ICONIC LADBROKES ST LEGER IN PROSPECT

Sixties Icon, the evens favourite with the sponsors for the £475,000 Ladbrokes St Leger, continued his preparation for the world's oldest classic with a workout over six furlongs of the Al Bahathri gallop at Newmarket on Wednesday, August 30, 2006.

Partnered by work rider Mick Denaro, the three-year-old colt worked with a galloping companion and pleased trainer Jeremy Noseda. The son of Galileo is expected to complete his Ladbrokes St Leger preparation with a final serious piece of work on Saturday morning.

Jeremy Noseda said: "All roads lead to York for the Ladbrokes St Leger with Sixties Icon.

"I felt before he won the Gordon Stakes that he might just need the race, but that did not prove to be the case.

"Goodwood came 40 days after Royal Ascot and it is also about 40 days before the Ladbrokes St Leger. That is why we decided not to go for the Ladbrokes Great Voltigeur Stakes at York last week as could have had a hard race two and a half weeks before the Ladbrokes St Leger and he has already shown us he is not inconvenienced by a gap between his races.

"We did consider running him in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury, but that race has been downgraded to a Group Three and he has already won a Group Three."

Sixties Icon has improved throughout the season and Noseda believes that his run in the Vodafone Derby at Epsom, where he finished eighth, was a significant factor in the colt's progress.

The master of Shalfleet Stables continued: "He didn't run at two and we were disappointed with his first run at Newmarket this year. He ran below our expectations and seemed as though he was suffering from stage fright.

"He left that run well behind him when winning his maiden at Windsor.

"After Windsor, I wanted to go for King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot, as I felt he was still a bit green and colty, but Paul Roy [owner] wanted to go for the Derby.

"The Derby taught him a lot. He became much more professional and the race really educated him."

Jeremy Noseda has enjoyed numerous big race wins, with the likes of Proclamation, Wannabe Grand, Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Wilko and Araafa, a dual Group One winner this season. The omission of an English Classic from Noseda's CV is clearly something he wishes to rectify.

He continued: "The English Classics are the greatest in the world. They are worth five French Classics to me.

"I am an Englishman and England is the home of racing.

"The English Classics are the races with the greatest tradition in the world and the Ladbrokes St Leger has as big a tradition as any of them. To win a Classic as a trainer is really what it is all about.

"I remember going up on the train with my father to see Bustino (1974) win the St Leger. Although he was a short price, we backed a horse called Cove who won at a decent price in the race before and we re-invested on Bustino.

"The Ladbrokes St Leger was always in the last week of the holidays before going back to boarding school and I went many times with my father."

Looking ahead as to who will partner Sixties Icon in the Ladbrokes St Leger, Noseda revealed: "I would be happy if Frankie Dettori could take the ride, but his availability is dependent on Godolphin and also on Ouija Board in the Irish Champion Stakes.

"There should certainly be no shortage of jockeys wanting to ride Sixties Icon."

The £475,000 Ladbrokes St Leger takes place on Saturday, September 9, and will be run at York this year while its regular home, Doncaster, undergoes redevelopment. The two-day Ladbrokes St Leger Festival takes place on Friday and Saturday, September 8 and 9.

Sixties Icon
Sixties Icon boasts a superb pedigree, being by the 2001 Vodafone Derby winner Galileo and out of the 2000 Vodafone Oaks heroine, Love Divine. Bred in Newmarket by Trevor Harris' Lordship Stud, he was sold for 230,000 guineas to John Warren at Tattersalls in October, 2004, on behalf of Paul and Susan Roy. His debut came at Newmarket's Craven Meeting on April 18, 2006, when he showed promise to finish sixth in a 10-furlong maiden behind Markovitch. He duly confirmed that he was a horse for the future with success in a 10-furlong maiden at Windsor on May 8, when he was three quarters of a length too strong for Fleeting Memory. Sixties Icon then took a huge step up in class to contest the Vodafone Derby at Epsom on June 3 and ran a superb race, staying on stoutly to finish seventh, beaten just over five lengths, behind Sir Percy. Another solid effort followed at Royal Ascot with third in the King Edward VII Stakes, beaten under three lengths by Papal Bull. On his latest appearance, Sixties Icon duly advertised his credentials for the Ladbrokes St Leger by winning the BGC (Gordon Stakes) in impressive fashion at Glorious Goodwood on August 1.

