TOTE AUTUMN DOUBLE NEWS
JARVIS LOOKING FORWARD TO THE TOTE AUTUMN DOUBLE
Michael Jarvis today revealed that he hopes to have at least one runner in both legs of the Tote £100,000 Autumn Double - the £130,000 Tote Cambridgeshire at Newmarket on Saturday, October 4, and the £130,000 Tote Cesarewitch at Newmarket on Saturday, October 18.
The Newmarket trainer has three entries in the Tote Cambridgeshire - Putra Pekan, In A Silent Way and Putra Kuantan - and two in the Tote Cesarewitch, Putra Sandhurst and Anak Pekan.
"It's a long way off but I'd be hopeful that I would have a representative in both races," said Jarvis. "However, Putra Sandhurst probably won't run after his last start in the Tote Ebor [when 16th of 22 runners]. I don't think he's going to get the trip and I don't know whether Anak Pekan will get in the handicap or not."
The last trainer to achieve the magnificent feat of winning the Tote Autumn Double in the same year was Sam Darling, who saddled Masked Marvel to win the Cambridgeshire and Forseti to land the Cesarewitch in 1925.
This season there is additional excitement in the build-up to these historic handicaps as the Tote is offering a £100,000 bonus (£70,000 to the stable staff, £30,000 to the trainer) to any stable which can win both legs of the 2003 Tote Autumn Double.
Asked just how difficult it is to train the winners of both races in the same year, Jarvis bullishly responded: "Well I don't think it's that difficult if you've got the right horses!
"I don't know whether it's been done or not - I mean if you've got a good candidate for each race, I don't think there's any reason why they couldn't win. I must say it is a very unusual feat but it could be done."
Jarvis has already had 40 winners in 2003, as well as earning over £530,000 in win and place prize money. To add the £100,000 bonus to this total for winning the Tote Autumn Double, plus the prize money, would mean a lot to one of the most popular handlers in the business.
"Financially it would be very rewarding as well as giving the yard a good fillip," he added.
OSBORNE PAIR IN LINE FOR CRACK AT TOTE CAMBRIDGESHIRE AND TOTE CESAREWITCH
Jamie Osborne also today revealed that he is keen to go for the Tote Autumn Double with Sahaat in the Tote Cambridgeshire and Red Wine in the Tote Cesarewitch.
"Sahaat and Red Wine would both be intended runners at the moment," said the Lambourn trainer.
Sahaat has been campaigned over a mile to 10 furlongs this year, with his best effort on turf coming when the three-length fourth behind Funfair in a Listed rated handicap at York in May. The Tote Cambridgeshire will be his first attempt at nine furlongs.
"We've run him at a mile and they just get him at it jolly early enough, we go a mile and a quarter and he looks like he doesn't see it out properly so I would say nine furlongs is probably ideal for him," explained Osborne.
The Machiavellian gelding encountered fast ground on that outing at the Knavesmire although he has won on soft ground in the French provinces when trained by John Hammond.
Osborne continued: "Sahaat is reasonably flexible as far as ground goes. I think the key to him is having him a bit fresh and I ran him probably with too much regularity in the first half of the season so he's having a break and being aimed at the Tote Cambridgeshire - hopefully it will be worth it."
Red Wine gained the biggest success of his career last season when winning the Tote Scoop6 November Handicap at Doncaster where he proved a head too strong for Bollin Nellie in a tremendous finish. He was 12 lengths adrift of Mana D'Argent on his last outing in the Tote Exacta Handicap at Ascot on July 12.
The trainer said: "I think I ran Red Wine back too quick last time - he had a reasonably hard race before that in the Northumberland Plate (fourth) and we probably went to the well once too often too quickly.
"He's had a break as well and his target very much is the Tote Cesarewitch. He proved in the Plate that the trip is not a problem to him."
The four-year-old's victory in the Tote Scoop6 November Handicap was achieved on heavy ground.
"It doesn't necessarily have to be bottomless, just over that sort of trip [a mile and a half]. As long as it wasn't quick ground, I would be happy - it's not imperative that he has soft ground," outlined Osborne.
The handler believes that it will take an immense training performance to secure the Tote's £100,000 bonus.
"It's fairly impossible - if we could win one of these races I'd be delighted."
