CAMBRIDGESHIRE MEETING NEWMARKET 2004
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
FIRST DAY, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 30

STALLS MOVED TO CENTRE

The starting stalls will be moved from the far side, where they were placed for today, to the centre of the track for racing tomorrow and on Saturday.

Clerk of the course Michael Prosser explained that he had spoken to a number of trainers, including John Gosden, who were concerned that the far side ground where all the horses raced today, had become poached.

“We have spoken to the stewards’ secretaries and have been told that it is in order to move them to the middle of the course for the next two days,” he said.

Prosser also defended himself against accusations that he had put too much water on the track.

“If we had not watered we were in danger of starting the meeting on firm ground and then it would have been firm for the next two days as well,” he said.

“As it was we put on only about 4 or 5 millimetres of water on the entire track from the mile and six furlong start in view of the forecast, which was that we would have a little rain this morning and then no more after that.

“As it turned out the forecast was wrong, but the fact remains that we had only one non-runner all day because of the state of the ground.”

PREVIEW OF THE SHADWELL STUD MIDDLE PARK STAKES

The Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes is so far missing from Kieren Fallon’s CV, but the champion jockey will be hoping to put that right when he is reunited with John Gosden’s Iceman for tomorrow’s Group One feature at Newmarket.

Iceman is a lazy sort and not the archetypal speed horse, and Fallon had to work hard to stay in touch when Iceman last ran over this six-furlong trip in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, after which he was given a mid-season break.

He returned over the extra furlong for the SGB Champagne Stakes at Doncaster’s St Leger meeting and, despite again being scrubbed along early in the race, he forced his way to the front in the final 150 yards, only to be swallowed up by Etlaala, who showed the better turn of finishing speed to win by half a length, the pair clear.

Gosden’s initial reaction on Town Moor was to wait for the Darley Dewhurst on Champion’s Day at Newmarket, but the Manton maestro, who won this race two years ago with that electric speedball Oasis Dream, has opted to strike while his colt is at the top of his game.

Prince Charming also represents the Gosden stable but, though he bounced back to form to win at Ayr a fortnight ago, that was a Listed race and this is a big jump up in class.

Aidan O’Brien also has two strings to his bow, but stable jockey Jamie Spencer has deserted Russian Blue, who has proved such a solid yardstick at the top level, having been placed in the Phoenix Stakes, the Prix Morny and the Beresford Stakes.

Spencer prefers the unbeaten and relatively unexposed Al Valorem and, though this Danzig colt is also taking a leap up in class, he has done everything asked of him so far and will relish the likely fast ground.

Nick Littmoden is also hoping the rain does not get into the ground for his Flying Childers Stakes winner Chateau Istana, who has never stopped improving through the summer and, though his best form is at five furlongs, the colt was carrying an infection when disappointing over six and has the right attitude to stay the extra distance.

Satchem, transferred from David Loder to Clive Brittain, made a winning debut for his new connections when landing the Group Three Sirenia Stakes at Kempton, prompting the Carlburg trainer to supplement him for this race, while Loder, who won the race twice in the nineties with Bahamian Bounty and Lujain, now relies on Dramaticus, who, like Josh and Rebuttal, who complete the line-up, will need to step up on his form so far.

PREVIEW OF THE TOTESPORT CAMBRIDGESHIRE ON SATURDAY

There has been no obvious draw bias to one side or the other in recent runnings of the totesport Cambridgeshire, so Sir Mark Prescott, encouraged by the fact that Chivalry took this prize for Heath House stables 12 months ago from stall 17, will have been heartened to see ante-post favourite Pedrillo draw 16 for Saturday’s 35-runner cavalry charge.

Pedrillo has been the subject of a monumental gamble, reminiscent of Pasternak, who landed a similar plunge for Prescott seven years ago, and the trainer, who claims they are similar in ability, concedes that his biggest worry has been whether Pedrillo would get into the race.

However, a smooth five-length success at Hamilton earlier this month dispelled those concerns, and Pedrillo, who will be attempting to become the first three-year-old to succeed since Lear Spear in 1998, ticks all the right boxes.

This has been quite a week for Sir Alex Ferguson, who saw his record signing Wayne Rooney fire home a hat-trick on his debut for Manchester United in midweek, and the Old Trafford boss, who has a share in Gatwick with Henry Ponsonby, will be looking to Sam Hitchcott to ice the cake.

Gatwick has solid claims, having had no luck in running when finishing fifth behind Spuradich in the competitive John Smith’s Handicap at Newbury, and he should be thereabouts.

However, on the formbook, Gatwick has a bit to find with Blue Spinnaker, who finished third at Newbury and might even have been second had he not been checked in his run.

St Andrews has more obvious claims than Putra Kuantan of Michael Jarvis’s pair, while there is also a strong local whisper for James Fanshawe’s Ice Palace who, like a lot of the horses prominent in the ante-post market, is drawn towards the far side.

