ROTHMANS ROYALS ST LEGER PRESENTATION

The first four home in the 2001 Rothmans Royals St Leger tomorrow will be unsaddled in the parade ring in front of the stands and the presentation will also take place there.

500 CLUB BADGES AVAILABLE ON ROTHMANS ROYALS ST LEGER DAY

There are 500 Club badges left for Rothmans Royals St Leger Day, tomorrow, Saturday, September 15, 2001. There is no more advance booking.

These 500 badges will be made available at the turnstiles from 11am tomorrow Saturday.

Those who are unable to secure Club badges later on during the day will be able to purchase Tattersalls Enclosure tickets.

CROWD AND TOTE UP FOR THIRD SUCCESSIVE DAY

Today's attendance on the third day of the Rothmans Royals St Leger Festival was 8,900 as against 7,800 last year.

The Tote on-course cash pool betting turnover came to £214,193, up 3.8% on the previous year's £205,993.

DRY START TO
DAY THREE

The going at the start of day three of the Rothmans Royals St Leger Festival is officially “GOOD TO SOFT, GOOD IN PLACES”.

Clerk of the Course John Sanderson reported: “We had a dry night in Doncaster and it is a bright sunny start to the day, but at this point in time [10.30am] the going remains the same as we finished on Thursday evening.”

The feature race at Doncaster today is the Rothmans Royals Champagne Stakes, a Group 2 contest for two-year-olds run over seven furlongs and a likely pointer to next season’s Classics. Nine horses are due to go to post.

JOCKEYS COMPLETE
ST LEGER LINE-UP

Jockeys for all 11 runners in tomorrow’s 225th Rothmans Royals St Leger at Doncaster have now been named.

Of the quartet who have been added to the list, Jamie Spencer, Paul Scallan and Neil Callan will all be making their debut in Britain’s final Classic of the season.

Jimmy Fortune, who was second in the race on the Barry Hills-trained High And Low in 1998, completes the line-up.

Spencer, 21, partners the Aidan O’Brien-trained Mediterranean, who won the Tote Ebor Handicap at York on his latest start.

O’Brien, who currently heads the British trainers’ championship, has also recruited Fortune and Scallan, who ride the outsiders Life Match and Saddler’s Creek respectively.

Callan has been booked by Charles Cyzer to ride When In Rome, who won his maiden at Sandown in July. Cyzer trained Bedtime to finish fourth in the 1997 running of the St Leger.

SLIGHT CHANCE
OF SHOWERS

The going at Doncaster Racecourse on day three of the Rothmans Royals St Leger Festival will be “GOOD TO SOFT, GOOD IN PLACES”, when the runners head to post for the first race.

Acting Clerk of the Course James Sanderson, said: “We had a dry night and it’s a fine start to the morning, but there is a 30 per cent chance of a shower today and tonight.

“Either way, I cannot see the ground changing dramatically and there should be no complaints for tomorrow’s Rothmans Royals St Leger.”

After his morning inspection of the ground, Sanderson added: “There is a lot of good ground out there, but marginally more good to soft, hence our official description. The track is in good nick and has taken the first two days of racing really well.

FIVE ST LEGER DEBUTS

A total of five jockeys make their Rothmans Royals St Leger debuts tomorrow - and they include the mighty Mick Kinane, who has an excellent chance of success on the Aidan O’Brien-trained Milan.

Kinane, 42, who rode his first winner in 1975 at Leopardstown, has regularly been engaged in Ireland on Rothmans Royals St Leger Day, but said he was looking forward to his delayed first outing in Britain’s oldest Classic.

The jockey said: “It will be good to add this race to all the other Classics I’ve competed in over the years.”
Asked about his chances of making a winning debut, Kinane was unwilling to be too effusive, and replied: “I’m merely hopeful, as always, where racehorses are concerned.”

Jamie Spencer is half Kinane’s age, but he joins the latter jockey in bidding to win the race for the O’Brien yard when partnering Mediterranean.

The Irish trainer also gives a first ride in the Classic to Paul Scallan, who will be on pacemaker Saddler’s Creek, while Jimmy Fortune, who rides Life Match and completes O’Brien’s jockeys’ quartet, has enjoyed a couple of spins in the Rothmans Royals St Leger and finished second on High And Low for Barry Hills in 1998.

With Frankie Dettori riding Marienbard at The Curragh in the Irish St Leger, Ted Durcan, 28, will gain his first outing in the Doncaster Classic when getting the leg up into Alunissage’s saddle, and the final new boy is Neil Callan, who rides When In Rome for Charles Cyzer.