THE TOTE AUTUMN DOUBLE
The Tote announced in July the huge bonus for a stable which wins both legs of the Tote Autumn Double at Newmarket, namely the Tote Cambridgeshire on October 4 and the Tote Cesarewitch on October 18.
The yard which provides the winner of both races will collect £100,000 in addition to the prize money, which will be split £70,000 to the stable staff and £30,000 to the trainer.
Entries and weights for both races are revealed today, Tuesday, September 2 .
Tote Chairman Peter Jones commented: "We are keen to see the profile of the Tote Autumn Double increase and I'm confident that this significant bonus will add another level of interest to two of the biggest betting handicaps of the year.
"Although it is tough to win one of these races, let alone both of them, the lure of a £100,000 bonus will undoubtedly get the attention of some of the shrewdest trainers around, particularly as a good proportion of that sum goes towards their stable staff."
Lisa Hancock, Newmarket's Managing Director, added: "The Tote Cambridgeshire and Tote Cesarewitch are two of the real highlights of our Autumn programme and are worth a lot of money in their own right (£130,000 each), but I'm delighted that the Tote is putting up this bonus to give an added focus to these two historic handicaps."
To win the bonus, the same trainer must win both races and both winning horses must be under that trainer's care (according to Weatherbys) on September 30, 2003.
GIVEN ENTERS THREE FOR TOTE CAMBRIDGESHIRE INCLUDING 2001 HERO I CRIED FOR YOU
This year's £130,000 Tote Cambridgeshire, which is run at Newmarket on Saturday, October 4, has attracted 138 high-class entries including the James Given-trained I Cried For You (8st 9lb), who proved two lengths too strong for Halland under a fine ride from Michael Fenton in this prestigious contest two years ago.
Given has also entered Crow Wood (8st 6lb), winner of three races this term including most recently a classified stakes at Ayr on the first day of August when getting the better of Wunderwood by two and a half lengths, and Hallion (8st 2lb), the winner of the Thirsk Hunt Cup in May when beating Cat's Whiskers (8st 1lb) by half a length.
Barry Hills won the Tote Cambridgeshire courtesy of Risen Moon in 1990 and this year his seven entries are headed by the Khalid Abdulla-owned Far Lane (9st 10lb). The four-year-old was the one and a half length runner-up to Beauchamp Pilot in last year's renewal and won the 44th John Smith's Cup at York on July 12.
Hills' powerful squad also includes Pablo (9st 7lb), this season's impressive winner of the Freephone Stanley Lincoln at Doncaster, Gala Sunday (8st 10lb), the short-head runner-up to Franklins Gardens in the Weatherbys Blue Riband Trial Stakes at Epsom in April, and Faithful Warrior (8st 5lb), who was unable to win last season when he was never right but pleased his trainer with his fine one and a quarter length second to Lady Bear (8st 12lb) in the William Hill Mile at Goodwood in August.
Luca Cumani has hit the headlines in 2003 with the exploits of Falbrav but he is also known as a trainer perfectly capable of winning a big handicap. The Newmarket handler has won the Tote Cambridgeshire twice, with Century City in 1982 and four years later with Dallas.
Cumani has six possibles this time including Millafonic (8st 7lb), a lightly-raced Zafonic colt who has won two of his three racecourse starts, King's County (8st 4lb), who was only four lengths behind Vahorimix in the 2001 French 2,000 Guineas when trained by Aidan O'Brien, and Camelot (7st 13lb), a winner of a handicap on his last start at Redcar on August 9.
Another trainer to have won the Tote Cambridgeshire twice is Sir Mark Prescott, whose two successes came with Quinlan Terry in 1988 and Pasternak, who landed an almighty public gamble when backed down to 4/1 favourite in 1997.
Chivalry (8st 1lb) gained four victories in succession last season before finishing ninth in the 2002 Tote Cambridgeshire, while Prescott's other entry Coat Of Honour (7st 11lb) has already scored twice this term including in the Graham Rock Memorial Handicap at Pontefract in June. This victory would have been especially poignant for both Prescott and winning jockey George Duffield as the race honours the late racing journalist Graham Rock, who owned part-owned Pasternak when he was steered home by Duffield six years ago.
