LOGIC IN TOP FORM FOR NEWMARKET TEST
Mick Channon's stable star, QUEEN'S LOGIC, the unbeaten winner of three races this season and one of the favourites for next year's Sagitta 1000 Guineas, is reported bang on course for the £150,000 Shadwell Stud Cheveley Park Stakes (Group 1) at Newmarket next Tuesday (2nd October), the first day of the Cambridgeshire Meeting.
"She's in great form," said Channon this morning. "In fact she's so well I just wish the race was tomorrow! Whatever happens on Tuesday it'll be her last outing of the season."
After an impressive win in a Newbury maiden, QUEEN'S LOGIC landed the Queen Mary (Group 3) at Royal Ascot and followed up with a very smooth victory in the Peugeot Lowther Stakes (Group 2) at York last month.
Channon may also be represented in the other big two-year-old race at Newmarket next week, the £150,000 Middle Park Stakes (Group 1) next Thursday. FUNFAIR WANE, owned by Kevin Keegan and his wife Jean, would be taking a big step up in class, but Channon said "there is a chance he could go for it."
DONCASTER EBF NURSERY - RESULT TO STAND
After careful examination of the Rules in question, the Stewards of the Jockey Club are of the view that the E.B.F. Carrie Red Fillies' Nursery, run at Doncaster on Wednesday 12th September, should not be declared void, and that the result be allowed to stand.
The matter was referred to the Jockey Club by the Doncaster Stewards following their enquiry into the race being started from the incorrect position and being run over a distance of 6 furlongs rather than 6 ½ furlongs.
Had an objection been lodged prior to the announcement of "weighed-in", the racecourse stewards would have had to have declared the race void under Rule 170 (iv). However, objections under that rule are only considered if made before the "weighed-in" announcement.
CHELTENHAM MOVES TOWARD THE £4-MILLION MARK
Prize money at Cheltenham Racecourse, the home of National Hunt racing, takes another big jump for the 2001/02 season to £3,800,000, up £400,000 (+12%) on the £3.4 million which would have been offered last season.
The 2002 National Hunt Festival, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, March 12, 13 and 14, has prize money topping £2 million for the first time, with £2,030,000 advertised for 20 races - an average of over £100,000 per contest.
The Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup's total prize fund is £300,000, an increase of £10,000, while the value of the Smurfit Champion Hurdle has gone up by the same amount to £270,000, with the Queen Mother Champion Chase having a bigger boost of £20,000 to £220,000. The high-profile Gold Card series, with its final on the first day, is seeking a sponsor.
Increases in percentage terms are even higher outside the Festival and all races (other than hunter chases) run between November and April have minimum values of at least £12,000 added, a 20% increase, while novice chases are worth at least £17,500 added.
Cheltenham's season begins next month with the two-day meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 30 and 31.
The Open 2001, worth £484,500 over the three days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 9, 10 and 11, with the feature Thomas Pink Gold Cup reaching £100,000 for the first time, was the subject of a release yesterday - go to the news section of www.cheltenham.co.uk to see the full details.
The Tripleprint Gold Cup meeting on Friday and Saturday, December 14 and 15, has a huge £408,000 on offer after more major increases and is the worthy follow-up to The Open.
The feature Tripleprint Gold Cup leaps to £100,000 from £80,000, while Victor Chandler will sponsor the Bula Hurdle for the first time. The Victor Chandler Bula Hurdle is being run at £75,000, an amazing 87.5% rise over the £40,000 in 2000, and is already the target of the top four-year-old of last season, Jair Du Cochet. Cheltenham's second cross country race of the season, sponsored by Sporting Index like the first on November 9, has moved from its January 1 slot to December 14 and become a handicap.
The two-day meeting on Monday, December 31, 2001, and Tuesday, January 1, 2002, has prize money of significantly over £100,000 on each day.
Pillar Property Chase Day on Saturday, January 26, 2002, the last Cheltenham fixture before the National Hunt Festival, has plenty of opportunities for Festival hopefuls, including the £75,000 feature event which was won by See More Business in 2001 and Looks Like Trouble in 2000.
