TWO HIGH-CLASS WEDNESDAYS AT GOODWOOD

Goodwood stages two high-quality meetings on Wednesday, September 12, and Wednesday, September 19 - dates which may differ from those published in some racing calendars and diaries.

The two fixtures have traditionally been held on the Friday and Saturday, September 14 and 15, but have been moved to their mid-week positions this year to avoid a clash with the Goodwood Motor Circuit Revival Meeting (Friday, September 14, to Sunday, September 16 inclusive).

The Group 3 SELECT STAKES takes centre stage on September 12. The £40,000 contest is run over ten furlongs and regularly attracts some star performers. Since the race was elevated to Pattern status in 1986 its roll of honour has included such greats as Dancing Brave (1986), Most Welcome (1987), Mtoto (1988), future Champion Hurdle winner Alderbrook (1994) and world champion Singspiel (1996).

This year's field is set to include the hugely-promising Nayef, who began the year as a warm ante-post favourite for both the 2,000 Guineas and Vodafone Derby and looks to be starting to justify those high expectations following an impressive five-length success in the Group 3 Rose of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock on August 11. He had previously finished third in the Peugeot Gordon Stakes at Goodwood on July 31.

Nayef represents Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum and Marcus Tregoning, the owner/trainer combination who were successful 12 months ago with Ekraar.

Tregoning said: "Nayef has come out of Haydock fantastically well - he's in very good form. Last time he ran at Goodwood he was coming back from a bit of a lay off and at this stage the plan is to run in the Select Stakes and I hope he'll run well."
There is £87,000 in prize money on offer at the seven-race September 12 fixture which also includes the £10,000-added SOUTHERNPRINT CONDITIONS STAKES for three-year-olds and upwards and the £7,000-addedTILNEY INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT STAKES, a one-mile handicap. Racing begins at 2.15pm.

There is also a seven-race card on September 19 when the feature race is the £18,500-added STARDOM STAKES, a Listed contest over a mile for two-year-olds who often go on perform at the highest level.

Last year's renewal was won by the Sean Woods-trained Atlantis Prince, who went on to take the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot a fortnight later, while other high-class winners in recent years include Selkirk (1990), who was to go on to celebrity as the champion European miler of 1991 and 1992, while Seattle Rhyme (1991) won the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster later that season.

Racing on September 19 begins at 2.15pm with the BOLLINGER CHAMPAGNE CHALLENGE SERIES STAKES, a mile and a half contest in which some of Europe's leading gentleman amateur riders will be taking part.

Rod Fabricius, General Manager at Goodwood Racecourse, said: "Both the Select Stakes and Stardom Stakes have an excellent record of attracting top-class performers and we hope to see some more stars on show this year at our rescheduled Wednesday meetings on September 12 and 19."

Admission prices on both Wednesdays are Richmond Enclosure £19, Gordon Enclosure £12 and Public Enclosure £5 (over 65s £3.50). Accompanied children aged under 17 are admitted FREE while FREE parking is available. Goodwood's 2001 Flat season finishes with a two-day meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 25 and 26.

LOOK OUT FOR THUNDERCLAP IN NURSERY

The John Hills-trained Thunderclap gained his first racecourse victoryb in the Doug Wood's Happy Pensionhood Maiden Auction Stakes at Brighton yesterday.

The Royal Applause juvenile was held up by Michael Hills until over two furlongs out and then ridden to take the lead a furlong later. He went on to complete a comfortable three and a half length victory over First Ordainer.

Afterwards Hills was asked for the victor's next target to which he replied: "A little nursery before putting him away for the season."