Sir Michael Stoute's runners in high-class handicaps invariably turn out to be pattern performers. His three possibles include Akshar (9st 3lb), who justified favouritism on his latest start in a handicap at York on August 20 when denying Howle Hill (8st 12lb) by three-quarters of a length, Navado (8st 5lb), who has been in the first three on four of his seven starts, and Tug Of Love (8st 4lb), fourth to Leporello on his last start in the Bonusprint Stakes on Newmarket's July Course on July 9.
Andy Clifton, the Tote's PR Director, commented: "We're delighted with the quality and the quantity of entries for both races and are looking forward to this year's Tote Autumn Double at Newmarket. I hope that the £100,000 stable staff bonus produces some interest amongst trainers with entries in both races, but either way, the Tote Cambridgeshire and Tote Cesarewitch are sure to be amongst the most competitive events of the season, and will, as usual, feature very highly in the list of biggest off course betting races of 2003."

I Cried For You has been one of the stars of James Given's yard. He has won seven races in total and enjoyed the greatest success of his career in the 2001 Tote Cambridgeshire at Newmarket.
The Statoblest gelding has not been seen out since running in the Winter Derby at Lingfield on March 15 but has a repeat win in the Tote Cambridgeshire as his main aim this autumn.
James Given commented on Tuesday, September 2, at a Tote media morning at his Lincolnshire stables: "We tried a hurdling campaign with him last winter as his handicap mark had become very high on the Flat and he had become difficult to place. He would have won a small novice hurdle somewhere round the country but that wasn't the point - we wanted him to be a Cheltenham or Aintree type of horse and he didn't really stay two miles over hurdles competitively.
"He then had a long break but is back in training now. He will have a run or two in the lead-up to the Tote Cambridgeshire, his main target for this year."

Crow Wood has been on cracking form this season, winning three of his five starts.
He made a winning seasonal debut in a class C handicap at Doncaster in May and has gone on land a similar race at Haydock and a classified stakes at Ayr. His other two runs this year saw him finish third in the valuable Zetland Gold Cup at Redcar while his one disappointment came when finishing last in the class B Cadogan Silver Salver Handicap at York in June.
James Given declared: "Crow Wood likes to have a break between his races and I think his disappointing run at York was due to us running him too quickly after Haydock, with only 10 days in between. It was his third race in quick succession and he didn't seem to like the whole experience of racing on the Knavesmire.
"Apart from York, he has been very consistent all year. The Tote Cambridgeshire will be the first time we've run him back at nine furlongs but he has got quite a bit of pace. We have also thought about stepping him to a mile and a half as well at times.
"I think he will be able to equip himself well in the Tote Cambridgeshire and be competitive. He does like some cut in the ground."

Hallion sustained a leg injury during his three-year-old campaign but made a winning seasonal reappearance when scoring in the Thirsk Hunt Cup on May 3.
Since then, he has disappointed in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot and in the William Hill Mile at Goodwood.
James Given commented: "Hallion has the capability of being a big-race kind of horse.
"He certainly has the ability, as he demonstrated when winning the Thirsk Hunt Cup earlier this season on his first run back after his leg injury last year.
"He has disappointed on his two outings subsequently, although the ground was like a road at Royal Ascot.
"Whether he really has the mental makeup for a big race - I don't know. He clearly has bags of ability and it may be that he just needs some soft ground. He deserves to be in the Tote Cambridgeshire but we just need to find a little bit more about him before committing him."
TOTE CAMBRIDGESHIRE FACTS & FIGURES
The Tote Cambridgeshire was first run in 1839, being won by Lanercost.
The famous handicap is run over 1m 1f on the Rowley Mile course at Newmarket. It has also been held four times on the July course (1999, 1986, 1941, 1939) while the 1940 Cambridgeshire was run at Nottingham.
La Fleche won the 1892 Cambridgeshire after capturing the 1000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger that season.
The 1994 winner Halling, who captured the Cambridgeshire off 8st 8lb, went on to score five times in Group One company, taking in the Eclipse (twice), Juddmonte International (twice) and Prix d'Ispahan.
Three horses have managed to pull off the "Autumn Double" (Tote Cambridgeshire & Tote Cesarewitch) - Rosebery (1876), Foxhall (1881) and Plaisanterie (1885). The last trainer to win the Tote Cambridgeshire and the Tote Cesarewitch in the same year was Sam Darling in 1925, taking the former with Masked Marvel and the latter with Forseti.
