THE VALUE BETTING COLUMN EVERY SATURDAY

SUNLEY RATED STAKES (HANDICAP), 5F, SANDOWN, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2001

GOING: Good

1) (1) 0405 Vicious Dancer Richard Whitaker 3-9-07 Kevin Darley
Ran a fair fifth at York's Ebor Meeting last time out but may find a couple too good. (16 H, T).

2) (6) 1000 Shoeshine BoyBrian Meehan 3-9-05 Gabriel Hannon (7)
A winner at Thirsk in May but has not shone on his last three starts, most recently when 14th at York. Others preferred. (25 general)

3) (13) 6010 The TraderMichael Blanshard 3-9-03 Fergus Sweeney
Went up 8lb for Newbury win on August 18 and handicapper looked to have his measure last time out at Epsom. On same mark here and not well drawn. (9/2 T)

4) (10) 1001 Smokin BeauJohn Cullinan 4-9-03 Matt Henry
Has been in great heart this season, winning at Goodwood a week ago by a neck. Should put up another bold show. (6 general)

5) (2) 3003 AmbitiousKen Ivory 6-8-13 Dane O'Neill
Third behind useful Ghazal in a Yarmouth conditions event on Sunday and could sneak into frame. (14 H, L)

6) (4) 000- Dashing Blue Ian Balding 8-8-11 Tony Clark
Belated seasonal debut for this popular eight-year-old but asking a lot to beat race-fit rivals at his age. (33 H, L)

7) (8) 0400 Henry Hall Nigel Tinkler 5-8-11 Kim Tinkler
Travels down from Yorkshire and has run better than his form figures suggest this season. Not out of it. (14 H, L)

8) (14) 1231 Jessica's Dream James Given 3-8-10 Micky Fenton
Progressive three-year-old who won at York's Ebor Meeting and bookies taking no chances. (4 L)

9) (12) 0020 Annette Vallon Peter Harris 4-8-08 Richard Quinn
Good second at Newbury on August 5 although weakened at same course 13 days later. Very well-regarded and very interesting. (8 T)

10) (9) 0000 Leozian Ed Dunlop 3-8-07 Kieren Fallon
Got left in the stalls at Epsom on Monday and has put in some eye-catching efforts this season. Kieren Fallon booked and can't be counted out. (8 T, L)
11) (5) 5010 Sunley Sense Mick Channon 5-8-07 Steve Drowne
Had first win for three years at Sandown on August 19 but has been beaten since and cannot be confidently fancied here. (14 H)

12) (7) 5261 Connect Mark Tompkins 4-8-07 Ted Durcan
Carries a 3lb penalty for success at Yarmouth on Sunday and in good form. Good chance. (12 H, L)

13) (3) 5504 Bandanna Ron Hodges 4-8-07 Chris Rutter
Races from 3lb out of handicap and others preferred. (25 L)

14) (11) 6320 Rita's Rock Ape Roy Brotherton 6-8-07 Ian Mongan
Tough mare who loves fast ground but up against it from 4lb out of handicap. (25 L)

Conclusion A typically trappy sprint which has plenty of value. Annette Vallon, being 8/1, looks most tempting. Henry Hall and Connect are both good-priced each-way shots.

Happy punting punters!
