PREVIEW OF totesport.com ROYAL LODGE STAKES

Palace Episode, who would have started favourite for the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster earlier in the month but had to be withdrawn at the last minute, will bid for better luck against eight rivals in the totesport Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket tomorrow. Having won an ordinary maiden race at Catterick first time out Palace Episode, who is trained by Kevin Ryan, stepped up smartly on that form when he got the better of Araafa in the Listed Acomb Stakes at York last month.

He is one of two unbeaten colts in the race, the other being City of Troy, whose trainer Sir Michael Stoute has won the race twice in the past with Desert Secret and Mujaazif. City of Troy, who is held in very high regard at Freemason Lodge, won his maiden at Newbury in good style and pleased connections with his attitude when just getting the better of Art Deco at Doncaster.

The Godolphin team, who won the Royal Lodge last year, are represented this time by True Cause, who has won his last two starts, most recently beating Leo by a neck in a Listed heat at Goodwood. Leo’s team clearly think that they can reverse that form here as they are going to take his conqueror on again.

It has taken Kilworth a while to justify his big home reputation, which he did at Chepstow last time and a line through Araafa puts him not far behind Palace Episode, though he has a bit of ground to make up.

Charlie Cool followed his pleasing debut here by winning a smart maiden at the Ebor meeting, beating Amwaal by two and a half lengths, and another last time out winner is Doctor Dash, who showed marked improvement when accounting for Jeu de Mot in a Listed race at Salisbury.

The field is completed by two maidens, Areyoutalkingtome and Well Armed. Both have shown respectable form, but it is asking a lot to lose your maiden in Group 2 company.

STARCRAFT STRIKES FOR AUSTRALIA

The giant Australian horse Starcraft, who stands 17 hands high, headed a real international outcome to the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes as, trained by an Italian, Luca Cumani, and ridden by a Frenchman, Christophe Lemaire, he outran the 6/4 favourite Dubawi to win by three-quarters of a length.

“I am over the moon after that,” said Cumani. “It was so good that I want to do it all over again, and again. We want to prove him to be the champion miler in the world and I think we are three-quarters of the way to doing that.

“Once we had done all we could with his training, the big thing was to keep him calm, and after that to keep the trainer calm which was much more difficult.

“But he is a very good horse, as he showed there and I was not at all worried about putting up a jockey who had never ridden on this course before. He is a very good jockey and he did a very good job.

“I don’t know what the plans are for him and we shall have to talk about the Breeders’ Cup with Paul Makin, who heads the Australian Syndicate who own him. I think it will cost about $300,000 to enter him and that is a lot of money.”

Christophe Lemaire described how he was determined not to panic when the field of six split into two groups and he just let Starcraft gallop along.

“At the three-furlong marker I wanted to give him a blow, and then when I gave him a crack with the whip he responded very well.

“All the time I was looking for Frankie on Dubawi as I knew he had to come at some time. My horse had not been doing a lot when he was first in front, but when Dubawi came to him he picked up again. Dubawi got to him and that just gave him the incentive to go on again and he ran on very well.”

Paul Makin, Starcraft’s owner, said after the victory: “That was enormous - coming all this way to get the money.

“It looks like he is the best in the world at the distance. I don’t mind the Ashes now - I am really pleased that you guys won them!

“I only really wanted to win this race - we might go to America but I always ask the plane to fly faster when I go over it!”

Starcraft
The New Zealand-bred Starcraft was purchased by agent Rob Dawe and began his career in Australia, where he developed into a high-class performer. He won three times in 2003 before really coming into his own last year, when his six successes included the Group One Chipping Norton Stakes over a mile at Warwick Farm, the Group One Australian Derby over a mile and a half at Randwick and the Group One Mudgway Partsworld Stakes at Hastings in New Zealand. Last season ended with a very decent effort in one of Australia’s greatest races, the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley, when he finished third behind Savabeel. For all of his starts in Australia, Starcraft was trained by Gary Newham but at the start of the year his owner Paul Makin, inspired by the success of Choisir in 2003, decided that he would like his star performer to challenge for Europe’s top races and he was transferred to Luca Cumani. His first start for Cumani came in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot at York in June, when he ran a fine race to finish third behind Valixir and Rakti. He then headed to Sandown for the Coral-Eclipse, but ran a disappointing race in only finishing sixth to Oratorio. He bounced back to form in no uncertain style last time when taking the mile Group One Prix du Moulin at Longchamp on September 4, when he had the likes of Whipper and Valixir in arrears and confirmed that form by winning today’s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes from Dubawi.