The two-day April meeting, on Wednesday and Thursday, April 17 & 18, offers over £250,000 in prize money for the first time, while the season concludes with the evening hunter chase fixture on May 1, 2002.
Edward Gillespie, Cheltenham's Managing Director, commented: "Cheltenham has once again increased prize money substantially for the coming season.
"Cheltenham Racecourse, the home of National Hunt racing, is proud of its prize money record and has a long-term commitment to broaden and sustain interest and investment in the sport, to help build National Hunt racing."
SALISBURY'S SEASON CONCLUDES
The 2001 Flat racing season at Salisbury Racecourse reaches its conclusion on Wednesday, October 3, 2001, with a sparkling six-race programme when top jockeys will be in action.
The 13 days of racing so far during 2001 at Salisbury have contributed to a vintage year in terms of both attendances and the quality of the racing.
Jeremy Martin, Clerk of the Course and General Manager at Salisbury, commented: "Throughout the year we have had some excellent racing action here at Salisbury, with good crowds. The Discover Racing day in July was a notable success, attracting a large number of first-time racegoers, and it also had the knock-on effect, increasing attendances at our next five meetings.
"I would like to thank all of the staff at Salisbury for their hard work this year and we look forward to 2002 being even more successful."
All six races on the October 3 card will be sponsored by the City-based spread betting firm Cantor Index.
Action commences at 2.20pm with the EBF/"BET ON THE MOVIES" WITH CANTOR INDEX MAIDEN STAKES over one mile. This contest has been won by some useful performers in the past including Island Sound, Lucido, Courteous and Mystic Knight.
Next up is the £10,000-added CANTOR INDEX "CFDs " CONDITIONS STAKES (2.50pm), a six-furlong event for two-year-olds. Island Sands won this sprint in 1998 for Whitsbury-based David Elsworth before being transferred to the Godolphin operation, for whom he landed the 1999 classic, the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket.
The third race is the most valuable event of the day, the £15,000-added CANTOR SPORT RATED HANDICAP (3.20pm), also over six furlongs. Fire Dome was successful last season for Mill Hill-based Andrew Reid, the only trainer based within Greater London.
Stayers get their chance to shine in the fourth race of the day, the CANTOR SPORT BET ON THE "JOLLIES " HANDICAP (3.50pm) over one mile and six furlongs, while the fifth race of the day, the EBF/CANTOR SPORT "GO AUDLEY HARRISON!" NOVICE STAKES (4.20pm), is another two-year-old affair. Takaroa was victorious in this seven-furlong contest last season for Salisbury director Ian Balding.
Salisbury's final race of the season is the CANTOR SPORT "BOOKINGS!" APPRENTICE HANDICAP (4.50pm) over a mile and a quarter.
Full creche facilities will also be in operation at the meeting and racegoers will be able to view all the action close up on a big screen.
Admission prices are Members £15, Tattersalls £10, Course £5, and, as at all Salisbury's meetings, accompanied children under 16 are admitted FREE. Car parking is also FREE.

GOAL FOR NTRA CHARITIES - NEW YORK HEROES FUND INCREASED TO $2 MILLION
Last Friday, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA), Breeders' Cup Limited and the New York Racing Association (NYRA) announced that, based on initial results, the minimum goal for the NTRA Charities - New York Heroes Fund has been doubled from $1 million to $2 million. The Heroes Fund was established to aid the families of New York firefighters, police officers, emergency services personnel and other victims in the surrounding communities who perished in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11.
In the past week, the NTRA has received pledges from Harry Mangurian ($1 million), Coolmore, Michael Tabor, jockey Michael Kinane and trainer Aidan O'Brien (10 percent of potential winnings in the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships), Tracy Farmer (five percent of potential winnings by Albert the Great in The Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Breeders' Cup Classic), the Meadowlands/New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority (Meadowlands Cup proceeds), Thoroughbred Charities of America ($50,000), Los Alamitos Racecourse ($20,000), Fasig-Tipton (commissions from its Oct. 30
sale at Belmont) and others.
"Based on these leadership commitments, we know our original goal already has been exceeded," said Breeders' Cup President D.G. Van Clief Jr.