Susan Roy
Susan Roy is the wife of investment banker Paul Roy, founder of NewSmith Capital Partners, which he set up having previously worked for Merrill Lynch, where he was Co President of the Global Markets and Investment Banking division. Paul and Susan Roy, who are based at Ascot, owned their first horses in 1997, with their string in England split between Jeremy Noseda and Brian Meehan. The best horses owned to date by the Roys have been Wilko, successful in the 2004 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, and Sarava, the shock 70/1 winner of the 2002 Belmont Stakes. Sarava, who was initially handled by Brian Meehan, was with Kenny McPeek at the time of his Belmont Stakes victory, while the Roys have also had horses in the USA with Bob Baffert. Other useful horses owned by the Roys have included Twilight Blues and Majors Cast.

Jeremy Noseda
Born on September 17, 1963, Jeremy Noseda is based in Newmarket, where he has held a licence since 1998. Noseda, who grew up in London, was not born into a racing background, but loved the sport enough to learn to ride, and he spent summers working for trainers Brian Swift and Jeremy Tree. He was assistant to Arundel-based handler John Dunlop (for six years), John Gosden (five years), and Sheikh Mohammed's global training operation, Godolphin (two years). Following the successes of Lammtarra in 1995, he was offered a training position in France by Sheikh Mohammed, but Noseda decided to become a public handler in California. Returning from the United States at the end of 1997, Noseda began training in this country with an initial string of about 50 horses, winning 18 races in 1998, his first full season at Shalfleet Stables in Newmarket. These successes included Noseda's first Pattern win in Britain in the Group Two Cherry Hinton Stakes at Newmarket, followed by a Group One victory in the Cheveley Park Stakes at the same course, both achieved by Wannabe Grand, who Noseda called his "iron filly". Wannabe Grand finished second in the 1999 1000 Guineas and Noseda's Kalypso Katie came close to Classic success when second to Love Divine in the 2000 Vodafone Oaks. His first Classic success came at the Curragh this year when Araafa took the Irish 2,000 Guineas. Araafa subsequently won the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot while Sander Camillo also won at Royal Ascot and is ante-post favourite for next year's Stan James 1000 Guineas. Other good horses trained by Noseda include Balmont, Cassis, Peak To Creak, Just James and Carry On Katie while last season his best horse was Sussex Stakes victor Proclamation. In 2004, Noseda made a successful visit to the USA when Wilko landed the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

STRONGHOLD HEADS 151 IN totesport CAMBRIDGESHIRE

A total of 151 horses have been entered for the £150,0000 totesport Cambridgeshire (Heritage Handicap), run over nine furlongs at Newmarket on Saturday, September 30, with the weights headed by John Gosden's Royal Hunt Cup runner-up Stronghold on 10st 1lb. This year's contest has seen a prize money increase of £20,000 on the 2005 figure, while the second leg of the Autumn Double, the totesport Cesarewitch, has also received the same boost in prize money.

Kandidate, twice a Listed winner this season for Clive Brittain, has been allotted 9st 13lb, with Godolphin's Belenus, successful in Group Three company at Salisbury on August 17, on 9st 10lb.

The Michael Jarvis-trained Notability (9st 7lb) landed a Group Two event at Baden Baden on August 29, defeating fellow entry Azarole (9st 5lb) by a length and a half, while Snoqualmie Boy (9st 6lb), trained by David Elsworth, took the Listed Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 22.

Sir Mark Prescott's Spectait (9st 5lb) produced a gutsy display when landing the totesport Mile at Goodwood on August 4, defeating Dunelight (9st) by half a length, with Sir Gerard (8st 13lb and 10/1 joint-favourite), trained by James Fanshawe, running a blinder in fourth from a poor draw.

Fanshawe is also responsible for Cesare (9st 2lb), who edged out Stronghold in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot on June 21, and scored again at Warwick on August 28.

Smart Enough (9st and 10/1 joint-favourite) has looked a rapidly improving sort for Mikael Magnusson, winning his last two races in impressive style, while Dansili Dancer (8st 13lb) claimed a valuable prize at Haydock on August 12, beating Fairmile (8st 13lb) by a length and a half for trainer Clive Cox, who also trains Dunelight.

The Roger Charlton-trained Another Bottle (8st 11lb) ran with promise on his last start when ninth in the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket on July 14 having disappointed previously in the Royal Hunt Cup, a race in which Luca Cumani's pair Pride Of Nation (8st 11lb) and Minority Report (8st 10lb) also failed to get competitive.

Dark Islander (8st 9lb) was a decisive winner of a mile handicap at Newmarket on July 14 for John Hills, getting the better of Dunelight and subsequent scorer Charlie Cool (8st 8lb), while Champions Gallery (8st 4lb) won well at Beverley on August 27, followed home by Pearly King (8st 7lb), Noble Gent (8st 6lb) and Formal Decree (8st 6lb).

Other interesting contenders include Illustrious Blue (8st 5lb), three times a winner this year for first-season trainer William Knight, 2004 hero Spanish Don (8st 2lb) and runner-up Take A Bow (9st), last year's third My Paris (8st 12lb) and Minkowski (8st 8lb), owned by Michael Tabor and trained in France by John Hammond.

