PREVIEW OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II STAKES
Soviet Song attempts to bridge a 17-year gap by becoming the first filly since Milligram in 1987 to win the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (sponsored by Netjets) at Ascot tomorrow (Saturday).
That was the year in which this prestigious race was promoted to Group One status, and it resulted in a clean sweep for the fairer sex, with Milligram beating the mighty Miesque, and Sonic Lady taking third.
James Fanshawe reports Soviet Song as being none the worse for her exertions at Leopardstown a fortnight ago, when she confirmed her Group One Falmouth Stakes (Newmarket) superiority over dual Guineas heroine Attraction in the Group One Matron Stakes.
Attraction has opted out of a third clash, connections fearing rain, but Johnny Murtagh, who has found the key to getting the best out of Soviet Song, has no worries about the going.
He said: “Good horses go on any ground, and Soviet Song has proved she is just that by winning on all types of surfaces. She picked up really well in the Matron and seems to have retained her form, and the break that James gave her after the Sussex Stakes (Group One, Goodwood) seems to have done her good.”
Soviet Song is the only filly in the 14-strong field, and she looks to be guaranteed the fast gallop that suits her so well as Godolphin have declared Blatant to make the pace for their Eclipse winner Refuse To Bend, though punters will need no reminding that Summoner, undertaking similar responsibilities for the boys in blue in this race three years ago, kept up the relentless gallop to spring a 33-1 surprise.
However, Frankie Dettori, who landed his first Group One in this race on Markofdistinction 14 years ago and has since followed up on Mark of Esteem (1996) and Dubai Millennium (1999), is hopeful that the stiff uphill finish will bring the best out of Refuse To Bend, who never ran his race in the Sussex Stakes.
The French have not triumphed since Bigstone in 1993, but Andre Fabre is uncharacteristically bullish about the chances of Diamond Green, who will relish the likely fast ground and has been a model of consistency at the top level this summer.
Norse Dancer looked like gaining a long-overdue big-race success when he struck the front at the furlong-pole in the Irish Champion Stakes and, while Azamour came from last to first to cut him down close home, David Elsworth has no qualms about coming back in distance with Norse Dancer, pointing to the great race that his luckless colt ran in last year’s Two Thousand Guineas.
Rakti, a big disappointment in the Leopardstown feature, runs over a mile for the first time and, though the shorter trip is a worry, it certainly won’t be a problem for 2,000 Guineas winner Haafhd who, like so many of Barry Hills’s horses, lost his way midsummer, nor Aidan O’Brien’s unbeaten and relatively unexposed colt Ace, whom stable jockey Jamie Spencer prefers to the enigmatic Antonius Pius.
GROUND NOW GOOD TO FIRM ALL OVER
Clerk of the course Nick Cheyne has amended the official going to
GOOD TO FIRM
all over for the second day of Ascot’s Finale tomorrow, which features four Group races, headed by the £250,000 Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.
Speaking after racing on Friday, Cheyne said: “The wind has dried up the ground and so I have changed it to Good to Firm all round.
“The forecast has changed and they are now talking about rain arriving with us about 2pm, with predictions that we might get anything between three and six millimetres during racing.”
CHEYNE LOOKS BACK
Nick Cheyne is officiating at the Ascot Finale meeting for the final time in his role as clerk of the course as he is about to leave Ascot to take up the newly-created position of client relations manager at Weatherbys.
“I am very much looking forward to my new job which will involve being Weatherbys’ representative on all racecourse matters, in particular their sponsorship which runs to more than 80 races on 55 tracks, representing the firm at Newmarket and Doncaster sales and helping to organise open days for owners and trainers.
“And there will be a second role of recruiting business for their commercial ventures like banking, insurance and printing with clients inside and outside racing.
“I have worked at Ascot for 11 years and officiated at 10 Royal meetings and I have had a wonderful time. It is the top job in racing as far as clerks of the course are concerned and I was able to come here after six or seven years at Sandown.
“When I came to Ascot, Nicky Beaumont had been here for 30 years and I was expecting that I might do the same, but things change in racing and at my age offers of new jobs do not come along that often!
“I am sorry to be leaving Ascot at the time of the big new redevelopment plan, which is all very exciting, but that is just the way things have worked out. I shall be watching it with great interest.
“I shall leave Ascot with many great memories, especially of Frankie’s “Magnificent Seven”. That was an unbelievable day with the atmosphere building up all the time and the hype getting greater and greater. To do what he did on such a high profile day as that was quite remarkable.
