GLORIOUS CONCLUSION TO GOODWOOD’S GREAT WEEK
Top-class racing, wonderful weather, happy racegoers and contented competitors made sure Glorious Goodwood 2006 will be remembered for all the right reasons.
At the conclusion of the five-day meeting, Goodwood Racecourse’s managing director Rod Fabricius made special thanks to the BBC, which has been broadcasting from the course for half a century, and to the race sponsors, and he congratulated hard-working racecourse staff who ensured the event passed without a serious hitch. He singled out the groundstaff team, under clerk of the course Seamus Buckley, for particular praise.
Fabricius said: “Seamus and his team have achieved good to firm ground throughout the week, and there has been nothing but praise from the jockeys and trainers. There have been three course records.”
With two Group One races and nine other contests at Group level, Glorious Goodwood provides a stream of quality for connoisseurs throughout the week. Fabricius singled out the top-grade victories achieved by Court Masterpiece in the Cantor Spreadfair Sussex Stakes, and by Ouija Board In the Vodafone Nassau Stakes, for their lasting impression, saying: “The Vodafone Nassau will go down as one of the great races staged at Goodwood. It was most memorable and a great way to bring the curtain down on five really great days of racing.
“Court Masterpiece is obviously a very robust and determined character and it was a very brave to go through that gap on the rail.
“The Vodafone Stewards’ Cup was as competitive as ever and the draw seems to have been borne out by the fact that the fancied horses drew high numbers and high numbers have featured in the result. The trainers made the decision about where to go and it was another great result for Yorkshire and the team behind Borderlescott, including his trio of Scottish owners.
“We’ve also seen a couple of really promising two-year-olds in Stategic Prince, who won the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes on Wednesday, and Hamoody, who took the Sterling Insurance Richmond Stakes on Friday.”
While reviewing the number of spectators that passed through Goodwood’s turnstiles, Fabricius acknowledged the numbers were down on last year, but said this was entirely expected. He explained: “Twelve months ago Ascot was closed, the Royal Meeting took place at York and the three-day King George VI meeting, which this year was held last weekend, was transferred.
“With Ascot back in business our numbers were bound to be affected, but we have worked within comfortable crowd capacities, a catchphrase that’s very important to Goodwood. We don’t want racegoers to be jostled and unable to get a view of racing or find difficulty in getting a drink or something to eat. We did see some big numbers last year because of Ascot’s closure and we’ve now reverted much more to levels that are in keeping with our Festival Meeting.
“I think racegoers have enjoyed themselves and we’ve been blessed with weather that was so much better than last year. The girls in their summer frocks and the men in their panama hats are so much a part of the Goodwood experience and are what we like to see.
“The sponsors have made a big contribution to underwriting prize money, and we look forward to building on what we have achieved with them and in other innovations at the meeting. The strawberries and cream have been very popular in the Richmond Enclosure and I expect the ‘strawberry lawn’ to return in the future.
“We’ll sit down and look at all the elements of this year’s Glorious Goodwood, although we’ve been delighted with the way it’s worked out and very grateful to a large team of people who have made it possible.”
DETTORI CROWNED CHAMPION OF GLORIOUS GOODWOOD
Frankie Dettori was today crowned Racing UK’s leading jockey at Glorious Goodwood 2006 with a tally of five winners.
Dettori received a trophy and cheque for £1,500 for the Injured Jockey’s Fund from Lester Piggott and Racing UK’s Lydia Hislop, and then said: “It’s been a good week for me and the horses have run well - I’ve won five races and only ballsed one up, so that’s not a bad statistic.”
Reflecting on his final-day triumph on Ouija Board in the Vodafone Nassau Stakes, Dettori said: “I’m glad the crowd enjoyed it, because it was hard work for me. She’s a great mare and you’ve got to give credit to the second [Alexander Goldrun] as well. It’s great for the connections of Ouija Board - Lord and Lady Derby and Ed Dunlop and his team.
“She always runs her best and that’s what we like to see in racing. I can’t wait to go home and watch a re-run of the race. I didn’t sleep very well last night worrying about the race, but the Ouija got me out of trouble.”

