On a day (yesterday) when the bookies were relieved to see a nationwide gamble on Spuradich go astray, Newbury winners Navado and Putra Pekan were cut by Coral to 16-1 (from 33-1 and 25-1 respectively) for next month's Tote Cambridgeshire.

The Luca Cumani-trained Spuradich, for whom a win would have cost the layers millions, has been eased to 14-1 (from 8-1) for the Newmarket showpiece.

"At 3.15 on Saturday afternoon we were staring down the gun barrel following the biggest gamble of the season, but with defeat for Spuradich followed by Frizzante's sixth place in the Tote Ayr Gold Cup, by 3.40pm we were cracking open the champagne," said Coral's David Stevens.

An estimated crowd of some 5,000 people came to see dual Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Best Mate at Henrietta Knight's West Lockinge stables near Wantage today.

The eight-year-old is to be given the same campaign as last season by his trainer. The Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon on November 22 will be followed by the Pertemps King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day and the Gold Cup in March.

Henrietta Knight said: “Best Mate loves an audience, has summered really well here and is in tremendous form. He is my idea of the perfect racehorse.

“By giving him just three races a year the public will hopefully be able to watch him on the racecourse for many years to come.”
