SENOR PETE POSTS TWO-YEAR-OLD WINNER IN NEW ZEALAND

Resurgent sire Senor Pete has provided the first two-year-old winner in New Zealand this season.

The honour went to the Senor Pete filly, Simple Twist (ex Little Tack) who scored an impressive win in the $10,000 Ford Dealership Two-Year-Old Series (800m) at the Wanganui Jockey Club's September 1 meeting.

In recent weeks Senor Pete's progeny have made a major impact in Australia and New Zealand with winning performances from such horses as the Gai Waterhouse-trained Rapida, an impressive winner of her last two starts in Sydney, and Squirt, who is unbeaten in two New Zealand races.

Other recent Australasian winners for Highview Stud-based Senor Pete, the sire of seven individual Group One winners in Argentina before he settled permanently in New Zealand, include Let's Went, Bold Mirage, Senorita Lucy, Noelle Braselle and Pirate Pete.

Simple Twist is trained at Cambridge by Tony and Wayne Pike who rate the filly very highly and believe she will be even better on top of the ground.

"Unlike many of the Senor Pete progeny she looked an early two-year-old from the moment she arrived at our stable three months ago," said Tony Pike.

"She has progressed very quickly and we did expect her to run well on her debut today after she finished a good second in her only trial," Pike said.

Simple Twist (ex Little Tack) is raced by her breeder, Cambridge veterinarian Ian Mackay. Her next start will be at Hastings on September 29.

MORSHDI TAKES THE FOURTH LEG OF THE EMIRATES WORLD SERIES

Morshdi, trained in Newmarket, England by Michael Jarvis battled hard to the line to win the fourth leg of the 2001 Emirates World Series - the United Arab Emirates Grosser Preis von Baden over a mile and a half at Iffezheim Racecourse in Baden-Baden, Germany on Sunday.

The Emirates World Series, sponsored by Emirates, the award winning international airline of the United Arab Emirates, travels around the globe taking in the twelve most prestigious thoroughbred races, in ten countries on four continents. All twelve are great races and events in their own right and together they provide a global test in horse racing to establish the Emirates World Series Champion of 2001.

Partnered by Philip Robinson, Morshdi, winner of the Italian Derby, was always going well in mid-division on the outside of the field which was taken along by the Torston Mundry ridden Krombacher. As they came round the home bend a band of four horses battled for the lead with race favourite Sabiango getting to the front in the straight along with German Derby winner Boreal and dual-Italian Group One winner Paolini.

Morshdi, a three-year-old son of Slip Anchor and running under the Darley Stud Management banner, took the lead in the final strides and crossed the line a length and a quarter ahead of Boreal, ridden by John Reid, third place went to Andreas Suborics ridden Sabiango and fourth to his stable mate Paolini.
Long term leader Krombacher finished seventh with the Lennart Hammer-Hansen ridden Passimo taking the fifth place spot. Sixth place and one Emirates World Series point went to Andrasch Starke aboard the Hans Blume-trained Aeskulap.

Jarvis commented after his victory, "This feels great, we were disappointed with his performance in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot and he did not run his race there. He was back in form today and beat a strong field.

"We will talk to the owner and will hope to aim him at the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (seventh leg of the Emirates World Series). He will remain in training as a four-year-old and we will target him next year at the Emirates World Series."
Robinson commented, "I was very pleased with the run, I was a bit worried about the early pace but everything went well. I walked the track before racing and had decided to go to the outside for the better ground."
The field for the UAE Grosser Preis von Baden was reduced to twelve following the scratchings of Hightori, Little Rock and Subiaco.

Morshdi now joins point leaders Captain Steve (winner of the Dubai World Cup), Galileo (winner of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes), and Silvano (winner of the Arlington Million) with 12 points. Trainer Andreas Wohler, who won the third leg with Silvano takes the lead in the trainers table with 19 points following the third and fourth place finishes of Sabiango and Paolini.
Wohler could very well extend his lead in the World Championship and as he is aiming his Arlington Million winner Silvano for the Carlton Draught Cox Plate, the eighth leg of the Emirates World Series, and Paolini for the Canadian International, the sixth race in the Series, and the penultimate leg - the Japan Cup on November 25th.
The Emirates World Series trophy was presented to the winning connections of Morshdi by Maurice Flanagan CBE, Group Managing Director of Emirates Airline. The 2001 Series continues on to Dublin, Ireland, for the Ireland The Food Island Irish Champion Stakes on Saturday, September 8th, which could well see another clash between Galileo and Fantastic Light.