BOOKMAKER REACTION
Ben Clarke of bookmakers William Hill reacted to the end of Glorious Goodwood 2006.
He said: “It has been a tough week but we managed to get our heads in front on the final day despite nearly 40 per cent of week’s races going the way of the favourites.
“La Cucaracha, Yeats and Road To Love made Thursday a particularly bad day and the Vodafone Stewards’ Cup today was something of a double-edged sword.
“Boderlescott had been a big ante-post gamble but proved to be a fair result on the day and mirrored the topsy-turvy trend of the week.”

FORTUNE LANDS GOODWOOD HAT-TRICK
Jimmy Fortune made it three Glorious Goodwood wins in a row with victory aboard the John Gosden-trained Numeric in the Vodafone Handicap, having taken the last two races on yesterday’s card.
Fortune’s hat-trick began with Fantasy Believer in the Stewards’ Sprint Handicap, a victory that was followed by success aboard Terentia in Friday’s concluding race, the racinguk.tv Handicap, before Numeric took Saturday’s opening contest
The rider settled his mount towards the rear of the 13-runner field in the one mile, three-furlong race, but was forced to sweat aboard the three-year-old, who was denied a clear passage in the final two furlongs before coming with a late run down the far rail to collar New Guinea close home and score by a neck.
He is trained by John Gosden and owned by the Nursery Syndicate of Highclere Thoroughbred Racing.
Fortune said of the 8/1 shot: “This horse is not straightforward that is why he has the blinkers on.
“I had to ride him for a bit of luck, and we got lucky, but the best horse won. He’s very lazy but he got there in the end today.”
FAST GROUND, SAY JOCKEYS IN OPENING RACE
Following a hot and sunny morning several jockeys who rode in the opening contest on the final day of Glorious Goodwood 2006, said the ground is riding a shade faster than yesterday.
Jimmy Fortune, who partnered the winner, Numeric, said: “It’s on the firm side of good to firm.”
Frankie Dettori: “Firm.”
John Egan: “Good to firm.”
Ryan Moore: “It’s on the fast side of good.”
Joe Fanning: “It’s quick.”
Dane O’Neill: “Firm.”
Richard Hills: “It’s on the firm side of good.”
Tom Queally: “They were knocking the top off it yesterday, but I think it’s a little quicker today.”
Martin Dwyer: “Firm, same as yesterday.”
Kevin Darley: “Firm ground today.”
NEW GUINEA CAN PAY HIS WAY
New Guinea was beaten just half a length in the opening Vodafone Handicap, and Roger Varian, on behalf of trainer Michael Jarvis who was saddling runners at Newmarket, said: “We’re very pleased with him - he’s run an honest race, and while we’re disappointed not to win we’re sure he’ll find a handicap before the end of the year.
“He’s consistent, goes on most ground, and off 86 today he’s in a handy bracket to contest plenty of races.”

PRINCE SHOWS SPEED OF LIGHT
FOR JOHNSTON STABLE
Another Mark Johnston winner, his fourth of the week, was achieved when Prince Of Light took this Listed contest on his second appearance at this year’s Glorious Goodwood.
Unplaced behind Iffraaj in the Betfair Cup on day one of the meeting, Prince Of Light showed great tenacity to maintain a sustained gallop in the home straight, shrugging off the persistent effort of runner-up Metropolitan Man.
Johnston’s yard now has 340pts in the Vodafone Stable Challenge worth £1,500 to his grooms. The successful trainer said: “That was his second run of the week and we like to see them bowling along in front with plenty in the tank.
“It’s been a frustrating spring with him. We never had a slightest day wrong with him last year, but this year we’ve had a series of foot problems with abscesses in his feet and when things came right he would lose a shoe, including when he was second at Windsor, so really this is the longest uninterrupted time with him.
“I really thought that going straight back for another race after running earlier in the week would do him good and so it seems. Now he’s run twice in a week so we’ll go home and think about another plan.”
Asked about his horses’ general toughness and willingness to give their all in races, Johnston said: “That’s really an illusion. It’s simple physics, the effort required to accelerate for a horse is huge, so it often looks as though a horse is coming to catch ours, or catch them, but ours is staying on again. If you look at the Turftrax timing you will probably find the other horse accelerates, and the huge effort means it slows down if the post doesn’t come soon enough. In this case [Prince Of Light] if they don’t get to our horse it looks as though our horse is going away again when it’s only maintaining a level speed.
