THE VALUE BETTING COLUMN EVERY SATURDAY
CURRAGH, IRELAND, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2004 GOING: Good, good to yielding 3.40pm 300,000 euros Irish Field St. Leger (Group 1) (3yo+), 1m 6f 1) (9) -120 Alcazar Hughie Morrison GB 9-9-08 Michael Fenton had more than his fair share of problems over the years but a good performer on his day. Ground probably not soft enough and has had a bit to find anyway. BP= 20/1 2) (12) 5-05 Blue Corrig Joseph Crowley 4-9-08b Pat Cosgrave Latest two efforts in Listed company do not suggest he is anywhere near good enough. BP= 150/1 3) (14) 5552 Brian Boru Aidan O'Brien 4-9-08t Jamie Spencer Won the Doncaster version of this race last season but has not quite clicked this season though he has been probably running over too short (10 or 12 furlongs) and too long distances (20 furlongs). Ran well over this sort of trip last time out and must have a good chance. BP= 6/1 4) (1) 0890 Chimes At Midnight Luke Comer 7-9-08b Catherine Gannon Fair performer a long time ago but can be safely ignored these days. BP= 500/1 5) (2) 6-37 Cruzspiel John Oxx 4-9-08b Mick Kinane Looked a scopey sort in 2003 but disappointing on both starts this year. Comes here after long lay-off and given the good form of his respected trainers, he should not be totally discounted. BP= 28/1 6) (10) 4822 Dubai Success Barry Hills GB 4-9-08 Michael Hills Won John Porter Stakes on seasonal reappearance at Newbury, beating Gamut and good form on latest two starts. Needs further improvement but stable his finally hit form once again. Any rain would help. BP= 10/1 7) (13) 9121 First Charter Sir Michael Stoute GB 5-9-08 Kieren Fallon Typical type of late-maturing horse his trainer does so well with. And had an excellent preparation for this race when successful in Group Two at York last time out. Respected. BP= 100/30 8) (3) 0384 Jagger Gerard Butler GB 4-9-08 Declan McDonogh Decent stayer in handicap company, but has never shown anything to suggest he is up to Group One class. BP= 40/1 9) (11) 11/5 Media Puzzle Dermot Weld 7-9-08b Pat Shanahan Won Melbourne Cup in 2002 and good effort on return to action in 10-furlong Group Two at the Curragh last month. Being aimed at Melbourne once again, but would be no surprise to see him run well here. BP= 16/1 10) (4) -611 Orange Touch Amanda Perrett GB 4-9-08 Johnny Murtagh Stable is in great form and couldn't have been any more impressive when winning Listed event at Goodwood last time on very soft ground last time. Needs to improve, but looks progressive. BP= 11/2 11) (8)7215 The Whistling Teal Geoff Wragg GB 8-9-08 John Egan Grand campaigner over the years and still in good form this year despite his age. Should be thereabouts, but vulnerable to improving types, likes cut in the ground. BP= 22/1 12) (5) 4-22 Vinnie Roe Dermot Weld 6-9-08b Pat Smullen Winner of this race for the last three years and bidding for an unprecedented fourth victory. Hasn't been seen at his best on two starts this season but his trainer is sure to have him primed here. However, no value though and worth opposing. BP= 5/2 13) (6)3234 Napoleon 20 Aidan O'Brien 3-8-12tb Colm O'Donoghue Good form in maidens this season but looks weakest of the Ballydoyle runners. BP= 200/1 14) (7)1224 Two Miles West Aidan O'Brien 3-8-12t Seamus Heffernan Second in Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot and not much wrong with his fourth here last time. Doesn't look quite good enough and will probably come into his own next year. BP= 20/1 SUMMARY All eyes will be on Vinnie Roe but this is a very open renewal and the most competitive he has ever run in. The value is with BRIAN BORU.