As part of the new goal, the NTRA announced that a live auction at the Breeders' Cup Charity Gala, to be held on Friday, Oct. 26, will be enhanced and replace previously scheduled entertainment. The savings and all other proceeds from the Gala will go to the fund.
As previously announced, the NTRA, Breeders' Cup and the New York Racing Association also will dedicate the World Thoroughbred Championships to the memory of those slain and to their survivors. NTRA and NYRA will contribute a portion of each paid admission from the Breeders' Cup to the Heroes Fund, along with a percentage of other revenue in connection with the event, a day of eight international, championship Thoroughbred races televised by NBC in the United States and by other networks throughout the world.
"Our neighboring communities were particularly hard-hit by this tragedy," said NYRA President Terence J. Meyocks, "and we want to offer as much assistance as possible. The initial response has been tremendous, and we strongly support increasing the original goal."
Added NTRA Commissioner Tim Smith, "All parts of the sport and industry from all parts of the country - and, indeed, the world - are contributing to various relief efforts at impressive and gratifying levels. Counting Keeneland's campaign for the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, Sheikh Mohammed's generous $5 million contribution, our own efforts with NYRA, plus many others like the Maryland racetrack, horsemen and breeder coalition to benefit Pentagon attack victims, the sport and business of horseracing likely will contribute at least $8 million in total. And that number is
growing."
A summary of programs and initiatives by the horseracing industry to assist in the relief efforts appears at www.breederscup.com/racingresponds .
Formed in 1999, NTRA Charities is a nonprofit, 501 (c) (3) subsidiary of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association. For more information on the NTRA Charities - New York Heroes Fund or to make a contribution, contact the NTRA's Lexington office, (800) 792-6872, or visit www.ntra.com . MAJOR BREEDERS' CUP PREVIEWS COAST-TO-COAST THIS WEEKEND;
TURF CLASSIC & FLOWER BOWL AT BELMONT AMONG HIGHLIGHTS
A majority of the leading North American-trained contenders for Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships races at Belmont Park on Saturday, Oct. 27, will have their final preps in major stakes over the next two weekends at tracks throughout North America.
The $750,000 Turf Classic Invitational and $500,000 Flower Bowl Invitational at Belmont Saturday will be run over the course and distance of this year's $2 million Breeders' Cup Turf and $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, respectively. The Turf is run at 1 ½ miles with the Filly & Mare Turf at 1 ¼ miles.
Trainer Bill Mott's first Eclipse champion runner was Theatrical (IRE), who won the 1987 Turf Classic and went on to capture the Breeders' Cup Turf at Hollywood Park. Mott saddled Fraise to finish second in the 1992 Turf Classic and first in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Gulfstream in his next start.
Mott appears to have a top prospect for both the Turf Classic and the Breeders' Cup Turf again this year with Centennial Farm's KING CUGAT, the probable favorite Saturday. The four-year-old son of Kingmambo finished second by three-quarters of a length last out in the 12-furlong Sword Dancer Invitational behind With Anticipation after checking repeatedly in the backstretch under regular rider Jerry Bailey. Official Equibase Past Performances for KING CUGAT
The $110,000 Saratoga yearling purchase had won the 11-furlong Bowling Green Handicap at Belmont in his previous start. Last fall, he finished 11th in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Churchill Downs after a troubled trip in which he clipped heels and raced wide from last place for more than a half-mile.
Remarkably, he was beaten by only five lengths in a performance much better than it looks on paper.
Rivals Saturday may include Trillium Stable's JOHN'S CALL, Edmund Gann's TIMBOROA (GB), Robert Schaedle and Bonnie Heath Farm's HONOR GLIDE, John Chandler's CETEWAYO, Ecurie Fabien Ouaki's BONAPARTISTE (FR), Ronald Nicholson and Caesar Kimmel's BLAZING FURY, B. Jenney's WITH THE FLOW and Godolphin Racing, Inc.'s MUTAFAWEQ.
The 10-year-old gelding John's Call won the Turf Classic last year before finishing third to Eclipse champion Kalanisi (IRE) in the Breeders' Cup Turf, beaten by only a half-length. Trained by Tom Voss, the son of Lord at War (ARG) bled when finishing last in the Sword Dancer and has been placed on the anit-bleeding medication Lasix.
