LAST DAY OF THE BETDAQ FESTIVAL OF RACING
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2001

TODAY’S CROWD

Today’s attendance on the final day of the BETDAQ Festival of Racing came to 14,025, up 1.4% on the previous year’s Sunday crowd of 13,835. The 1999 attendance was 13,691.

GOING NEWS AT 10.30 AM

With no rain having fallen at the course since yesterday afternoon, the going for the third and final day of the BETDAQ Festival of Racing remains

SOFT,

to which it was changed before racing yesterday.

“We had 16 1/2 millimetres of rain from overnight on Friday until lunchtime yesterday, but since then it has been dry apart from a little drizzle this morning,” said Clerk of the Course Nick Cheyne.

“The forecast suggests, though, that conditions may deteriorate through this afternoon.”

NASHAAB BIDS FOR
£1/4 MILLION PAYOUT

Nashaab, trained in Wales by David Evans, will win a colossal £250,000 bonus, offered by The Tote and the race sponsors, if he is successful in the £50,000 Final of the Mail On Sunday Mile series this afternoon.

The £250,000 bonus is payable to a horse who wins two of the nine qualifiers and the Final.

Nashaab finished first in the Doncaster qualifier on July 1, lost the race in the stewards’ room and was then re-awarded first place after an appeal to the Jockey Club. He went on to win the Chester qualifier on August 5.

Any horse that wins a qualifier and is placed in another will earn a £150,000 bonus if successful in the Final. Scottish Spice, trained by Ian Balding, is eligible for this prize having won the Sandown heat on August 19 and finished second at Windsor on June 3.

There are two horses chasing the bonus of £100,000 on offer to the Final winner if he or she has previously been placed in two qualifiers.

Tony Tie, trained in Lanarkshire by Jim Goldie, filled the runner-up spot in the Chester and Sandown qualifiers, while the John Spearing-trained Thihn came third at Windsor on June 3 and filled the same position at Kempton on July 22.

Although several horses have come close in recent years, a bonus has not yet been won in the Mail On Sunday Mile Final.

There would have been a maximum field of 32, the most allowed over the straight mile at Ascot, for today’s race had not Muyassir been withdrawn on account of the softened ground.

The winning owner will receive 50% of the bonus, the trainer 40% and the remaining 10% will be divided among the staff at the winning stable.

NAYEF TO STAY IN TRAINING NEXT YEAR BUT NO DECISION YET ON DUBAI CHAMPION STAKES

Trainer Marcus Tregoning was delighted with his charge Nayef after the three-year-old had gained his third Group Three victory in a row in this afternoon’s Royal Court Theatre Cumberland Lodge Stakes.

After Nayef had justified his odds of 8/13 by beating Sagittarius by one-and-a-quarter lengths, Tregoning commented: “It’s coming together with him now. He’ll stay in training as a four-year-old, but whether he runs in the Champion Stakes [at Newmarket on Saturday, October 20] we’ll leave it quite late on to decide.

“Everything gets a hard race today as they did yesterday. However, he’s a fresh horse who I gave a break to and he’s come back really well.”

Asked if he was surprised that Nayef stays a trip so well, the trainer added: “He’s leaning towards his mother [Height Of Fashion] who stayed well and it doesn’t surprise me that he stays.

“He’s quite lazy and he had to take it up when he did. You’ll definitely see him next year.”

HAUGEN DELIGHTED WITH RUNNER-UP

“That was brilliant, he has run really well,” enthused Rune Haugen after his Norwegian challenger Sagittarius had finished an honourable second to odds-on Nayef in the opener.

“That is only the seventh race of his career and last year he was almost put down because he fractured his joint and the vets had despaired of him.

“But I asked the owner to give me another three months with him after the screws had been taken out after the operation and he has recovered completely.

“This year he won first time out in Germany and he has been improving all the time since then. He is a big, strong horse by Sadler’s Wells who loves soft ground and I think he is much better suited to the stiffer English tracks than the sharp courses we have in Scandinavia.

“I am sure that I shall bring him back here again and I am sure he can go on to win more races for us. I don’t know if he will run again this season, but it is possible that I shall find another race for him in England this year in a month’s time. I am really delighted with him and the whole day has been unbelievable.

“We will how he is tomorrow. This was a dream come true for us from Norway. He trains up hills and is a very strong horse by Sadler’s Wells. He is a green horse still, only having run seven times.

