FOURTH DAY, FRIDAY, AUGUST 4
GORDON ENCLOSURE SOLD OUT FOR TOMORROW
The fifth and final day of the Glorious Goodwood Festival takes place tomorrow, Saturday, August 5, and a big crowd is expected.
Racegoers then will witness two racing highlights, the £100,000 28-runner Vodafone Stewards’ Cup and the Group One Vodafone Nassau Stakes, worth £200,000, which pits Europe’s best 10-furlong fillies and mares against each other.
The Gordon Enclosure is sold out for tomorrow and, with the Richmond Enclosure being for Goodwood’s annual members and their guests, this means the only availability on the day will be in the Lennox Enclosure for which admission costs £17, with accompanied children aged under 17 being admitted free of charge.
The Saturday of Glorious Goodwood is always the most popular of the Festival’s five days, with around 25,000 attending, and it will be no different this year.
Crowds earlier this week have been below last year’s very high levels but this had been anticipated when Goodwood Racecourse drew up plans for 2006.
DAY 2006 2005 +/- +/-%
Thursday 20,641 22,576 - 1,935 (-8.57%)
Wednesday 17,063 19,614 -2,551 (-13.01%)
Tuesday 13,835 15,851 -2,016 (-12.72%)
Rod Fabricius, managing director of Goodwood Racecourse, said today: “Attendances went up to a very high level last year at the Festival meeting mainly because of the closure of Ascot Racecourse for redevelopment, with plenty of Ascot members and racegoers coming to Goodwood instead.
“We knew with the re-opening of Ascot this year that we would lose some of these customers and that has happened.
“The situation improved in percentage terms yesterday and hopefully will again today while we are expecting a near capacity turnout on Saturday.
“The racing has been tremendous so far this week and we have plenty to look forward to with14 races still to come.
“Goodwood prides itself on offering a quality experience to racegoers and deliberately limits capacities to try and ensure this.”
GOODWOOD TO CONTINUE WATERING
Goodwood Clerk of the Course, Seamus Buckley, is happy with the ground after day four of the Glorious Goodwood Festival and plans to water tonight in order to maintain the moisture in the track.
He said: “We are standing up well after four days of racing and the going tomorrow will be good to firm again.
“With dry conditions prevailing, we will water from the mile and a quarter start to the top of the hill to retain the moisture.
“The false running rail will be taken down on the bend to reveal three furlongs of unused ground to help the fillies in the Vodafone Nassau Stakes tomorrow.”
Regarding the draw for the Vodafone Stewards’ Cup, Buckley commented: “It is pretty even across the course and there is hardly anything in it. I am delighted with the result of the Stewards’ Sprint Handicap today in which the winner came low and the runner-up was drawn high. It is a pretty level playing field.”
Single Winner in line for £200,000 with Vodafone Stewards’ Cup as centrepiece
A single winner of tomorrow's totescoop6 could land £200,000 with over £100,000 in the win fund and almost £50,000 in the bonus fund.
Races this weekend come from Goodwood (Vodafone Stewards' Cup), Newmarket and Windsor.
Damian Walker, totepool spokesman, said: "The win fund is building up nicely and the Vodafone Stewards' Cup adds an extra dimension to the bet this week."

MANNING LOST FOR WORDS IN ADMIRATION OF GOLDRUN
Jockey Kevin Manning is gearing up for another special moment with fabulous five-year-old Alexander Goldrun at Glorious Goodwood tomorrow.
Asked about his feelings towards the mare, Manning, 29, pauses, then says: “That’s a really difficult question - it’s like asking a child what they think of their pony. She’s so important to me.”
Twelve months ago the partnership won the Vodafone Nassau Stakes (Gr.1) and tomorrow they bid to win consecutive runnings of the £200,000 contest for fillies and mares. If successful Manning will join Lester Piggott and Richard Quinn in riding a double winner of the race, Piggott having scored on Roussalka in 1974 and ‘75, Quinn matching that on Ruby Tiger in 1991 and ‘92.
Alexander Goldrun has run 27 times, winning ten and collecting £1,774,781 in prize-money. Incredibly, Manning has been on her back in every race - notwithstanding he is stable jockey to trainer Jim Bolger, that is an unusual sequence given suspensions and injuries.
