TREMENDOUS FIELDS GO FORWARD FOR THE TOTE AUTUMN DOUBLE RACES
SHABERNAK COULD RUN IN THE TOTE CESAREWITCH RIDDEN BY KIEREN FALLON
The Tote Cambridgeshire and Tote Cesarewitch, which form the Tote Autumn Double, are fast approaching and, following yesterday’s forfeit stages, it is announced today that 101 and 74 horses respectively are going forward for the two historic Newmarket handicaps.
This means that the Tote Cambridgeshire, run over nine furlongs on Saturday, October 4, and the Tote Cesarewitch, double the length at two and a quarter miles on Saturday, October 18, should be as competitive as ever.
The latest betting issued by the sponsor, the Tote, certainly suggests thrilling contests, with the market leaders - Chivalry in the Tote Cambridgeshire and Distant Prospect in the Tote Cesarewitch - being each priced at 8/1.
This year’s introduction of the £100,000 Tote Autumn Double means that trainers are keener than ever to do well in both races which are among the biggest betting events of the year.
A magnificent £100,000 bonus (£70,000 to the stable staff, £30,000 to the trainer) is on offer to any stable which can win both legs of the 2003 Tote Autumn Double and this is in addition to the tremendous prize money - £130,000 each - for the Tote Cambridgeshire and Tote Cesarewitch.
There are 20 trainers with entries still in both handicaps - David Elsworth, Amanda Perrett, John Dunlop, Martin Pipe, Sir Mark Prescott, Mark Brisbourne, Andrew Balding, Michael Bell, Clive Brittain, Mick Channon, Luca Cumani, Paul D’Arcy, Brian Ellison, James Fanshawe, Peter Harris, Paul Howling, Gary Moore, Jamie Poulton, Alec Stewart and Marcus Tregoning.
The Tote have introduced last week’s Doncaster winner Shabernak into the betting for the Tote Cesarewitch at 10/1 after the four-year-old was left in at the forfeit stage.
Shabernak, winning his second race in the row, took the Tote Exacta Mallard Handicap in good style at Doncaster from Itemise by three-quarters of a length, with another eight lengths back to the third, Distant Prospect, who is ante-post favourite for the Tote Cesarewitch.
Connections of Shabernak initially suggested that he could miss the Tote Cesarewitch after that success but they have now had a rethink.
Michael Bell’s charge picked up a 7lb penalty for his Doncaster win and the Tote Cesarewitch could be the final opportunity for a big handicap success for the rapidly-improving four-year-old.
“Everything is up in the air at the moment,” said James Stafford, racing manager of owners Thurloe Thoroughbreds. “Michael was just a bit worried that he’s now got a big weight for a not very big horse running over a long distance. But if he’s bucking and squealing come October, he might well go there - it’s certainly not been ruled out.
“I know Kieren Fallon felt he was a Group horse in a handicap and we hope Kieren would ride if he runs in the Tote Cesarewitch. He’s rated 106 now so this is really his last chance of doing it.
“Nothing has been decided and there’s a possibility he could run in a Listed race at Ascot first and if he won that he wouldn’t pick up an additional penalty for the Tote Cesarewitch. There’s also a chance we might pluck up courage and go for the Jockey Club Cup (2m, Group Three, Newmarket, October 18).”