“He is the best in Norway at the moment. He was unlucky last time but he has down everything right, four wins and three seconds in Group Threes this year.“

LEGAL APPROACHES ITALY

Legal Approach fought back really well to regain the lead from Yasey near the line and win the day’s first two-year-old race by a neck in a style which delighted his trainer Mark Johnston.

“He is still very green, he got a bit excited in his stall, he jumped the path and really he was very green throughout the race,” said Johnston. “He is like that at home and was very much so like that when he won first time out at Ayr, where he missed the break and lobbed round at the back before he produced a whirlwind finish to win.

“I would not say that I have six better at home as I think he is right up there with the best of my seven furlong/mile two-year-olds, like Leo’s Luckyman and Love Regardless.

“Joe Mercer (racing manager to the winner’s owner-breeder Sheikh Maktoum al Maktoum) is in Canada for Zindabad at Woodbine tonight, and as the Gran Criterium di Milano (Group One - Milan, Sunday, October 21) closes tomorrow I shall enter Legal Approach in that and we shall talk about it when Joe gets back from Canada.

“But this was a very encouraging effort, especially in view of the fact that he is still so green.”

ANOTHER NON-RUNNER

Mark Johnston has taken the same owner’s Dramatic Quest out of the 4.20pm, the BETDAQ Stakes.

YASEY JUST PIPPED IN JUVENILE THRILLER

The David Loder-trained Yasey, who ran in the colours of Sheikh Mohammed, was just beaten by a neck by Legal Approach in the Singapore Turf Club Conditions Stakes but connections were not too disheartened by the performance.

Ricky Bowman, Loder’s assistant trainer, said: “We feel that it was a typical soft ground race. They went very slow and then it turned into a two-furlong sprint.

“Yasey came there to win his race but then pulled up in front.”

Responding to whether he thought Yasey would have won on a faster surface, Bowman added: “I’m certain - we think he’s a nice horse. Under these conditions you’ve got to go through the ground and the other one went through it better.”

Third-placed Jonny Ebeneezer, trained by Ian Wood in Lambourn, was a further six lengths in adrift, but owner John Purcell was also content as it was only the second run of the gelding’s career.

He commented: “I’m very pleased. He’s a young horse who stands at 16.1/16.2 hands but he’s got potential. His sire Hurricane Sky is doing well at stud in Australia.”

Purcell was keen to praise the ride that his horse was given by Richard Hughes. He enthused: “I’m really pleased with the ride that Richard gave him. He looked after him well.”

WINNING QUOTES RACE THREE
RIGGS BANK RATED HANDICAP
JESSICA’S DREAM
VICTORY FOR GIVEN

Trainer James Given, whose I Cried For You was just beaten in yesterday’s Tote Trifecta Stakes, made up for it today as Jessica’s Dream gained an excellent victory in the Riggs Bank Rated Handicap under Mickey Fenton.

He said: “I’m very pleased. There was some doubt about the ground as all her runnings have been on firm ground. However, at the furlong pole she was the only one travelling.

“We had it in our heads that she was better on firm but she loved this ground. She’s rated 94 today and if she continues to improve we’ll have to think about stakes races - that will just increase her value as a filly.”

Given went on to reveal that there had been some talk of the Desert Style filly going to the sales. However, he explained: “She stays in training with me next year. She’s more wound up about her racing now and was on her back legs today.

“We’ll be in for a fun season next year although handicapping will be difficult. She started the season on a mark of 75 and she’ll be nearer the 100 mark now.”

“She can’t keep running as well as this in handicaps and we’ll have to go in search of black type. She’s so laid back at home and is so honest - I think she’s only been ridden twice since her last run in the Ayr Gold Cup,” the handler added.

Reporting on I Cried For You, Given commented: “He’s an old favourite of mine and he met a horse [Downland] who chose one day to put in a cracker. This race makes up for any disappointment and I Cried For You is in the Cambridgeshire [next Saturday at Newmarket].”

RIGGS BANK RATED STAKES
DANCING MYSTERY SECOND AGAIN

Dancing Mystery, runner-up to Ellens Lad in this Riggs Bank Rated Stakes last year, beat that rival this time round but once again had to settle for second as the finishing burst produced by Jessica’s Dream was more than he could counter.

“I thought for a moment that we were going to get there, but in fairness to the winner she has won well,” said Stephen Carson to the runner-up’s connections afterwards.

Dancing Mystery’s trainer Eric Wheeler feels that the seven-year-old may not be quite at his peak yet this year.

“He really likes the soft ground, though, and he was well handicapped for this race,” he said.

“I am sure we shall bring him back for the Bovis Handicap at the next meeting, he really loves it here.”

