INDUSTRY-WIDE MINUTE’S SILENCE TOMORROW AFTERNOON
Racing will have the opportunity to pay its further respects to those killed or bereaved in Tuesday’s atrocities in the United States when a minute’s silence is held tomorrow (Friday) at 1.55pm at the three racecourses staging fixtures (Doncaster, Epsom and Worcester).
Industry associations are being advised of the minute’s silence and it is anticipated that many individuals throughout Racing will also pay their respects.
The minute’s silence will be observed by Channel 4 Racing and SIS.
The first race at Worcester, due off at 1.55pm, will be delayed.
These arrangements are in addition to the three-minute Europe-wide period of silence at 11am tomorrow.
PRESS ASSOCIATION APPOINTED OFFICIAL ON-COURSE DATA SUPPLIER
The British Horseracing Board (BHB), on behalf of itself and the Racecourse Association (RCA), has appointed the Press Association (PA) for a period of three years as official supplier of on-course data with effect from 1st May 2002.
Under this arrangement, the PA will supply live betting shows as well as race results, the starting price and other raceday information, such as jockey changes and non-runners.
BHB Managing Director Chris Reynolds said today: “The appointment of the PA will ensure the supply of live raceday information to the media, bookmakers and other users. The PA is an internationally respected organisation with a long involvement in and an intimate knowledge of British racing and, coupled with its independence, is ideally placed to take on this increasingly important role.
“BHB has asked the PA, as part of a commitment to high standards of service, to establish a forum comprising representatives of both the suppliers and users of the information to ensure that customers’ needs are met.
“The appointment represents a key element of BHB and RCA’s strategy of ensuring that a cost-effective and high-quality service is available to suppliers of the racing product to Licensed Betting Offices from 1st May 2002, tenders for the provision of which have been issued this week.”
DONCASTER, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2001
POPULAR LADIES DAY
Today’s attendance on Ladies Day came to 11,200, up 1,300 (+14%) from the 9,900 crowd seen in 2000.
The Tote on-course cash pool betting at Doncaster came to £260,765, up 3.5% on last year’s £251, 933.
GOING EASES
AFTER RAIN
The ground at Doncaster Racecourse has eased for the second day of the Rothmans Royals St Leger Festival, and was officially “GOOD, GOOD TO FIRM IN PLACES”, at 10am.
Showers during racing on the first afternoon of the Festival produced 1.75mm of rain, and further outbreaks overnight saw another 2mm fall on the course up to 6.30am.
Grey skies and rain since then make it possible that the going could ease further before the GNER Doncaster Cup Day (Ladies’ Day) gets underway.
GOING NOW
“GOOD”
The going for day two of the Rothmans Royals St Leger Festival is officially “GOOD” following morning rain.
Acting Clerk of the Course James Sanderson, reported: “We’ve had another millimetre of rain since 6.30am, making a total of 5mm since the start of racing yesterday.
“We’re expecting further outbreaks today and possibly tonight, but the forecast is then for it to clear during the rest of the week.”
On an encouraging note, Sanderson added: “The course drains well and the rain that’s fallen should make it nice for Saturday and the Rothmans Royals St Leger.”
Reflecting on the first day of the meeting, and looking ahead to today’s GNER Doncaster Cup, Sanderson said: “The times were a little slow yesterday, but the wind didn’t help. All the jockeys seemed happy, which is normally a sign that the ground is in good order. We’re looking forward to another cracking afternoon’s racing.”
MONEY FOR
HONOUR
Double Honour, bidding to become another Mark Johnston winner of the GNER Doncaster Cup (3.10), was among early market movers on day two of the Rothmans Royals St Leger Festival.
Ladbrokes were forced to shorten the three-year-old into 3-1 from 7-2, after what a spokesman described as, “a good wide spread of money in our shops”.