The Turf Classic has had considerable impact on the Breeders' Cup Turf over the years, beginning in 1986 when Manila won both races, becoming the first American-trained runner to win the Turf after European-trained Lashkari (GB) and Pebbles (GB) won the first two editions.
The solid favorite in the Flower Bowl is expected to be Edouard de Rothchilds' four-year-old filly ENGLAND'S LEGEND (FR). Trained by Christophe Clement, the daughter of two-time Breeders' Cup Mile winner Lure ran away to a 7 ¾-length victory in Arlington Park's coveted Beverly D. Stakes in her last start, her third straight victory. Official Equibase Past Performances for ENGLAND'S LEGEND (FR).
Her most formidable rival may be Sheikh Maktoum al Maktoum's LAILANI (GB). Trained by Ed Dunlop, the three-year-old daughter of Unfuwain has won all of her six starts this year, including the prestigious Nassau Stakes at Goodwood in early August.

MAJOR STAKES RECAP SEPTEMBER 22-23
Race: $500,000 Super Derby (GI), 3yos, 1 ¼ miles
Track: Louisiana Downs
Finishing Order: 1-OUTOFTHEBOX, 2-E DUBAI, 3-QUADROPHONIC SOUND
Margins: Half, 3, 4
Also ran: DISCREET HERO, ROYAL SPY, UNTIL SUNDOWN, RARE CURE, WOW
Winning Connections: Owner: Bertram, Elaine & Richard Klein; Trainer: Bernie Flint; Jockey: Lonnie Meche Time: 2:06 1/5 (muddy)
Road to the Breeders' Cup Classic - Bertram, Elaine and Richard Klein's three-year-old OUTOFTHEBOX appeared to be going down the Kentucky Derby trail this winter after finishing second to Monarchos in the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park. However, the Bernie Flint-trained son of Montbrook badly injured a foot on the first turn of the Flamingo Stakes at Hialeah as the odds-on favorite. Sidelined for three months, the $135,000 colt, purchased as a two-year-old in the February Ocala Breeder Sales, had a start each in July, August and early September prior to Sunday's Super Derby at Louisiana Downs going a mile-and-a-quarter. For the first mile of the Super Derby, Godolphin Racing, Inc.'s Travers Stakes runner-up E DUBAI ran like the 1-to-2 favorite he was, as Outofthebox trailed early in the field of eight.
However, jockey Lonnie Meche got Outofthebox rolling in the far turn, and he wore down the favorite over the muddy track. Assistant trainer Steve Flint attributed much of Outofthebox's success in his last two starts-he had won an allowance race at Saratoga impressively-to the addition of blinkers.
Race: $400,000 Kentucky Cup Classic (GII), 3yos & up, 1 1/8 miles
Track: Turfway Park
Finishing Order: 1-GUIDED TOUR, 2-BALTO STAR, 3-A FLEETS DANCER
Margins: Neck, 8 ¼, ¾
Also ran: DA DEVIL, PERFORMING MAGIC, FAJARDO
Winning Connections: Owner: Morton Fink; Trainer: Niall O'Callaghan; Jockey: Larry Melancon Time: 1:47 4/5 (fast)
Road to the Breeders' Cup Classic - Morton Fink's five-year-old GUIDED TOUR didn't make much of an impression when he finished up the track in last year's Breeders' Cup Classic, but what a difference a year makes. Saturday at Turfway Park, the Hansel gelding wore down a stubborn three-year-old BALTO STAR to win the Kentucky Cup Classic by a neck. It was the third straight Grade II victory for Guided Tour, following an upset tally over Captain Steve in the Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs in June and a romp in the Washington Park Handicap last out at Arlington Park in July. Winning trainer Niall O'Callaghan did not commit to running in the Classic but said it would be seriously considered. Anstu Stables' three-year-old Balto Star, who won the Spiral Stakes in the spring at Turfway by nearly 13 lengths, most likely will be pointed for the Breeders' Cup Mile. The Glitterman gelding won his only start on turf last out going one mile at Saratoga in wire-to-wire fashion. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Balto Star was a slight choice in Saturday's race over Guided Tour and set the pace until caught in deep stretch. More than eight lengths separated the leaders from their rivals in the six-horse field.