The Australian Syndicate
The Australian Syndicate is headed by Paul Makin. Based on Queensland’s Gold Coast, Makin made his fortune by gambling on both Australian and Asian racetracks although he has also quipped that he has also lost a couple of fortunes as well as his wife. He has now stopped betting professionally and has dedicated his attention to owning racehorses.

Luca Cumani
Luca Cumani was born in Milan on April 7, 1949. His father, Sergio Cumani, was a highly successful trainer in Italy until his death in 1980. A well-known amateur rider in his home country, Luca Cumani rode 85 winners throughout his career including the 1972 Moet and Chandon Silver Magnum (the amateurs’ Derby) at Epsom on Meissen. Cumani took out a licence to train in 1976 after assisting Henry Cecil for two years. He bought Bedford House Stables in Newmarket for £75,000 and sent out his first winner from the yard when Three Legs obliged in the Duke Of York Stakes at York on May 13, 1976. Ten-times champion trainer Cecil taught Cumani well as he has lifted big-race prizes including the 1984 St Leger (Commanche Run), 1991 Irish 1,000 Guineas (Ensconse), the 1983 Arlington Million (Tolomeo), the Irish 2,000 Guineas and Breeders’ Cup Mile in 1994 with Barathea and the 2002 Irish 1,000 Guineas with Gossamer. But Cumani believes that the best horse he trained was the 2003 BHB Horse of The Year Falbrav, winner of the Prix d’Ispahan, Coral-Eclipse, Juddmonte International, Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and Hong Kong Cup. His partnership with the Aga Khan brought Derby success in 1988 with Kahyasi, who also went on to capture the Irish version at the Curragh. However, the association with the French-based owner was terminated in 1990 when the Aga Khan decided to withdraw 78 horses from Britain following the disqualification of 1989 Oaks ‘winner’ Aliysa, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, due to the alleged presence of a banned substance in a post-race sample. The move hit Cumani hard and it took several years for the stable to recover from the blow and, although the Aga Khan sent yearlings again in 1997, another positive test saw the owner leave Bedford House again in January, 2000. Among those Aga Khan horses was Daliapour, who Cumani trained to finish second in both the English and Irish Derbys in 1999. Cumani saddled High-Rise to win the previous year’s Vodafone Derby. With his wife Sara, Cumani runs Fittocks Stud near Newmarket and bred the 2001 St Leger winner Milan.

Christophe Lemaire
Christophe-Patrice Lemaire rode 14 winners as an amateur before going against his father’s wishes and turning professional, when he became attached to Andre Fabre’s powerful stable. He is now one of France’s leading Flat jockeys and his major successes include the 2003 Group 1 Prix Jean Prat and Grand Prix de Paris with Vespone although the best horse he has partnered is the brilliant filly Divine Proportions, whose Group 1 victories include this year’s French 1,000 Guineas and French Oaks, and last season’s Prix Morny and Prix Marcel Boussac. He had his first British success at York in June when winning the Group 2 King’s Stand Stakes on Chineur at the transferred Royal Ascot meeting. Starcraft’s victory today was his first Group One victory in Britain.

FRANKIE DETTORI BLAMES HIMSELF FOR DUBAWI’S DEFEAT

Frankie Dettori feels he should have won the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Dubawi who was beaten three quarters of a length by Starcraft.

Godolphin’s retained jockey said: “ I was on the best horse and I got beat - it is as simple as that.

“I was meant to come on the stands’ side but unfortunately Rakti and the other one - Mullins Bay - took me too far across and I stayed put in the middle and got beat - it was a costly mistake.

“It did make the difference as I went 20 yards further than the rest, because when they died in the middle I had to come across to the stands’ side.

“I was drawn six and I was told to come on the stands’ side by Sheikh Mohammed. Accidents happen but it is so frustrating.

“If I had been drawn better, it would have been easier for me to do what I had wanted. I wish I could ride the race again.”

FIFTH RACE QUOTES
QUEEN ELIZABETH II STAKES (GROUP 1)

TACTICS DON’T PAN OUT FOR GODOLPHIN

A tactical renewal of the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes failed to work in Dubawi’s favour when the field split into two groups.