Of the lower numbers one-time classic hope Lundy’s Lane (two), whose trainer, Clive Brittain, won with Braughing 23 years ago, and Paul Cole’s Fine Silver (five), who has been aimed at this race since he chased home Art Trader in the Ladbrokes Handicap at Glorious Goodwood, seem best.

PREVIEW OF KINGDOM OF BAHRAIN SUN CHARIOT STAKES

The dual 1,000 Guineas heroine Attraction will face four rivals when she bids to regain winnning form in the Group One Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes over Newmarket’s Rowley Mile on Saturday.

They are the recent Celebration Mile winner Chic, last year’s Prix de Diane winner Nebraska Tornado, the consistent Irish challenger Miss Mambo and Attraction’s old rival Majestic Desert.

Following her two Guineas triumphs, here in the UltimateBet 1000 Guineas and at the Curragh, and the Coronation Stakes at Ascot, Attraction lost her unbeaten record to Soviet Song in the UAE Equestrian & Racing Federation Falmouth Stakes on the July Course at Newmarket and she again found Soviet Song just too good for her in the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown earlier this month.

That effort put behind her a dismal run in the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville, which her connections attribute entirely to the fact that the ground was too soft.

It was fear of similar conditions which persuaded Mark Johnston to miss last weekend’s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot, and he will be very happy if the going at Newmarket remains good to firm, as it now is.

Chic, who only narrowly avoided a bad fall in scrimmaging at Royal Ascot, has been in fine form of late and overcame problems in running and soft ground to beat Nayyir in the Celebration Mile at Goodwood after her success in the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury. She will make a bold bid for her hat-trick.

The Prix de Diane was one of four wins from five starts for Nebraska Tornado last season, but she has yet to put her nose in front this year. Her best effort has been her fourth to Refuse To Bend in the Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot and she was third in the Prix d’Astarte at Deauville last time.

The Irish challenger Miss Mambo was racing for the first time since early June when beaten half a length in Listed company at the Curragh a fortnight back, having left France to join Dermot Weld in during that time. When she was trained by Eric Libaud she won at Longchamp and Chantilly in April and finished third in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, so she is clearly one to reckon with.

Majestic Desert is admirably consistent and won the Fred Darling at Newmarket in April. She has since been runner-up to Attraction in the Coronation and second in the Prix d’Astarte, so she is no forlorn hope.

Race One: Unicoin Homes Noel Murless Stakes

TUNGSTEN STRIKE EARNS TILT AT CESAREWITCH

The Cambridgeshire Meeting started with a 22-1 shock by Tungsten Strike in the opening Uncoin Homes Noel Murless Stakes and Amanda Perrett will now aim him at the totesport Cesarewitch back here in 16 days time.

Tungsten Strike, who was 18lb “wrong” with odds-on favourite Lost Soldier Three (fourth), made every yard in the rain-softened ground under an enterprising ride from Martin Dwyer, and he simply galloped them into the ground, beating off Carte Diamond coming out of the Dip to win by two lengths.

Mrs Perrett said: “That is owner John Connolly’s first Listed winner and, while Tungsten Strike is a gelding, it is just as pleasurable.

“We made it a real stamina test and it rode more like a two-mile race, and he has outstayed them at the end.

“We took the view that if he was going to win a decent staying handicap it would be the Cesarewitch, but we needed to get a penalty to get him into the race and now we have done that.”

Tungsten Strike has only 7st 4lb for next month’s totesport-sponsored marathon, but the 7lb extra has now virtually guaranteed him a run and both Victor Chandler and Paddy Power cut his Cesarewitch odds to 12-1 from 16-1. Sir Mark Prescott’s No Refuge, who is entered at Longchamp this week-end, is 8-1 favourite.

PLACED QUOTES RACE ONE
UNICOIN HOMES NOEL MURLESS STAKES

NO DISGRACE IN DEFEAT

Carte Diamond may have lost his unbeaten record in the opening Unicoin Noel Murless Stakes, but he was far from disgraced and his connections were anything but downhearted at defeat.

“He has run a smashing race and we are very pleased with him,” enthused Deidre Johnston. “He came to win his race but he doesn’t have the battle experience of the winner and was just worried out of it.

“We still don’t know what his mark is so we have gradually been stepping him up and I don’t know if he will run again this year. We will have a look and see what is on offer, and if there is a suitable race he will go for it. He looks a lovely prospect for next year.”

Looking ahead to Saturday Mrs Johnston is full of optimism about Attraction in the Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes. “She is in grand form and I just hope that there is no more rain,” she said.

Luca Cumani called the defeat of odds on Lost Soldier Three “a typical end of season result, but he has done us proud through the year; it’s very strange ground, but he was beaten a long way out.