Race: $150,000 Jerome Handicap (GII), 3yos, one mile
Track: Belmont Park
Finishing Order: 1-EXPRESS TOUR, 2-ILLUSIONED, 3-BURNING ROMA
Margins: 5 ½, nose, 2 ¾
Also ran: SCORPION, HERO'S TRIBUTE
Winning Connections: Owner: Godolphin Racing, Inc.; Trainer: Saeed bin Suroor; Jockey: John Velazquez
Time: 1:34 2/5 (fast)
Road to the Breeders' Cup Classic - Godolphin Racing, Inc.'s EXPRESS TOUR was the best two-year-old in South Florida last year, sweeping Calder's Florida Stallion Stakes series for trainer Marty Wolfson. Owner-breeder A.C. (Butch) Silva was made an offer he couldn't refuse from the Maktoum family's Godolphin enterprise for the son of Tour d'Or, who reappeared next winning the $2 million United Arab Emirates Derby in Dubai in late March. Sent to the Kentucky Derby off the one prep, Express Tour finished an unthreatening eighth behind Monarchos and then last of six in the Riva Ridge Stakes on Belmont Day. Trainer Saeed bin Suroor prescribed time off, and his patience was rewarded on Saturday at Belmont Park when Express Tour won the Jerome Handicap by 5 ½ lengths in 1:34 2/5, after reeling off the first six furlongs in 1:09 flat. Assistant trainer Tom Albertrani indicated that the colt might run on Breeders' Cup Day at Belmont, but most likely in the Stuyvesant Handicap on the undercard. Another alternative would be the Discovery Handicap at Aqueduct four days later.
Race: $200,000 Turfway Breeders' Cup Stakes (GIII), f & m, 1 1/16 miles
Track: Turfway Park
Finishing Order: 1-TRIP, 2-PRECIOUS FEATHER, 3-SPAIN
Margins: 3, ¾, half
Also ran: ROYAL FAIR, THE HAPPY HOPPER, MARCH MAGIC, ASHER
Winning Connections: Owner: Claiborne Farm; Trainer: Frank Brothers; Jockey: Craig Perret Time: 1:42 2/5 (fast)
Road to the Breeders' Cup Distaff - The Thoroughbred Corp.'s SPAIN won the Turfway Breeders' Cup Stakes last year as a three-year-old prior to her stunning 55-to-1 upset in the Breeders' Cup Distaff. Saturday, the daughter of Thunder Gulch was the 13-to-10 favorite to win the Turfway race again but finished third after being forced wide in both turns to be beaten by nearly four lengths by Claiborne Farm's TRIP. The four-year-old homebred daughter of Lord at War (ARG) is trained by Frank Brothers and had won both of her previous two races over the Turfway track. Winner of the Chicago Breeders'
Cup Handicap in June, her victory Saturday was the biggest of her career.
Brothers ruled out a start in the Breeders' Cup Distaff, indicating the most likely option would be the Churchill Downs Distaff Handicap on Nov. 3. Trainer D. Wayne Lukas was disappointed with Spain's trip but remains optimistic about her bid for another run in the Breeders' Cup Distaff. Spain came into the race after a fourth-place finish in the seven-furlong Ballerina Handicap at Saratoga in late August, her first start in nearly
five months.
Race: $300,000 Vosburgh Stakes (GI), 3yos & up, seven furlongs
Track: Belmont Park
Finishing Order: 1-LEFT BANK, 2-SQUIRTLE SQUIRT, 3-BIG E E
Margins: Neck, 1, 4 ½
Also ran: SAY FLORIDA SANDY, SLY OLE BUCK, ALANNAN
Winning Connections: Owner: Michael Tabor; Trainer: Todd Pletcher; Jockey: John Velazquez Time: 1:20 3/5 (fast)
Road to the Penske Auto Centers Breeders' Cup Sprint - Michael Tabor's four-year-old LEFT BANK has been threatening to become a top-class performer on several occasions over the last two seasons for trainer Todd Pletcher.