“The best way to run a race is to cover the distance in the fastest time. The way to do that is to run at an even pace.

MAN’S ALL IS NOT ENOUGH
Metropolitan Man gave his all in the Listed Vodafone Thoroughbred Stakes, but it was not enough to collect the spoils as he failed by three-quarters of a length to overhaul Prince Of Light.
The pair were locked in a thrilling tussle throughout the final two furlongs of the mile contest, but a power-packed Martin Dwyer drive was not sufficient to lift David Simcock’s charge to victory.
Dwyer commented: “When I came upsides I thought I might just get by the winner but he has a run a fine race.”
Newmarket trainer Simcock was happy with Metropolitan Man’s effort, saying: “He has run a blinder and the front two have run right to their marks of 109 and 108.
“If he had got past the winner he might have been alright but he couldn’t quite get to him.
“He sweats beforehand but really he is very genuine and straightforward, like his sire.”
The Dr. Fong colt may travel further afield for his next outing, with Simcock considering a cross-channel raid.
He revealed: “We might go a mile and a quarter with him now. There is a 10-furlong race at Deauville in two weeks, which we will have a look at.”
City Of Troy, a one-time classic contender whose Vodafone Derby aspirations ended with a fourth-place effort in the Dee Stakes over 10-furlongs at Chester May, ran his best race of the season in finishing a further neck back in third under Ryan Moore.
Trainer Sir Michael Stoute commented: “Ryan just felt that he did not get a good run, but it was better than his two previous efforts so I’m happy.”
THIRD RACE QUOTES
GROUP ONE VODAFONE NASSAU STAKES
GREAT OUIJA BOARD
Ouija Board once again proved herself the darling of British racing with a pulsating short-head victory over the equally admirable Alexander Goldrun in the Group One Vodafone Nassau Stakes on the final day of Glorious Goodwood.
Both mares were going for their sixth wins at the highest level but it was Lord Derby’s mare who prevailed under Frankie Dettori after a protracted and nail-biting duel down the Goodwood straight.
Ouija Board gained the advantage in the last strides as Alexander Goildrun narrowly held sway for most of the closing stages. Ouija Board was cheered to the hilt out on the course and enjoyed a rousing reception entering the winner’s enclosure where she received three cheers as an elated Dettori performed his trademark flying dismount.
The rider said: “That was a great performance because the other mare went by me. Ouija Board likes a target and she showed great guts to put her head down when it mattered.
“She prefers a target but I couldn’t afford to see the a sprint from the milers. It was dream performance from both fillies. Take nothing away from the second.
“Ouija Board is one of the all-time favourite horses. She is a super filly and one of a kind. She is up there with the best and the last filly I rode who was as good was Balanchine.”
Trainer Ed Dunlop was equally thrilled with the win after thinking victory had slipped away, saying: “I turned to my wife and said, at least she had run well again in a Group One race.
“Credit to the runner-up. They are both outstanding fillies, but Frankie was excellent. It is unusual these days for Ouija Board to take it up that far out and she showed great courage to win. It is amazing. I am not sure of the plan. We have broken all our plans all year long.”
Owner Lord Derby also hailed Ouija Board, commenting: “That was pretty awesome. It was the hottest Vodafone Nassau for years. It was wonderful to see two great and brave mares going for their sixth Group One wins.
“Ouija Board’s consistency, big heart, big lungs and the bravery she displays make her what she is.”
Ouija Board is still on course for the Breeders’ Cup Filly And Mare at Churchill Downs later in the year, but bookmakers reacted by shortening her for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in October. bVC Bet went 10/1 from 14/1 with totesport and William Hill opting to remain at 12/1.

EMOTIONAL WIN
Frankie Dettori, who rode the winner Ouija Board, said: “I knew I was close and I was hoping to be the winner. When the result came out, it was a really, really emotional win.
“It was a shame that there was just one winner as the runner-up fought all the way to the line.
“Ouija Board is an exceptional filly and full credit to everyone and to Lord Derby for keeping her in training. I am very happy be a part of it.”