“Part of my remit in the last three years has been to try to attract runners from overseas and it was really exciting when Choisir, the first horse from Australia to run here, won the King’s Stand Stakes on the first day of Royal Ascot last year and then followed up with the Golden Jubilee on the Saturday.
“I have also been trying to get the Americans to send over their middle distance horses - they had run some sprinters and milers in the past - and I was delighted when Hard Buck came and ran so well in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes this summer.
“I think we may have turned the corner with that; his connections are very keen to come back and run in the race again when it is at Newbury next year, and I would like to think that others from there will follow.
“And there have been some great days with the jumpers. I have seen some wonderful Victor Chandler Chases and I was delighted to be able to launch the new Grade One two and a half mile Ascot Chase when Martha’s Son won the first running.
“I have been very fortunate to have been at Ascot for 11 tremendous years and shall leave with many happy memories when the course is embarking on its very exciting new development.”
FRANKIE TO GET THE FIRST POSITION POST
ASCOT MEMORABILIA WILL BE ON SALE
ASCOT TURF FOR COLLECTION
Frankie Dettori will be presented with Ascot’s first position post (from the winner’s enclosure) after the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes tomorrow.
The course is closing for the £185-million redevelopment after racing on Sunday, September 26, and will be racing again at Royal Ascot in June, 2006.
Nick Cheyne, Ascot’s clerk of the course and director of racing, will hand the post over to Dettori, who has enjoyed so many big-race victories at Ascot and achieved the record-breaking magnificent seven in 1996, as well as the first winner today after which he went over and kissed the first position post.
The jockey will lend the post back to Ascot for the rest of Saturday and Sunday, receiving it by courier on Monday.
Before the demolition of the grandstands starts, Ascot is employing 600 people on Monday to take out all items that could be re-used or are of interest.
These will be logged and re-used if appropriate, with the rest auctioned off in the spring, with equine and racing charities benefiting.
The turf in the winner’s enclosure will be removed and divided into pieces and made available, free of charge though donations to charity will be accepted, to people who want an Ascot memento between 10am on Tuesday, September 28 until 4pm on Wednesday, September 29 in Car Park One.
BETTING NEWS
Paddy Power clients are rowing in with a “home” win for today’s feature race, the Group 3 Princess Royal John Doyle Stakes, with Michael Grassick’s Cork victor My Renee, the winner of a Listed 12-furlong race here 12 months ago, all the rage.
Tony Coleman, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “My Renee is far and away the best backed horse of the day with us and, even allowing for the fact that we had to tighten up the prices following the withdrawal of Bowstring this morning, she has been a hefty order and is now 5-2 favourite from 100-30.”
Corals also report good money for My Renee (5-2 from 3-1), but the most significant mover with the Barking firm has been for The Queen’s Border Castle in the Sodexho European Breeders Fund Classified Stakes and he has hardened as favourite to 7-4 (from 2-1).
Oasis Star has been the early mover with Skybet for the PriceWaterhouseCoopers Handicap and has been cut to 9-2 (from 6-1), while Peter Harris’s filly has also been clipped a point to 5-1 with Corals, though Paddy Power have seen money in this race for both Bentley’s Ball (12-1 from 14-1) and Brave Maestro (14-1 from 20-1).
Kodiac, the mount of Frankie Dettori in the West End & Metropolitan Ltd Handicap, is the buzz colt for the finale, being reduced to 4-1 (from 9-2) with Paddy Power and to 7-2 (from 9-2) with Corals.
Simon Clare of Corals reported on tomorrow’s the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. He said: “The money all week has come for Soviet Song and, despite the fact that this looks the hottest QEII since Maroof hammered eight Group One winners in 1994, she is the one everyone wants to be on and she is now a firm 5-2 favourite (from 3-1).”
Paddy Power, who have had interest for both Refuse to Bend (11-2 from 6-1) and Rakti (9-1 from 10-1) for tomorrow’s showpiece, report a significant ante-post move for Free Trip (8-1 from 9-1) in the totejackpot On Saturday Handicap.
Race One: Sodexho EBF Classified Stakes
NO STOPPING FRANKIE
Destination Dubai has, by Saeed bin Suroor’s own admission, been disappointing since he gave Aussie ace Kerrin McEvoy his first British winner at Haydock in May, but Frankie Dettori rekindled the flame and rewarded his followers with a 9-1 winner in the opening Sodexho EBF Classified Stakes.
The 10lb concession proved just too much for topweight Courageous Duke, and Destination Dubai, enterprisingly ridden by Dettori, held him at bay by half a length, with Impeller a highly creditable third.