GOLDEN QUEST TOPS totesport CESAREWITCH WEIGHTS

Golden Quest is set to carry top-weight of 9st 10lb as he heads a 78-strong entry for the £150,000 totesport Cesarewitch, run over two and a quarter miles at Newmarket, on Saturday, October 14, 2006.

Mark Johnston won the prestigious heritage handicap in 1998 with Spirit Of Love and again in 2004 with Contact Dancer, who is set to carry 8st 7lb this year. Golden Quest, second to Distinction in the 2005 Group Two Goodwood Cup, is one of a six-strong entry for the Kingsley House trainer, which also includes Winged d'Argent (9st 6lb), McEldowney (8st 5lb), Quizzene (7st 13lb) and Doctor Scott (7st 6lb).

Sir Mark Prescott has five engaged, including Elusive Dream (9st 7lb), who was fifth to Sergeant Cecil in 2005, the prolific winner, Key Time (8st 6lb and 12/1 joint-favourite), Liberate (7st 6lb) and Warsaw Pact (7st 6lb).

The Mick Channon-trained Baddam made history when completing the Ascot Stakes/Queen Alexandra Stakes double at the Royal meeting in June and could bid to add another major staying prize under 9st 7lb, while stablemate Desert Move has 8st 13lb.

Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor has five engaged in a bid to land his first totesport Cesarewitch, including Northern Splendour (9st 6lb), Sunday Symphony (9st 2lb), Red Admiral (8st 10lb), Scriptwriter (8st 9lb) and Zabeel Palace (8st 5lb).

Zeroberto (7st 7lb and 12/1 joint-favourite) landed a gamble over hurdles at Galway in July and Dermot Weld could send the six-year-old across the Irish Sea. He may be joined by the Tony Martin-trained Leg Spinner (8st 9lb), who was last seen defeating Golden Quest by a head in the Ascot Stakes at York in June 2005.

Amanda Perrett's three-strong entry consists of Bulwark (9st 7lb), fourth to Sergeant Cecil in the Group Two Lonsdale Cup at York last time, Orange Touch (9st 4lb) and Sir Monty (7st 11lb).

Vinando finished third in the race last season and Charles Egerton's charge has 9st 4lb, while 2001 victor and Cesarewitch regular Distant Prospect is allotted 7st 11lb as he attempts to give the Andrew/Ian Balding stable its third victory in the race, having also saddled Top Cees to success in 1999. Callaghan's progressive Finalmente has 9st 5lb.

River Alhaarth was a good fifth in the totesport Ebor at York and has 8st 9lb, while those behind him that day include Lets Roll (8st 7lb), Odiham (8st 12lb) and Shergar Cup Stayers' winner, Dorothy's Friend (9st).

Philip Hobbs could run Triumph Hurdle hero Detroit City (8st 12lb) along with Noble Request (8st 13lb), while Len Lungo has a trio headed by 2004 Northumberland Plate winner Mirjan (8st 8lb).

Swift Sailor (9st 4lb) heads Gary Moore's trio that also includes Cold Turkey (8st 13lb) and Honduras (8st 12lb), while David Elsworth relies on Saint Alebe (8st 10lb), last seen winning the 2003 totesport Ebor, and John Gosden could run Group Three Queen's Vase third, Ermine Sea (8st 1lb).

The Eric Libaud-trained Sentry Duty (8st 10lb) and John Hammond's Hitaaf (7st 13lb) may represent France.

Michael Prosser, Clerk of the Course at Newmarket, commented: "Newmarket's two eagerly awaited autumn Saturdays, totesport Cambridgeshire Day on September 30 and Champions' Day on October 14, will once again be greatly enriched by each staging a leg of the historic 'autumn double.' These two great handicaps never fail to deliver high class, ultra-competitive fields on the day and, judging by these tremendous entries, the 2006 renewals look sure to follow that trend."

totesport GO FIVE PLACES ON THE AUTUMN DOUBLE

For the second year running, the sponsors are betting to FIVE places on the Autumn Double - totesport Cambridgeshire and totesport Cesarewitch.

Spokesman Damian Walker said: "The enhanced each-way terms on the Autumn Double were a hit with punters so we have decided to repeat the trick this year.

"It was great news for us to see 66-1 shot Ace Of Hearts finish fifth in last year's totesport Cambridgeshire, but the good news ended there as we lost a quarter of a million pounds on the gambled-on winner, Blue Monday.

"Punters love having a bet on the Autumn Double and with a minimum return of 143-1 on the double, plus enhanced each-way terms, we expect to see plenty of business again."