The Tote, meanwhile, reported early support for the John Dunlop-trained San Sebastian, who sports a visor for the first time in today’s big stamina test. Seven-year-old San Sebastian was cut to 13-2 from 9-1 by the Tote, which also reports backing for Golden Dragon in the lucky last, the Doncaster Free Press Ladies Day Handicap (4.40). Michael Jarvis’s gelding was cut to 6-1 from 9-1, while Coral also shortened the same horse, making him a
13-2 chance from 8-1.
Punters looking for a quick start in the opener, the Ralph Raper Memorial Prince of Wales Cup (1.30), had latched onto Bollin Eric, cut to 4-1 from 9-2, reported Coral’s Simon Clare, while Paddy Power had received support for Shadow Dancing in the Rothmans Royals May Hill Stakes (2.35). Marcus Tregoning’s filly was reduced to 5-2 from 11-4 by the Irish firm.
LEGER WINNER
BEYOND DREAMS
Eleven horses have been declared for Saturday’s Rothmans Royals St Leger and, while Ireland will be represented by five runners, many believe a locally-trained colt can keep the season’s final Classic in Yorkshire.
And Beyond, trained at Middleham by Mark Johnston, has won three of his four races and will be partnered by champion jockey Kevin Darley. A tempting each-way bet at 14-1 with the Tote (8-1 with Coral), And Beyond is attempting to become the first St Leger winner from the White Rose County since Peleid won for Malton-based Bill Elsey in 1973.
Johnston, busy at the Keeneland Sales in Kentucky, USA, will be absent when And Beyond goes to post, but his wife Deirdre is hoping the yard can improve on its one third place in the Classic, gained by Double Trigger seven years ago.
Mrs Johnston said today: “Training a horse that turns out to be a potential Classic winner is what this game is all about, and it would be a wonderful bonus for Mark and all the staff at Kingsley House to win such a big race at a local track.”
And Beyond, a son of Darshaan, has not raced since winning the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot in June. Explaining his absence since, Mrs Johnston said: “We’ve always had the St Leger in mind and, since Ascot proved to be a very tough race which took him time to get over, we decided to keep him nice and fresh. That way we hope he makes up into a nice four-year-old and becomes a good Cup horse.”
Rain in Doncaster has not unduly ruffled And Beyond’s connections. “He won his first race on soft at Musselburgh and, while this is a totally different class, we’re not too worried about the ground,” said Mrs Johnston. “If it’s good, that would be perfect.”
And Beyond has done more than enough to justify his place in the line-up, but bookmakers are unanimous in suggesting this year’s Rothmans Royals St Leger is a contest between three horses.
Barry Hills’ Mr Combustible and Sir Michael Stoute’s Alexius are vying for top spot in betting lists with Aidan O’Brien’s Milan, one of five Irish runners after the defection of Dermot Weld’s Vinnie Roe.
O’Brien, whose sole St Leger runner to date was the unplaced Rostropovich 12 months ago, will saddle four horses this year, notably his York winners Milan, 3-1 or shorter, and Mediterranean, generally 12-1, who landed the Great Voltigeur Stakes and Tote Ebor Handicap respectively.
In a special bet, Paddy Power offer O’Brien at 9-4 to win the big race with any one of his horses.
Alexius, available at around 11-4, impressed race watchers with his powerful surge in the home straight when winning the Peugeot Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, and he is attempting to become Sir Michael Stoute’s first winner of the Classic, while Mr Combustible, 9-4 or shorter, who was fourth in the Vodafone Derby and a winner at of the Stan James Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury since, is bidding to follow 1994 winner Moonax as a success for Lambourn trainer Barry Hills.
Alunissage, a 14-1 chance, is bidding to give Godolphin a fourth success in the Rothmans Royals St Leger, following on from Classic Cliche in 1995, Nedawi in 1998 and Mutafaweq in 1999, while the supplemented Demophilos, 11/1 or shorter, is the first runner in the final Classic for trainer Amanda Perrett.
BIRTHDAY WIN
FOR EASTERBY
Birthday boy Tim Easterby celebrated a winner on his 40th birthday as Bollin Eric landed a gamble in the opening race on day two of the Rothmans Royals St Leger Festival.
