EXCUSEZ MOI - I’M FIRST IN VODAFONE STEWARDS’ CUP DRAW

The Clive Brittain-trained Excusez Moi was the first horse to emerge when the draw for Saturday’s £100,000 Stewards’ Cup was made at noon today.

After draw compere Clare Balding randomly selected the four-year-old’s name, Brittain’s representative, former jockey Willie Carson, nominated stall 28, hard against the rail on the far side from the grandstands. The adjacent stall was filled next, when the Dandy Nicholls-trained topweight Tax Free appeared.

Nicholls, who has five runners in the contest, chose 27, a draw from which Patavellian scored three years ago, and he was soon nominating again when Bahamian Pirate emerged and was given stall 25. Nicholls, who won the race as a jockey from stall one on Soba, later chose that trap for Continent, but when speedy Merlin’s Dancer came out he had just three options - and went for stall 11 - while his Peace Offering was the last name picked when 13 was the only option

Trainers and owners were keen to be drawn high or low. The first low-draw nominee, Woodcote, came out fourth and will go into stall four. A well-known pace-setter, he will ensure a good pace on the stands’ side, while ante-post favourite Firenze was the tenth name drawn and her owners, Jan and Peter Hopper, had no hesitation in going for stall 22.

Nicholls’ son, Adrian, will ride Tax Free, of whom the trainer said: “He’s the up-and-coming kid, although things didn’t go right for him last time when he lost a shoe. He’s got the pace to go anywhere. He came out of the draw early and I was happy with 27. I think it’s a lucky stall. A bit of rain would help Continent and Bahamian Pirate, Vicky Behan will ride Peace Offering - she won the Gosforth Cup on him and gets on well with the horse - and Kevin Manning is on Merlin’s. They’re all in good heart and good form.”

Jan Hopper, owner of Firenze (22), said: “We wanted to see where the pace horses were, and were keen to have the far or near rail, but as it’s turned out we think there will be three races, with pace across the course. We’re pleased and expect to see them fan out. If we’d come out first we’d have chosen 22. We need luck but she’s in good form.”

Charles Cruden, an owner with Clive Cox, said of Woodcote (4) and Out After Dark (12): “Clive walked the course last night and felt the ground was a little quicker on the stands’ side. Woodcote front runs so we were pleased to come out of the draw nice and early. We’d have preferred to be lower with Out After Dark, but we came out of the draw late.”

Ollie Cole said of Bentong (20): “Stall 20 was the last high draw available when we came out, but I’m happy with that. There are a lot of fancied horses drawn high. It gives us the opportunity to go right on the far side or three-quarters of the way across in search of better ground.”

Willie Muir, trainer of Texas Gold (2), said : “You’ve got to go very high or very low. I walked all over the course - there’s a very marginal difference between the two sides, but the far side was filling up and the quicker horses - Woodcote, One Putra, Merlin’s Dancer and If Paradise - were on this side. I’m very happy. He got hampered at Ascot last week and he’s jumping out of his skin. If there’s no rain we’re in business.”

Willie Carson, on behalf of Clive Brittain (Excusez Moi, 28), said: “Clive left it to me and I was bit shocked to come out first. On what’s happened in the past the high numbers have an advantage and I made the choice and hoped some fast horses would come out high, too, to help him along. We’ve got Mutamared in 26 to help so I’m happy.”

Fulke Johnson-Houghton, trainer of Beaver Patrol (drawn 17), said: “He’s in very good order and will run well, but I’d have liked to have been drawn a little higher.”

OUIJA BOARD AND ALEXANDER GOLDRUN HEAD VODAFONE NASSAU STAKES, BUT RAJEEM OUT

Five-year-old mares Ouija Board and Alexander Goldrun head a high-class field of seven for Saturday’s Vodafone Nassau Stakes, the second Group 1 race at Glorious Goodwood.

