FIFTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
THE QUEEN ELIZABETH II STAKES
PACEMAKER SUMMONS 33/1 SHOCK
Godolphin’s pacemaker Summoner pulled off a 33/1 shock in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes when, ridden by Richard Hills, he led from pillar to post with the field failing to come back to him.
The four-year-old prevailed by a length and a half from stablemate Noverre and the duo’s trainer Saeed bin Suroor said: “Everybody thought about Noverre before the race but at the same time Summoner is a nice improving horse.
“He did a nice bit of work last time although I can see it is a surprise today.
“I wasn’t worried about the ground for Noverre, he had it in France last time and handled it very well working in Newmarket.”
Hills added: “I’m just pleased to win a Group One. He’s a nice horse and I’ve done it in this race before on Maroof (66/1 winner in 1994).
“A lot of times pacemakers have won before and I was there to ensure a good pace - my orders from the trainer were to make a good gallop and not look round.
“Two out I’ve quickened up well and didn’t hear much behind me. Give him his due, he’s brave and done it well.”
Noverre’s rider Frankie Dettori joked: “I picked the wrong one!”

SIMON CRISFORD
Simon Crisford, the Goldolphin racing manager, talking about Godolphin’s first and second in the feature Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, 33/1 chance Summoner and 2/1 favourite Noverre, said: “There have been questions marks about whether you should run pacemakers or not. I think that result showed you should run them - there is no doubt about it.
“Summoner was running on his merits. Any pacemaker we have ever run has always run on its merits. Bad horses will not do a job in any Group One race as pacemakers - you have to run quality horses as pacemakers.
“Summoner will not act as pacemaker any more - he gets elevated into the first 11. Noverre will go for the Breeders’ Cup while Summoner will holiday in Dubai and come back next year.
“Noverre will probably go for the Breeders’ Cup Mile - he is really best on fast ground and then he can use his turn of foot. He has great acceleration. That going today has really blunted his turn of foot. He is a far better horse than Summoner.
“The whole idea of pacemakers is that if you don’t follow them then you must accept it when the pacemaker wins, because the pacemakers are good. If you let them get away from you on an easy lead then fine - if you sit a bit too far back you are not going to catch them.
“The jockeys have got to follow pacemakers - if they don’t then there is no point in having a pacemaker.
“Sheikh Hamdan has confirmed today that Sakhee runs in the Arc so we are looking forward to that - we haven’t decided whether he will have a pacemaker.
“At the end of the day Frankie (Dettori on Noverre) felt that he was sitting in third place and close enough - he said the other horse was going too fast for him. Summoner was pinging going into the race and really peaked. Next time around you will find that Noverre will beat him easily. Both are very good horses but Noverre is a better horse than Summoner.
“Our pacemakers can win these races because they have that sort of quality - they are there to be followed.
“We would have much preferred Noverre to win because obviously he is the top three-year-old in our stable. Summoner is an older horse who came to us in the winter and is a really nice horse and he has shown today that if you allow him to get on an easy lead and let him bowl along in front and everybody ignores him then he is a strong force to be reckoned with.
“From our point of view it is not the right result but we are obviously thrilled to bits to be one-two in the big race. With the ground as it is there is very legitimate sort of thinking behind jockeys who felt that if they are going to go half stride too quick they are not going to get home. It is a very stiff track at the best of times. In conditions like this probably most of the jockeys felt they wouldn’t get home. Richard Hills timed it to perfection. His clock was spot on and he did get home.
“Summoner was always a pacemaker - when we supplemented him we told everyone he was a pacemaker. We have always thought that pacemaker roles are very important and actually it is difficult to understand why there is any talk about pacemaker roles at all. For the last 30 years they have ben used effectively. We use good horses as pacemakers - we don’t use 0-75 handicappers - they are quality horses in their own right.
“The whole idea of a pacemaker is to draw the field with you so you can have the pace in the race according to what your needs are - not to ignore that pace. If you ignore the pace then the horse that is sitting second in the race is the pacemaker. That is probably what happened today.
“A few members of the media asked me about Summoner during the week - I said if the field ignores Summoner and don’t follow him then expect Summoner to run a huge race.