“That will be it for the year for him and we shall start again next season.”

GROUND

Two jockeys, Martin Dwyer and Kevin Darley, described the ground as loose on top while two others, John Egan and Richard Hills, thought it was soft.

WINNING QUOTES RACE TWO
ROLLS-ROYCE MOTOR CARS LONDON ROUS STAKES

NIGHTS CROSS AT LAST

After a frustrating season when he has run well on a number of occasions without managing a win, Nights Cross finally got his head in front when he caught Norwegian challenger Steve’s Champ near the line in the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars London Rous Stakes to win by half a length.

“He deserved that, he’s such a solid horse, but I shouldn’t have run him at Deauville last time as the ground was like a bog,” said the colt’s trainer Mick Channon.

“He is in the horses in training sale next month so I don’t know about plans for him. I don’t really want to sell him but he has to go through the ring and that is that.

“His owners, the Ridgway Downs Racing Syndicate, have been very lucky this year and they have also won races with Joint Aspiration and Tournedos this season.”

Channon, who arrived at Newmarket not long before the race from the yearling sales in Ireland where “we bought a few dreams -- if you didn’t dream you would never get involved”-- has high hopes for his totesport Cambridgeshire hope Gatwick and was delighted that a bit of rain has come to ease the ground.

NORWEGIAN RAIDER PIPPED CLOSE HOME

Steve’s Champ, one of the best two-year-olds in Chile until he was bought by Norwegian trainer Rune Haugen last winter, came close to springing a 12-1 surprise for Scandinavia in the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars London Rous Stakes, blazing the trail from the start and only being reeled in close home to be beaten half a length by Nights Cross.

Haugen, who will bring Steve’s Champ back to Newmarket in 15 days time for the Group 3 Bentinck Stakes, was justifiably proud of Steve’s Champ who, ultimately, was beaten by the 7lb penalty he incurred for winning the Taby Sprint in his homeland.

He said: “It was a combination of the penalty and the rain, Steve’s Champ has incredible early speed and if the race had been run yesterday they would not have got to him.

“He has won us a Group Three and two Listed races since we bought him, amassing more than £100,000 in prize money.

“We’ll definitely come back and, though the Bentinck is over six furlongs, that is not a problem, because Steve’s Champ won over seven and a half in Santiago.

“His three wins in Chile were on the dirt, so we might well consider taking him to Dubai for the Winter Carnival. They have a programme of five-furlong races on the dirt, as well as some over six on the turf, so it could well suit him out there.”

Baltic King, the 5-2 favourite, finished only third, and James Stafford, who heads the Thurloe Thoroughbreds syndicate, said: “That was a bit disappointing, but the ground is much faster on the strip next to the far rails and, considering we were racing on the slower ground, it was a fair run.”

Race Three: Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes
Win quotes

MAGICAL ROMANCE IS A 40-1 STUNNER

Magical Romance, who won a nursery off a mark of 83 at Leicester just 10 days ago, left punters scratching their heads in disbelief when producing a shock 40-1 success in the Group One Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes, in which little more than a length covered the first five home.

Suez tried to make all and was always holding the challenge of odds-on favourite Damson, but Robert Winston, deputising for the injured Jimmy Fortune, galvanized the Brian Meehan-trained Magical Romance up the hill and in a blanket finish they got home by a neck and the same.

It was only in the spring that Winston, who also rode the filly at Leicester, clocked up his first Pattern race win on Golden Nun in Ireland, but Magical Romance was his first at the highest level.

He said: “Magical Scope has plenty of scope, and she will get a mile next year. She has bags of class and was very professional. She lost her legs a bit coming out of the Dip, but when she met the rising ground she put down her head and battled all the way to the line. I feel sorry for Jimmy, but I’m obviously delighted for myself.”

Magical Romance had finished last behind Soar in the Princess Margaret Stakes so, with James Fanshawe’s filly, who had suffered an interrupted preparation, finishing a well-beaten sixth here, there was a massive turnaround in form.

However, Meehan was not as dumbfounded as most formbook students. He said: “My filly came back from Ascot jarred up, and that was obviously not her form. I feel for Jimmy, who has been riding most of ours and has been putting himself out to make himself available.

“But Robert rode the filly at Leicester and got to know her, and he has ridden a terrific race. Leicester gave Magical Romance a great confidence-boost, and I feel she is a Guineas filly in the making, She wobbled at the top of the hill, but that was through inexperience.”

Magical Romance was cut to 25-1 with Corals and to 20-1 with Paddy Power, but bookmakers remain totally mystifed as to how to price up the UltimateBet.com 2000 Guineas at this stage, with Corals quoting last week’s Ascot Fillies’ Mile winner Playful Act and French filly Divine Proportions as 10-1 equal favourites. Damson, who was market-leader going into the race, has been eased to 8-1 from 12-1.