They face stiff competition from the four-year-olds Chelsea Rose and Echelon, while batting on behalf of the classic generation will be Nannina, Nasheej and Race For The Stars. Among those not declared is Rajeem, the recent Group 1 Falmouth Stakes winner, whose infected heel prevented her running at Deauville on Sunday.

Despite her absence the Vodafone Nassau Stakes will be one of the highlights of the year and a race that could determine the order among European fillies and mares.

Ouija Board’s Royal Ascot victory in the Group 1 Prince of Wales’ Stakes was one of the highlights of that meeting, cementing her place as Britain’s top-ranking and most popular distaffer (even allowing for strong competition from Soviet Song), yet she was beaten in the Coral-Eclipse Stakes on her latest start. A luckless passage in that race was a valid excuse, but her fans will be keen
to see her back in the number one spot. She has never run at Goodwood.

In contrast the Jim Bolger-trained Alexander Goldrun is bidding to win the Vodafone Nassau Stakes for the second year - only Roussalka (1975/6) and Ruby Tiger (1991/2) have scored twice in the race since its inception in 1840.

Alexander Goldrun is one of three Irish runners - Con Collins’ Chelsea Rose and Aidan O’Brien’s Race For The Stars being the others - while Britain’s defence of the race is bolstered by two runners for Cheveley Park Stud, Echelon and Nannina. Echelon won Gr.3 events at Lingfield and Epsom this year before finishing second to Soviet Song at Royal Ascot, while Nannina was a hugely impressive winner of the Group 1 Coronation Stakes at the Royal meeting, but subsequently finished second to Rajeem in the Falmouth.

Clive Brittain, Rajeem’s trainer, said today: “The infection hasn’t quite cleared up so she’s back on antibiotics. Our new target is the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket.”

Asked whether, under the old 24-hour declarations process Rajeem might have made the line up, Brittain said: “A lot can happen in 24 hours, but I cannot say she would have come right. It would have been unfair to declare her and then take her out. For me 24-hour declarations are more convenient, but for the good of racing we’ve got to give this system a try.”

GROUND UPDATE

The course will be watered again this evening to help keep Good to Firm conditions ahead of racing tomorrow.

Seamus Buckley, Goodwood’s Clerk of the Course, said: “We’re very pleased with the way the course rode today and our overnight watering policy has been justified in that if we had not carried it out the ground would have been much faster today than yesterday.

“We will water from the mile marker and up the last four furlongs of the straight again this evening to maintain the good-to-firm conditions. The false rail around the lower bend will also be removed to provide a fresh strip of ground.”

TARTOUCHE IN GLORIOUS WIN NUMBER TWO

Tartouche, trained at Angmering by Lady Herries, proved a local hero for the second year running when following up her 2005 victory in this Group 3 race for fillies and mares.

The winner made most of the running, and jockey Seb Sanders said: “I was pleased when Richard Hughes [on unplaced Novellara] came up my inside because it helped me - it was going to be hard work to make all. Then Art Eyes headed me and my mare found another leg and won quite easily in the end.

“She really is a tough filly and I’ve had so much fun on her. That’s the second Group 3 I’ve won on her.

“I’ve won heads and short-heads on this filly four or five times, but she seems to know where the finishing line is and that’s a huge help to me.”

Julian Wilson, representing trainer Lady Herries, said: “I’m so thrilled for Lady Herries and the owners. It was a fantastic ride by Seb, needless to say. It was a terrific achievement by Lady Herries to train this horse to win the race two years running, last year on soft ground and this on good to firm.

“Tartouche looked fantastic - I don’t know why she didn’t get best-turned-out - and Seb just loves this filly. Lady Herries has given up Angmering Park Stud and I think she might be regretting that now because this would be the most lovely filly to breed from.

“She’s been abroad three times. She was very unlucky at Baden-Baden [last time] when they had a hurricane and the stalls didn’t work and she was left standing at the stalls for 20 minutes, then missed the break so she never got into the race. There are races for her at the Curragh or Deauville so we will probably go abroad - she’s not quite Group 1 class but she’s certainly capable of winning a Group 2.”