“Noverre is still our best three-year-old and he will go to the Breeders’ Cup whereas Summoner won’t.”

TABOR VERY HAPPY
“I am very pleased with him, he has run very well,” said Michael Tabor after Hawkeye had finished third behind the Godolphin duo of Summoner and favoured Noverre.
“I am sure he will stay in training next year, unless someone comes up with a big offer for him, and I think he will be a very good four-year-old. A mile on good ground will be ideal for him.
“It is possible that he could run in the Dubai Champion Stakes next month. It may be a bit quick for him, though it is three weeks away from now so we shall see what happens.
“What do I think of the result ? You can’t print it !”
SPENCER SUSPENDED
Jamie Spencer’s double day was spoiled to some extent when he received a two- day ban (October 8 and 9) for using his whip with excessive force on Hawkeye’s stablemate Bach, who finished fourth.

HACKNEY EMPIRE ROYAL LODGE STAKES (GROUP 2)
MUTINY TAKES THE BOUNTY
Mutinyonthebounty, Aidan O’Brien’s apparent second string, ran out the one a half length winner of the Hackney Empire Royal Lodge Stakes.
Stable jockey Mick Kinane was aboard High Sierra, by Danehill, while the winner was by Sadler’s Wells, whose progeny relish cut in the ground.
“When I walked the track with Mick before racing we were both worried about High Sierra because Danehills usually like fast ground,” said O’Brien.
“I was very happy with the way Mutinyonthebounty won because he handled the fast ground so well last time that obviously you’re worried on this going.”
O’Brien will be taking his Breeders’ Cup team to Southwell on Wednesday to experience the all-weather surface and added: “We’ll be taking eight or nine horses there including Galileo, Mozart and Black Minnaloushe.
“Galileo is very well and we’ll see how he adapts to an artificial surface. He wasn’t very happy for the next few days after he was beaten in Ireland but is in great form now.”

HACKNEY EMPIRE ROYAL LODGE STAKES
BEATEN BUT UNBOWED
Connections of the two placed colts, Tholjanah and Parasol, were delighted with the efforts of their runners, with Tholjahan’s trainer Marcus Tregoning describing himself as “very pleased. He is a slow maturing horse and he kept on well at the end. He was having to be pushed along some way out but he is also very much like that at home.
“I very much doubt if he will run again this season. He has had a hard race there - they all have in that ground - and I doubt if there will be time to get him ready again for another run.”
Angus Gold, racing manager to the colt’s owner-breeder Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum, shared Tregoning’s sentiments and added: “He is a late maturing colt and still pretty green and immature. He will be a nice staying horse next year - that is what he is bred to be - and he will want every inch of a mile and a half.”
Mick Channon, trainer of third home Parasol, said: “I wish that the rain had stayed away; I would have been much happier without it, but you have to run and he has certainly run his race, though maybe he did not quite get home in the ground. Basically, though, I am very pleased with him and he is a lovely horse.”
The jockeys described the ground as being very soft.

WINNING QUOTES RACE TWO
MEON VALLEY STUD FILLIES’ MILE
GOSSAMER NOW CLEAR GUINEAS FAVOURITE
Gossamer overcame some problems in running to win the Group One Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile In exemplary style and emerge as a warm favourite for next year’s Sagitta 1000 Guineas. Ladbrokes have shortened her from 6-1 to 4-1, and Hills were even more impressed and make her a 3-1 chance.
Impressed also was her trainer Luca Cumani, who enthused that “she is a real gem. She has always been a very good filly and I think that at this stage she is ahead of her full brother Barathea, who went on to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile and the Irish 2,000 Guineas.
“I was worried about this soft ground, which was strange and a new experience for her, and there was a moment approaching the final furlong when it looked as if she might have a bit of a problem getting out to get a run.
“Jamie (Spencer) said afterwards that he knew Frankie (Dettori on Fraulein) would not let him out, so he was aware that he would have to switch back and to go round, but Gossamer was going so well that it just took a bit of time for her to come back and get round Fraulein.
“But when she got clear she won well, and the further she went the further clear she was going. If she had won by half a length I would have been happy, but for her to win like that makes me elated.