The most experienced Rothmans Royals St Leger jockey riding in tomorrow’s race is Richard Quinn, with nine outings and two victories, on Snurge in 1990 and Millenary last year.

Champion jockey Kevin Darley, bidding to win the race for Yorkshire on the Mark Johnston-trained And Beyond, has never finished better than fourth in three attempts, while former champion Kieren Fallon will be having his fifth outing in the contest. A runner-up spot on the Jimmy Fitzgerald-trained Sapience in 1989 is Fallon’s best place to date.

The field is completed by Michael Hills, who has an outstanding chance of winning on Mr Combustible. Hills certainly knows his way around the Rothmans Royals St Leger course, having taken part seven times. Hills finished second on Broadway Flyer, trained by his brother John, in 1994.

PARTY ADVANCES
ON SALES RACE

Advance Party, trained by Jeremy Noseda and ridden by Kieren Fallon, swooped late to win the DBS St Leger Yearling Stakes (1.30) on day three of the Rothmans Royals St Leger Festival.

Confined to horses sold at the local bloodstock sales, and a consolation event for those ballotted out of Wednesday’s £200,000 event also sponsored by DBS, this race proved “a good consolation”, for part-owners Anne-Marie and Patrick Burns.

Mr Burns said: “We took this fellow to the sales last year, but he was injured on the day and we bought him back for 17,000gns. Then Jeremy and myself got together to race him.”

A son of Mujadil, who stands at the Rathasker Stud at Naas in Ireland, Mr Burns said Advance Party’s dam stayed a mile and he hoped her son would, too.

Slowly away from the stalls, Advance Party came along the stands rails late in the race to defy Kool, who had made much of the running, by half a length. The first two were drawn in stalls 22 and 20, while third-placed Madame Boulangere ran from stall 17, as high numbers again dominated.

Runner-up Kool, owned by Andy Smith, collected just over £9,000 in prize-money, which goes some way towards his 72,000gns purchase price. That was the top lot at the 2000 DBS St Leger sale, and Smith has currently paid the highest price at this year’s Doncaster event, which enters its final session this evening.

On Wednesday, he paid 105,000gns for a son of Grand Lodge.

LAGUDIN FOR LUCA

A fine piece of timing by Jamie Spencer enabled Lagudin to arrive in good time for victory in the Joy UK Conditions Guaranteed Sweepstakes (2.05).

After the gambled Nooshman made a strike for the line early in the home straight, Aldebarn and then Lagudin came past, as the latter ran out a one-and-a-quarter length winner.

Successful trainer Luca Cumani said: “He’s a nice progressive horse. We’ll look at a Listed race later in the year and next year he might make a Group horse.”

Cumani did not completely rule out a bid for the Cambridgeshire Handicap, run at Newmarket on October 6, and the sponsors of that event reduced Lagudin’s price to 12-1 from 16-1.

Lagudin’s stablemate, Gossamer, will run next in the Fillies’ Mile at Ascot, said Cumani. The filly is currently favourite for next year’s 1,000 Guineas, but the trainer added: “The season’s not finished yet and I’m sure another impressive filly will come out and head the market before long.”

FANNING ON A
SWISS ROLL

Joe Fanning, who rides Yavana’s Pace in tomorrow’s Jefferson Smurfit Memorial Irish St Leger at the Curragh, warmed up for that Group 1 contest with victory on Darasim in the day’s Showcase Handicap at Doncaster, the Tote Exacta Mallard Stakes.

Fanning made all the running on his willing-but-blinkered partner, as the pair repelled sustained challenges from second and third, Ravenswood and Big Moment. That pair are now 14-1 and 16-1 respectively with the sponsors for the Tote Cesarewitch.

Winning trainer Mark Johnston, who also hopes to win tomorrow’s Rothmans Royals St Leger with And Beyond, is in America attending the Keeneland Sales, but his wife Deirdre said: “Joe’s on a roll and I hope he can keep it going tomorrow on Yavana’s Pace.

“He will ride Darasim again a week on Sunday in Switzerland in the Prix du Jockey Club, in which Kevin [Darley] will ride Akbar, the winner of the race last year. Both horses are owned by Markus Graff, who is Swiss.”

Commenting on Darasim’s return to winning ways, Mrs Johnston added: “It was a mistake to leave the blinkers off last time, but he was going so well at home that we tried it. I would like to thank Johnny Murtagh, who rode the horse in Ireland and suggested to Joe that we should let him bowl along in front.”

LAST TO FIRST
FOR DUBAI

Dubai Destination galloped right into next year’s Sagitta 2,000 Guineas picture with a memorable performance in Doncaster’s Group 2 Rothmans Royals Champagne Stakes (3.05).