Manning adds of the mare: “She’s very tough and consistent and she has a great appetite for racing. She’s laid back at home, and is not a horse that takes a great deal out of herself. I know the ground will be quicker tomorrow than when she won last year, but ground isn’t an issue for her - other than very heavy ground, and we won’t get that.
“Ouija Board is the obvious danger, but it’s a very competitive race and in a small field it could get tactical. She [Alexander Goldrun] can be a little awkward if she gets too far back in a race, but I rode her handily in the Pretty Polly [a Group 1 contest she won at the Curragh last month]. We held off Chelsea Rose [another contender tomorrow] and I’d be confident of beating her again.”
Manning, who has been out of luck while riding at the Galway Festival this week, has two rides there this evening, flies to Goodwood tomorrow morning, then returns to Galway for more rides later in the day. Alexander Goldrun is not his only mount on the Sussex Downs; he also partners speedy Merlin’s Dancer for trainer Dandy Nicholls in the £100,000 Vodafone Stewards’ Cup.
“I don’t know much about the horse,” said Manning. “I got the ride through my agent and I’m looking forward to taking part in the race. I was third in it last year on Fantasy Believer [when Merlin’s Dancer was fourth], and Dandy’s sprinters are usually pretty good.”
GET READY FOR GLORIOUS GOODWOOD’S ANNUAL WHITE-KNUCKLE RIDE
Saturday’s card at Glorious Goodwood has something for every fan of racing, with a top-class Group 1 event, a quality Listed race and one of the most famous handicaps of the year, the £100,000 Vodafone Stewards’ Cup.
A six-furlong spint run partly downhill, with 28 runners and a big prize at the finishing post, the Vodafone Stewards’ Cup tempo is scalding - if a horse starts slowly or hits trouble in running the game is up. Every stride counts in this white-knuckle ride.
“It’s a fantastic race,” says Damian Walker of totesport. “It’s highly competitive and one of the gambling events of the year. We certainly wouldn’t want a result like 12 months ago when Gift Horse won. Tax Free is the one we fear this time. After he got a good draw in 27 we went 7-1 from 9-1, and we’re currently shorter than most of our rivals, which is a tip in itself for punters. After the draw we also cut Bentong to 9-1 from 11-1, although we’re holding the favourite, Firenze, at 5-1.”
Ladbrokes is more fearful of the James Fanshawe-trained Firenze, and cut her to 4-1 from 5-1 after she gained stall 22. Company representative David Williams added: “Bentong (stall 20) is now 7-1 from 8-1, and we made the same cut to Borderlescott (19), who is currently our worst result. Excusez Moi has been cut to 14-1 from 25-1, yet is still being backed. Sprint handicaps are always popular with punters because so many of the horses race regularly - they become family favourites.”
Ben Clarke of William Hill said: “A lot will depend on the final two races at Glorious Goodwood today. They are both sprints, one over the Stewards’ Cup course, so if the track shows a bias punters will put that into their calculations. Another factor will be the views of the tipsters tomorrow - if they tip a big-priced horse its price will change dramatically and the whole market could take on a different appearance.
“Since the draw was made yesterday the interest has been for horses drawn high. Tax Free (stall 27) is into 8-1 from 10-1, Mutamared (26) is 12-1 from 16-1, Excusez Moi (28) is 14-1 from 18-1, while favourite Firenze (22) is 9-2 from 5-1.
“The Vodafone Stewards’ Cup is popular with seasoned punters - those good judges who know the form and believe they have an edge - and people who like a fiver each-way, because it’s a race with plenty of fancied horses at double-figure prices.”
Paddy Power’s Tony Coleman said the Paul Cole-trained Bentong was being supported, and added: “The horse is solid at 9-1, but that price cannot last,” while Neil Morrice of Stan James, said: “Firenze is now 9-2 from 5-1 and Bentong 7-1 from 8-1, but the biggest mover was Excusez Moi, who is now 16-1 from 20-1.”

Coutts Glorious Stakes (Listed race)
First race quotes
CROSSPEACE FIRST IN FIRST FOR SECOND TIME
Ultra-tough Crosspeace scored his second victory at Glorious Goodwood 2006 when adding this valuable Listed race to his success in the opener, The Sportsman Newspaper Handicap, on day one, Tuesday, August 1.
Once again Royston ffrench was in the saddle on the Mark Johnston-trained four-year-old, who found the step up to a mile and a half no problem following his earlier win over 10 furlongs.