Bollin Eric, a half-brother to Group 3 winner Bollin Joanne, was backed from a morning price of 9-2 down to 5-2 to win the Ralph Raper Memorial Prince of Wales Cup (1.30), and he duly obliged punters, winning by three-quarters of a length from 33-1 outsider Hoax, with Corton half a length back in third.
Easterby’s colt, who was ridden to victory by Robert Winston, is a son of Derby winner Shaamit, and he certainly saw this one mile trip out well, but his dam, Bollin Zola, could not win beyond six furlongs.
The winning trainer said: “I hope this fellow stays further [than a mile] but you cannot tell. We won’t over-race him this year.”
Asked whether he had placed some birthday money on his gambled favourite, Easterby replied emphatically: “It wasn’t my money.” He then added: “The horse has been working tremendously well and he did it well today.
“He was a bit geed up the last time he ran, but he was perfect on this occasion.”
SPEED SO TOUGH
IN PARK STAKES
Tough Speed justified the decision to keep him in training as a four-year-old when battling through wind and rain to snatch the Group 3 GNER White Rose Park Stakes (2.05).
Switched towards the far rail inside the final furlong, Tough Speed responded well for Kieren Fallon, who drove him home for a half-length victory over the Frankie Dettori-ridden China Visit. Late Night Out was two-and-a-half lengths behind in third.
Winning trainer Sir Michael Stoute is buying horses at Keeneland Sales in the USA, but Bruce Raymond, representing winning owner Saeed Suhail, said: “Michael was always confident this was a Group horse and he’s been proved right.
“It has been a very good training performance - the horse’s engine is good but the wheels are not. He suffers from sore feet and has to wear stick-on shoes. It is a credit to Chris the blacksmith and Tony Cromby, the head lad, that the horse is running at all.
“I don’t know where he’ll run next, but he must have good or faster ground.”
This race was delayed by 17 minutes after a large inflatable balloon, tethered in the centre of the course and supporting a television camera, broke partly free from its mooring and was gusted towards the racetrack. The balloon was eventually reeled in, and to their credit, none of the 11-strong field, which was already at the start, seemed unduly worried by the delay.
MAY HILL JOY
FOR CECIL
The Henry Cecil-trained Half Glance earned a 12-1 quote for next year’s 1,000 Guineas from both the Tote and Coral Eurobet after an impressive win in the Rothmans Royals May Hill Stakes (Group 3).
This was Cecil’s 12th win in the race in the past 23 years, a remarkable record made sweeter following a lean summer for the Newmarket trainer. Sent off a 5-2 chance, Half Glance faced a threat from the David Loder-trained Echo River in the final furlong, but she rallied well for Richard Quinn to gain victory by two-and-a-half lengths. The 9-4 favourite Shadow Dancing was another one-and-a-quarter lengths back in third.
Cecil said of Half Glance: “She’s still a bit of a baby and she tended to come on and off the bridle during the race. But she’s improving and got the trip well.
“She’s in the Fillies’ Mile [at Ascot] and the Prix Marcel Boussac, and we’ll have a look at both races. I didn’t see Luca’s filly [Gossamer] win at Goodwood, but if that one turns out as good as they say and goes for one of those two races, we could go for the other option.”
Gossamer is the Tote’s 13-2 favourite for the 2002 Guineas, while Coral Eurobet make her an 8-1 chance.
Reflecting on his successes in the May Hill Stakes, Cecil said: “It’s a race that’s been very good to me. It’s a good course and ideal for fillies at this time of year.”
Cecil also scotched rumours which suggest he might retire, when he said: “I haven’t got that much to run and not many two-year-olds, but I’ll be training next year. I just won’t be taking on the giants so often because I haven’t got that much ammunition.”
ALLELUIA WINS
THE CUP
Alleluia survived a stewards inquiry after showing stamina beyond the capabilities of most three-year-old fillies to land the two-and-a-quarter-mile Group 3 GNER Doncaster Cup (3.10) for Sir Mark Prescott’s Newmarket yard.