ART EYES EBOR BID

The David Elsworth-trained Art Eyes was slashed to as short as 12/1 from 20/1 with VC Bet for the totesport Ebor after finishing a close second to Tartouche in the opening Group 3 Lillie Langtry Stakes.

“The Ebor’s certainly an option,” said Elsworth. “But we also have the likes of Balkan Knight - who runs today - and Wunderwood in that race. She’s also in the Melbourne Cup as well so we’ll just have to see.

“She’s a very tough, genuine filly and really kept going today but full credit to the winner.”

Art Eyes remains at 25/1 for the York handicap with William Hill, but is 16/1 from 20/1 with totesport and Stan James, and 16/1 from 25/1 with Paddy Power.

Seb Sanders, who rode Tartouche to win the race, said of the ground: “There’s a lot more good in it than yesterday, there’s a bit more juice. I’d call it good with a bit of good to firm.”

Ryan Moore agreed, calling it “good, good to firm”, Richard Hughes said the ground was similar to yesterday, Jimmy Quinn called it “fast” and Alan Munro said that it was “really nice good ground.”

SECOND RACE WINNING QUOTES
AUDI STAKES (GROUP 3)

CUCARACHA BACK TO BEST

La Cucaracha, winner of last year’s Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes, returned right back to her best to come from nearly last to first to capture the Group 3 Audi Stakes by three-quarters of a length.

“This year she had a bit of a low-grade virus but just came back to herself in time for Royal Ascot,” said winning trainer Barry Hills. “The draw didn’t help her that day but she was only beaten a couple of lengths but I think that race might have put her back again.

“I wasn’t particularly happy before the July Cup but she seemed right back and really ready for it today.”

The mare was trimmed from 10/1 to 4/1 with the sponsor for the VC Bet Nunthorpe Stakes and Hills added: “She’ll go for the Nunthorpe again and maybe Hong Kong if the ground is quick enough. I think it was a mistake not to have gone for the Abbaye last year because the ground was not that bad.”

Michael Hills, the winning jockey, added: "They went very quick. I've got to be patient on my filly and can't get there too soon. I put here on the bridle and said, 'look, get ready for when it happens', and she was there waiting. As soon as the opening half came, I sent her through, and she just took off.

"The trouble was Neil [Callan] was getting away and the others were dying, so I needed to get through them. Luckily a small opening came and I managed to thread through.

"All credit to my father - he said I was on a different filly today, and the signs over the last 10 days have been very, very good. He was exactly spot on. She was working well and ran a good race in the July Cup, and after that race things were different. She really started to sparkle and improve. They're not machines and you just have to wait for them to happen.

"I presume the Nunthorpe is the target and I'd love a crack at the Hong Kong race at the end of the year. She loves fast ground and as long as conditions are right she'd be there."

Neil Callan, rider of the runner-up Desert Lord, said: "The horses are running really well, but this fellow was unfortunate because I felt him leaning off the rail the last half furlong and we realised afterwards that he pulled off a shoe on his near fore.

"Because it is slightly downhill, he can get into his stride very fast - he is a very fast horse, probably the fastest horse I have sat on. He has travelled sweetly for me. When I went past the two (furlong pole) and let him go he actually picked up, and he's gone so quick early on.

"I was unaware it was Michael in behind me but I was going as well as the winner. When I let him down he has actually picked up.

"Kevin (Ryan) has only had him a season. Beaten by a Group One horse like that, we've got to be over the moon, especially as he was only beaten three parts of a length after pulling a shoe off. He won the Dash at Epsom in a fast time so he's a very fast horse, and, hopefully, he's got a bit of youth on his side, so he's good a few years left in him."