Johnston said: “Maybe we’ve been a bit complicated with this horse in the past, trying to think what the key to him is and suggesting he needs big fields and to weave through horses.
“I just reminded Royston beforehand that he won on November Handicap day last year on heavy ground over a mile and a half so the horse doesn’t need any complications, he just needs a good test of stamina.
“He seems to be best at a mile and a quarter, but he clearly gets the extra two furlongs, so I said make sure there’s no messing about and if somebody’s not going when they straighten up get after him. When the commentator said he’s the only one niggling I thought that’s all right.
“He’s totally game and genuine. He’s had 25 runs and 75% of those he’s finished in the first four.
“This horse has run an awful lot and had a fairly hard season. I think that’s his 12th run this year, so now we’ll pick and choose a bit and look for good prizes. He’s entitled to run in Group races and is more than capable of winning that kind of race.”

TRUE RUN RACE
Royston Ffrench, the winning jockey Crosspeace, said: "We didn't want a tactical affair where they go steady and sprint at the finish.
“I made sure I was always stretching the field and he's run on very well.
“Crosspeace has won over a mile and a quarter and a mile and a half and he just needed a true run race from start to finish."
FIRST RACE QUOTES
COUTTS GLORIOUS STAKES
FOXHAVEN HEADING TO YORK
Foxhaven, runner-up to Crosspeace in the mile and a half Listed Coutts Glorious Stakes, will attempt to go one better in the totesport Ebor at York next time, in which he is set to carry 8st 12lb.
The four-year-old, sent off a 9/1 shot, pleased his trainer Patrick Chamings in finishing a gallant neck behind the winner, and will now head for the Knavesmire handicap over two furlongs further.
Chamings commented: “He will definitely go for the totesport Ebor if the ground is fine. He is a different horse on soft ground.
“He has had a lot of problems and I was bit worried about the ground today, but he has coped with it miles better than I thought he would. He really dug deep.”
Totesport shortened Foxhaven to 12/1 from 25/1 for the race they sponsor, while VC Bet and Blue Square both go 14/1 from 20/1. VC Bet offer 14/1 from 20/1.
GROUND QUOTES
Tom Queally, rider of seventh-placed Honduras, said: The ground is fine, there are no complaints. It’s still quite fast but there is no sting in it.”
Seb Sanders reported: “It is fast ground.”
Ryan Moore stated: “The ground is good to firm.”
Royston Ffrench opined: “It’s a bit loose.”
Alan Munro described the ground as: “A touch quicker than yesterday.”
SECOND RACE QUOTES
GROUP THREE OAK TREE STAKES
RED EVIE SIX IN A ROW
Red Evie made it six wins from as many starts this season with a brilliant last-to-first run under Frankie Dettori that has connections talking of a Group One assault.
The filly, whose winning sequence began in a seven-furlong median auction maiden at Yarmouth on March 29, and incorporated the mile Sandringham Handicap at Royal Ascot last time, took the seven-furlong Group Three Oak Tree Stakes by half a length from Makderah.
Winning trainer Michael Bell reported: “We’re going to Leopardstown next for the Group One Matron Stakes on September 8. Jamie Spencer has previously said she was a Group One filly and to win from where she did today, it looks that way.
“Her owner, Terry Neill, is in Mexico and I was giving him commentary during the race, and two out I said I thought she was going to win.
“It’s fantastic to get a filly like her that improves and improves. She has been amazingly consistent.
“My wife, Georgina, rides her every day and looks after her. Red Evie does very little at home in her exercise and looks after herself, which helps her last in her races. She’s a joy to train and she tries so hard.”
Dettori brought the three-year-old Intikhab filly with a withering run down the outside to pick off her rivals with relative ease, but drifted right in the closing stages, causing interference to Spinning Queen and Cantabria.
The stewards looked into the interference but left the placings unaltered, while handing Dettori a one-day ban for careless riding.

STRAPPING MAKDERAH WILL IMPROVE SAYS TRAINER
Makderah looked booked for another victory when cruising into the lead in the Group 3 Oak Tree Stakes, but she could not withstand Red Evie’s late challenge and was relegated to second.
Angus Gold, representing owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, admitted the filly, ‘doesn’t find a lot off the bridle’, but trainer Marcus Tregoning said he was sure she would strengthen as the year progresses. Makderah was the biggest filly in today’s field.