Ridden by Jamie Mackay, 14-1 shot Alleluia galloped easily into the lead just over two furlongs out, but drifted across runner-up Rainbow High one-and-a-half furlongs out as that rival mounted a renewed challenge.
Having been slightly impeded, Rainbow High went down by three-quarters of a length, with Bosham Mill two-and-a-half lengths back in third. The stewards deemed Mackay’s manoueuvre had been careless, and while Alleluia was allowed to keep the race, her partner was suspended for three days (22, 24 and 25 September).
In common with many of his training colleagues, Sir Mark is attending the Keeneland Sales in America, but joint-owner/breeder Kirsten Rausing, said the victory was a case of mission accomplished.
Miss Rausing, who is a partner in Alleluia with Sonia Rogers, said: “The aim was to get some black type. Now she has achieved that she could be retired, although I would like her to stay in training next year. I’ll be discussing her future with Sir Mark and Sonia.”
Told by a bookmaker’s representative that Alleluia would be the handicap blot-of-the-year if allowed to run in the Tote Cesarewitch, Miss Rausing smiled and said: “Far be it for me to spoil a good betting opportunity, but I’m only interested in Group races.”
CLARE SO NICE
FOR PAYNE
Nice One Clare, game winner of the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot, showed she is holding her form with a first black-type victory in the betabet Sceptre Stakes (Listed).
Trained by Pip Payne and ridden by Johnny Murtagh, Nice One Clare was driven to a half-length victory over dead-heaters Softly Tread and Alshadiyah.
Ironically, Nice One Clare was nearly withdrawn from the contest after steady rain had eased the going. Payne admitted: “I was very worried about the ground, but I’m glad she took her chance now.
“She might go for the Diomed Stakes at Ascot on September 29 - she seems to like six furlongs at Ascot! I think she’ll have too much weight in the Tote Handicap [at the same course]. The handicapper seems to feel that Tony McCoy wants to ride her.”
Payne added that Nice One Clare would probably be retired at the season’s end. He said: “Her dam [Sarah-Clare] has a lovely foal by Grand Lodge and she’s in foal to Daylami, so the future for the family is very exciting.”
ASTONISHED ATONES
FOR 2000 LAPSE
Speedy gelding Astonished lived up to his name and left connections bewildered when he flopped in the 2000 running of the Kyoto Scarborough Stakes (Listed).
But he put that failure behind him when winning this year’s renewal of the race under Kieren Fallon, to provide another Doncaster winner for Yorkshire trainer Lynda Ramsden.
It was also a sweet moment for owner/breeder David Brotherton, who revealed: “That’s the 27th winner that I have owned out of the mare Indigo.”
A half-brother to Bishops Court, five-year-old Astonished maintained family traditions when scraping home with a late flourish to beat Autumnal and Misty Eyed. The first three were separated by two heads.
No reason ever came to light for Astonished’s poor run in the race 12 months ago - he was an odds-on shot - but he has now won three out of four races at Doncaster, and could go for Newmarket’s Rous Stakes next.
LINCOLN FOR CARDINAL
The Kevin Ryan-trained Cardinal Venture won the second and most valuable race of his career when making all the running in the Doncaster Free Press Ladies’ Day Handicap, as day two of the Rothmans Royals St Leger Festival came to a close.
Kicked smartly out of the stalls by Fergal Lynch, Cardinal Venture was soon towing his rivals along, and while challenges came thick and fast in the closing stages, the three-year-old kept his nose in front when it mattered. At the post he was half-a-length superior to Nashaab, with Noble Pursuit one-and-a-half lengths behind in third.
Ryan said: “If you look at the size of him [he’s big] you would have to say he could be a good horse one day.
“He could go to Haydock on Saturday week for a seven-furlong handicap, but in the long-term I’d like to think about bringing him back here for the Lincoln Handicap.”
Commenting on Cardinal Venture’s return to winning form, Ryan added: “He has been a bit disappointing, but we decided to ride him differently today. The idea was to make his mind up for him at halfway, and it seems to have worked.”