Dettori, increasing his lead over Fallon at the top of the jockeys’ table to three, kissed the number one marker on dismounting, and bin Suroor praised the Italian for a fine ride.
Bin Suroor said: “Destination Dubai started to sweat and worry and get very upset after that first win at Haydock, so we decided to get him relaxed up the front end and Frankie gave him a super ride.
“We will look for something better at the back-end, and he will stay in training next season.”
Bin Suroor revealed that Juddmonte International winner Sulamani will work on the Limekilns at Newmarket tomorrow morning, after which a decision will be made on his participation in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on Sunday week.
He added: “I am very happy with Sulamani and, while we will see how he shapes in the gallop, we definitely plan to run Mamool in Paris.
“Frankie rode him at exercise on Wednesday on the round gallop and they went very well over the mile. Mamool won two Group Ones in Germany last year and he has added a Group Three this year, so he must have a good chance in the Arc.”

ONE WILL AND ONE WON’T
Courageous Duke and Impeller, who filled the places behind Dubai Destination in the opening Sodexho EBF Classified Stakes, are both in the Cambridgeshire next weekend, but while Impeller is going to take his chance, Courageous Duke will not be in the line-up.
“No, I don’t think he will,” said Jeremy Noseda after Courageous Duke had gone down by half a length. “He has run another solid race and you can’t be disappointed, but he is just 4lb or 5lb too high in the handicap.
“The handicapper has got him on 93 and he wants to be on 86 or 87. If he ran in the Cambridgeshire he would run another good race, but he wouldn’t win and would finish about fifth or sixth. We’ll look at something which he can win.”
In contrast William Muir was very keen about Impeller at Newmarket and Paddy Power cut his five-year-old’s odds from 28-1 to 25-1. “The Cambridgeshire has been the idea for a while; we wanted to run him last year but he just got a bit fresh,” he said.
“Steve (Drowne), who will ride him again at Newmarket, said that he would probably do better over a mile and a furlong than a mile and a quarter (the distance of today’s race). He said that Impeller just didn’t pick up as quickly as he had hoped when he pulled him out, but that the horse was finishing better than anything.”
Frankie Dettori described the ground as “good to firm with a lush covering of grass,”while Richard Hughes said it was “quick, but safe” and Steve Drowne said it was “nice, fast ground.”

KHABFAIR LANDS THE TOUCH
Khabfair, backed from 8-1 into favouritism at 9-2, duly landed the touch in the Price Waterhouse Handicap, but it was only at the death that Johnny Murtagh forced him up to snatch the prize from long time leader Compton’s Eleven by a head.
He gave some the impression that he had been in two minds about going about his task but, after considerable thought, his trainer Amanda Perrett explained what she thought happened.
“The ground is pretty quick and I think he was just feeling it when Johnny let him down. As a result he was caught a bit flat footed, but then when he picked up he ran on well,” she said.
“He was a bit unlucky at York last time when the ground was rough and loose on top and he just couldn’t get a grip on it,” the trainer went on before saying that “when a three-year-old is rated up in the 90s he either has to carry big weights or else take on the older handicap sprinters who are very tough and have been doing the job for years.”

COMPTON PIPPED AGAIN
For the third successive time, Compton’s Eleven was beaten in a photo-finish, (this was his fourth successive second) being pipped a head by the fast-finishing Khabfair in the PriceWaterhouseCoopers Handicap.
Thwarted by a head at Haydock and a short head at Chester, Compton’s Eleven had a duel up front with Bentley’s Ball but, having shaken off that rival at the furlong-pole, Mick Channon’s luckless grey was caught on the line.
“He did nothing wrong - he travelled beautifully and we got mugged on the line,” reported jockey Sam Hitchcott on dismounting.
Part-owner Colin Ingleby-Mackenzie said: “To look at his form figures - 222 - you would think he was a twicer but, though not very big, you could not find a more genuine sort.
“The handicapper has already put him up 7lb for those three seconds, and I suppose Compton’s Eleven will go up again now. It seems unfair to penalise consistency.”
Ingleby-Mackenzie shares Compton’s Eleven with Channon and the estate of Paul Getty, the former millionaire, whose widow Victoria “was cheering her head off in Damascus”.

ANOTHER SURPRISE PACKET FOR BRITTAIN
Mazuna showed her fine Doncaster second was no fluke when, under a brilliant ride from young Ryan Moore, she sprang a 14-1 surprise in the Princess Royal John Doyle Stakes, holding on by a short-head in a bobbing finish with fancied Irish raider My Renee.