PLACED QUOTES RACE THREE
SKY BET CHEVELEY PARK STAKES

NO EXCUSES

It was a somewhat ironic result as far as Michael Jarvis was concerned as though his filly Suez proved too good for odds on Damson, she was caught near the line and beaten a neck by the 40-1 chance Magical Romance.

Jarvis had seen the winning filly score at Leicester last time and had been very impressed by her. “She looked very good that day and certainly wasn’t a 40-1 shot this afternoon,” he said.

The trainer was delighted with Suez’ display after she had led from the start till the winner headed her. “She won’t run again this year and as far as next year’s Guineas is concerned I do not know how far she will stay as she has so much speed. I wish the rain hadn’t come as I am sure that did not help her.”

David Wachman had no excuses for the apparently disappointing run by Damson, who was a neck behind the runner-up in third.

“She just did not go through the final furlong after coming with a run that made it look as if she could win the race,” he said.

“I am sure it was not the distance, so maybe it is just the end of a long season for her.

“I still hope she will stay the mile next year and she won’t run again this year. It is rather back to the drawing board with her.”

WINNING QUOTES RACE FOUR
SOMERVILLE TATTERSALL STAKES

DIKTATORIAL FOR ULTIMATEBET.COM 2000 GUINEAS

Diktatorial, described by his trainer Andrew Balding as “a genuine Guineas horse”, was given a 40-1 quote by Paddy Power for next year’s first classic, which is sponsored again by UltimateBet.com, following his success in the Group Three Somerville Tattersall Stakes.

“He is still a big baby but that was by far the most professional he has been so far,” said Balding after Diktatorial had made much of the running to hold off Crimson Sun by a neck and complete a 91-1 double for Martin Dwyer after his success in the opener on Tungsten Strike.

“He has taken a long time to learn things and anything new seemed to upset him, so we sent him to ‘Yarmie’ Dyble for a week and that helped him a lot,” said the trainer.

And James Stafford, who runs the Thurloe part of the Tweenhills Thurloe partnership which owns the colt, related how when Diktatorial was due to be schooled through stalls before he had run he was caught in a rainstorm and refused to go anywhere near them.

“That’s why he had his first run in a conditions race when there were only a few runners and we hoped he wouldn’t have to be in the stalls too long, but as it happened he went in first and was in for 10 minutes.

“David Redvers of Tweenhills bought him on spec as a yearling and, when he could not find an owner, my brother-in-law Oliver said that he would take him, but in the end David and I put together two halves of the syndicate and called in Tweenhills Thurloe.”

Andrew Balding continued by saying “I am sure he will improve and improve; he has a very big engine,” while a few weeks ago he and his father Ian referred to the colt as “a raw version of Passing Glance.”

The colt will not run again this year with connections having decided not to supplement him for next month’s Darley Dewhurst Stakes.

They have also turned down a number of six figure offers for the colt and anyone who wants to made a bid now will have to put up substantially more, and even then there is no guarantee it wouldbe
e successful.

Race Four: Somerville Tattersall Stakes
Place quotes

CRIMSON SUN “BETTER NEXT YEAR”

Saeed bin Suroor, delighted with the plucky effort of Crimson Sun, who was beaten only a neck by Diktatorial in the Group Three Somerville Tattersall Stakes, insisted that “he will be a better horse next year.”

Crimson Sun had got stuck in the mud when running disappointingly behind Tony James in the Gimcrack Stakes at York last time, and he was clearly much happier on this faster ground.

Bin Suroor added: “Crimson Sun improved on this ground and, while I am making no excuses, he will be a better three-year-old.

“He still needs to learn to settle. He was keen early on, but he should mature through the winter and I am sure that he will be more relaxed when he returns from Dubai next year.”

William Muir was equally pleased with Mister Genepi (33-1), who finished best of all in third, only a short-head behind Crimson Sun.

Muir said: “He was only that price because he was trained by William Muir. I have always said that he was a good horse, and he will now go for a £14,000 maiden auction at York on October 9 over a mile which will sui him better.”

DOYEN POSSIBLE FOR NEWMARKET

Doyen, expected to be roughed off for the season after disappointing in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown last time, may yet run again, possibly in the Emirtaes Airline Champion Stakes at Newmarket next month.

Saeed bin Suroor, the Godolphin trainer, stressed today that “all plans are fluid” but added that Doyen, so impressive when winning the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot in July, could well run again this year.

He said: “We are still mystified as to what went wrong in Ireland. I had my doubts beforehand about bringing him back in distance, but he would not have won at any trip, so that could not have been the reason.

“We are looking at several options for Doyen, the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes back here, the Breeders’ Cup Turf or maybe the Japan Cup, which is a race that I feel would suit him. He would also be likely to get his ground there.