Ed Dunlop, the successful trainer, said: “I didn’t give Frankie any instructions because we didn’t know what to do - all we knew was that we could not wait at the back as we have done in the past. I am thrilled - congratulations to the owners - what a great day.”
Lord Derby, the winning owner, said: “It was unbelievable to see - gosh she’s a brave mare. What a great battle with two great mares. We flew back from a family holiday and Edward my elder son is very keen on racing.
“He also came for the Princess Royal (Newmarket, September, 2005)when Frankie Dettori won on her there. So Frankie and Edward go together well. Frankie gave her a great ride today. It is amazing the popularity she has and to hear three cheers go up for a horse winning a race.”

Third race quotes
GOLDRUN TAKES SILVER AMID RAPTUROUS APPLAUSE
“I’ve never heard such applause for a runner-up,” said Jim Bolger after his gallant mare Alexander Goldrun returned to unsaddle following a thrilling Vodafone Nassau Stakes.
Alexander Goldrun, who was attempting to win the race for the second successive year, was beaten a short-head by the mighty Ouija Board, with Nannina two lengths further back in third.
Bolger added: “My emotions are fine. I’m very happy with the run - we always knew it was going to be tight and it was just a little tighter than we thought. It was on the nod.
“We have no excuses, certainly not on account of the ground or pace, although maybe if there had been something lunging at her on the outside and there had been a little company out there it might have made a difference. We have no regrets.
“Kevin [Manning] said she gave everything and he’s very happy with her. We had been intending to run in the Irish Champion Stakes and nothing’s that’s happened here need change that. I just hope Ouija Board and Pride and a whole lot of them line up and make it a proper race! We’d be happy to take them on in our back yard!
“She’s the best we’ve had for a couple of years and we’ll miss her when she’s not around although it’s not decided when she’ll be retired.”
John Gosden said of third-placed Nannina: “We’re really thrilled with her run. She had to switch from the inside to the outside and she was only ever going to be third, but we were really pleased with the way she was running on at the finish. This opens up possibilities over 10 furlongs for her, and she’s only a little three-year-old filly so there are races ahead for her - Mrs Thompson has said both this year and next year, so that’s the plan.
“The plan was the Guineas, Ascot and the Nassau, but she didn’t get do well in the Guineas because it rained an inch and a half the night before, but we’ve got her in all the nice races at a mile and now a mile and a quarter. They didn’t go a great pace, but that was the same for all of them.”
Earlier this week it was announced Nannina had tested positive following her victory in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. Gosden said: “We’re all completely mystified why a routine veterinary treatment given for a little mucus on the lungs should end up in the A-sample showing a trace. We did all the correct withdrawals, plus a day, so we were shocked by that - she ran off the same programme in the Falmouth and tested negative there so we’re talking smidgens that don’t affect a horse on raceday.
“In some ways this performance is compensation.”

Fourth race quotes
BORDLESCOTT IS PRIDE OF SCOTLAND IN STEWARDS’
After 35 years in the business Wetherby trainer Robin Bastiman scored his biggest success when Borderlescott clung on under jockey Roston ffrench to win the £100,000 Vodafone Stewards’ Cup by a neck.
Bastiman bought the four-year-old gelding as a yearling and sold him to a trio of Scotsman - James Edgar, Les Donaldson and Scott Kernacha. Their winner’s name is derived from their names, with Edgar being known as Mr Border because his business is called Border Rail and Plant.
Bastiman said: “It’s the best day of my life. This horse doesn’t show anything at home - he just goes about his work, which I like. I didn’t know whether to run him in Ireland [in a Listed race at Fairyhouse where Borderlescott was second to Osterhase] and he had a hard race there, but freshened up well. I’m a believer in running horses when they’re right.
“I was glad to be drawn with the fancied ones, because the far side is the place to be. Everything went well, and Royston produced him just when we wanted him to near the finish.
“I bought him as a yearling for 13,000 guineas at Doncaster because he was a good walker. Jimmy had a horse with me called Sennen Cove and said he wanted another, so I said come down and see this yearling.