BEATEN TRAINERS MORE THAN HAPPY WITH DESERT AND FLAME

Trainers Kevin Ryan and Ed McMahon were delighted with the performances of Desert Lord and Pivotal Flame after their horses took second and third behind Group 1-winning mare La Cucaracha in this highly-competitive sprint.

Ryan said of the imposing Desert Lord, who is now a 14-1 chance from 33-1 for the Group 1 VC Bet Nunthorpe Stakes with the sponsors: “He’s run a blinder, he’s a very fast horse and he’s on the top of his game. There was a good field for this race and plenty of runners.

“Whatever we’re doing with the horse it’s working.”

Desert Lord has become a consistent horse having joined Ryan’s stable this year, and the trainer added: “In fairness he doesn’t hang any more - he had a bit of trouble with his joints and we’ve worked on them. Maybe he was just feeling them a little. He got a little tired at Chester [on his previous race] because he goes so quick and has so much speed that he just blew up at the end of the race.”

Ed McMahon said of Pivotal Flame: “The draw [15] beat us. They’ve gone on the stands’ rail and he’s had to go with them, and yet he doesn’t like to be in front too long. He’s had to commit him and he’s run a cracking race considering the draw.

“I’ll go for the Nunthorpe now and give him a crack at a Group 1. Dandy Man’s favourite and we were only just touched off by him at Newmarket, so he’s in the mix. We’ve given a Group 1 winner [La Cucaracha] weight today - all sprinters have their day and if everything goes right for him and he gets a bit of cut in the ground there’s a big race in him.”

ABN Amro Goodwood Cup (Group 1)
Third race quotes

YEATS SO DOMINANT IN ABN AMRO GOODWOOD CUP ROMP

Yeats, from Aidan O’Brien’s Ballydoyle Stables in Ireland, took another step towards becoming the king of the stayers for 2006 when setting a course record in the ABN Amro Goodwood Cup. His time of 3m 21.55s was .08 of a second inside that achieved by Jardine’s Lookout in 2002.

The five-year-old, who won the Ascot Gold Cup in June, beat Geordieland and Tungsten Strike by five lengths and three and a half lengths, after which O’Brien said: “You saw what he did at Ascot, but this is a different track and Mick [Kinane] hadn’t ridden him since he was two so you have to take those things into consideration.

“Mick was mighty impressed with him. He’s a Coronation Cup winner and a Derrinstown Stud [Derby Trial] winner at three so he’s not short of class. It’s a real excitement to get a horse like this and great to compete in these type of races. Mr and Mrs Magnier and Mr and Mrs Nagle decided to go this route and it’s a privilege to have a horse like him.

“We hope to go to the Irish St Leger next and take one race at a time. He’s entered for Melbourne. That’s a likelihood, but he might get an unrealistic weight and we’d love for this fellow to stay around for the next couple of years. Putting a ton on his back when we hope to keep him in training might not be fair.”

Kinane, who was number one jockey at Ballydoyle from 1999 to 2003 when he joined John Oxx, is now filling in on a number of the O’Brien’s runners in Britain while Kieren Fallon is banned from riding in the country. Kinane was asked about a Melbourne Cup challenge and said: “The ground would be the main concern. One year in five you get easy ground, and four out of five you’ll get firm ground. He’s a very classy individual and probably the best stayer I’ve ridden.”

Yeats is a 10-1 chance for the Melbourne Cup with William Hill and Paddy Power.

MORE ABN AMRO GOODWOOD CUP QUOTES

“BEST STAYER I HAVE RIDDEN”

Mick Kinane, the winning jockey Yeats, reported: "He most certainly does [have the credentials to be a Melbourne Cup contender] although the firm ground would be a worry. But he's definitely a very classy individual and probably I'd say the best stayer I've ridden.

“Weight is not a worry for him - he's a big, strapping horse and carried plenty of weight today and broke the track record, so it's not an inconvenience to him.

"I just wanted to get to the first corner, because we were right on the bend and there's a lot of runners, and I didn't want to get stuck behind a lot of rubbish.