“Sulamani is likely to be our representative in the Canadian International at Woodbine and he could also go to Dallas for the Breeders’ Cup, where Crimson Palace, who has stayed over since winning the Beverley D in Chicago in August, is likely to run in the Filly & Mare Turf.”

Race Five: NGK Spark Plugs Nursery

OBE GOLD HAS BOOKIES SMILING

It will be the bookmakers rather than the punters who will be heading for the champagne bar tonight, Obe Gold (20-1) having hammered another nail into the punters’ coffins when running out a surprise winner of the NGK Spark Plugs Nursery.

The layers had already celebrated a 40-1 shock with Magical Romance and a 22-1 stunner with Tungsten Strike, and they were smiling again after Tony Culhane had completed a 251-1 double for Mick Channon and Tony Culhane, earlier successful with Nights Cross, when making most to hold off Elgin Marbles by a length and three-quarters.

Channon said: “Obe Gold deserved that win. He ‘won a Group Three in Milan in June but was disqualified, and since then nothing has gone right.

“His Doncaster form is decent - Galeota, the winner, followed up in the Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury - and he is a horse with plenty of toe. We’ll see how he is, but we might have a look at the big two-year-old race at Redcar on Saturday.”

Richard Hannon, who trains Elgin Marbles, said: “He kept after Mick’s horse in the final furlong, but he was never really going to get there. The winner had got first run - that’s the way it goes. He has run a decent race.”

WINNING QUOTES RACE SIX
JRA GOLDEN JUBILEE MAIDEN STAKES

LONGEST PRICED WINNER OF THE SEASON

Pevensey produced the shock of the season at Newmarket, not just the shock of the day when he won the JRA Golden Jubilee Maiden Stakes at 50-1 in the hands of Kevin Darley, compensating his owners Jumeirah Racing for the defeat of their Elgin Marbles in the previous nursery.

“What a difference this rain has made to the ground,” said his trainer John Gosden after the gelding had beaten Salinja by a neck with favourite Clueless in third.

On the face of it the softened ground should not have suited the winner, who is a son of Danehill, but the trainer pointed out that “his dam was a soft ground mare and his half brother won twice over a mile and a quarter in the soft in France.

“That will be his game next year,” added Gosden as he explained how Pevensey “had been working very well at home, but when he went to Pontefract last time he was very badly behaved and if there were 12 runners he tried to cover 11 of them down at the start.

“Jimmy (Fortune) felt that he was a danger as he was, so when he came home the first thing we did was to have his wedding tackle off and he has been much better behaved ever since.

As a result of this Pevensey’s lad is now in line for a week’s holiday for two in the Canaries, an award sponsored by horse feed firm Creature Comforts for the lad or girl who looks after the longest-priced winner of the year at Headquarters.

Looking ahead to tomorrow Gosden is seriously concerned about the state of the ground for his Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes fancy Iceman.

“We came here for good to firm ground and now it is on the soft side, “ he said.
“I am seriously worried and tomorrow morning I shall walk the course and talk about it with Kieren (Fallon) and the Cheveley Park connections to decide what we will do.”

Race Six: JRA Golden Jubilee Maiden Stakes
Place quotes

PUNTERS CLUELESS AS
ANOTHER FAVOURITE IS BEATEN

Owner Bill Gredley remains enthusiastic about the future of Clueless, despite the 9-4 favourite being yet another “jolly” to bite the dust in the JRA Golden Jubilee Maiden Stakes.

Kieren Fallon was scrubbing along some way from home but, though he ran on well up the hill, he failed by a neck and a length and a quarter to overhaul Pevensey and Salinja.

Gredley said: “Kieren was impressed and told me that I had a lovely horse with a great attitude and that I should put him away until next year. I don’t think Clueless was happy on the rain-softened ground.”

Race Seven: Newmarket Racecourses Fillies’ Handicap

PARADISE ISLE DEFIES TOP WEIGHT
IN FINALE

Punters were taking a pounding with a string of long-priced winners, and those who tried to “get out” with odds-on shot Solar Power in the Newmarket Racecourses Fillies’ Handicap only succeeded in getting themselves in deeper trouble when the “jolly” was beaten half a length by 14-1 shot Paradise Isle in the finale.

Paradise Isle, who bolted up at the Shergar Cup meeting at Ascot in August, produced a smart performance for a three-year-old to concede 16lb to Solar Power, much to the delight of Andy Shaw, assistant to trainer Chris Wall, who is in Japan saddling stable-star Ashdown Express for a big sprint there on Sunday.

Shaw said: “Paradise Isle is a tough filly, who was handicapped by a bad draw at Ascot last time. We were worried about the rain, but she won really well and now we will have to look for some black type.

“She stays in training next year, but there is also a Group Thre (Bentinck Stakes) here at the next meeting, and she might well run there.”