Wheeler also explained why David Kinsella, who was initially declared to ride the runner-up, was replaced by Carson, his fellow apprentice at Coombe Park.

“Steve is really the horse’s regular jockey, but he was going to Brighton to ride Flint Park,” he said. “But when that horse became a non-runner Steve switched back here and took the ride. David understands the situation.”

SADDLE SLIPPED

The stewards noted that Vita Spercolata, ridden by David Allan, had interfered with Get Stuck In, ridden by Robert Winston, both unplaced, around the two-furlong marker, but after viewing a video recording of the incident, they wer satisfied that it was caused as a resulkt of Allan’s saddle slipping. They therefore took no further action.

WINNING QUOTES RACE FOUR
MAIL ON SUNDAY HANDICAP (FINAL)
NO KICKBACK FOR THE CHIEF

Richard Hannon, who won the big two-year-old race, the £250,000 Watership Down Stud Sales Race here on Friday, was on the mark again when Hail The Chief sprang a 33-1 surprise in the final of the Mail on Sunday Handicap series. The stable also provided the runner-up in Norfolk Reed.

And his son Richard junior explained the reason behind what was to most people a shock success by the horse, who made quite a name for himself on the all weather through last winter.

“He hates any form of kickback whether he is running on the turf or the all weather,” he said. “When he ran at Epsom last time he just turned in a performance about 30lb below his best for that reason.

“But today with his high draw Richard (Smith) was able to get him out in the front and he hardly saw another horse through the race. He got a nice lead from the one on his outside and in the end he has won a bit comfortably.”

Hannon was also very pleased for the winner’s rider Richard Smith, who is in the last year of his apprenticeship before he has to take on the big boys on level terms.

“This was far and away his biggest winner and I hope it will be a kick start for him, with nine months to go before he comes out of his time. We have some good apprentices in the yard and he is as good as any of them.

“It was also very good of the owners (a partnership fronted by Peter Crane) to stick by Richard, who won four races on the horse on the all-weather.”

Hail The Chief was the subject of some big offers to go and race in the USA during his winning days in the winter, but Hannon reported that connections were not keen on selling the horse at that stage.

Richard Smith said: “We knew he was a good horse but we wondered about the ground - last time he ran, at Epsom, he didn’t run too well on the ground. So it seemed like the ground was against him today.

“But he proved that he goes on any ground today. My horse has plenty of speed - I just wanted to get him in front and settle him there. I do ride him out quite a bit. He won nicely.

“I have had 41 winners and I have two rides at Bath tomorrow. My big ambition is to keep riding. I’m 24, 25 in July, and hopefully, it will come right. We will see how things go. It has been a brilliant day. The owners have been very good to me.”

THE MAIL ON SUNDAY MILE FINAL HANDICAP
LADY BEAR PROVES SHREWD
INVESTMENT FOR FAHEY

Lady Bear ran a cracking race to finish third in this afternoon’s Mail On Sunday Mile Final Handicap, having disappointed last weekend at Ayr.

Although trainer Richard Fahey missed out on the £29,000 first prize, he was far from disappointed revealing that he had backed her each-way at 66/1 - an investment which might have gone some way in forcing the Grand Lodge filly’s starting price into 20/1.

Fahey said: “She’s probably running off a handicap mark where she’s got a chance now [she ran off 74 today]. She’s got no chance off the low 80's.

“She likes the soft ground and she might go for a one mile one furlong handicap at York next.”

WINNING QUOTES RACE FIVE
BETDAQ HANDICAP
HANNIBAL LAD WINS AGAIN AT ASCOT

The Mark Brisbourne-trained Hannibal Lad showed his liking for Ascot with his second course and distance victory in today’s BETDAQ Handicap.

Speaking about the Rock City gelding Brisbourne commented: “At home you wouldn’t say that he’s going as well as he is capable of. However, he’s a course and distance winner who likes heavy going.

“He’s won on all three all-weather tracks, on good to firm and heavy and from one mile one furlong to one mile six furlongs so he’s durable and versatile.”

Hannibal Lad was running off a mark 3lb worse than he would have been entitled to in the future and the handler admitted: “I had my critics when I entered him for this race but it costs a lot of money to enter races and he’s entitled to take his chance.

“I thought that he’d do well to be placed as he’s run against some good three-year-olds - he’s done well.”

Just over two weeks ago Hannibal Lad was well beaten by Ahraar, with whom he reversed the form today, and Brisbourne was unable to explain that run.