“It was the middle of winter and blowing a gale, so we went out into the field and the horse head butted him and I thought there’s no way this fellow is going to buy this horse, but he took a liking to him.
“It would be nice to go to the Ayr Gold Cup with the owners being Scottish, but the handicapper might have something to say. On the other hand he’s only just won [by a neck and a neck from Mutamared and Firenze].
“This is my best day as a trainer, but I’m just the tractor driver these days. I’ve only got 14 horses in but this might do me a bit of good. I must give credit to my son and daughter, Harvey and Rebecca [who rides in the amateurs’ contest at Thirsk today], who do all the work.”
Donaldson said: “We’ve had a very good bet on the horse, but credit must go to Robin and the Bastiman family and Royston - they’ve done a fantastic job on the horse. We’re thrilled - I don’t know what time we’re going back to Scotland, but it might not be tonight.”
Asked about the £48,000 prize for the winner, Kernacha said: “That’ll do for tonight!”
French, who was riding his third winner of the week, said: “I was just praying for the line in the final strides. I never expected to ride a hat-trick this week - it’s a great feeling.”
ALL FINE AND DANDY WITH NICHOLLS’ STEWARDS’ CUP RUNNERS
Thirsk trainer Dandy Nicholls ran five horses in today’s Vodafone Stewards’ Cup, and saw Tax Free finish fifth, one place ahead of stablemate Bahamian Pirate.
They were drawn high, while his other three runners, ran along the stands’ rails from low draws - Continent finished 16th, Peace Offering 17th and Merlin’s Dancer last of the 27 runners.
Nicholls’ wife, Alex Greaves, said: “Pirate ran a blinder, but would have liked softer ground, while Adrian [Nicholls] said the ground was too fast for Tax Free - he’s never won on anything faster than good.
“The others were drawn on the low side and had no chance anyway.
“They’re all well and will be contesting the usual six-furlong sprint handicaps like the Ayr Gold Cup. We’re sad not to win, but they’ve run well.”
FOURTH RACE PLACE QUOTES
VODAFONE STEWARDS’ CUP
RYAN HAPPY WITH “UNLUCKY” RUNNER-UP
Kevin Ryan was thrilled with Vodafone Stewards’ Cup runner-up Mutamared, but felt the six-year-old, who had disappointed on his last start when 25th in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot, was a little unfortunate in being beaten a neck by the victorious Borderlescott.
The Hambleton trainer said of the 12/1 shot: “He was a little bit unlucky as he was stopped in his run. I love to win races but if you get beat you might as well be beaten by a good one.
“I don’t know what went wrong at Ascot. He was just a bit flat that day and he was drawn high anyway, which didn’t help. He has bounced back today though.
“He likes running when he’s fresh. We’ll see how he is when we get home but he’s entered in Ireland next week so we’ll consider that.”
Firenze, the 5/1 market leader, pleased connections with another fine effort in a major handicap, after finishing second in the Wokingham in June. The five-year-old mare crossed the line in third under Frankie Dettori, a neck behind the runner-up Mutamared.
Owner Peter Hopper said: “She ran a great race and there are no excuses. The ground was possibly too fast and we are very proud of her. She’s giving us lots of fun and hopefully she can get some black type.”
Trainer James Fanshawe commented: “Firenze is quite a heavy filly and she just doesn’t let herself down and travel on that ground. Frankie (Dettori) said she got third on pure guts.
“We’ll get her home and see how she is but we may be looking at conditions races rather than handicaps now.”

When the stalls are positioned "low", stall one is placed adjacent to the stands’ rail. When they are placed "high", the highest-numbered stall is placed directly next to the rail on the other side of the course. Because of the large number of runners in the Vodafone Stewards’ Cup, the horses are spread across virtually the whole course.
FIFTH RACE QUOTES
VODAFONE EUROPEAN BREEDERS’FUND MAIDEN STAKES
COX BEATS SECONDITIS
Clive Cox made it into the winner’s enclosure after twice filling the runner-up berth at this year’s Glorious Goodwood Festival, as Kilburn made all to land the Vodafone European Breeders’ Fund Maiden Stakes by half a length from Mariotto.
The Grand Lodge colt, a 25/1 shot, scored at the third attempt in the seven-furlong contest, making up for a disappointing effort last time when a beaten favourite over six furlongs at Newbury.
