the 3.5mm overnight is nothing, is it?
“She’ll come back here for a six-furlong Listed fillies’ race. Still on this ground, which seems like good to firm, I can’t be disappointed today and, with 50 yards more, she might have won.
“I think the winner is a fast ground horse and John Gosden’s winner in the sales race has form on good to firm ground.”

FIRE AND RAIN SHOWS STRONG RESOLVE
Fire And Rain made a fine racecourse debut to deny 100/30 favourite Mashaahed by a length with a further five lengths back to Red Rocks in third.
Winning trainer Aidan O’Brien said: “He is a lovely horse and Kieren likes him - he was just ready to come here and they looked to go a good gallop.
“He’s got a great attitude and he’ll be a smashing horse for next year. He probably won’t run again this season and we’ll leave him as he learned and travelled well today.”
Laughing after a journalist had suggested we might see the winner next in the classic trial at Sandown, the trainer added: “He moves like his dad [Galileo] - a big, long-striding horse.
“That was great and the travelling over here to England is great for them and Kieren gives them a great education.”
Paddy Power introduced Fire And Rain into their betting for the 2006 Vodafone Derby at 40/1.
The master of Ballydoyle also revealed that Rumplestiltskin, an absentee from last weekend’s Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile, is likely to run in the Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp this weekend.

Angus Gold, racing manager to Hamdan Al Maktoum, owner of the second-place Mashaahed, said: “We’re very pleased with him. The jockey liked him and said we were beaten by a nice horse.
“There’s no instant decision as to whether we’ll run him again this season - we will see.”
Brian Meehan, trainer of the third-placed Red Rocks, said: “He’s improving and has always been the type to make up into a nice three-year-old. He’s a proper horse.
“I will now talk to the owner and see what he wants to do - whether he wants to try and win a race with him this year or whether he wants to put him away for next year.”

PARADISE DOUBLES UP
Paradise Isle produced a repeat performance to bag this six-furlong contest for the second year in succession.
Jockey Kevin Darley always had her handy and she drew clear to deliver a 15-2 victory by a length.
Paradise Isle is a full sister to the £250,00 Tattersall October Auction Stakes winner Murfreesboro.
The triumph was especially pleasing for trainer Chris Wall as it meant he tasted victory after his charge Foxysox finished third in the sales’ race and then Wake Up Maggie was runner-up to Donna Blini in the Skybet Cheveley Park Stakes.
Wall said: “We’ve been in the third spot, second spot and now the winner’s spot - so that’s very satisfactory.
“I thought, when she was a little bit unlucky in the Portland last time, that we’d come here and have a good chance. She’s come into good form just recently.
“It’s a good day for the breeder Barry Green and Bickmarsh Stud as this filly is the full sister to Murfreesboro. They are a good little stud. I’ve had two or three horses off them and they’ve all done me well.
“She usually runs quite well at Newmarket. She won this last year and was third in a Listed race here. She’s won on the July course as well.
“All being well, we’ll come back in two weeks for the fillies’ Listed race over six furlongs that she was third in last year.”

FANSHAWE SECOND AND THIRD
James Fanshawe saddled second and third in the form of Solar Power and Firenze in the concluding handicap, both of whom could not match the finishing speed of Paradise Isle, who won by a length with a neck back to the third.
Solar Power was also second in this event last year. Her rider Eddie Ahern said: “She still seems in good form.”
The trainer concurred with this analysis stating: “She’s back to form now, isn’t she?”
OFFICIAL GOING
Michael Prosser, Clerk of the Course at Newmarket, reports today’s ground as: “Good”. The racecourse has had 3.5mm of rainfall overnight.
“The going-stick reading was 8.1 at 7am and we are forecast for a dry day, 17degrees celsius with plenty of sunshine.
“The track has been split in a similar way to how we did in the spring except that the dividing rail is 10 metres closer to the stands’ side.
“That gives us 30 metres of track on the far side for the Cambridgeshire Meeting, which sees the maximum field for the totesport Cambridgeshire on Saturday reduced to 30 from its old safety factor of 35.
“This is still a huge field and I do not believe that it will in any way detract from the spectacle of this historic race.
“We used approximately 20 metres of track on the stands’ side for last weekend’s Ascot Festival at Newmarket.
“The stall for all races will be on the far side over the three days.”
BETTING NEWS
Today’s main sponsor Sky Bet report money for three contenders in the feature Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes (2.10pm). Irish raider Modeeroch has been supported from 10/1 into 8/1, while Flashy Wings is 9/4 (from 11/4) and Riotous Applause 10/1 (from 14/1).

The same bookmaker has seen cash for Glistening in the opening Unicoin Homes Noel Murless Stakes (1.05pm). Sir Michael Stoute’s charge is a 12/1 chance (from 16/1).
The other horse to have been backed with totesport is Murfreesboro in the £250,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes (1.40pm). Punters may have latched on to the John Gosden/Jimmy Fortune combination, which took both big juvenile races at Newmarket’s last meeting, and the two-year-old is 11/4 (from 7/2).
Paddy Power has also seen money for Glistening, who is 14/1 (from 16/1), while their market mover in the £250,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes is the Michael Jarvis-trained Borehan - 20/1 (from 33/1).
In the Rous Stakes at 3.20pm, the Irish bookie reports backing for If Paradise and Treasure Cay, who are both now 14/1 (from 16/1).
Paddy Power’s one other mover is Yomalo in the concluding EBF Fillies’ Handicap (4.30pm). The five-year-old has been trimmed into 5/1 (from 6/1).