Tregoning said: “She runs a similar sort of race every time. I think seven furlongs suits her and had the pace been stronger I don’t suppose Frankie [Dettori on Red Evie] would have got into so much trouble. We were drawn one and didn’t want to make the running by rushing her up there and using up too much energy.
“Hopefully, we’ll have better luck next time. The winner is a very good filly - you don’t win that many races off the bounce [this was Red Evie’s sixth successive victory] if you’re not.
“This ground was fine for Makderah, she’d probably handle it a bit softer and I think she’ll strengthen up a bit. She’ll win one of these I’m sure, but she’ll be taking on the colts in future. There are no more seven-furlong races for fillies only unless you go up to Group 1s and she won’t be doing that, so we’ll have to look at the Park Stakes at York and the Hungerford Stakes [at Newbury].”
RACEGOER OK AFTER PADDOCK INCIDENT
A racegoer was slightly injured when a horse parading before the third race, Wise Dennis, lashed out. He suffered a minor cut and abrasions but is otherwise all right. He was standing on the edge of the winner’s enclosure next to the paddock when the incident happened.
totesport Mile (Heritage Handicap formerly known as the Golden Mile)
Third race quotes
TAIT SPECTATES AS SPECTAIT WINS TOTESPORT MILE
New Zealand’s eventing Olympic gold medallist Blyth Tait was at Glorious Goodwood today to watch a horse he bred, Spectait, win the feature event, the £150,000 totesport Mile in a new course record time of 1m 35.61s.
Spectait, a four-year-old gelded son of Spectrum, trained by Sir Mark Prescott and owned by Edward Belcher, was bred by Tait at his Chesterfields Stud near Auckland on New Zealand’s North Island. Three times second at Badminton, Britain’s premier three-day event, Tait was successful at Burghley and won the world championship twice before landing an Olympic gold on his most famous horse, Ready Teddy.
Sir Mark was not at Goodwood today but Belcher said: “I can barely speak, but it’s all down to Blyth and Abi my daughter. She shared a yard with Blyth when they were both eventing - he taught Abi everything and he’s taught me everything and he said you’ve got to buy this horse because it might win something.”
Asked when Sir Mark suggested the totesport mile as a target for Spectait, Belcher said: “Sir Mark never points me any direction. Sir Mark does exactly what Sir Mark wants to do and I’m extremely grateful that he does - he’s a wonderful trainer and a great friend now.”
Seb Sanders, who rode the winner, was partnering his third winner at Glorious Goodwood 2006. He said: “He’s proved what a good horse he can be today. The second horse took a fair bit of getting past, but when I gave my horse a crack he found a length quite quickly and the race was in control.
“That’s my last ride here this week and I’ve had a winner a day so I can’t complain. Goodwood’s been lucky for me in the past few years, but unfortunately I’ve never been champion jockey at the meeting. I’ll try again next year.”
Tait said: “I bought the mare [Shanghai Girl] and shipped her down to New Zealand, then Edward bought her foal. I arrived here yesterday and it was just luck this horse was running. I’m over in Europe for four weeks as manager of the New Zealand eventing team at the World Games in Germany at the end of the month. I don’t ride myself now - I’m past my sell-by-date and retired.”
THIRD RACE QUOTES
totesport MILE
TRAINERS HAPPY WITH PLACED HORSES
Dunelight narrowly missed out in his bid to win two major handicaps in a week, failing by half a length to add the £150,000 totesport Mile to his victory in the London Clubs International Handicap at Ascot on Friday.
The 7/2 favourite made most of the running and battled bravely to try and repel the challenge of Spectait before succumbing to the winner.
Trainer Clive Cox commented: “They broke the course record so that is pretty good and I’m totally happy. I would like to have won, but to come back out after a week and run like that, I’m over the moon.
“He ran today with a 3lb penalty and he goes up another 9lb in future so we will be looking at Listed races now. We have a few possible ideas but we’ll get him home and see how he is.”
Prince of Thebes ran a fine race at 66/1 to finish a further length back in third for trainer John Akehurst.
He said: “He showed good form early on in the season but went off the boil afterwards. He has been showing that he was well in himself again and I had a bit of a fancy for him. He played up in the parade ring at Southwell and again here, which means he is well.
“They broke the track record there and he is going to win one of these nice races one of these days. I have always thought a bit of him but he’s quirky.