“I asked him to go to the first corner, got a nice position and then they were going very quick, so I let him get into a nice rhythm and take his time for the best part of a mile.

"He was travelling lovely down the hill. I gave him a little flick and the race was over. He picked up and he had plenty in reserve."

THIRD RACE QUOTES
ABN AMRO GOODWOOD CUP (GROUP 2)

GEORDIE HEADS SOUTH

Geordieland, bought last month as a Melbourne Cup prospect by owner Martin Myers, ran a blinder on his first run for trainer Jamie Osborne when finding just Yeats too good in the ABN Amro Goodwood Cup.

“Takes Yeats out of this and he’s won it well. He’s run a blinder,” said Osborne. “That was a great performance by the winner and we were beaten by a better horse.

“He was bought as a Melbourne Cup prospect but he’s in the Ebor off a mark of 108, so you could argue he was well in and he gets in there with no penalty. We may well take that in on the way to the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup.

“He came to me the week after he last ran in France and all credit to Martin Myers for letting me buy him. We took the view that he was the best horse in Europe available at a working man’s price. He’s been very straightforward since he came to me and we were going into unknown territory over this trip today.”

Myers was full of praise for Osborne and added: “I think he’s a substantially better horse now than when we bought him so all credit to Jamie.”

Geordieland was quoted at 14/1 with Paddy Power for the totesport Ebor and a different York target could be on the cards for third-placed Tungsten Strike.

“I was over the moon with that run and he’s had quite a hard race,” said trainer Amanda Perrett. “He’s improved so much, as a three-year-old he was rated 68, and I think he could get even better with another year on his back.

“There aren’t many options for him now and I think he’ll probably go for the Lonsdale at York.”

FOURTH RACE WINNING QUOTES

ROAD BREAKS COURSE RECORD WHEN LEADING JOHNSTON 1-2

Road To Love - a winner at Ascot on Sunday - returned to action just four days later to set a course record time of 2m 02.81s when landing the Ù100,000 ladbrokes.com Handicap by five lengths with a pillar-to-post victory.

“The four-day break was never a concern as he only lost six kilos before Ascot but we were very worried about the draw,” said Mark Johnston, who also saddled runner-up Desert Realm.

“He has gone pretty fast but was given a breather and had plenty left at the end although I wasn’t that confident going into the home straight as there looked to be plenty queuing up to take him on. That shows that course records are not set on hard or very firm ground, we thought there was plenty of good in it today.

“We’ll have to see what the handicapper does now and whether that excludes him from future handicaps.

“We weren’t going to run him on Sunday, we were saving him for this Ù100,000 race today but when the race reopened we got greedy and put him back in it. John Egan had been booked to ride him at Ascot but then got off him to ride Chancellor, who subsequently didn’t run, but we had booked Richard (Hills) who was good on front-running horses at Ascot. They really clicked so we kept him on today.

“He’s physically a lovely horse and was in the yard that was worst affected when our horses were under the weather earlier this year.

“Desert Realm has run a tremendous race, he’s a very good horse who has just taken time to get going.”

Sir Michael Stoute said of third-placed Pearly King: “I was very pleased with him - it was a competitive handicap and he acquitted himself well. I think he’ll get a mile and a half, but at Ascot [where he finished seventh in the King George V Stakes over 12f] he was drawn badly and that was a bigger factor.”

DREAM THEME BRINGS UP DOUBLE FOR HILLS

Lambourn trainer Barry Hills brought off a near 33-1 double on day three
of Glorious Goodwood when Dream Theme’s victory in this valuable handicap complemented an earlier win for stablemate La Cucaracha.

Richard Hughes on the winner enjoyed a clear passage up the far rail as High Curragh wandered left, and Dream Theme was able to register his second win from five starts. He races in the colours of Prince Khalid Abdullah.