The victory came at the expense of Rock Of Gibraltar, but it now sets up a real showdown between the two big forces of European racing, Coolmore and Godolphin, in the first colt’s Classic next spring. Dubai Destination is likely to face the Irish team’s Johannesburg at Newmarket.

Ridden by Frankie Dettori, Dubai Destination showed he will be a big danger to that colt, if they line-up on the Rowley Mile, when coming from last to first, winning eased down by a length from Rock Of Gibraltar, with Leo’s Luckyman another four lengths back in third.

Bookmakers make Johannesburg favourite for the Guineas, but immediately after the Champagne Stakes they took different views about Dubai Destination. The Tote make him 5-1 joint-favourite, having eased the Irish colt from 3-1, but Victor Chandler were as big as 12-1 about Sheikh Mohammed’s horse before quickly shortening him in to 8-1.

Ladbrokes make Dubai Destination a 6-1 shot, a point longer than Paddy Power, William Hill go 7-1, while Coral Eurobet offer 8-1.

Frankie Dettori was full of praise for the son of Kingmambo following his Rothmans Royals Champagne Stakes win. The jockey said: “You cannot win from draw one, so we decided to drop him in behind. You need the right horse to do that.

“The pace was very strong and I knew they couldn’t keep that up. We had four lengths to make up and he did that in half a furlong.”

Winning trainer David Loder is at the Keeneland Sales, but assistant Rick Bowman said: “I don’t know whether he’ll run again this season, but he’ll be very good next year.

“We’ve one or two nice horses [two-year-olds] still to run and the pecking order keeps changing, but this horse has always been right up there.”

QUICK DOUBLE
FOR DETTORI

After easing home Dubai Destination, Frankie Dettori found himself in a blood-and-guts finish when galvanising Ekraar for a head victory over the Jimmy Fortune-ridden Hill Country in the Amco Corporation Troy Stakes (3.40).

This might be remembered as the finish of the week, after the two horses became involved in a prolonged duel, but it was also notable for some sharp blows from Fortune’s whip, which landed on both Dettori’s back and Ekraar’s blinkered head as the winner challenged along a narrow strip by the far rail.

The stewards looked at film evidence and decided Fortune had not intentionally hit the winner, but they warned him not to repeat the incident.

Four-year-old Ekraar has won a quartet of races, but this was his first success of the season. Sam Avis, representing victorious trainer Saeed Bin Suroor, said: “He’s a horse that’s done us proud in the past. This just shows that the horses are in great form.”

Ekraar’s win completed a 17-1 double for Dettori.

RUMPOLD COMPLETES
DETTORI TREBLE

Frankie Dettori’s winning spree continued with his third straight win of the afternoon, completing a 48.5-1 treble, when Godolphin’s Rumpold landed the CPL Industries Challenge Trophy (4.10).

Caughnawaga led the seven-strong field into the straight, and slowly upped the tempo, but Rumpold came past when it mattered to win going away by two and a half lengths, rewarding Dettori’s many fans at 7-4.

Rumpold was bought by Sheikh Mohammed after winning his debut race at Ascot last summer. He then won a trial in Dubai earlier this year, but disappointed in the 2,000 Guineas and had not run since.

Sam Avis, representing winning trainer Saeed Bin Suroor, said: “He showed an awful lot in Dubai, but was never in the race in the Guineas. The other horse that disappointed in the Guineas, Divine Task, won the other day at Lingfield, so this one is following suit.

“There’s been no real problem with him [Rumpold] but we gave him time to mature. Frankie said the horse tended to run around a bit today and will come on for the run.”

FEARBY DENIES
FRANKIE

Frankie Dettori’s bid for a four-timer on day three of the Rothmans Royals St Leger Festival was thwarted by a late, late surge from the Pat Eddery-ridden Fearby Cross in the closing Coalite Smokeless Fuels Handicap.

Drawn on the rails in stall 22, Fearby Cross was outpaced for most of the five-furlong trip, but came racing through a pack of horses to beat the Dettori-ridden Delegate by three-quarters of a length, with Sharp Hat the same distance back in third.

In what proved to be a rough race, the winner was involved in one of several incidents of bumping, but after a lengthy stewards’ inquiry any interference was deemed accidental and Fearby Cross became a welcome winner for Willie Musson’s Newmarket stable.

Musson said: “The horses were sick in the middle of the year, but they’ve all been running much better in the last couple of weeks.”

The trainer added: “I thought the flat five furlongs might be too quick for him, but the draw helped and Pat gave him a great ride.”

Musson added that next week’s Ayr Silver Cup could be on Fearby Cross’s agenda.