“He is in the Shergar Cup Mile next Saturday but that might be too soon. Plans are liquid and we may go abroad - perhaps Germany.”
James Fanshawe, trainer of fourth-placed Sir Gerard, reported: “He ran very well from a shocking draw, so we will take him home and see how he is.”
FOURTH RACE QUOTES
GROUP TWO STERLING INSURANCE RICHMOND STAKES
HAMOODY BATTLES TO GROUP TWO WIN
Hamoody showed battling qualities to land the £70,000 Sterling Insurance Richmond Stakes by a head from the front-running Bodes Galaxy, to earn a 20/1 quote with the sponsor for next year’s Stan James 2000 Guineas.
Alan Munro produced the 5/6 favourite to challenge above the distance but the juvenile took a while to master his opponent in the six-furlong Group Two contest .
Trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam commented: “I was not happy with the way he travelled. We were going to drop him in but he broke well and could not get any cover. With cover he can switch off and he is a better horse when he switches off.
“He will keep improving. He is still a baby. He will relax with cover and all he needs to do is grow up mentally, then we’ll be okay.
“I think he is very good and we will probably wait until the Dewhurst now.”
Asked how the colt compares to stablemate Dutch Art, the trainer replied: “They have never been together. You never compare your friends. They are two very good horses.”
Munro said: “He is a very good horse but he is young and does not know what he is doing yet.
“He travels like a six-furlong horse but he wants seven furlongs. He just needs to grow up and learn to settle.
“The second is a good horse, because he picked up again when we came to him.”
Hamoody is now 25/1 from 33/1 for the 2000 Guineas with William Hill, while Paddy Power leave him unchanged on 25/1. Ladbrokes and VC Bet are unchanged at 33/1.
Bodes Galaxy could finish only second in this prestigious Group 2 contest for juvenile colts and geldings, but being beaten a head by a horse that is now contesting favouritism for next year’s Stan James 2000 Guineas was no disgrace.
After Bodes Galaxy had succumbed by a mere head to odds-on favourite Hamoody, the runner-up’s trainer, Nick Littmoden, said: “The winner had to pull out all the stops to beat us. Ours is a lovely colt and we’ll keep him on the go because he’s learnt what it’s all about.
“I’m sure there’s a Group race in him somewhere and we’ll review plans later in the year. He’s a real smart animal. He’s a chunk of muscle and all heart.
“We’ve got various entries for him, including the Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury and we’ll put him in the Dewhurst Stakes now. He’s durable - you could drop him back to five or step him up to seven furlongs, but six looks good.”
Trainer Mark Johnston is considering a new trip for third-placed Dubai’s Touch. Johnston said: “He’s run a very good race and always does. We’ll probably step him up a furlong or two now, but I’ve no thoughts about any particular race.”
Scottish Equitable/Jockeys Association of Great Britain Nursery Stakes
Fifth race quotes
HALFORD BRINGS UP FIRST GLORIOUS GOODWOOD WIN
Apprentice jockey Marc Halford rode his first Glorious Goodwood winner when Just Dust, trained by David Elsworth, won this nursery.
Halford, 21, was Just Dust’s regular partner when the gelding was trained by his part-breeder, Bill Turner, and he kept the ride after the horse was claimed by Elsworth for £10,000 following a success at Newcastle 17 days ago.
The winning jockey, who hails from Tamworth near Birmingham, said his immediate family have no involvement in racing, although his grandfather, Ted, was a farrier. Halford said: “I’ve ridden for Bill Turner for a couple of years, but I’m based with Mr Elsworth. Before that I did two and a half years with Mick Ryan and was at Meddler Stud with Julian Poulton for 18 months.”
Asked about the victory on Just Dust, Halford said: “I was told to jump out and make it because that’s the way the horse has been doing in recent races.
“He’s been running in cheekpieces, but we left them off today and it worked out. That’s my first Glorious Goodwood winner, although it’s my third at the track. It’s a good feeling to ride one at this meeting.
Elsworth’s travelling head lad, Peter Maughan, said: “The boss has flown here each day and will be here tomorrow, but he stayed in Newmarket today. We bought this horse out of a claimer and he’s done it very well today - he doesn’t look like a horse that needs cheekpieces. He’s a lovely, little horse.
“Marc did well on the horse and is a good, young rider. He was told to jump off and make it, unless something went on, and he rode to orders.”