Godolphin had planned for their three-year-old to race on the stands’ rail, along with pacemaker Blatant, but Frankie Dettori’s mount was carried out to the centre of the course by Rakti and then switched back to the stands’ side in the closing stages, going down by three-quarters of a length to Starcraft.

“It was very unfortunate,” said Godolphin’s racing manager Simon Crisford. “The plan was not to be in the middle of the course but Frankie said he got carried out there but we wanted him on the stands’ rail. We had to switch back over to the stands and lost a lot of ground as a result so it was unfortunate.

“The last thing we said before the horse left the paddock was that if Rakti stays in the middle to go down the stands’ side, we had an idea they might do that. Frankie’s pretty upset about the whole thing and in the heat of the battle after the race he said it was a complete cock up.

“Blatant set a French style pace, similar to how they would go in the Prix Jacques Le Marois, which was just what we wanted.

“All credit to the winner, and it’s great to have an international success like that, but we’d like to take him on again. If he’s at the Breeders’ Cup we’ll look forward to meeting him again there. We gave him a good fight today.”

EVEN MORE QUEEN ELIZABETH II QUOTES

Philip Robinson, Rakti’s jockey, said: “I wanted to stay away from the Godolphin pacemaker in case we ended up going too fast behind him.

"But it was the ground that beat him in the end - he just can’t act when there is some cut."

EXCELLENT FIVE-DAY CONFIRMATIONS FOR THE SKY BET CHEVELEY PARK STAKES & SHADWELL STUD MIDDLE PARK STAKES NEXT WEEK

Thursday’s Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes has 14 top-class two-year-old fillies going forward after today’s confirmation stage for the Group One race.

The Mick Channon-trained Flashy Wings, who surprisingly lost her unbeaten record when second in the Watership Down Stud Sales Race at Newbury a week ago, could run in the Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes. The sponsors make her the 5/2 favourite for the six-furlong contest, with Wake Up Maggie at 3/1 and Nidaal a 100/30 chance.

Wake Up Maggie, trained by Chris Wall, won the valuable Tattersalls Ireland Sale Stakes at the Curragh last month from Cool Creek who has since boosted the form by taking the Group Two Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury. Ed Dunlop, who sent out Ouija Board to an impressive success in today’s opener, has Nidhaal, winner of two of her three starts, including when successful in the Listed Dick Poole Fillies Stakes at Salisbury on the first of this month.

Fellow Newmarket trainer James Fanshawe has supplemented recent Redcar maiden winner Riotous Applause. Ireland’s champion trainer Aidan O'Brien has recent Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Rumplestiltskin engaged as well as Lowther Stakes third Beauty Bright and Oh How Lovely.

Friday’s Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes has three of Aidan O’Brien’s top colts in it - the unbeaten pair of Horatio Nelson and Art Museum are joined by Ivan Denisovich - while Prince Of Light, winner of his last three races, heads the home challenge.

WINNING QUOTES RACE ONE
PRINCESS ROYAL JOHN DOYLE STAKES

OUIJA BOARD RETURNS IN TRIUMPH

Ouija Board, last year’s horse of the year but this season restricted to just one disappointing effort at Royal Ascot at York in June, came storming back with a two and a half lengths defeat of Briolette in the Group Three Princess Royal John Doyle Stakes.

“That was fantastic,” said the filly’s trainer Ed Dunlop. “Though everything has gone very smoothly in the last couple of weeks with her, it has been a very long time to get her back and there have been plenty of problems.

“Paris remains a possibility and you should remember that she is in two races there as she has been entered for the Prix de l’Opera as well as the Arc. We will see how she is in the morning and, if we are not happy with her, we shall not hesitate to decide against Paris. Belmont (for the Breeders’ Cup on Saturday, October 29) is very much the big part of the plan.”

Ouija Board is a 16-1 shot for the Arc with Paddy Power, who also quote her at 5-2 for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare, the race she won at Lone Star Park in Texas last year. Cashmans put her in at 9-4 for Belmont.

“It is a very tough call for the Arc, which is only a week away,” said the winning filly’s owner-breeder Lord Derby. “It has been a very long time to get her back and Royal Ascot at York was a disappointment, but everyone who has been riding her work recently has been adamant that she is back to her best. The Horse of the Year is back!