“It’s possible that he’s a better horse on slower ground. He won’t be sat on before Wednesday and he may go for a race at York next. George is very good tactically. He’s about 5ft 8in, he does well to ride at 7st 12lb. Where brains are concerned, George lacks nothing.”

“He’ll be entered for definite in the November Handicap [at Doncaster] and that option will be left open. He’s earned his corn.” he added.

Brisbourne went on to report on Scheming, who is a possible for next Saturday’s Tote Cambridgeshire at Newmarket. He said: “He’s only 50/50 for the Cambridgeshire as he pulled a muscle in his back. I’m trying my best to get him there.”

Winning rider George Baker, who claims 3lb, said: “He is very keen normally and I just got him switched off behind a couple. He picked up very well. He’s been up and down in the weights a bit - when he’s in form they hammer him. He’s dropped a little bit now. This is my 22nd winner of the year - it has been a good year but not as good as last year when I was claiming 7lb.”

DREAM FOR JUMPING

“I have had him for about a year but he did not run for me until a couple of weeks ago,” said Charlie Egerton after Dream With Me had beaten all but 20-1 Hannibal Lad in BETDAQ Handicap.

“He was a big weak horse when he came, so we had him cut and I turned him away. I am very pleased with that effort.

“I hope he is not too good on the Flat to prevent him from going jumping. That was the reason why we bought him; I think he will be a top class jumper.”

The ground was officially changed to HEAVY from soft before the BETDAQ Handicap.

SMITH AMAZED BY SUCCESS

Jeff Smith was so convinced that his Rapscallion had been beaten in the driving finish with Fruit of Glory that he was open mouthed with amazement when the announcement came that his colt had got home by a short head.

And the winner’s trainer James Eustace said: “I definitely thought we were second but we are very pleasantly surprised. It is a question of taking the money and running! Jason (Tate) was also convinced that we had been beaten.”

Smith had hopes earlier in the day of Scottish Spice in the final of the Mail on Sunday series but he explained that she “had probably peaked two weeks ago, you can’t really blame the ground for her. This colt is one for the future.”

Eustace said that he was not at all confident before the race in view of the heavy ground. He explained: “He is still a weak leggy two-year-old and to be honest we nearly put him away after he had won his maiden; he does live on his nerves a bit. He still has a lot of maturing to do.”

GREAT FINALE FOR BETDAQ FESTIVAL OF RACING

Racegoers at the Betdaq Festival of Racing were treated to an absolute corker of a last race of the meeting as Rapscallion and Fruit Of Glory fought head to head for the spoils in the Sodexho Nursery with the former landing the spoils by a short head.

Mick Channon, the trainer of the runner-up, was not present today but the owners, Kevin Hudson and Richard Hill, who make up the Buy And Sell Partnership did see their filly defeated gallantly.

Hill said: “She went off too early - no-one was making it and she had to go. I thought it was very tight. That would not have been the best of ground for her. She’s a lovely animal and we might put her away for the year now.”

His partner Hudson added: “I couldn’t believe she got beat. We thought she was verging on Listed class judging by her second at Folkestone to Prince Cyrano, who has franked that form in no uncertain terms.

“We thought that she was in here with a very good weight and she went ahead at the two-furlong mark but got tired. She’s a good filly who will win races.”

“Mick thought that she was a nice filly and she has a lovely attitude to racing. I bred her and for a filly she has a wonderful attitude,” the co-owner continued.

BETTING NEWS

The morning exchanges drew attention to the possibility of a long-priced winner yesterday with some shrewd judges taking 66-1 about Downland, who won the Tote Trifecta Handicap at 40-1, and there is another Yorkshire raider with similar qualifications today in Lady Bear, who has been backed with Hills from 50-1 to 22-1 for the final of the Mail on Sunday Handicap (3.45pm).

The same firm also report good business over Ahraar in the BETDAQ Handicap (4.20pm) and he is in from 9-2 to 7-2.

Stablemate Nayef has been in demand with Ladbrokes for the opening Royal Court Theatre Cumberland Lodge Stakes (2pm), and, with punters having taken the 4-6 about him, he is now trading at 4-7.

There has been money for two of the runners in the Riggs Bank Rated Stakes (3.10pm) where Kyllachy has been supported from 11-4 to 9-4 and Dancing Mystery, runner-up in the race last year, from 16-1 to 12-1. Prince Atraf is popular in the closing Sodexho Nursery (4.55pm), for which he has come in from 8-1 to 6-1.