GOING EASES
Further steady rain during the afternoon meant that the going was changed after the fifth race on day two of the Rothmans Royals St Leger Festival.
A total of 6mm of rain has fallen since the meeting started, and the going is now officially “GOOD TO SOFT, GOOD IN PLACES”.
LOVELY RITA
Rita Colcombe of Doncaster won the Best Dressed Lady competition, sponsored by Robinson’s of Bawtry and judged in the winner’s enclosure following the GNER Doncaster Cup. The event is a tradition of Ladies’ Day at the Rothmans Royals St Leger Festival. .

INJURED JOCKEYS FUND CHARITY WORKER IS AUGUST LADY OF THE MONTH
Champagne Lanson announces that retiring Newmarket-based Injured Jockeys Fund (IJF) Almoner, Serena Oxley, is the Lanson Lady of the Month for August. The award was made, following last month’s announcement of Serena’s retirement, in recognition of all her hard work and dedication to helping IJF beneficiaries over the past 17 years.
As an almoner for the IJF, Serena has helped over 180 injured jockeys and their widowers, providing care, support and friendship through difficult times. Among those who she has helped are: Richard Fox, Jimmy Uttley, Ronnie Singer, Jon Snaith, Barbara Towler and Fred Cheshire.
Commented Injured Jockeys Fund Chairman, Lord Oaksey: “In her time as IJF Newmarket Almoner, Serena has been confronted by just about every conceivable racing problem. With sympathy and understanding, gained from a lifetime in the sport, she has done her level best to solve them, very nearly always with success. The Fund and its beneficiaries owe her a huge unpayable debt and she is truly a deserving winner of this Lanson award.”
Lord Oaksey will present Serena with her award - three magnums of Lanson Champagne and a certificate - in the Winners Enclosure after the second race on Friday 14 September at the IJF Charity day at Doncaster’s St. Leger meeting.
The Lanson Lady of the Month winners are nominated by the Lanson judging panel of BBC Presenter Clare Balding, Channel 4 Racing Presenter John Francome, Howard Wright (Industry Editor for The Racing Post) and Sandy Murphy (Chief Executive of the AJA).
Serena now joins the Lanson Lady of the Month award winners from earlier in the year to go forward to the final for the Lanson Lady of the Year Award, the winner of which will be announced at The Montcalm Hotel in London on Wednesday 9 January 2002. The list of The Lanson Ladies of the Month to date in 2001 now reads as follows:
January Lady Rebecca and her Stable Lass, Jo Redman Winners of The Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham (27 January)

TORRENTIAL TO STAND IN BRAZIL
French Group 1 winner Torrential has been recently sold to a Syndicate of Brazilian Breeders, and will take stallion duty at Afonso Burlamaqui’s Haras Santa Rita da Serra, Tijucas do Sul, state of Parana, Brazil. With his first three years old at the track, the ¾ brother of the successful sire Fapianno began his stallion career in 1997 at Gainsborough Farm near Versailles, Ky.
Renato Gameiro from Albatroz Bloodstock, based in Lexington, Ky was the agent for the purchase on behalf of Haras Santa Rita da Serra, Haras Santa Maria de Araras, Haras Tributo a Opera, Haras Curitibano, Haras Valente and Haras LLC The Brazilian bloodstock agent said about this purchase; “Was the right time for Brazilians breeders invest in a stallion with this pedigree, stud record and physical type as Torrential. Gulch, his sire, sired also the 2001 North American leading stallion Thunder Gulch. The descendents of Mr. Prospector like Roy, Jarraar, Dodge, Lode and Choctaw Ridge are doing very well in the Brazilian breeding. Beeing a ¾ brother of Fappiano do not hurt him and we are very happy that Gainsborough Farm was kind enough to make possible this happens for us.”
The nine years old Torrential (Gulch and Killaloe, by Dr. Fager), winner at three of the Prix Jean Prat (Fr–grI) and second at the American Derby (gr II), finished his short career winning three of six races. Torrential shuttled to Australia for three South Hemisphere seasons. His first crop is running now in Australia and New Zealand.