“Watching her today was probably the least stressful of all the times we have watched her in the last couple of years. Either it was a case of last season’s horse of the year being back to what she was, or else she just hasn’t made it and this will be her final appearance.

“My wife Cazzie and I and my brother Peter (Stanley) made sure that we sat in the same seats that we were in when she won the Pretty Polly last year and Frankie had her on the wide outside all the way through the race so it was nice and easy to see her!”.

DETTORI IMPRESSED WITH OUIJA BOARD

Frankie Dettori, riding Ouija Board for the first time in a race, was most impressed with the four-year-old filly on her return to action

He said: “I was very taken with her. She went down to the post brilliantly. All credit to Ed (Dunlop - the trainer), he had to sit and wait all year. He brought her up here like a superstar and she gave me a fantastic feel.

“I was pleased to answer the call here (to take the ride) and we will have to see what happens in the future - job done.

“The ground is really, really good. There are no excuses for anybody.”

EVACUATION OF THE MILLENNIUM STAND

The Millennium Grandstand at Newmarket was briefly evacuated just before the first race because a heat alarm went off.

On investigation, it was found that a BBC arc light in commentator Jim McGrath’s working area set off the heat sensor.

The all-clear to go back into the stand was quickly given and the racing was not delayed.

BRIOLETTE NO MATCH FOR OUIJA

The progressive Sadler’s Wells filly Briolette, carrying the colours of breeders Diane Nagle and Sue Magnier, delighted trainer Aidan O’Brien when finishing two and a half lengths second to brilliant winner Ouija Board in the Group 3 John Doyle Princess Royal Stakes.

“I think we’ve come up against a great filly today,” said O’Brien. “But our’s is progressing all the time and has run a great race.”

GOING AFTER THE FIRST RACE

Phillip Robinson reproted that the going was “good to soft”.

Kieren Fallon said that it was “on the slow side of good”.

Richard Hills thought it was “good”.

Alan Munro said of the ground that it was “perfect racing ground though a touch slow”.

Declan McDonogh said that it was on “the dead side of good”.

Jamie Spencer said that it was “slow”.

SECOND RACE WINNING QUOTES

LAND SPRINGS 50/1 SHOCK

The Jamie Poulton-trained Land ‘n Stars was promoted to 8/1 joint favouritism with the sponsor for next months totesport Cesarewitch after springing a 50/1 surprise in the toteexacta Fenwolf Stakes.

“I liked him when he was at Charles Cyzer’s and that’s why I bought him when he went to the sales,” said Poulton. “He was always going to come good in a race like this and I thought his price didn’t reflect his chance, we had a bit on this morning! Wherever Tungsten Strike finished, he wasn’t going to be far away.

“I thought this two miles on a galloping track was going to play into his hands and he’ll come back here for the Cesarewitch unless it came up soft. He was certainly the value this morning at 25/1 for the Cesarewitch - I’m happy enough with the weight he’s got.

“John Egan is my first jockey, he has the call on mine when he wants to ride them, but I think he might struggle to get Paul Doe off.

“Then next year all being well we’ll think about the Melbourne Cup. I’ve always thought you need a horse for that which not only stays but has tactical speed as well.”

PLACED QUOTES RACE TWO

SENDINTANK “MAY NEVER RACE AGAIN”

Sendintank, who had been a leading fancy for next month’s totesport Cesarewitch, finished third to 50-1 winner Land ‘n Stars in the toteexacta Fenwolf Stakes, but also finished very lame and his trainer Stuart Williams fears that “he will never be able to race again.

“It looks very much as if he has broken down on his near fore and it looks very unlikely that he will be able to run again,” said Williams.

“I shan’t really be much the wiser in the morning, either, so I shall probably leave him comfortable until the middle of next week and then get the vets to have a look at him, but my first reaction is that it is highly unlikely that he will ever be able to see a racecourse again. There is no chance of him running in the Cesarewitch, as far as I can see.”

Meanwhile plans remain “fluid” for runner-up Larkwing, as far as trainer Geoff Wragg is concerned. “As he has been beaten by a 50-1 shot he surely should not go up much for that. He will stay in training next year and I hope we can keep him on a reasonable handicap mark,” he said.