“She is a wonderful filly, a real professional and will do anything you ask her to. She will go at any speed and follow any pace and it is a real thrill to have her.
“I know there have been moments when I have had to stand a bit on the outside at places like Ascot in recent years, but thanks to the marvellous support I have had from owners like Mr Leigh, who has been with me for many seasons and sent me some very good horses and the marvellous work done by his team at Eyton Hall and my own staff, I have always felt that if we get the horses who are good enough, we are able to do the job.”
Cumani also laid to rest rumours that Jamie Spencer, who was completing a 29.6-1 double after his first-race success, would not be riding for his stable next season. “There is no question of his leaving us at the moment; that was agreed even before today. He will be stable jockey at Bedford House next year,” he said firmly.
Gossamer’s owner-breeder Gerald Leigh, who is giving all his prize money this year to the charity Cancerbacup, said afterwards that he had been “nervous about all the press we have been getting about this filly, but it is a real privilege to own and have bred one as good as she is. I feel very emotional just at this moment.”
More Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile Quotes
JAMIE SPENCER
Jamie Spencer has ridden the first two winners today, completing a 29.6/1 double on Mutinyonthebounty and Gossamer in the Hackney Empire Royal Lodge Stakes and the Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile respectively.
He said: “Considering I got her (referring to Gossamer) in every pocket today to get her beat she deserves to be favourite (for next year’s classic, the Sagitta 2000 Guineas).
“Frankie (Dettori) was going to sit there until the furlong post so I had to take back. She has quickened so well.
“The ground was just too soft for her because she is not very tall. But she has done it well.
“When she won at Newmarket she quickened really well over six furlongs on good to firm. I think she will be better on nice ground.
“I don’t ride in the last so Frankie is safe for another year!”
MORE LUCA CUMANI
The Newmarket trainer said: “You wait almost all year for a day like this and for the last week or so I have been running the race through my mind and every time it came to the last furlong I just blocked it and said stop - do not tempt fate. Let’s just say we will be a challenging position a furlong out and then she will do the rest. She looked wonderful today.
“Most of Gerald’s horses when they come to us already look the part - they are well bred, very well reared and he has got a fantastic team.
“When she first came she took just a tiny little while to get going with the string and then she looked good and professional.
“At the time of her first start Mr Loder was winning all the two-year-old races and he had one in her first race so everybody thought it was a foregone conclusion. As it turned out, she won well first time out.
“It is a long way to go to the Guineas - I would rather not think that far ahead for now. I just to want savour the day and the moment and relish it for the next couple of weeks.
“Gossamer is definitely a Guineas filly - she has got all the speed in the world and she is a miler like her brother was. She has got fantastic acceleration and there isn’t a race in the book that is better suited to her than the Guineas.”
GERALD LEIGH
Owner/breeder Gerald Leigh said: “The mare has a Nashwan colt foal and she has given me 14 foals. Whether we breed her again depends. She is in very good form but I am not sure she doesn’t deserve a rest. But I haven’t made up my mind about next year’s breeding. We might just let her off - she has been outstanding and so have her daughters and granddaughters and so it goes on. I am a very lucky and privileged man.”
SECOND RACE PLACED QUOTES
MEON VALLEY STUD FILLIES’ MILE (GROUP 1)
ESLOOB PUT AWAY FOR YEAR
Esloob, who made the running in the Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile, will not run again this season after finishing three and three quarter lengths third to impressive winner Gossamer.
Her trainer Marcus Tregoning said: “She ran a very good race and we decided to run her (from the front) because we were worried there was no horse that would definitely make the pace.
“She is from a very good staying family so there was no worry about her staying today’s trip.
“She won’t be out again this season, I shouldn’t think many of those running today will be.”
THIRD RACE WINNING QUOTES
BETDAQ DIADEM STAKES (GROUP 2)
NICE WIN CLARE
The Wokingham Stakes winner Nice One Clare put in a career best performance to take the Group 2 Betdaq Diadem Stakes by a neck from Orientor.
Winning trainer Pip Payne said: “She has always been very nice and is just improving and has come to herself at this time of year. She is heavier now than when she won the Wokingham.