The winner, drawn in stall one, showed good early pace to grab the rail and set the pace under Philip Robinson, before exhibiting great determination in repelling the challenge of the Mark Johnston-trained runner-up.
Cox, who has seen Dunelight and Perfect Star finish second at the meeting, praised the efforts of horse and jockey, saying: “I was very worried about the draw. There were a lot of green horses in the race and he’d run twice already, so we bit the bullet and went for it. Philip took him across and it was a very nice ride.
“Kilburn showed promise on his debut but I’m not sure what happened last time. He just ran a bit flat. We stepped him up a furlong and he knows his job.
“I think he’s a nice horse and hope he could go on. His future lies over seven furlongs and a mile.
“I’m pleased for owner Dennis Shaw who had Woodcote run a big race in the Vodafone Stewards’ Cup.”
Mark Johnston, trainer of second-placed Mariotto, said: “We are pleased that he has run so well first time out. The fact that we brought him to Goodwood for his debut suggests we think a bit of him.”
Thirsk trainer David Nicholls broke his duck at this year’s Glorious Goodwood when Northern Fling proved too strong for his rivals in this nursery.
Nicholls, who was set to saddle eight runners today, including five in the Vodafone Stewards’ Cup in which he was out of luck, said: “It’s good to get one up at the meeting.
“We ran the horse a couple of days ago when he was third at Kempton when Joe Fanning rode him and he was a bit unlucky there, because an apprentice on his inside shouted ‘my tack’s slipped’.
“Joe looked after him by giving him a bit of room, as you’d expect him to do, but by the time they straightened up Joe was nearly alongside the Desert Orchid statue!
“I wouldn’t have run him today, but Joe said we should. You could tell he was hanging a bit out there and didn’t really like the ground. He’d prefer something with a bit more juice.”
SEVENTH RACE QUOTES
VODAFONE APPRENTICE STAKES
BEHAN’S BUBBLY REWARD
Victoria Behan was showered with champagne after riding her first Goodwood winner aboard Lucayan Dancer in the nine-furlong Vodafone Apprentice handicap, to give her boss Dandy Nicholls a quick-fire double.
The County Kildare rider, 20, made up for partnering the same horse into third place in this race 12 months ago with a cool ride that saw her bring the six-year-old with a creeping rail run to take the lead inside the final quarter mile and hold the challenge of Diktatorial by a short-head.
Behan reported: “That was my first win from four rides here. It was a bit tight on the rail but he was brave.”
The seven-pound claimer won the Gosforth Park Cup aboard Lady O’Reilly’s Peace Offering in June and was entrusted with the ride aboard Smokin Beau in the Audi Q7 Handicap here on Thursday, the pair finishing second at 20/1.
Explaining her background, Behan revealed: “I worked at David Broad’s back home for two years, riding point to pointers and jumpers. When I left school I went to work for Eddie Lynam. I have been with the boss (Nicholls) for a year and a half now.
“The boss and Alex (Greaves) are great to me and give me plenty of opportunities to prove myself.”
Celebrations in the winner’s enclosure were exuberant following the victory of Lucayan Dancer, an 11/2 shot, with the trainer tipping bubbly over the winning rider. The win, which followed Northern Fling’s triumph in the preceding race, enabled Nicholls to end a hitherto frustrating meeting on a high.
Alex Greaves, the trainer’s wife, commented: “I thought we were going home with a blank so it’s great to have the last two winners. It would have been a long ride home without a winner. They’re like buses, they all come along at once!”
JOHNSTON’S AND NICHOLLS’ STAFF GUNNING FOR STABLE CHALLENGE
Pride, honour, cash and a trophy are up for grabs on the final day of Glorious Goodwood when three championships reach a conclusion.
The Vodafone Stable Challenge, a points-based title race with £1,500 for the staff whose horses amass the most points during the five-day festival, looks to be a two-horse race between a couple of Yorkshire stables.
Mark Johnston’s team have won the award four times, including last year, and they currently hold a healthy lead with 290pts. Johnston has four runners today, and with 50pts for a winner, 35pts for a runner-up, 25pts for a third and 10pts for a fourth, the Middleham machine is purring gently towards the winning line.