THIRD RACE WINNING QUOTES
MEON VALLEY STUD FILLIES’ MILE (GROUP 1)

NANNINA ON TOP

Nannina provided a Group 1 victory for locally-based owner-breeders Cheveley Park Stud when holding off Alexandrova by a short-head to take the Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile.

“I thought beforehand that the Cliveden Stud filly (Cross Channel) would make the running and she did, setting a proper pace,” said winning trainer John Gosden. “Kieren (Fallon) had Jimmy boxed in, they were perfectly legitimate tactics, and he decided to go round the outside rather than trying to nip up Kieren’s inner.

“She got up to beat a nice Sadler’s Wells filly with the May Hill winner in third - it was a good race. I see her as a Guineas filly next year and then she’d go up to a mile and quarter for something like the Prix Diane.

“She won in sweltering heat in Pontefract then we rode her wrongly in a Group 2 at the July Course - I danced one dance I shouldn’t have done. She was then a bit unlucky when third in the Princess Margaret, she probably should have been second.”

Both the winner’s sire, Medicean, and dam, Hill Hopper, raced for Cheveley Park Stud and the farm’s managing director, Chris Richardson, added: “It’s so important for the stud that we have a stallion like Medicean, who has produced winners of this calibre from his first crop. John’s been mentioning the 1000 Guineas all along and it’s a nice thing to think about over the winter.”

Nannina is now a 16/1(from 33/1) chance for the 1000 Guineas here next year with William Hill. Alexandrova remains at 25/1 \with the same bookmakers.

FOURTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
totetrifecta HANDICAP STAKES

IVORY IMPRESSES HUGHES

Richard Hughes partnered the Roger Charlton-trained All Ivory to a comfortable three-quarters of a length success in the totetrifecta Handicap to the delight of Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Prince Khalid Abdulla.

“He’s very honest and straightforward and a thoroughly consistent horse,” said Grimthorpe. “They went a good pace, travelled well and my only real worry was that we’d end up drawn on the wrong side but the ground seemed very even, they’ve done a fantastic job.

“There could well be another handicap for him here at the Cesarewitch meeting and we’d consider keeping him in training next year, his sire Halling was a better four-year-old.”

Hughes added: “He had a huge horse on his outside and he’s only a three-year-old so it intimidated him a bit. I thought he wouldn’t do anything at halfway but he really got going when I got him off the rail and picked up my stick.”

PLACED QUOTES RACE FOUR
totetrifecta HANDICAP

MOAYED MAY BE OUT AGAIN ON FRIDAY

Moayed, the subject of a major gamble in the morning when he was supported from 25-1, narrowly failed to land the touch and the spoils when he was beaten by All Ivory in the totetrifecta Handicap, after going off at 9-1.

“He has run a cracking race, all the more so as he lost ground at the start, but that is him,” said his trainer Nick Littmoden. “But he does that all the time nowadays and it suits him to be ridden from behind, and in any case he is too old for us to try to do anything about changing him now.

“That means that he has now been second in two big handicaps which have been switched from Ascot as he was also second to Ifraaj in the Victoria Cup when that was switched to Lingfield in the spring.

“I knew there was a punt on him in the morning, but I did not get involved as I own a quarter share in him and that is enough for me. But we all knew he was in good form and some of the lads had a go.

“He is in such form that he may well be out again here on Friday. There is another seven-furlong handicap here then and I entered him for it this morning.”

SIXTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
ROSEMARY STAKES (LISTED HANDICAP)

SALAMANCA GAINS DESERVED SUCCESS

Salamanca got her head in front for the first time this season, gaining black type in the process, when capturing the Listed Rosemary Handicap for trainer Sylvester Kirk.

“She really deserved this,” said Kirk. “She turned out to have been a bit short for her first run this season and it put the wrong ideas in our head about ground and trip. But this mile is what she wanted and she deserved to get that black type.

“We’re keeping her for next year and I’ll think about giving her another run this season, if there’s soft ground coming up she’d enjoy that.”

CROWD NEWS

Today’s crowd was 8,040.

Lisa Hancock, managing director of Newmarket Racecourses Trust, said “I am very disappointed with the crowd, especially given that we had fantastic racing staged in glorious autumn weather.

“We were always aware that our intense autumn programme this year, with so much top class racing in such a short period of time, could dilute the attendance.”