There have been six dual winners of the race: Hackler's Pride (1903 & 1904), Christmas Daisy (1909 & 1910), Sterope (1948 & 1949), Prince de Galles (1969 & 1970), Baronet (1978 & 1980) and Rambo's Hall (1989 & 1992).
Baronet, trained at Epsom by John Benstead, was a real Tote Cambridgeshire specialist. In addition to winning the contest in 1978 and 1980, he was also second in 1977 and 1981.
Pullover caused the biggest shock ever in the Cambridgeshire when winning at 100/1 in 1932, while the shortest-priced horse ever to be successful was the 11/10 shot Polymelus in 1906.
In more recent times, the biggest shocks have come with the 50/1 shots Braughing (1981) and Balthus (1987), while the 2001 hero I Cried For You was returned at 33/1.
Since the war only seven favourites have been triumphant, the last being the Sir Mark Prescott-trained Pasternak in 1997 who went off at 4/1.
Among current trainers, the most successful in the Cambridgeshire is Jeremy Glover who has sent out the victor on four occasions (Balthus 1987, Rambo's Hall 1989 & 1992 and Clifton Fox 1996). Sir Mark Prescott and Luca Cumani have each had two winners.
Three of Jeremy Glover's Cambridgeshire heroes were partnered by Dean McKeown, making him the most successful current jockey in the contest. Both Sir Mark Prescott's victors (Quinlan Terry 1988 and Pasternak 1997) were ridden by George Duffield.
The highest weight carried to victory in the post-war period was the 9st 10lb shouldered by the Roger Charlton-trained Cap Juluca in 1995.
On the other hand, Esquire won with the featherweight of 6st 3lb in 1945.
There have been two dead-heats during the race's history - Medal & Niantic (1927) and Violetta III & Henry The Seventh (1961)

LAST YEAR'S WINNER FIGURES AMONG 82 HOPEFULS FOR TOTE CESAREWITCH
The Martin Pipe-trained Miss Fara (8st 9lb) could bid for back-to-back victories in the £130,000 Tote Cesarewitch as the Galetto mare is among 82 great entries for the 2003 renewal, which will be held at Newmarket on October 18.
Last year Miss Fara was given a brilliant ride by Ryan Moore to catch Direct Bearing (8st 7lb) in the last strides and win by a head. It was impossible not to feel sorry for the runner-up, whose trainer Dermot Weld felt his charge had got to the front too soon, having gone on over three furlongs out.
Pipe's eight-strong entry also includes Sindapour (8st 1lb), this year's winner of the Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot by three lengths from Landing Light (9st 3lb), Canada (8st 7lb), the one length fourth behind Waverley in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at the same meeting, and Fortune Island (8st 6lb) who justified favouritism in the Surrey Herald Queen's Prize at Kempton in April.
In addition to Direct Bearing, Weld has entered Lowlander (8st 11lb), who has yet to win on the level this term but won three successive handicaps between July and September last year, including the EBF September Handicap at the Curragh. The Irish trainer is chasing his second Tote Cesarewitch success, having won the 1992 renewal with subsequent Melbourne Cup hero Vintage Crop.
David Elsworth has yet to win this prestigious handicap but he looks to have a very strong hand this year with his four entries. Saint Alebe (9st 4lb) came from last to first to win the Tote Ebor at York on August 20, having earlier won the March Handicap at Newmarket on his seasonal debut, while Gulf (9st 9lb) was the two and a quarter length third to Mana D'Argent (8st 8lb) in the Tote Exacta Handicap at Ascot in July.
Elsworth's squad is completed by First Ballot (9st 10lb), who won last year's running of the March Handicap by a length from subsequent Group One Vodafone Coronation Cup hero Warrsan, and Romany Prince (9st 6lb), runner-up last time in a competitive handicap at Glorious Goodwood.
Sir Mark Prescott is another trainer searching for that elusive first Tote Cesarewitch victory. He has six entries in 2003 including One Off (7st 9lb), who has been placed brilliantly to win his last six starts justifying favouritism on each occasion and Inglis Drever (9st 1lb), a remarkably consistent son of In The Wings who has been placed in the first three on his last eight starts, including wins on his last two starts in the Stan James 08000 383 384 Handicap and the Breheny Handicap both held at Newmarket.