Hills said: “He’s had a few problems - a lot of my horses haven’t been right, but he’s come right today and hopefully he’ll improve on this. He’s got quite a bit of scope and size.

“I’d like to get him to a race in two or three weeks time and he likes quick ground. When he won his maiden at Kempton he was very impressive, but the ground was soft at Newmarket [on a subsequent outing] and he was on the wrong side and choked a bit.”

Kevin Ryan, trainer of second-placed High Curragh: “He’s run a great race - I just want to know how to get into that winner’s enclosure! The ground was probably just quick enough for him, I think they deserve a pat on the back for doing such a great job here with the ground but it has just dried out with the sun and breeze.”

CUMIN SPICES UP GREAT DAY FOR HILLS FAMILY

Barry Hills completed a near 151/1 treble on a great day for his family when Cumin ran out an impressive seven-length winner of the EBF New Ham Maiden Fillies’ Stakes under the trainer’s son Michael, who was himself landing a 19.25/1 double.

“She travelled very easily and I was determined to put her stamina into play today,” said the winning trainer. “She got squeezed out in the Chesham and otherwise would have been placed and then got beaten by a very good horse, Medicine Path, at York.

“She won well and I’m thinking about something like the May Hill or Fillies’ Mile at Ascot for her.”

Cumin - a $600,000 yearling purchase - received quotes of 33/1 with Stan James and 40/1 with William Hill for next year’s Stan James 1000 Guineas.

STAR MAKES A GOOD, IF
NOT PERFECT, START

Cumin was far too good for her rivals in this maiden fillies’ race, but 25-1 debutante Perfect Star ran a fine race to second in a field of 14.

Clive Cox, who trains the daughter of first-season sire Act One, said: “We’ve got about 20 two-year-olds in training and a really nice bunch of fillies. This one has made a positive step first time out. She’s bred to get a bit further so we’re pleased with this effort.”

Eoghan O’Neill said of third-placed Laureldean Express: “We beat the winner at York [last month] with Medicine Path, so I knew we were unlikely to beat her today with this filly, but we hoped to get into the first three. Our aim is simply to win a maiden with her.”

GHYLL FORGES HOME IN SPRINT FOR FINAL HONOURS

Punters looking for clues to Saturday’s Vodafone Stewards’ Cup over six furlongs had another chance to assess the draw after this sprint race closed the card on day three of Glorious Goodwood.

Confirming the view that horses need to be drawn high or low, and they should stay close to one of the rails, the first four made sure they were not marooned in the centre of the track. Holbeck Ghyll, drawn 12, but who raced along the stands’ side, came out on top, but Smokin Beau, drawn 14, took second, while Night Prospector (2) and Bluebok (19) filled third and fourth.

Holbeck Ghyll won impressively, prompting Ian Balding, the father of trainer Andrew, to imply that another quick run under a penalty might be wise if the horse is to stay ahead of the handicapper.

Balding snr said: “He’s back to last year’s form. We were just hoping he’s be back and he loves this fast ground. That’s the key I think.

“He’ll have to run with a penalty, I would have thought, but I’m not sure where. He certainly got a lead for a bit, then John [Egan] had a look across and thought, ‘they’re ahead of us’ and let him go on from a little way out. It was impressive in the end.”

GOING NEWS

The going remains

GOOD TO FIRM

Seamus Buckley, Goodwood’s Clerk of the Course, said: “We’ve had a dry night but put eight millimetres of water on the course, which has made a great difference in preventing the ground drying out.

“The Turftrax reading is 9.0, rather than 9.2 yesterday, and I’d predict the course will ride slightly slower than yesterday. I’d anticipate we will continue the watering programme through the meeting.

“We have also removed the false rail down the far side of the straight to produce a strip of fresh ground and the false rail on the lower bend will come down after racing tonight.”

Zaif is 9/1 from 16/1 with the latter but the change incorporates a Rule 4 of 15p in the pound following Stotsfold’s withdrawal.
