WIN QUOTES RACE 3
The totesport.com Royal Lodge Stakes
LEO GIVES GOSDEN GROUP 2 SUCCESS
Leo produced the best performance of his career to date when recording a one-and-a-quarter length success from Kilworth in the totesport.com Royal Lodge Stakes.
The duo disputed the lead from the stalls and were the only two in it approaching the final furlong.
Leo stayed on strongest under Jimmy Fortune with the pair going on to register this Group 2 success on the back of a second-place effort in a Listed race at Goodwood earlier this month.
It was the Pivotal colt’s second win of the term - he broke his maiden tag back at Doncaster in May.
Barry O’Dowd, travelling head groom to the victorious trainer John Gosden, commented: “Jimmy said that whatever he asked, the horse couldn’t do enough for him. He said he’s turned into a proper horse now.
“The boss wanted Jimmy to be handy and be positive on him.
This was Gosden’s third victory in the totesport.com Royal Lodge Stakes, following Al Jadeed (2002) and Benny The Dip (1996) who went on to win the Derby the following year.
“I really wouldn’t know whether the boss will have something else in mind for him (this season).”
Fortune said: “He has always been a pretty nice horse. I think the track has probably suited this horse better than Goodwood.
“He’s a big long-striding horse - the straight mile suited him.”
Paddy Power and VC bet both introduced Leo into their 2000 Guineas betting at 33-1.
Paddy Power eased City Of Troy, the 11-8 beaten favourite, for the Newmarket colt’s classic. He is now 25-1 from 16s.

CALLAGHAN AND RYAN DELIGHTED
“That was a good runand I am very pleased with him,” enthused Neville Callaghan after Kilworth had just been run out of the totesport.com Royal Lodge Stakes by Leo.
“And I am not at all surprised, either, as I have always liked him and thought that he would be a good colt.
“Mind you, I think I like him all the more as I own him outright and he is certainly the best horse I have ever owned. I have been trying to sell him, but nothing has worked out and there is a very nice prize (£14,376) for being second here.
“I don’t know about him running again this season. He is in the Racing Post Trophy and there is also the Zetland Stakes back here over a mile and a quarter; he will certainly stay well.”
Kevin Ryan was delighted with the show by third placed Palace Episode. “That was a really good run but I just wish there had been a stronger pace,” he said. “I know there always has to be a winner and a loser, but it would have helped if they had gone a stronger gallop.
“He had to have a lead as this was only his second run and he didn’t have the experience to make the running himself.
“When he had to miss Doncaster (the colt scoped badly) he had to miss a few days so I think there is still scope for a bit more improvement in him.
“I don’t know if he will run again this year, but he is in the Dewhurst, so we may look at that.”
Sir Michael Stoute, trainer of the fourth City Of Troy, the 11/8 favourite, said that the slow, muddly gallop “was the same for everyone, but I was disappointed and particularly when he was the first horse off the bridle. Whatever happened today he was not going to run again this season so now he will be put away for the winter.”

