CANTOR INDEX CHRISTMAS MEETING BOOSTS ASCOT'S NATIONAL HUNT SEASON FEATURING THE LADBROKE HURDLE
The two-day Cantor Index Christmas Meeting, to be run on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd December, was officially launched at Ascot Racecourse yesterday.
The meeting becomes a Friday and Saturday fixture this year for the first time, following the transfer of Ascot's January Friday card to the earlier December slot to create a major pre-Christmas racing attraction. Cantor sponsored the one-day Christmas raceday in 2000 and Ascot is delighted that they have extended their support to the new two-day event.
The total prize money on offer at the inaugural 2001 Cantor Index Christmas Meeting will be in excess of £350,000, compared to £155,000 for the corresponding one-day fixture last year. The £100,000 Ladbroke Hurdle will be run at Ascot for the first time this year following 14 years as one of the premier handicap hurdles in Europe when staged at Leopardstown and it forms the centrepiece of the new Christmas meeting.
The Tote Silver Trophy Handicap Chase, a leading pointer to the Cheltenham Gold Cup and won last year by the top class Legal Right, is increasing in profile every year and provides a top class chase on the same day as The Ladbroke.
"This is a major new National Hunt Meeting and a valuable addition to the racing calendar," said Douglas Erskine-Crum, Chief Executive at Ascot Racecourse.
"We are delighted that Cantor have extended their sponsorship portfolio here and we are confident that the meeting will quickly establish itself as an international celebration of jumps racing. The acquisition of The Ladbroke is a major boost to the National Hunt season at Ascot and with The Tote Silver Trophy going from strength to strength every year, our winter programme has never been stronger."
Before a lunch to launch the Cantor Index Christmas Meeting at Ascot today, Douglas Erskine-Crum called for a moment's silence to remember the many lives lost among the staff at Cantor Index's parent company, Cantor Fitzgerald, at their New York offices last week.
TWO IN RUNNING FOR £31,000 SCOOP6 BONUS PRIZE FUND
The Tote Ayr Gold Cup is the puzzle last weeks two Scoop6 Win fund winners
must overcome if they are to add all or a share of the £31,122 Bonus Prize
Fund to the £19,451 they already have banked following their six out of six
success last Saturday.
Last weekend South Wales Policeman David Hicks and an anonymous Scoop6
punter nudged themselves into joint fourth place on the Scoop6 Big
Winners/Small Stakes Hall of fortune with each landing a £206,707 share of
the Bonus Prize Fund-taking their overall bet winners to in excess of
£212,000.
This Saturday a schoolteacher from Esher in Surrey and a retired punter from
Newbury will look to emulate David's feat, and bag the maximum return from
their £2 lines.
"Both our Bonus Prize Fund players come from areas rich in racing heritage,
and have already proved their own track credentials by picking six out of
six in last weeks bet," said Tote Press Officer, Jeremy Scott.
"By comparison picking one from one tomorrow should be a breeze, and no
doubt both will be buoyed by the success of the small staking/big winning
duo from last Saturday."