Chandlers is another firm to have accommodated supporters of Dancing Mystery, whose price has been trimmed from 14-1 to 10-1, and in the Mail on Sunday Handicap they too have laid Lady Bear (33-1 to 20-1), as well as shortening Silk St John from 16-1 to 12-1 and Shush from 33-1 to 16-1.

They have also had money for Mana d’Argent, who has come in from 25-1 to
14-1 in the BETDAQ Handicap.

JOCKEY CHANGE

Jamie Mackay replaces Adrian Nicholls on no 17 Tap The Stone in the 4.55pm.

WHO’S HOT AT THE BETDAQ
FESTIVAL OF RACING?

Jamie Spencer and Richard Hills have been the jockeys in form so far at this year’s BETDAQ Festival of Racing with two successes apiece.

Spencer’s 30/1 double on Saturday came in the first two races on the card. First he steered the Aidan O’Brien-trained Mutinyonthebounty home in the Group Two Hackney Empire Royal Lodge Stakes by one and a half lengths from Tholjanah.

Just over half an hour later Spencer completed a marvellous day’s work, taking the Group One Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile on Gossamer, trained by Luca Cumani, by two and a half lengths from Maryinsky.

The Saeed bin Suroor-trained Summoner provided Richard Hills with a sensational victory in the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes yesterday.

The Inchinor colt was acting as a pacemaker for stablemate Noverre, who was sent off the heavily-backed 2/1 favourite. Hills rode such an enterprising race that three furlongs from home it looked highly-dubious if any of his seven rivals were going to catch him and so it proved. Summoner held on well to defeat Noverre by one-and-a-half lengths.

Godolphin’s one-two in Saturday’s big-race continued their recent run of success although the Maktoum family’s racing entity would probably have preferred their more fancied runner to win.

Hills completed a magnificent 152-1 double in the next race on Saturday’s programme when the Alec Stewart-trained Mowaadah completed a treble by winning the Summit At Lloyd’s Rosemary Rated Stakes Listed Handicap, proving a head too good for Fallen Star.

Unfortunately for punters here at Ascot today, both Spencer and Hills are missing from the action.

Instead they may care to latch on to riders David Kinsella or Dane O’Neill. The former, who is attached to Eric Wheeler’s Pangbourne-based yard, did himself no harm at all in winning yesterday’s showcase handicap, the Tote Trifecta Stakes, at the odds of 40/1 (£130.10 on the Tote) to give the 21-year-old his 19th success of the season in Britain.

Today Kinsella has four rides - Dancing Mystery (3.10pm), Martin’s Sunset (3.45pm), Bawsian (4.20pm) and Vintage Style (4.55pm).

Of this quartet Dancing Mystery and Bawsian would appear to have the best claims, but after yesterday’s shock winner perhaps racegoers would be wise not to discount any of the four.

Dane O’Neill posted his half-century of wins on Friday when partnering Madame Boulangere, trained by Richard Hannon, to another long-priced success at 16/1 (£33.20 on the Tote) in the Watership Down Stud Sales Race.

This victory, which O’Neill described as ‘his best win of the season,’ was especially pleasing for the rider as he returned to England at the beginning of 2001 after a relatively-disappointing time in Hong Kong.

O’Neill makes the journey to Ascot today for just one ride on Hannon’s Forest Dancer in the Mail On Sunday Mile Final Handicap (3.45pm). The three-year-old scored at Newbury in July and is racing off a mark just 3lb higher today.

With no trainer having more than one winner on the first two days of the BETDAQ Festival of Racing, it might be a good idea to concentrate on the handlers responsible for saddling yesterday’s two Group One winners.

Saeed bin Suroor, who had the one-two in yesterday’s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, has no runners at Ascot today but Luca Cumani, whose juvenile filly Gossamer remained unbeaten in three starts in the Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile, sends out two representatives.

Boreas runs in the opening Group Three Royal Court Theatre Cumberland Lodge Stakes (2.00pm), while Jumaireyah participates in the BETDAQ Handicap (4.20pm), which Cumani is attempting to win for the fifth time.

The former has not been able to get his head in front so far this season, but he was successful when running away with a Listed race at the back-end of last year on heavy ground.

Jumaireyah is an interesting contender as she won her last start at Doncaster earlier this month under a fine ride from Jamie Spencer, who is substituted today by up-and-coming apprentice Fran Ferris, who takes an all-important 7lb off her back.

The trainer has won four of the last 15 runnings - Casey (1988), Tidemark (1991), Ridaiyma (1997) and Vicious Circle two seasons ago.