FIFTH RACE PLACE QUOTES
SCOTTISH EQUITABLE/JOCKEYS’ ASSOCIATION OF GREAT BRITAIN NURSERY
SHERGAR CUP NEXT FOR EDDIE JOCK
Eddie Jock failed to justify 3/1 favouritism in the Scottish Equitable/Jockeys’ Association of Great Britain Nursery, but trainer Michael Bell expressed himself happy with the top-weight’s performance in finishing a length and a half runner-up to Just Dust in the seven-furlong contest.
Bell commented: “He ran on well at the end and he was trying to give 22lb to the winner.
“He will go to the Shergar Cup next week but he was rated 95 here so we will give him a rest after Ascot and look at Listed races for him.”
The Nick Littmoden-trained Follow The Flag, a 7/1 shot, crossed the line a further two and a half lengths adrift.
Joe Norton, representing owners The Follow The Flag Partnership, said: “We are a group of half a dozen friends and we are very happy with that. We will get him home to Nick’s and then see where he goes next.”
SIXTH RACE QUOTES
STEWARDS’ SPRINT HANDICAP
QUINN GAINS FIRST GOODWOOD WIN
John Quinn enjoyed his first Goodwood win as Fantasy Believer took the Stewards’ Sprint Handicap by a length and a half from Idle Power, providing some consolation to the trainer for a series of near misses at the West Sussex course.
Fantasy Believer has twice been placed in the Vodafone Stewards’ Cup itself, finishing runner-up to Pivotal Point in 2004 and third behind Gift Horse 12 months ago.
Quinn said: “It is good to get a first winner at Goodwood. We have had a few seconds and thirds. Smart Predator was third in this and we also had Bigalos Bandit finish fourth in the Betfair Molecomb Stakes.”
The 9/1 shot took up the running on the near side with less than a furlong to race and made sure of victory under a determined Jimmy Fortune drive.
The Malton trainer mapped out future plans: “He will probably go for the Great St Wilfrid at Ripon and then it might be the Ayr Gold Cup, if he is good enough. He would probably need to go up the handicap to get in at Ayr.”
With Fantasy Believer, drawn 12, winning on the stands’ side, and Idle Power taking second-place on the far side from his 21 draw, there appeared to be no significant bias in the race.
Quinn commented: “It is easy to say now, but I didn’t think beforehand that there would be any draw advantage.”
Fortune echoed that view, saying: “We were always going quick both sides, so it is pretty even.
“This is a very good horse on his day and he comes alive when he comes to Goodwood.”
In a horses-for-courses finish a trio of Goodwood specialists battled for top honours in this sprint handicap, as Fantasy Believer just beat Idle Power and Smokin Beau.
Idle Power won this race 12 months ago, and trainer Jim Boyle, who trains 34 horses at Epsom, said: “He loves the track and we love the track. He’s been running blinding races where ever he’s been this year. He’s running off a mark of 90, that’s 15 or 16lb higher than his mark 18 months ago, so we really can’t complain.
“I’d have loved to have had a crack at tomorrow’s Vodafone Stewards’ Cup off 8st 6lb with him, and we’ve only missed the cut by two.
“We pushed just a little too hard the last time he ran, so we gave him a week to 10 days out in a field and it’s freshened him up for this. You do precious little with him, he’s so straightforward. There are a couple of big handicaps that he could run in, but he’s a fun horse and we knew Goodwood was the place to come.”
The winner, although drawn 12, came along the stands’ side (low draw) rail, while the second, third and fourth, opted to race on the far side (high draw). Dandy Nicholls, who trains Smokin Beau, and who chose stall 27 for his hotly-fancied runner Tax Free in tomorrow’s Vodafone Stewards’ Cup, admitted: “I’m really worried now, but we can’t turn back the clock, and we’ve got some runners in the low stalls so we’re covered.
Nine-year-old Smokin Beau was second at this meeting yesterday, but he was fresh enough to run another fine race 24 hours later. Nicholls said: He’s a lovely horse - he’s like me, he gets up in the morning without a care. He’s a real professional. He’s in the Portland Handicap and if we can get him in the Ayr Gold Cup we’ll go there.”

NORTH WALES COMES TO SUSSEX FOR LAST-GASP VICTORY
In a gripping encounter to end day four of Glorious Goodwood, the Ed McMahon-trained filly Terentia narrowly held off the favourite, Buachaill Dona, in this sprint handicap.