The Newmarket trainer's possibles are completed by No Refuge (8st 2lb), Numitas (7st 13lb), Nadeszhda (7st 8lb) and Tempsford (7st).
Distant Prospect (8st 12lb) won the Tote Cesarewitch two years ago for Ian Balding, who retired at the end of last season. The six-year-old is now in the hands of Balding's capable son Andrew, who gained his first classic success earlier in the campaign courtesy of Casual Look in the Vodafone Oaks.
An intriguing entry comes in the form of Dawari (8st 7lb), who is trained at Mijas Racecourse in Spain by former permit-holder and property magnate Peter Haley. The In The Wings gelding was formerly trained by Sir Michael Stoute, who saddled him to finish the five and three-quarter length fourth to Mr Combustible in the Group Three Victor Chandler Chester Vase in 2001.
Mary Reveley loves nothing better than launching a raid on the Tote Cesarewitch from her Saltburn training centre, having taken the 1995 running with Old Red and winning again two years later with Turnpole.
She has entered Tees Components (9st 4lb), a winner at Newmarket last season, Nobratinetta (7st 10lb), a maiden winner at Hamilton in May, and Flame Of Zara (6st 5lb), a four-year-old filly still looking for a first racecourse success.

TOTE CESAREWITCH FACTS & FIGURES
The inaugural running of the Cesarewitch took place in 1839 and was won by Cuiskeen.
This prestigious handicap, run over two miles and two furlongs for three-year-olds and upwards, was sponsored for the first time in 1971 and has been backed by the Tote since 1978.
Punters who backed Audrey in 1861 or Charley's Mount in 1924 were rewarded by the longest-priced winners in the history of the race at 100/1. Those supporters of Private Audition in 1987 were not complaining either as the horse was returned at 50/1 (75/1 with the Tote) - the longest-priced winner since 1945.
The shortest-priced winner came in 1859 when Artless was returned at 5/6, the only odds-on winner in the history of the race. Chantry at 4/1 in 1953 was the shortest-priced victor since 1945.
Ryan Price and Ian Balding are the most successful trainers with three victories apiece since 1945. Price's first was with Utrillo in 1963, followed by Persian Lancer three years later and Major Rose in 1968. Balding's trio came courtesy of Centurion in 1978, Top Cees in 1999 and Distant Prospect in 2001.
Mary Reveley and Martin Pipe have both won the contest twice. Reveley's victories were with Old Red (1995) and Turnpole (1997) while Pipe triumphed with Heros Fatal (2000) and Miss Fara (2002).
Doug Smith is the most successful jockey since 1945. He gained three victories in the 1950s through French Design (1954), Sandiacre (1957), and Come To Daddy (1959). He followed up with two more wins in the next decade with Alcove in 1960 and Persian Lancer six years later. He was also successful in 1939 on Cantatrice giving him a total of six wins.
Gary Carter is the only current rider to have won more than once, partnering Private Audition in 1987 and Heros Fatal in 2000.
Dermot Weld saddled the last Irish-trained winner, Vintage Crop in 1993, while the last French-trained winner, Monsieur L'Amiral, came from the yard of Emile Charlier in 1946. Weld saddled Direct Bearing in 2002, who went down by a head to Miss Fara.
The largest post-war field was 38 in 1950, while the smallest was 11 in 1977 and 1979. The maximum field these days for safety reasons is 36 with the maximum field lining up last year.
The last mare to win was Miss Fara in 2002.
The 1976 scorer John Cherry carried the highest weight of 9st 13lb to victory while Top Cees, successful in 1999, was the oldest winner at nine.
Morecambe has the post-war record of the longest winning distance when scoring by ten lengths in 1958, a margin which the 1998 winner Spirit Of Love got close to - when nine lengths clear.
Horses nowadays do not contest the Autumn Double, the Tote Cesarewitch and Tote Cambridgeshire, but amazingly three horses in the nineteenth century not only participated in the two legs but won both races. The trio were Rosebery in 1876, Foxhall five seasons later and Plaisanterie in 1885. The last trainer to complete the double was Sam Darling in 1925.
No horse has ever been able to win the Tote Cesarewitch twice.
