ROA/totesport OWNER SPONSORSHIP SCHEME INCREASED TO £200,000

MEMBERS of the Racehorse Owners Association have been given a major boost with the decision by totesport to increase its sponsorship deal covering up to 1,000 of their horses by a third.

The four sponsorship schemes - now worth £50,000 more at a total of £200,000 - cover up to 250 horses each for 12 months, with the next one starting on 1 September.

It means that those association members whose colours carry the totesport logo can register their racing activity as a business for VAT purposes and so qualify to recover their costs on racehorse purchase, training fees and expenses.

Since the scheme's inception, the totesport branding has been worn more than 4,500 times on British racecourses, and carried to victory on almost 500 occasions. Horses carrying the logos have included Young Mick, Fantasia and Zidane on the Flat, and Philson Run and Take The Stand over jumps.

ROA president Paul Dixon said: "We are indebted to totesport for their increased support of this invaluable scheme. It is of huge benefit both to our members and to the racing industry in general as it helps to underpin the enormously important VAT registration scheme for owners.

"At a time of economic difficulty for many in the racing industry, it is of tremendous assistance.

"After the events of recent days concerning other major bookmakers, it is important for racehorse owners - as well as everyone else with the sport's best interests at heart - to remember how much of a contribution that totesport makes to racing. Every punter should consider that before they place any bet."

Trevor Beaumont, chief executive of totesport, said: "We are delighted to increase our contribution to the ROA/totesport owner sponsorship scheme particularly in these difficult times. It demonstrates the Tote's continued support of a very key part of the racing industry and of our commitment to British racing. I'm pleased that over the years the scheme has proved most worthwhile to both owners and the Tote."

Each scheme offers a payment to owners for the sponsorship of their colours for a 12-month period, and there is an additional one-off payment if a horse runs in a Class A race during the year.

In the case of partnership horses, ROA members must own at least 50% of the horse. Applications are processed on a first-come first-served basis, and there are no costs to an owner for joining a totesport scheme.

ROA members interesting in joining one of the schemes should contact Keely Brewer at the association's head office on 020 7408 0903.