“I was worried about everything, including the ground, although it was softish when she won at Doncaster the other day.
“This is my biggest win in terms of status although financially the Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy was worth more when we won Ù180,000 with Casteddu.
“I’m not quite sure whether she’ll be kept in training next year or retire to stud, it is still up in the air and being debated. There is a possibility that she might go for the Challenge Stakes at Newmarket.”
The winner is named after owner-breeder Noel McGinn’s wife Clare. McGinn, an Irishman based in Esher, has the mare’s dam at stud. She is in foal to Daylami and her Grand Lodge foal will be sold at Tattersalls in December.
PLACED QUOTES RACE THREE
BETDAQ DIADEM STAKES
ORIENTOR DOES SO WELL AGAINST HIS SENIORS
“He has run a terrific race and I am thrilled with him,” said Jim Goldie after his Orientor had been touched off by Nice One Clare in the day’s big sprint as he brushed aside any suggestions that Kieren Fallon might have hit the front too soon on the colt.
“Kieren said that he feared he might not pick up as quickly on this ground as he does when it is faster, and you have to take the gaps when they come for you; if you do not then you might not get the chance again,” said Goldie with reference to Orientor’s liking for being produced as late as possible.
“There is no question of any blame to the jockey; you have to take the chance when it is there and in any event he has run a brilliant race and has been a marvellous servant for us this year.
“When he did his final bit of work before this race he went so well that I felt either he had to be over the top or else he was still improving, but the trouble is that Nice One Clare has also been improving all the season as well.
“I don’t think there is anything more for him this season, but I hope he will be an even better horse for us next year. I think the ideal ground for him is good to soft, and this might just have been a bit too much on the easy side for him. If he can continue to improve next year as he has done this time I hope he will do really well again.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE FOUR
TOTE TRIFECTA HANDICAP
DOWNLAND SHOCKS
MOST OF THE PUNTERS
Downland, who had won only once before in 22 previous attempts, shattered most of the crowd with a 40-1 victory in the seven furlong handicap, but it was not a total surprise to his rider, 5lb claiming apprentice David Kinsella, or to some shrewd judges who took 66-1 about the winner in the morning.
“I thought he had a bit of a chance and I had heard that there had been some money for him this morning, but when I rode him at Haydock last time there was money for him then and he did not run very well,” said Kinsella.
“Sometimes he can be a bit funny going down to the start, but this time he went down well and gave a bit of a buck and a kick so I knew that he was in good form. In the race they did not really go fast enough for him, so I just let him take me there to the front. There were a lot of challengers in the last two furlongs, but every time I gave him a slap he responded for me and ran all the way to the line.”
This was the 19th success of the season and 25th in all for Kinsella, who came to England from his native Ireland two and a half years ago because his friend from home, fellow apprentice Steve Carson, suggested that he should come over and join Eric Wheeler’s stable.
“I shall be staying with Mr Wheeler next year, but it is too early to say at the moment what I shall be doing in the winter. I am, though, very much looking forward to riding Guard Duty for Mr (Martin) Pipe in the Cesarewitch. It is brilliant to get a ride for someone like him in a race like that - he is a trainer everyone wants to be riding for.
“This has been a very good season for me and to win a big race like this as well is brilliant.”
FOURTH RACE PLACED QUOTES
THE TOTE TRIFECTA STAKES
I CRIED IN TWO
James Given felt that I Cried For You, who finished second to Downland in the Tote Trifecta Stakes, was not suited by the way that the race panned out.
“David (Kinsella on Downland) went flat to the boards which made our horse commit,” said Given. “He went from travelling sweetly to everything very quickly so got a bit flat footed and went backwards for a stride or two before recovering.
“But he’s run another good race and will no doubt go up the weights again. He’s already been raised 9lb without winning by the handicapper.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE SIX
SUMMIT AT LLOYD’S ROSEMARY RATED STAKES
HILLS DOUBLES UP
Richard Hills followed his 33-1 success on Summoner in the Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes with a more predictable victory when 7-2 favourite Mowaadah took the fillies’ Listed race to give her jockey a 152-1 double.