NEWMARKET EXPLAINS POSITION REGARDING ANNUAL MEMBERS

The Ascot Festival was not included in the Newmarket Annual Membership package because it was an external fixture, from which Ascot are taking the revenue from television, sponsorship and the Levy Board, with Newmarket’s only source of revenue being from ticket sales and hospitality.

Annual Members were, however, entitled to a £10 discount on Members’ Enclosure admission, plus full use of their reserved facilities once inside. By taking advantage of the 20% Front Runner advance booking discount as well, they were able to purchase a Day Members’ badge for today for £18 (full price £35).

Lisa Hancock, Managing Director of Newmarket Racecourses, said: “We wrote to our Annual Members before the start of the season to explain that we simply could not afford to include the Ascot Festival in the Annual Members’ package this year and I don’t think anyone could complain at that.

“They did, however, benefit from three additional Kempton Park fixtures which were transferred here earlier in the season to which they had free admission as Kempton is part of the RHT group.”

Annual Membership in 2005 cost £275 if booked early and otherwise £300 for 40 racedays (including the three Kempton fixtures) plus several reciprocal racedays at other courses.

GOING NEWS AT 10 AM

The going for the first day of the Ascot Festival at Newmarket is

GOOD

“We had three and a half millimetres of rain between 3pm and 5pm yesterday afternoon, which effectively put us back to where we were on Tuesday,” said clerk of the course Michael Prosser. “Yesterday morning we were just on the quicker side of good.

“The forecast is for a dry day with plenty of sun and a temperature of 17/18 degrees Celcius (65/66 degrees Fahrenheit).

“There may be a few light showers tomorrow morning, with between one and two mills of rain, and there should be a bright afternoon.

“The track has been divided in a similar way to what we did in the spring, except that the dividing rail will be ten metres closer to the stands’ side. That will provide approximately 20 metres of track on the stands’ side where racing today and tomorrow will be run with a maximum field of 20.

“The 30 metres of track on the far side will be used for the Cambridgeshire meeting, which means that the maximum field for the totesport Cambridgeshire will be reduced from 35 to 30.”

BETTING NEWS

The offices have been abuzz with activity all morning, starting with business in the Princess Royal John Doyle Stakes (2.0) at both ends of the market. William Hill report solid support for Ouija Board who is now an 11-10 shot, while the outsider Miss Provvidence has come in from 20-1 to 16-1 with Paddy Power.

Tungsten Strike has taken the public fancy across the board in the toteeexacta Fenwolf Stakes (2.35) with totesport bringing him in from 5-1 to 4-1, Hills shortening him to 3-1 from 5-1 and VC Bet and Paddy Power cutting him by a point from 9-2.

Nasheeb has been popular in the Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile (3.05) and she has attracted solid support with Hills, where she remains an 11-4 shot, and with VC Bet where she has been trimmed from 100-30 to 3-1. In the same race Powers report interest in Alexandrova, whom they have brought in from 5-2 to 9-4.

The totetrifecta Handicap (3.40) has been a real hotbed with money for four of the 18 runners including the race’s talking horse, Moayed, who has been backed at very fancy odds. Paddy Power have slashed him from 20-1 to 12-1, Hills from the same price to 10-1, totesport from 25-1 to 10-1 and VC Bet from 16-1 to 12-1. There has been solid support for King Marju, who is at 5-1 from 13-2 with Hills, at 6-1 from 15-2 with Powers and totesport, and at the same price from 8-1 with VC Bet.

Les Arcs has been in demand in the same race, going from 12-1 to 9-1 with Hills, from the same price to 8-1 with VC Bet and at 10-1 from 12-1 with Powers. VC Bet have also had money for Partners In Jazz, whom they have cut by a point to 8-1, but just to show that it is not all one way traffic Powers have pushed Sea Hunter out from 15-2 to 10-1 and Haunting Memories from 22-1 to 33-1.

Dubawi is a firm favourite for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (4.20) and VC Bet have trimmed him from 7-4 to 13-8, but there has been plenty of interest in Sleeping Indian, who has come in to 14-1 from 16-1 with Hills, from the same price to 12-1 with Powers and VC Bet, and to 14-1 from 18-1 with totesport.

Things have quietened down a bit by the time of the Rosemary Handicap (4.50), but Paddy Power report interest in a couple of outsiders and have brought in Strawberry Dale from 20-1 to 16-1 and Lady Georgina from 33-1 to 28-1.