Saturday at Belmont Park, the four-year-old French Deputy colt won the Vosburgh Stakes by a half-length after wearing down David Lanzman's odds-on favorite SQUIRTLE SQUIRT. The rest of the runners in the seven-furlong fixture trailed by nearly 10 lengths. A $600,000 Fasig-Tipton February purchase as a two-year-old, Left Bank is peaking at the right time and will be wheeled back in the Breeders' Cup Sprint, as will Bobby Frankel-trained three-year-old Squirtle Squirt. Official Equibase Past Performances for LEFT BANK.
Race: $147,500 Kentucky Cup Sprint (GII), 3yos, six furlongs
Track: Turfway Park
Finishing Order: 1-SNOW RIDGE, 2-CITY ZIP, 3-DREAM RUN
Margins: Neck, 5 ¼, 9 ½
Also ran: WILD HITS, HOMEM RA
Winning Connections: Owner: Overbrook Farm; Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas; Jockey: Pat Day Time: 1:09 1/5 (fast)
Road to the Penske Auto Centers Breeders' Cup Sprint - Trainer D. Wayne Lukas has had a starter in the Breeders' Cup Sprint nearly every year and won the race in 1988 with Eclipse champion Gulch. The Hall of Fame horseman appears to have a solid candidate for this year's renewal in Overbrook Farm's three-year-old SNOW RIDGE after his neck victory over 3-to-5 favorite CITY ZIP in Saturday's Kentucky Cup Sprint at Turfway Park. A $420,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, Snow Ridge is a son of Tabasco Cat and had won a 'three other than' allowance at Saratoga by six lengths in his previous start. Charles Thompson and partners' City Zip remains on course for the Breeders' Cup, according to trainer Linda Rice.
Race: $100,000 Kentucky Cup Juvenile (GIII), 2yos, 1 1/16 mile
Track: Turfway Park
Finishing Order: 1-REPENT, 2-FRENCH ASSAULT, 3-GOLD DOLLAR
Margins: 1 ½, 8, 3
Also ran: TRUMAN'S RAIDER, SHINING CAREER, HUNTER CRUISE, WATCH ME FIRE
Winning Connections: Owner: Select Stable; Trainer: Kenny McPeek; Jockey: Tony
D'Amico Time: 1:43 3/5 (fast)
Road to the Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile - Trainer Kenny McPeek sent out Tejano Run to finish third behind Timber Country in the 1994 Breeders' Cup Juvenile after the colt had won the Kentucky Cup Juvenile and the Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland. Saturday at Turfway, the trainer saddled Select Stable's two-year-old REPENT to win the Kentucky Cup Juvenile in only the colt's third career start. The son of Louis Quatorze was a $230,000 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling purchase, the most McPeek ever has spent on a horse for a client. Sunday morning, McPeek indicated he would most likely train Repent up to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

Road to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies - Kenneth English and Alan Braun's two-year-old filly PLAYING 'N GOLD has given her connections something to think about after the daughter of Honour and Glory drew away to win the Kentucky Cup Juvenile Fillies by 5 1/2 lengths at Turfway Saturday. Trained by veteran horseman Bob Holthus, the filly, purchased for $87,000 at the February Ocala Breeder Sales as a two-year-old, had won the Ellis Park Debutante by four lengths in her previous start and seems to appreciate a distance of ground. The race was her first around two turns. Official Equibase Past Performances for PLAYING 'N GOLD
TOP WORLD THOROUGHBRED CHAMPIONSHIPS POINT EARNERS
Through September 23, 2001
Top World Thoroughbred Championships points earners appear below. Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships races are limited to 14 starters. World Thoroughbred Championships Points come into play if more than 14 horses are pre-entered for a Breeders' Cup race. In those cases, the top eight point earners automatically qualify into the body of the field. If there is a tie for the eighth spot, the Breeders' Cup Racing Directors/Secretaries Panel will decide which horse shall receive the last automatic bid. The Panel will then rank all the remaining horses in order of preference. After Pre-Entry any vacancies in the fields of the oversubscribed races will be filled in preference order until the time of entry, October 24.