Clive Brittain, no stranger to producing a surprise-packet, said with a smile: “The punters are obviously starting to believe in me. Mazuna started at 100-1 when we launched a typical Carlburg flyer in the Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster (she was only beaten a length by Echoes In Eternity), but she went off only 14-1 here, so they are beginning to follow me.
“Mazuna took a long time to come to hand, but I managed to persuade Saeed Manana, her owner, to take her out of the July Sales as I was convinced that we had not seen the filly that I have watched burn up the gallops in the mornings.
“It was Ryan’s suggestion to step her up in distance at Doncaster, and his judgement has proved spot on.
“She was twice beaten in handicaps because they went no pace, but she has never stopped improving and now we might have a look at a Group 1 in Italy at the back-end.”
Warrsan will carry the same red and white colours in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on Sunday week, and Brittain is predicting another big run from his globe-trotting stable-star.
He added: “Warrsan worked in the dark at 5.45 the other morning, and Kerrin McEvoy, who has been confirmed as the rider in Paris, was delighted. The horse is four kilos above his racing weight, but one more workout next week and he will be spot on.”
Brittain revealed a busy schedule for his stars in Paris, with last week’s Dubai Sprint Trophy runner-up Var (Frankie Dettori) being supplemented for the Prix de l’Abbaye, Gimcrack winner Tony James running in the Grand Criterium, and Menhoubah taking her chance in the Prix de l’Opera.

PRINCESS ROYAL JOHN DOYLE STAKES
MAYBE AMERICA FOR THE RUNNER-UP
My Renee, who won at this meeting last year, was just touched off when trying for a second course and distance victory in the Princess Royal Stakes, going down by a short head to Mazuna after the pair had gone hammer and tongs through the final furlong.
“Maybe she was in front a bit too soon, but I must have thought she had won about four times coming up the straight,” said the filly’s trainer Michael Grassick.
“And she also missed about four days last week when she had stone bruise, so that just might have made the difference.
“It has been a wretched summer for us, we have had all sorts of things wrong with the horses with viruses and coughing, and it is only in the last couple of weeks that we have shaken it off and started to have a few winners.
“My Renee loves fast ground -- she cannot go in the soft -- and I would like to try her in America through the winter. She would love the fast ground in California and it would be good to try and get a couple of races into her there.
“The trouble is that her owner (Miss Pat O’Kelly of the Kilcarn Stud) is not as keen on that idea as I am, so I shall have to work on her about it.”

BOLLINGER CHAMPAGNE AMATEUR RIDERS’ HANDICAP
KITTOW STRIKES AT FIRST ATTEMPT
Stuart Kittow, who trains a small mixed string near Cullompton in Devonshire, struck at the very first attempt at Ascot when Skylarker won the final of the Bollinger Champagne Amateur Riders’ Handicap at 20-1 in the hands of Leslie Jefford.
“Not just my first winner here, my very first runner,” said Kittow after Skylarker had beaten Genghis by three lengths.
“We have had this race in mind for him since he won at Warwick and planned the two races he has had since then, including the race at Epsom where we had to have a rider we did not know because of the way in which the race is organised.
“In the end we had a rider from Spain, who did not do a bad job, but he does not know the horse in the way that Les does, which makes a big difference when they are racing.
“Les rides out for my father-in-law Gerald Cottrell and he rode out this horse when I was away on holiday. I am the only one who rides him at home because with my big weight I can steady him.
“He deserves a nice win like that as he has been on the go for a long time -- he was running on the all weather in the winter, and unless the ground stays firm I expect that he will now have a break.”
Though Leslie Jefford won this race and is also a past winner (I999) of the Bollinger Trophy for amateur riders, he had to settle for second place in this year’s competition as Simon Walker, who was fifth here on Jacaranda, had the prize sewn up before the day began.
Bollinger Champagne Challenge Gentleman Amateur Riders Final Placed Quotes
NO LUCK FOR TENDER FALCON
Tender Falcon, trying for a hat-trick in the Bollinger Champagne Challenge Gentleman Amateur Riders Final, was arguably unlucky to finish only third.
Ivor Hodge, whose brother Ron trains Tender Falcon, said: “He has run a blinder with 11st 10lb, but he just couldn’t get out. If he had done so he might have finished second, though we wouldn’t have beaten the winner.”
Tender Falcon had been involved with a barging match up the straight with Jacaranda, and his rider James White was found to have purposely pushed his way out and was banned for seven days for careless riding.