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MARKET LEADERS
Darryll Holland, rider of the 11/8 favourite City Of Troy who finished fourth, said: “He travelled very well at a good pace but he just did not pick up as well as I expected - maybe the ground stumped his speed.”
Frankie Dettori, who partnered the 100/30 hope True Cause in fifth, said: “He didn’t really handle the track. When I started to let him down he went everywhere. He probably needs to mature a bit as well.”
OUIJA IN GOOD SHAPE AFTER COMEBACK WIN
Trainer Ed Dunlop this morning revealed that his star charge Ouija Board is in fine fettle following her success in yesterday’s Princess Royal John Doyle Stakes.
The Cape Cross filly had been off the track for 101 days since the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes after which she was found to have sustained an injury to her near fore.
But the four-year-old showed no ill effects of that setback when running away with the Group 3 at Newmarket.
Dunlop said: “She’s fine this morning - she’s sound and she ate up. She’s lost very little weight and has come out of the race very well, which is good.”
Ouija Board is entered in both the Prix De L’Opera and the Prix De L’Arc de Triomphe - which are due to be run at Longchamp next Sunday, October 2.
However, no decision has yet been made as to her participation in France and Dunlop hinted that a return to the Breeders’ Cup for the Filly and Mare Turf, which she won last year, remains the major target.
Dunlop added: “Tomorrow (Mon) my head lad Chris Hinson will ride her and she will have a walk and a trot.
“After that I will have a discussion with Lord and Lady Derby, and Peter Stanley and we will consider whether to go to France with the filly.
“But I’ve always maintained that all roads lead to Belmont Park (On Saturday, October 29).”
Dunlop also gave credit to his staff at Gainsbororough Stables, who have all played a major part in helping Ouija Board return to winning ways.
He said: “The team have done a fantastic job. I’m thrilled for them and, most importantly, thrilled for the horse.”
STARCRAFT ‘VERY WELL’
AFTER QEII GLORY
Luca Cumani was this morning more than happy with the condition of his Queen Elizabeth II Stakes - sponsored by Barclays plc - hero Starcraft.
The son of Soviet Star raced to a three-quarters of a length triumph from Dubawi yesterday.
Newmarket-based trainer Cumani said: “Starcraft is very well. He has eaten up, is bright and happy this morning.
“He didn’t have a hard race and everything is good.”
When asked to outline what’s next for the five-year-old, Cumani replied: “Either the Champion Stakes (Saturday, October 15) or the Breeders’ Cup (Saturday, October 29).
“The owner (Paul Makin) hasn’t got to make a decision immediately, so he will think about it.”
PRESS REACTION TO STARCRAFT
Opinions among racing writers at Newmarket yesterday were divided as to whether the Australian horse Starcraft won the Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes entirely on merit or whether he was helped on his way to victory by Frankie Dettori’s misjudged ride on the favourite Dubawi.
“This may not have been the Italian’s finest hour,” wrote Brough Scott in the Sunday Telegraph, while acknowledging that “Starcraft might have been too powerful for Dubawi whichever way Dubawi had tacked from the start.”
Andrew Longmore in the Sunday Times had little doubt that “the Australian-owned five-year-old profited from a poor ride by Frankie Dettori”, but adding that “by the time Dettori had realised his mistake...Starcraft had made the decisive move of the race.”
In the Observer Eddie Fremantle claimed that “it is hard to fathom why Dettori ignored the efforts of his pacemaker”, before giving him credit for accepting the blame for the defeat and saying that speculation about Dettori’s ride “should not detract from the winner’s performance. From the stands, it looked like the best horse won.”
Sue Montgomery in the Independent on Sunday called Dubawi “the victim of a tactical disaster” as “Starcraft donned the European milers’ crown” and “the stiff, tight-lipped body language in the Godolphin camp spoke volumes.”
As far as the Press Association was concerned, “Luca Cumani’s chestnut was always on top...was too strong and claimed a famous success.”
The harshest criticism of Dettori came from Alastair Down in the Racing Post, when he referred to “rides from the pit”, and “doing exactly what you were told not to do” before claiming that “he must have lost more ground than the three-quarters of a length he was beaten.” Remarkably, the word ‘Starcraft’ does not appear in his copy at any stage.
Perhaps rather surprisingly, the Australian press resisted the temptation to crow, though no doubt the big time difference gave them little chance to see the race live and get their knives out.
The Australian Press Association confined itself to saying that “ex-Australian Starcraft upset the cream of Europe’s top milers”, while a website in that country referred to Frankie Dettori being “under fire for failing to follow instructions.”

ECHELON SPEEDS TO SECOND LISTED SUCCESS
The colours of Cheveley Park Stud were in the winner’s circle after an impressive display from Echelon in the opener.
The Danehill filly bounced back from a slightly disappointing effort at Sandown last time with a three-quarters of a length triumph from Attune.
The 2-1 favourite was always prominent and picked up nicely for Frankie Dettori to lead inside the final furlong, going on to clinch a second Listed victory of the term.
The winning trainer Sir Michael Stoute said: “She’s a tough, honest little filly.
“We did run her in the 1000 Guineas but she’s not that class. She’s Listed, Group 3 class.
“She goes on any ground. It was very bad at Sandown - I don’t think she wants that extreme of soft ground.”
Asked whether she would run again this season, Stoute replied, “You can’t say at this stage.
“As you turn into October, all of a sudden the fillies can go on you. You’ve just got to wait and see.”