Their only realistic challenge looks set to come from Dandy Nicholls’ Thirsk-based squad. With 135pts they are some way off the leaders, but with eight runners today they could easily close the gap - both yards are represented in the closing race.
Barry Hills’ staff (160pts) lie second, but they are not represented on today’s card, while third-placed Aidan O’Brien (155pts) has two runners, so his staff cannot catch the leaders.
The only other possible winners are the grooms who work for Richard Hannon (50pts), although it will take an outstanding run of results from the yard’s six runners to come from so far off the pace.
In addition there is a £1,000 bonus for the winning yard if their boss has yet to saddle a British classic winner - Nicholls’ staff qualify.
A separate trainers’ title race - for prestige only - is also at stake. Johnston, with three wins and more places, leads Hills (also 3). Paul Cole, with two wins and two runners today, is one of several other contenders to head the table.
No fewer than eight jockeys are in contention for The Leading Rider Award, sponsored by Racing UK and offering a trophy and cheque for £1,500 to be donated to the Injured Jockeys’ Fund.
Frankie Dettori, with four victories against his name and five rides today - including hotly-fancied Ouija Board and Firenze - holds a strong hand, but Jimmy Fortune (3 wins, five rides today) cannot be discounted.
Off the pace, but not out of contention are Mick Kinane, Alan Munro and Richard Hills (all 1 win, 4 rides) and Ryan Moore (1 win, 6 rides), while Martin Dwyer and Joe Fanning have yet to partner a winner this week, but with five rides apiece could do something sensational today.
Lester Piggott will make the Racing UK award to the successful rider - it is expected the presentation will be made after the 3.40pm race, in which all the contenders will be in action.
GOING REMAINS GOOD TO FIRM
Goodwood Clerk Of the Course, Seamus Buckley, reports no significant change in ground conditions for the fifth and final day of the Glorious Goodwood Festival.
Buckley revealed this morning: “The going remains officially good to firm, with a going stick reading of 9.0. That compares to 8.8 yesterday, which means that the ground is showing signs of drying out slightly.
“We watered part of the round course last night in order to get moisture into areas that were drying out.
“There is a lovely fresh strip on the top bend for the fillies in the Vodafone Nassau Stakes, and I am looking forward to another excellent day’s racing.”

BP= the best price at the time of writing
1(5) -521 Alexander Goldrun Jim Bolger IRE 5-9-05 Kevin Manning
Won this race last year but this is probably a better renewal and she has more to do. BP= 4/1
2(1) -422 Chelsea Rose 35 Con Collins IRE 4-9-05 P Shanahan
Consistent sort and beaten only a neck by Alexander Goldrun last time but on overall form seem to have it to do. BP= 16/1
3(3) -112 Echelon 45 Sir Michael Stoute 4-9-05 Kevin Darley
Consistent sort whose form is just below this level but she did chase home Soviet Song, albeit by two lengths, in a Royal Ascot Group Two last time. Tries this trip for the first time. BP= 16/1
4(7) 3215 Ouija Board Ed Dunlop 5-9-05 Frankie Dettori
She got into all sorts of trouble thanks to her jockey at Sandown last time. This can be a tricky course too but she is better judged on her great Group One victory over Electrocutionist at Royal Ascot. The one to beat but she is a very short price.. BP= 5/4
5(4) -012 Nannina John Gosden 3-8-10 Jimmy Fortune
She came good in the mile Coronation Stakes at Ascot before being second in a slow run Group 1 at Newmarket over the same distance. Must have every chance even though she is trying this trip for the first time. BP= 4/1
6(6) 3035 Nasheej Richard Hannon 3-8-10 Ryan Moore
Another trying this trip for the first time but she is held on a couple of runs by Nannina. BP= 33/1
7(2) -844 Race For The Stars Aidan O’Brien IRE 3-8-10 Mick Kinane
Disappointing on soft ground earlier this season but ran better when fourth to Nannina at Royal Ascot and should be suited by the longer trip. BP= 12/1
Summary
Race For The Stars is excellent value at 12/1 with Aidan O’Brien not running fillies for the sake of it. She is taken to improve