Shaw added that Ashdown Express, who almost pulled off a 50-1 surprise when chasing home Frizzante in the Darley July Cup on the other Newmarket course during the summer, is in great form for his big day but that the ground was concerning connections.

He said: “Chris rang to say that they were having monsoons out there and that is no good to Ashdown Express. However, the horse worked on the track this morning and the ground is not too bad, so if they don’t get too much more rain we might get away with it.”

CHANGE OF GOING

The going was changed to

GOOD, GOOD TO SOFT IN PLACES

after the third race.

GOING CHANGE

Following this morning’s rain the ground on the Rowley Mile is now

GOOD, GOOD TO FIRM IN PLACES

at 12.30pm.

GOING NEWS AT 10.30 AM

The going for the first day of the Cambridgeshire meeting is

GOOD TO FIRM,

with a going stick measurement of 8.3, which means that the ground is slightly drier than it was yesterday.

“We have had 0.2 of a millimetre of rain, just enough to dampen the dust, by 10.30 this morning, but more is forecast,” said clerk of the course Michael Prosser.

“There will be about two millimetres but this should blow away by lunchtime and leave us with a bright and sunny afternoon with a temperature of 18 degrees Celcius (66 degrees Fahrenheit).

“The long range forecast is that tomorrow will start bright but then cloud over with between 1 and 2 millimetres of rain between 7pm and 9pm, and that Saturday will be dry.

“We stopped watering at lunchtime on Tuesday and shall not be doing any more.

“The stalls will be on the far side for all races on the straight course and in the middle for the long distance events; there have been no rail movements.”

FORTUNE AND McEVOY OUT OF ACTION

Jimmy Fortune (injured) and Kerrin McEvoy (unwell) will not be riding at Newmarket this afternoon.

BETTING NEWS

Although Damson is inevitably a warm order for this afternoon’s Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes (2.25) - she is a 4-5 chance with William Hill - there are plenty of punters prepared to take her on and the feature of this morning’s business has been the support for the Lowther Stakes winner Soar, who is clearly fancied to turn round the Queen Mary Stakes form with the favourite.

So much so that both Paddy Power and Victor Chandler have brought the Cheveley Park Stud’s filly from 9-2 to 7-2. Powers also report interest in Jewel in the Sand from 14-1 to 12-1, but Suez is very weak with them and they have pushed her out from 5-2 to 3-1.

Powers have also cut Subpoena from 15-8 to 13-8 for the Somerville Tattersall Stakes (3.30) - both they and Chandlers quote Sheikh Mohammed’s colt at 25-1 for next year’s UltimateBet.com 2000 Guineas - and in the NGK Spark Plugs Nursery Royal Orissa has been trimmed from 11-1 to 10-1.

They have also done lively business in the JRA Golden Jubilee Maiden Stakes (4.05) over Given A Choice and have slashed his odds from 10-1 to 6-1.

CAMBRIDGESHIRE MEETING
INFORMATION PACK

The new-look Cambridgeshire Meeting on Newmarket's Rowley Mile Racecourse runs from Thursday to Saturday, September 30 - October 2, and, with a third Group One race now part of the programme for the first time, it promises three outstanding days of racing this year with a record £1,118,000 in prize money on offer.

Last year the meeting was streamlined into three days from the old four-day format, greatly enhancing the overall quality. This year the Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes on Saturday, October 2 has been upgraded to Group One status, adding an exciting new focus to the final day where it will top the billing alongside the totesport Cambridgeshire. There is now a Group One race on each day.

Today features the Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes (Group One), in which this season's star juvenile fillies, Damson, Soar and Suez, look set for a mouthwatering showdown. The strong supporting card includes the Somerville Tattersall Stakes (Group Three), the Unicoin Homes Noel Murless Stakes (Listed) and the Rolls Royce Motor Cars London Rous Stakes (Listed).

Tomorrow features the Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes (Group One), in which Aidan O'Brien's promising colt Ad Valorem may put his unbeaten record on the line against the unbeaten Richmond Stakes winner, Montogomery's Arch, and the Coventry Stakes winner, Iceman.

Saturday features the Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes (Group One), in which the brilliant dual Guineas winner, Attraction, will seek to get back to winning ways against the improving Chic, and one of the season's highest class, most historic and competitive handicaps, the totesport Cambridgeshire. The totesport Cambridgeshire is the first leg of the totesport Autumn Double which involves a bonus of £100,000 and culminates with the totesport Cesarewitch on Champions' Day at Newmarket two weeks later (Saturday, October 16). The supporting card includes the Finnforest Oh So Sharp Stakes (Listed).

● Baronet, trained at Epsom by John Benstead, was something of a Cambridgeshire specialist. In addition to winning the handicap in 1978 and 1980, he was also second in 1977 and 1981.