NO MORE THIS SEASON FOR CLINET
Clinet, who ran third behind Salamanca in the last race here yesterday, was in action again 21 hours later and once more acquitted herself with credit when filling third place behind Echelon and Attune in the opening Miles and Morrison October Stakes.
“There is no truth in the story that she will run again on Tuesday,” said her owner Andrew Cohen, and in fact this will have been Clinet’s final run of the season.
“She wants fast ground and I don’t think that there is any chance of that here or anywhere else in Europe for the rest of this year,” said Cohen, who decided that the filly should make her quick reappearance today “after the third bottle of wine last night -- and that is true !
“We declared her for yesterday and today because we were worried about the weather. Good ground is really too soft for her, so any rain last night would have ruled out today and so we ran yesterday after having made the two declarations.
“We decided that she should run again today after she had run so well yesterday and taken the race so well; she is so very tough and genuine.”
Now Clinet will go back to Mr Cohen’s Wood Hall Stud for the winter and then return to John Hills’ stable early next year with the aim of trying to win a Listed race next season as a four-year-old when she gets suitably fast ground.
GOING AFTER THE FIRST
Frankie Dettori on the winner Echelon reported the ground as “good”.
Jamie Spencer said that it was “goodish ground”.
Tony Culhane described it as “ on the slowish side of good, but lovely ground”.
Darryll Holland thought it was the “same as yesterday”.
Seb Sanders said it was “good ground”

MUBTAKER OFF ON HIS TRAVELS
Mubtaker will be journeying far afield, either to Italy or Canada, after his success in the Group Three Ouija Board, Wilko and Liverpool Vets Cumberland Lodge Stakes gave Marcus Tregoning his fourth success in the race in the last five years, following two strikes with High Accolade (2003 & 2004) and one with Nayef (2001).
“It will have to be one or the other, the timings won’t allow him to run in both,” said Tregoning’s assistant Patrick McEwan and, with the Grade One Canadian International in mind, it was fitting that there should be a member of the Woodbine team here on a scouting mission.
“I don’t know about him retiring,” went on McEwan of Mubtaker, who is still an eight-year-old entire horse but is as good natured as you could ask and, in McEwan’s words, “is a real Christian.”
Having chased the front-running True Lover from the start, Mubtaker went to the front inside the last three furlongs and then, when faced with a battle with Self Defense, really put his head down to see off his rival.
“It is great to see him win like that and show that he has retained all his old enthusiasm,” added McEwan after Mubtaker had won by a length and three-quarters.

LAVELLE DELIGHT AT SELF DEFENSE SHOW
Andover trainer Emma Lavelle wore a big smile after Self Defense put up a fine performance to take second spot behind Mubtaker.
The eight-year-old dual-purpose gelding could possibly return to Newmarket on Friday for the Fishpools Furnishings Godolphin Stakes, contested over a mile and a half.
Lavelle said: “He is such a special horse because he runs at the top level over hurdles and on the Flat. He gives his all every time.
“If they’d gone a bit more of a gallop earlier, I think it would have helped us. He just probably likes that last change of gear.
“He is in on Friday, a Listed race. But we will see...play it by ear. There are loads of options.”

BARON’S PIT IN 20-1 SHOCK
Baron’s Pit, running in blinkers for the first time, provided a real shock result with his 20-1 defeat of Fayr Jag in the totepool Diadem Stakes.
The horse, who joined Amanda Perrett’s stable at the start of the season after having been previously with Richard Hannon, had run well enough at Goodwood last time to suggest that all was not lost, “but,” said his trainer’s assistant and husband Mark, “he had also given the impression that as he got older he was getting a bit wiser” and so they decided that a pair of blinkers might persuade him to put his whole heart into the job.
“In fairness to him, he ran well first time out at Goodwood and then when he was disappointing in Ireland the race may have come a bit too soon after Goodwood. He ran well enough again at Goodwood last time.
“He broke down at the end of his three-year-old season, so his owner-breeder Jeff Thomas, who is a lovely man, has really been very patient with him. Unfortunately he had some sort of domestic problem this morning, and so he was not able to come but at least he has been able to see it on television.”
Perrett added that as Baron’s Pit had been in only moderate form they had not planned a campaign for him, but after this they can get a bit more serious and he may he back here next month for the Challenge Stakes on Champions’ Day.

FAYR JAG - ‘HE’S RUN A CRACKER’
Fayr Jag went down narrowly to Baron’s Pit in the Group 2 sprint but owner Jonathan Gill wasn’t too disappointed at the neck defeat.
He said: “He ran a cracking race. We thought we had won but the line never came quick enough.
“He may run in the Bentinck (Newmarket, October 14) but we will have to see how he comes out of this.”
Richard Quinn, who rode Fayr Jag, said: “From being drawn 10, we got a nice position behind the favourite (Avonbridge). I thought Fayr Jag took it up as we hit the rising ground but the winner was too strong for me in the last 50 yards.
“It was an excellent effort. He likes it fast and this was probably as slow as he’d go on.”
Roger Charlton, trainer of the third-placed Avonbridge, said: ”I was very pleased with the way he ran. I just feel that he doesn’t quite get the trip.
“Like Patavellian, he is a five-and-a-half furlong horse.
“He will probably run in the Prix de l’Abbaye next weekend.”
Charlton could be triple-handed in the Group 1 race at Longchamp with Striking Ambition and Patavellian also pencilled in for it.