“She had to dig deep and Richard said that she always hits a flat spot in a race and that she is a bit inclined to pull up when she hits the front. But she stuck on well there even though she only just held on,” said Angus Gold, racing manager to the winner’s owner-breeder Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum.
Mowaadah’s trainer Alec Stewart was not at Ascot as he is flying to Canada to see Sheikh Hamdan’s Mutaman run in the Canadian International at Woodbine tomorrow.
“He is drawn 12 of 12 which may not be ideal, but the ground is good to soft there and although we used to think that he is best when he is making it, he has shown this year in the Princess of Wales’ Stakes that he does not have to be in front all the way, so maybe that draw is not so much of a problem,” said Gold.
SEVENTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
THE CAPLAN GORDER CARTER STAKES
PEARCE’S OPTIMISM FOR CESAREWITCH
Wave Of Optimism, who finished second in last year’s Tote Cesarewitch, is on course for the Newmarket handicap again after his length and a quarter success in the Caplan Gordon Carter Stakes.
Winning trainer Lydia Pearce said: “He’s so genuine and heads for the Cesarewitch now. Originally Richard Quinn was going to ride him today but when the ground was good to firm we thought he wouldn’t run so Richard booked another ride. It’s a shame for him as he comes to ride the horse out and would have had first priority.
“He loves this ground which is why we said he would only run with significant overnight rain and it was perfect for him today.”
John Akehurst, trainer of third-placed Red Ramona, said: “I thought he was going to win turning for home but he couldn’t quite do enough. Two and a quarter miles in the Cesareewitch and ground like this will suit him well and I could see him being in the first four.”
GOING NEWS AT 10 AM
Following persistent rain overnight and through the morning, the ground at 10am was described as
GOOD TO SOFT, SOFT IN PLACES.
Ascot Clerk of the Course and Director of Racing Nick Cheyne said: “Up to 10am we had 14 millimetres (just over half an inch) of rain and it is raining as I speak. I think that there is a good chance that the track will ride soft.
“The forecast is that it should clear up later in the day and be dry through the night, but it looks as if there will be more rain tomorrow morning.”
GOING NEWS AT 11.30 AM
The going at 11.30am was changed to
SOFT
from GOOD TO SOFT, SOFT IN PLACES.
Ascot Clerk of the Course and Director of Racing Nick Cheyne said at 11.30am: “There has been another 2.5 millimetres of rain on top of the 14 millimetres we had up to 10am.
“The rain has now stopped and the forecast is that it should clear up later in the day and be dry through the night, but it looks as if there will be more rain tomorrow morning.”
ONLY FOUR RIDES FOR DETTORI AFTER UNVEILING STATUE
The withdrawals of Vision Of Night from the BETDAQ Diadem Stakes (3.05pm) and Aunty Rose from the Summit at Lloyd’s Rosemary Rated Stakes (4.55pm) mean that Frankie Dettori is now down to just four rides on the fifth anniversary of his “magnificent Seven” in 1996.
But all four have seriously good chances and Dettori would readily settle for a “Fabulous Four”, though he admits he would have preferred the rain to have stayed away for Noverre in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. “He is a very good horse and he always tries his hardest, but the softer ground may just blunt his turn of speed,” he said today.
“But I have four very good rides (the others are Lahooq, Fraulein and Mr Mahoose) and everything I earn today will be given to DAFA (the charity Direct Aid For Africa), which is being organised by Barney Curley. John Magnier and JP McManus have said that they will match whatever I donate and I shall be encouraging everyone I know to make a contribution.”
Before racing Dettori unveiled the statue which now stands near the main entrance to the course and commemorates his amazing achievement of five years ago.
The ceremony was introduced by Lord Hartington, former Senior Steward of the Jockey Club and first chairman of the BHB, and now Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot, who referred to the “great occasion” which it marks.
The statue is of Dettori performing one of his famous flying dismounts and after pulling the chord to reveal it, Dettori jumped up on to the plinth and kissed the statue before jumping back down to the ground. He was draped in the Union Jack and the flag of his native Italy as he looked back at “one of the days which changed my life.”
TODAY’S CROWD
Today’s crowd came to 17,957, down 3.2% on last year’s Saturday attendance
of 18,557.