McMahon was absent saddling runners at Nottingham, but Terentia’s owner, Dr Hugh Jones from Prestatyn in North Wales, and the filly’s breeder, Fiona Williams, had journeyed to Sussex. Mrs Williams, who keeps three mares at her Wern Ucha Farm, bred Terentia’s dam, Agrippina, then produced today’s filly by using the Darley stallion Diktat.
Dr Jones, a GP and police forensic surgeon, said: “I have an arrangement with Fiona, and bought this filly as a two-year-old then sent her to Ed, who is an excellent trainer, and picks races well.
“He’s trained her to win four races, but we were only hopeful today because she’s usually better on the soft and we were worried about the weight she had to carry.
“This is my first Glorious Goodwood winner and the feeling is absolutely fantastic.”
Jimmy Fortune, who rode the winner, was completing a 149-1 double for the day and has now ridden a hat-trick at Goodwood this week.
Fortune said: “It’s nice to ride winners at these big meetings - any winner is nice, but these big events are special. She [Terentia] had a lot of weight here and her draw wasn’t great but she got across and is a very tough filly.”
GOING REMAINS GOOD TO FIRM
Goodwood Clerk of the Course, Seamus Buckley, reported this morning: “After a dry night we have watered the last mile, and have put down approximately eight millimetres.
“The going remains good to firm, with a going stick reading of 8.8 as opposed to 9 yesterday.
“The course is standing up well and I expect it to ride slightly slower than yesterday.
“The temporary running rail round the lower bend has been removed to provide fresh ground.”
UK’S LEADING SAND SCULPTOR AT GOODWOOD
Sand sculptor Andrew Baynes continues to entertain Goodwood racegoers with his impressive portrait of triple ABN AMRO Goodwood Cup hero Double Trigger, which has been taking shape in the Richmond Enclosure since Tuesday.
Baynes initiated something of a revival in the art form after exhibiting at the Royal Festival Hall in 1993, and this year is the second time that he has showcased his talents at Goodwood Racecourse, having produced a stunning sand likeness of the late Persian Punch in 2004.
He has completed over 70 commissions in the last 11 years including for Disney, Lee Jeans, BBC, Granada TV, The National Theatre and Selfridges, to name a few.
The artist specializes in equine sculptures and installations, explaining: “I can sculpt anything, but I was trying different subject matters and found that the horse is the most magnificent of all creatures.
“I must have entertained three-quarters of a million people in person, and horses have the most impact. I have probably sculpted more horses in sand than anyone else on the planet. There is something endearing about the form. There is an affinity between man and horse. They were instrumental in the development of civilisation.”
Baynes has a firm association with Goodwood and recently appeared at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, when he sculpted 10 cars, one for each decade, to commemorate the centenary of Grand Prix.
He enjoys working at the racecourse and commented: “This is a great environment in which to work. Sculpture is only 50 per cent and communication is the other 50 per cent so I love that fact that people are always stopping to talk. All kindness to Lord March who was insightful enough to book me.””
Two years ago, his Persian Punch sculpture received some unwanted attention when someone jumped on the back of the incomplete work.
Baynes recalls: “I wasn’t angry because the beauty of sand is that it is easy to repair, but if the head had been damaged, then I would have been angry.
“I can sculpt a horse in a day but it takes longer when I am doing a portrait. I look at photographs of Double Trigger in order to get his characteristics, and of course the interaction with the public over the five days here is key to the process.”
The sculptor will head to Cardiff next for a maritime festival and his work can be viewed on www.sandhorse.com.

Strawberry Enclosure Forever....
Glorious Goodwood has always been regarded as the touchstone of summer and to celebrate this, the racecourse has been offering racegoers a fruity little treat: a real taste of summer.
Every day from 3.30-5.30pm, racegoers in the Richmond Enclosure receive a complimentary punnet of strawberries and cream.
A magnificent strawberry display is set up in the heart of the Richmond Enclosure and four elegant Jeeves-like butlers in long tails and white gloves, with admirable grace, style and deference, are on hand to tempt members and their guests with these very English delights.
The Earl of March commented: “Goodwood is synonymous with the English summer season. We wanted to give our guests a special summery treat at the Festvival Meeting. We hope that by offering strawberries and cream, we will add to their enjoyment of a quintessentially English social event."