OUNINPOHJA MAKES IT FAMOUS FIVE
Ouninpohja racked up a remarkable five wins on the trot when getting home with two-and-a-half lengths to spare from Camrose.
The Alan Swinbank-trained four-year-old didn’t provide much of an indication of what was to come at the start of the term with a third-placed effort his best run from his opening three starts.
But the tide turned with a success at Doncaster in July and the bay gelding hasn’t looked back since.
Swinbank said: “His first two runs this season he probably wasn’t just right. But to be honest, we were probably pushing him a little bit.
“When you are in the yard every day, horses will tell you when they’re coming right.
“He’ll be in the November Handicap. Whether he’ll go there, I don’t know. I think there’s another race down here over 12 furlongs in about three weeks.
“He will be going to Dubai this winter, anyway.”
Dean McKeown, who rode the 7-2 scorer, said: “It gets tougher as you go up in the handicap and this was a slightly better race than last time.
“He has taken it well, but there is going to be a time when it’s going to come to an end.
“He’s won five now and gone up each time. He’s gone up 21lb already in the weights - whether or not there’s another 2lb in him, we’ll have to see.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE SIX

HILLS JUST BEATS HILLS
The twins Michael and Richard Hills are almost indistinguishable and almost inseparable as far as winners are concerned. “We tot up at the end of every year to see who is doing best and I think Richard is about ten in front at the moment,” said Michael after he had pulled one back by riding Kamanda Laugh, trained by his father Barry, to pip Richard on King’s Majesty, in the closing Ascot Festival at Newmarket Handicap.
“That is six races he has won, three of them this season,” said the trainer as he was reminded by the winning part-owner John Sillett that every horse he has sent to South Bank has won. “I am going to make it difficult for him next year, though, by sending him three horses next year !”
Hills said that Kamanda Laugh “likes a bit of cut but does not want it too soft; it was too soft when he ran at Doncaster last time.
“He is in the October sales but we haven’t decided if we will send him, and if he doesn’t go I expect he will stay in training next year. We might think about the Lincoln for him, but he didn’t run very well in it this year.”

CROWD NEWS
Today’s attendance amounted to 5,126.
Lisa Hancock, managing director of Newmarket Racecourses Trust, said “it has been a disappointing weekend crowd-wise, but the racing has been fantastic and it’s now all systems go for the totesport Cambridgeshire meeting with its three Group 1 races on Thursday, Friday and Saturday next week.”
DANE O’NEILL RULED OUT TODAY
Jockey Dane O’Neill has been signed off by the doctor for today after sustaining a leg injury at Haydock yesterday.
O’Neill, who is set to return tomorrow (Mon), bruised a leg when leaving the stalls on board Mystery Lot in the concluding race.
He was only due to have ridden Harlestone Grey in the totesport 0800 221 221 Handicap. The seven-year-old gelding will now be ridden by Seb Sanders.
GOING NEWS AT 10 AM
The going for the second day of the Ascot Festival at Newmarket remains
GOOD.
“The early morning rain will be gone soon and will not have amounted to anything, just a spit and a spot and not even one millimetre,” said clerk of the course Michael Prosser. “The only effect it will have had on the ground is that of a heavy dew.
“The forecast is for a gradual improvement through the day with some sunshine and a temperature of 19degrees Celcius (68 degrees Fahrenheit).”
BETTING NEWS
Things have been quiet, as they almost always are on Sundays, in the offices this morning, but several of the runners have taken punters’ fancy, beginning with Attune, who has been cut from 8-1 to 7-1 by Paddy Power in the Miles and Morrison October Stakes (2.0).
In the totesport.com Royal Lodge Stakes (3.10) the sponsors report keen interest in the unbeaten City of Troy, whom they have brought in from 9-4 to 13-8, and in another of their sponsored races, the totepool Diadem Stakes (3.45), they have cut Lucky Spin from 6-1 to 8-1.
Lucky Spin has also been attracting interest with clients of VC Bet, who have trimmed him by a point to 7-1, while both they and totesport have done business over Spring Jim in the totesport 0800 221 221 Handicap, shortening him respectively from 6-1 to 9-2 and 5-1 to 7-2.
