THE RING AND RAIL BOOKMAKERS
HIGHLIGHTED AT CATTERICK
Catterick's September meeting takes place this coming weekend (Saturday, 22 September), starting at 2.10 p.m.
The entire seven-race programme is sponsored by The National Joint Pitch Council, the principal race being the National Joint Pitch Council Handicap Stakes, a contest over one mile and a half.
The NJPC is the organisation responsible for the administration of betting with bookmakers on all of Britain's racecourses. The NJPC's aim is to encourage and promote the development of the on-course betting markets in the ring and on the rails.
Prior to racing on Saturday, there will be a special NJPC 'Roadshow' from the Betting Information Unit, based in the Tattersalls betting ring - designed to entertain and inform racegoers about betting on-course.
There's a wide range of attractions for children in the Course Enclosure including a clown/entertainer, Punch & Judy Show, bouncy castle, ball pool and roundabouts.
SIMON COOPER APPOINTED COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR FOR ATTHERACES
attheraces today announced the appointment of Simon Cooper as Communications Director. Cooper (42) currently Head of International Racing at the Hong Kong Jockey Club and Secretary General of the Asian Racing Federation, will join attheraces with effect from 1 January 2002.
Chris Stoddart, CEO for attheraces, commented: "The Communications Director will have a key role developing our racing content across television, the web and other media related platforms. Simon's racing background and international experience will help him develop successful initiatives and implement them in consultation with the UK racecourses and racing authorities. Internationally, he will support our Commercial Director, Glyn Williams, who also has a strong overseas racing background. Simon's appointment completes the senior management team."
Simon Cooper said: "I am delighted to have been given this opportunity as Communications Director and to be part of the attheraces team. It is a particularly exciting time for British racing, not only in the domestic market, but also internationally. After watching developments in the UK industry from an Asian perspective, I believe that the pooling of the media rights of the 49 racecourses will contribute a sound basis for the future expansion of the sport.
Simon Cooper has been at the Hong Kong Jockey Club since 1994. Previously he was Associate Director, Sponsorship and Marketing Services at the International Racing Bureau. Before that, he worked for Associated Newspapers and held other racing press appointments.
In July 2001, attheraces plc, jointly owned by Arena Leisure, BSkyB, and Channel 4, completed a 10-year agreement with 49 UK racecourses and the BHB for worldwide audio-visual and data rights. The launch of a website offering interactive betting allied to racing sound and pictures is on target for mid-October. The interactive digital television channel will be launched in May 2002. Meanwhile a number of other developments are in hand including a telephone betting service.