1) 631 ALEXANDROVA (Sue Magnier, Michael Tabor & Derrick Smith) Aidan O'Brien IRE 2- 8-10 Kieren Fallon [3]
Won by 10 lengths at Tralee in a mile maiden last month but beat little. Third in a Goodwood maiden the time before. Clearly progressing but is shorter odds than she should be. BP= 5/2

2) 31 CROSS CHANNEL (Cliveden Stud) Ed Dunlop 2- 8-10 Steve Drowne [4]
Won an ordinary Newmarket maiden over seven furlongs last time out. The form is nothing out of the ordinary but she could improve over this extra furlong. BP= 5/1

3) 2122 HIGH HEEL SNEAKERS (Mr & Mrs C Wright & Paul Cole) Paul Cole 2- 8-10 Jamie Spencer [5]
Has stayed on strongly in last two runs over a mile and this distance looks a minimum now. Only beaten a length by Naheej last time out at Doncaster in the Group Two May Hill Stakes. BP= 20/1

4) 1531 NANNINA (Cheveley Park Stud) John Gosden 2- 8-10 Jimmy Fortune [2]

5) 1311 NASHEEJ (Malih Al Basti) Richard Hannon 2- 8-10 Richard Hughes [1]
Has progressed up the grades, winning a Group Three and then a Group Two - May Hill Stakes at Doncaster last time out - works hard but may find one too good. BP= 3/1

6) 214122 SALUT D'AMOUR (Michael Tabor) Jeremy Noseda 2- 8-10 Frankie Dettori [6]
Has not run since July when second in the Group Two Cherry Hinton over six furlongs.

CODEBREAKER EVERY FRIDAY

formerly in the Racing Post Weekender

£200,000 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Sponsored by Barclays Bank), (Group One), One Mile

4.20pm NEWMARKET, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2005

Main Trends

Three and four-year-olds have the best record

Horses should have won at least once earlier in the campaign

Good recent form important

Fillies have a poor record overall

Look for previous Group One winners

The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, run at Newmarket this season while Ascot undergoes redevelopment, often decides the mile championship of Europe.

However, there have shocks in recent years with 66/1 chance Maroof successful in 1994 and the 33/1 shot Summoner, thought to be acting as a pacemaker, victorious for Godolphin four years ago.

Even in more ‘normal’ years, the most obvious horses do not always win. Since 1986, only six favourites have won.

Since its inception in 1955, every winner has been aged three or four, bar the five-year-olds Hill Rise in 1966, Falbrav in 2003 and Rakti last year.

This means we must concentrate on the three and four-year-olds, so we first eliminate the six-year-old Blatant. At this stage, it seems wise not to exclude Rakti as he bucked the trend last year and Starcraft, trained by Falbrav’s handler Luca Cumani, is also retained as he was bred in the southern hemisphere and is only four by European standards.

Not surprisingly for a Group One race, good recent form is an absolute prerequisite with 18 of the last 19 victors all having won at least once previously that season.

The only exception was Maroof in 1994 who had managed no better than second place.

Interesting as this trend is, all of the remaining contenders have won at least once this season.

Looking at the last run before the QEII, 17 of the last 19 winners finished in the first four - the exception was Air Express in 1997. Again, all of our contenders achieved this feat.

Fillies have a poor record in this contest but, as all of our remaining horses are colts, this is of little use.

Only Summoner came into the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes having raced less than three times previously during the season, so Rakti, with just two runs to his name this season, is passed over this time round.

Group One winning form seems important, with 11 of the last 19 victors having been previously successful at the very highest level. Neither Mullins Bay or Sleeping Indian is a Group One winner, so they are passed over.

We are now down to two possible winners, Starcraft and Dubawi.

Turning to the issue of age, three-year-olds have the upper hand, accounting for 29 winners compared to 20 victories for older horses. So that means that Dubawi is favoured on that score.

On the other hand, Dubawi just heads the market at present and favourites have a relatively poor record with just six wins since 1986.

The final decision is very difficult, Both Godolphin and Luca Cumani have won the race, with three winners for the Maktoum family’s operation and two for Cumani.

DUBAWI just gets the nod as he is not certain to start favourite and Godolphin’s marginally superior record.