● Pullover caused the biggest shock ever in the Cambridgeshire when winning at 100/1 in 1932, while the shortest-priced horse to be successful was the 11/10 shot Polymelus in 1906.

● In more recent times, the biggest shocks have come with the 50/1 shots Braughing (1981) and Balthus (1987), while the 2001 hero I Cried For You was returned at 33/1.

● Since the war only seven favourites have been triumphant, the last being the Sir Mark Prescott-trained Pasternak in 1997 who went off at 4/1, landing a huge gamble.

● Among current trainers, the most successful is Jeremy Glover who has sent out the victor on four occasions (Balthus 1987, Rambo’s Hall 1989 & 1992 and Clifton Fox 1996). Sir Mark Prescott is next in line with three winners (Quinlan Terry 1988, Pasternak 1997 and Chivalry 2003).

● Three of Jeremy Glover’s Cambridgeshire heroes were partnered by Dean McKeown, making him and George Duffield (who won on all three of Sir Mark Prescott’s winners) the most successful current jockeys in the contest.

● The highest weight carried to victory in the post-war period was the 9st 10lb shouldered by the Roger Charlton-trained Cap Juluca in 1995.

● On the other hand, Esquire won with the featherweight of 6st 3lb in 1945.

● There have been two dead-heats during the race’s history - Medal & Niantic (1927) and Violetta III & Henry The Seventh (1961).

THE totesport AUTUMN DOUBLE

The totesport Cambridgeshire, run over nine furlongs on Saturday, October 2, and the totesport Cesarewitch, double the length at two and a quarter miles on Saturday, October 16, form the totesport Autumn Double.

This year’s £100,000 totesport Autumn Double means that trainers are keener than ever to do well in both races which are among the biggest betting events of the year.

A magnificent £100,000 bonus (£70,000 to the stable staff, £30,000 to the trainer) is on offer to any stable which can win both legs of the 2004 totesport Autumn Double and this is in addition to the tremendous prize money - £130,000 each - for the totesport Cambridgeshire and totesport Cesarewitch.

Sir Mark Prescott tried to land the totesport Autumn Double in 2003, the first year the bonus was offered. After his Chivalry won the totesport Cambridgeshire, the Heath House handler had two runners in the totesport Cambridgeshire, but they could only finish 11th and 18th.

There are five trainers with runners/entries in both handicaps Mick Channon, Michael Jarvis, Jeremy Noseda,, Sir Mark Prescott and Mark Tompkins. There were 19 at the entry stage.

totesport, as part of their Autumn Double Bonus, have invited epresentatives from each yard that entered in both the totesport Cambridgeshire and the totesport Cesarewitch to enjoy a day's racing and hospitality at Newmarket on Saturday. The stable staff from some of the top yards in the country will be hosted by totesport in the Sponsors' Lounge.

Joe Scanlon Managing Director of totesport, said: “The tote recognises the hard work and huge contribution, from so many people that goes on behind the scenes in racing. In celebration of this and in keeping with the £100,000 totesport Autumn Double Bonus, we wanted to entertain the people who work tirelessly within the industry. We hope that they enjoy their day. “

Lisa Hancock Newmarket's Managing Director said: “We are very pleased that the tote are again offering the Autumn Double Bonus that, if won, will be split £30,000 to the trainer and £70,000 to the stable staff. We hope that they enjoy their day's racing at Newmarket this Saturday.”

Inaugurated in 1966, the Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes commemorates King George VI’s great mare Sun Chariot, heroine of the wartime 1000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger in 1942 when all of the classics were run at Newmarket.

Prior to 1974, the race was confined to three-year-old fillies and was run as a Group Two contest up until this year, when it is upgraded to Group One status.

Generally the contest has been won by fillies just short of the absolute best although there have been some very notable exceptions.

The best winners included Time Charter (1982) who was also successful in the Oaks at Epsom that season and went on to land the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot the following year. Similarly, Cormorant Wood (1983) went on to greater glory, landing the Juddmonte International at York in 1984.

The outstanding grey mare Indian Skimmer was successful in 1988 and won a total of three Group One contests during her career, which included the Champion Stakes at Newmarket later in the month.

By far the most successful trainer is Luca Cumani. The Italian has saddled six winners of the the Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes - Free Guest (1984 and 1985), Infamy (1987), Red Slippers (1992), One So Wonderful (1997) and Kissogram (1998). One So Wonderful and Infamy proved to be the best of his winners, with the former going on to land the Juddmonte International at York the following season while Infamy won the Grade One Rothmans International at Woodbine, Canada in 1988. Similarly the 1989 winner Braiswick went on to top success in Canada, landing the Grade One E P Taylor Stakes at Woodbine.

Several winners have also gone on to significant success as broodmares, most notably 1981 scorer Home On The Range, who produced the 1987 Derby hero Reference Point.

