GOING: SOFT

2.50pm, £28,000 Countrywide Steel And Tubes Hopeful Stakes, Listed, 6f

1) (4) 611000 ONE PUTRA Michael Jarvis 4-9-04 Philip Robinson
Penalised for a six-furlong Listed race win on good to firm ground at Windsor in June. Unplaced in competitive sprints last three starts (two top handicaps and a Group Three), including when just over three lengths behind Borderlescott in the Vodafone Stewards' Cup at Goodwood. Has won on good to soft but his ground preferences are not totally clear. BP= 6/1

2) (6) 120430 ASSERTIVE Richard Hannon 3-9-01 Jimmy Fortune
Dual six-furlong Listed race winner who acquitted himself well over seven furlongs in Pattern company on his last three starts, though beaten by One Putra once. Pick of those efforts came when third to Iffraaj in a Goodwood Group Two. Should appreciate any give in the ground but has yet to run on anything worse than good. BP= 8/1

3) (3) 520-302 ANDRONIKOS Paul Cole 4-9-00 Frankie Dettori
Consistent soft ground lover, having won three Listed contests over six furlongs under those conditions. Showed himself to be in good heart when runner-up to Celtic Mill in a Windsor conditions event over this distance on August 5, but previously beaten by One Putra. Has claims. BP= 5/2

4) (1) 3202043 APPALACHIAN TRAIL Ian Semple 5-9-00 Tom Eaves
Admirable sort from an in-form yard who has been knocking on the door in major seven-furlong/mile handicaps this term. First attempt at six furlongs is a concern, but his trainer did consider aiming him at the Ayr Gold Cup over the distance last term and he must be considered. Yet to tackle soft ground. BP= 7/1

5) (2) 002-505 MASTA PLASTA Howard Johnson 3-8-11 Oscar Urbina
Landed the Group Three Norfolk Stakes over five furlongs last term but has failed to reproduce that form in six subsequent starts. Not disgraced when fifth in six-furlong Listed race at Chester last time but requires improvement to take this. BP= 14/1

6) (7) 121243 TAWAASSOL Sir Michael Stoute 3-8-11 Martin Dwyer
Progressive three-year-old who has run creditably at Group Three level on his two most recent starts. Beaten under two lengths when fourth to Pivotal Point over five furlongs at Sandown before finishing a close third to Fayr Jag over a furlong further at Newbury on July 22. More expected but untested on this ground. BP= 9/4

7) (5) 2101456 SUNDERLAND ECHO Brian Ellison 3-8-06 Tony Hamilton
Best form has come over six furlongs with plenty of give in the ground and appreciated heavy going in May when third in a weak Haydock Listed contest over the distance off a rating of 65. Further rain would help her cause, but has a bit to find on the book. BP= 40/1

SUMMARY

A tricky little race so bets should be kept to a minimum. In the circumstances, 40/1 about Sunderland Echo is a big price since he is best on very soft ground even though he has to find plenty of improvement.