However, there was still a champagne celebration for Simon Walker, who, though eventually finishing fifth on Jacaranda, had already clinched the Bollinger amateur championship, and he collected six magnums of the sponsor’s product.
Hughie Morrison, who trained runner-up Genghis, said: “We have been beaten three lengths so I have no complaints. John (Best) said that he just kept galloping and that he could not quicken.
Race Five: Allied Irish Bank Maiden Stakes
EXPERIENCE PAYS OFF FOR
DAVID JUNIOR
David Junior, named after the son of owner David Sullivan of joint owner Roldvale Ltd, was the only one of the five runners in the Allied Irish Bank Maiden Stakes with previous experience, and the even money favourite put that to good use when outrunning Godolphin’s newcomer Macabre by three parts of a length.
Brian Meehan, who also trained Bunny Rabbit to win for the same owner at Kempton on Wednesday, said: “That’s two winners in three days for David - I have redeemed myself!
“David Junior is a real nice two-year-old, but he is still very green and was pricking his ears up the straight.
“It was a big help that Frankie (Dettori) came with him on Macabre, but we always had him covered, and I like him a lot.
“We’ll talk with David before deciding whether to have another run this season.”
Saeed bin Suroor, who trained runner-up Macabre, said: “He has run well and will improve for that. The idea now is to run him in a maiden over the same distance in a couple of weeks time.”
BACHELOR DUKE MISSES THE QUEEN ELIZABETH II STAKES
Bachelor Duke will not line up for tomorrow's feature, the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, at Ascot because he is slightly lame.
Trainer James Toller told the PA: “He's just slightly lame on one of his hind legs and he's got a vet's certificate. It doesn't seem to be much but just enough to stop him running. It's disappointing to put it mildly.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE SIX
WEST END & METROPOLITAN HANDICAP
GRANSTON REWARDS THE TRIP
The father and son team of Tom and Richard Vickers came down from Wakefield this morning with a total of six members of their families with the hope of cheering home their Granston in the closing West End & Metropolitan Handicap.
The long trip proved well worthwhile and the cheers ran out with gusto as Richard Quinn got the grey bottom weight home by a neck from Evaluator at the top of the handicap.
“This is the first winner we have had at Ascot, though we were third in the Hunt Cup with Tough Love when we had horses with Peter Easterby,” said Vickers senior.
“But we have been with Granston’s trainer James Bethell for some years now and we were lucky enough to win the July Stakes at Newmarket with Rich Gold at 50-1 a few years ago.”
There are no immediate plans for Granston, who his connections feel would have won more than his three races now if he had had better luck on running on innumerable occasions.
One of those was at Doncaster last time after which Richard Quinn told connections that a stiff mile would suit Granston well. That is precisely what the grey had here and it certainly suited him.
Terry Mills was justifiably proud of top weight Evaluator who finished second. He said: “The low draw did not help us but Granston should have won at Doncaster last time and if he had done he would have had a penalty, which would have swung things our way.”
GOING NEWS AT 10.30 AM
Following a dry night the going for the first day of the Ascot Finale is
GOOD TO FIRM, GOOD IN PLACES,
but the track will be drying out all the time in the sun and breeze.
“It will be getter drier during racing today, though there is a chance of some rain tomorrow afternoon; the forecasters say that there may be three or four millimetres of rain coming in at about 2pm,” said clerk of the course Nick Cheyne.
“We put on six millimetres of water all round the track on Tuesday and we have had no rain since then. The ground may become quite fast if there is no rain tomorrow. We have no plans for further watering.”

BETFAIR AGREES MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING WITH THE NATIONAL HORSERACING AUTHORITY OF SOUTH AFRICA
Betfair has agreed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Horseracing Authority of South Africa (formerly the Jockey Club of Southern Africa).
The agreement is in line with the MOU signed with the UK Jockey Club. It is also the same agreement signed with, among others, the International Cricket Council, the English Football Association, the Association of Tennis Professionals, and Cricket Australia.
Earlier this month, the British Government Minister Responsible for Gambling, Lord McIntosh, urged sporting bodies all round the world to sign an agreement in order to access what he described as 'unrivalled audit trails'. He said he found it 'difficult to understand why a sporting regulator would refuse the free transfer of betting information to protect a sport's integrity and credibility'.
Chief Executive of the Australian Racing Board Andrew Harding describes the MOU as a 'sham'. The Australian Racing industry says it has no interest in signing it.