A SHORT HISTORY OF
THE SKY BET CHEVELEY PARK STAKES

The Cheveley Park Stakes, sponsored for the second time in 2004 by Sky Bet, was first run in 1870 and the Group One contest over six furlongs has proved a major pointer to the following season's classics in its 134-year history.

In the first half of the last century, for example, its winners included Pretty Polly, Fifinella and Light Brocade, all of whom went on to classic glory, as well as Selene, who became the dam of Hyperion.

Since the Second World War the race has fallen to fillies like Fleet, Humble Duty, Waterloo and Mrs Penny and, in more recent years, Marwell and her daughter Marling, Ma Biche and Ravinella have hit the high spots in their second seasons.

The last Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes winner to go on to classic success was Sayyedati, who won in 1992 for Clive Brittain and Walter Swinburn. She won the 1000 Guineas the next year and the Sussex Stakes as a five-year-old and gave a second success in the race for her jockey, who had also won on Marling in the previous year.

Sir Michael Stoute, who trained Gay Gallanta, was also responsible for the 2000 winner Regal Rose, but the outstanding training record in recent seasons is that of Criquette Head-Maarek, who sent out Ma Biche to win in 1982 and has followed that with Ravinella in 1987 and Pas De Reponse in 1996.

The suggestion that fillies are unpredictable is not really borne out by the Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes results. There have been long-priced winners, like the 20/1 Embla in 1985 and Gay Gallanta, who went off at 14/1, but since then only the 10/1 Seazun (the first of two winners for Mick Channon), has scored at a double-figure price.

Although the winners inevitably attract most post-race attention it can often pay to look a bit further back with an eye on the future. In 1994 Harayir, who won the 1000 Guineas some six months later, was third behind Gay Gallanta. Five years after that Crimplene, who won the Irish and German 1,000 Guineas as well as the Coronation and Nassau Stakes the following season, was third to Seazun and in 2002 the superb Russian Rhythm went down to Airwave

Last year’s renewal went to Carry On Katie, giving trainer Jeremy Noseda his second success following Wannabe Grand in 1998 and also providing Frankie Dettori with a second win, after Regal Rose in 2000.

A SHORT HISTORY OF THE SHADWELL STUD MIDDLE PARK STAKES

The Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes, first run in 1866, is the senior of the three Group One two-year-old races run at the Cambridgeshire Meeting and on Champions’ Day at Newmarket and, as befits this status, it has a history of top-class winners.

In 1903 the winner was the outstanding Pretty Polly, who also took the Cheveley Park Stakes in the same season, and other subsequent classic winners to have won the Middle Park in the first half of the last century were Bayardo, Lemberg, Call Boy and Dante, and later on Right Tack, Brigadier Gerard and Known Fact appeared on its roll of honour.

The 2002 winner Oasis Dream developed into the leading European sprinter the following season, gaining Group One victories in the Darley July Cup at Newmarket and the Nunthorpe Stakes at York.

The most recent Middle Park hero to go on to classic glory was Rodrigo De Triano, whose 2000 Guineas and Champion Stakes successes with Lester Piggott in 1992 were one of the great stories of his jockey's amazing career.

Lester did not ride Rodrigo de Triano in the Middle Park - Willie Carson was the man on top that day - but he has more than left his mark on this race with six successes, from Petingo in 1967 to Diesis in 1982.

It has also been a good race for Pat Eddery, who gained one of the last big race wins of his career last year. His quintet of winners began with Habat in 1973 and, since then, he has scored on Formidable in 1977, Bassenthwaite in 1984, Primo Valentino in 1999 and Balmont last year. However, Balmont’s win was not gained in conventional fashion.

The Jeremy Noseda-trained colt was awarded the race after the first horse past the post, Three Valleys, was subsequently found to have a banned substance in a post-race sample.

Habat and Formidable were trained by Peter Walwyn, who was also successful with Stalker in 1985 and those three wins in the race just give him the nod over David Loder, Aidan O'Brien, Henry Cecil and the late David Morley, who have all won it twice.

The first of Morley's two winners was Fard, who went in at 33/1 in 1994, and in spite of the fact that top-level racing is meant to be relatively predictable, his long-priced success is not unusual in the Middle Park's recent history.

Creag-an-Sgor was a 50/1 shot when he was one of Steve Cauthen's four winners of the race in 1983. Another 33/1 shot, Mister Majestic, owned by the well know jumps patron David Johnson, struck gold three years later and Balla Cove went off at 20/1 in 1989.

In contrast, there have been plenty of short-priced winners as well. The Aidan O'Brien/Mick Kinane duo of Minardi (2000) and Johannesburg (2001) were both odds-on shots, and David Loder's pair Lujain (1998) and Bahamian Bounty (1996) went off at 8/11 and 7/4 respectively.
