SWINBURN RUNNER TEMPTS SHREWDIES IN LADBROKES’ £100,000 HANDICAP
A high-class, 18-runner handicap held at one of Britain’s premier racing festivals is just the sort of contest to tee up a battle between punters and bookmakers.
With bookies paying out on the first four places punters have added incentive to make an investment in tomorrow’s £100,000 ladbrokes.com Handicap, the featured heritage handicap held on day three of Glorious Goodwood.
Ladbrokes’ representative David Williams said: “It’s an extremely competitive race with 5-1 co-favourites of three - Pearly King, Road To Love and Stotsfold. From our point of view the most interesting is Stotsfold, who has sneaked in at the bottom of the handicap and is going for a hat-trick. He’s the one shrewd punters have been eyeing up since we opened betting on the race.
“We’re delighted by the size of the field - we know we have to pay out on the first four, but when we sponsor a race we would much rather face heavier liabilities but be associated with a success.”
Stotsfold, who is trained by Walter Swinburn and will be ridden by Jimmy Quinn, has won handicaps at Lingfield and Chester recently. Road To Love, from Mark Johnston’s stable, has to defy a 5lb penalty for winning at Ascot on Saturday - tomorrow’s contest will be his fourth in a month, but he is holding his form well - while Pearly King bids to regain the winning thread for trainer Sir Michael Stoute having suffered a defeat at Royal Ascot. Before that he had notched victories at Yarmouth, Redcar and Newbury.
Putting the co-favourites to one side, Ladbrokes then bet: 8-1 Familiar Territory, 10-1 Kyoto Summit, 12-1 High Command, Salt Man, 14-1 bar.
First run in 1962, the ladbrokes.com Handicap has been supported by the bookmaker since 2004, and while it attracted just 11 runners last year, the winner proved to be Enforcer, who has since performed admirably in such Group 1 races as the Vodafone Coronation Cup and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes.
NAYYIR HEADS WEIGHTS AND SIR GERARD
BIDS TO FOIL STATS IN TOTESPORT MILE
Nayyir could make a quick return to Glorious Goodwood on Friday when he is set to carry topweight in a maximum field of 20 for the £150,000 totesport Mile Handicap.
Gerard Butler’s horse invariably runs well at the Sussex track and finished fourth, beaten less than half a length by runner-up Jedburgh, in the Betfair Cup on day one of the meeting.
The sponsors make Nayyir a 12-1 chance for their race, first run in 1987 and a black hole for all but one favourite in 19 runnings. Ancient World, who represented trainer Saeed Bin Suroor, was successful in 2004 when 9-2 market leader, and the poisoned chalice currently lies with James Fanshawe, trainer of ante-post favourite Sir Gerard.
Totesport representative Damian Walker, said: “Sir Gerard is our only ante-post loser at the moment, but those punters who backed him have been dealt a blow by the draw. Sir Gerard has been given the widest draw in stall one.
“With that in mind I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Spectait, drawn 16, or Dunelight, from stall 15, emerged as favourite on the day. A proven classy performer like Nayyir only adds interest to the race.”
Sir Gerard won the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot on his latest start, while the Sir Mark Prescott-trained Spectait finished fifth in a Group 3 contest at Lingfield - that form could receive a boost if the winner that day, Echo Of Light, performs well in today’s Cantor Spreadfair Sussex Stakes.
Dunelight, from Clive Cox’s stable, scored at Ascot on Friday and has been given a 3lb penalty. He was beaten just over eight lengths by Sir Gerard in the Britannia Handicap, but is now 7lb better off.
Totesport prices as of today, Wednesday, August 2, are: 5 Sir Gerard, 6 Dunelight, Spectait, 9 Eden Rock, 12 Nayyir, 14 Rohaani, 16 Langford, Wise Dennis, Paper Talk, 20 Capable Guest, Red Spell, Wavertree Warrior, Spirit Of France, 25 Kelucia, Prince Of Thebes, El Coto, Shot To Fame, 33 Kings Quay, My Paris, Hills Of Aran.

KEY SCORES AGAIN
The Sir Mark Prescott-trained Key Time bagged his fifth success of the season when holding off the fast-finishing Theatre to take the opening Invesco Perpetual Goodwood Stakes.
“He was always going well and we had the nice pace that I’d hoped for,” said winning rider Seb Sanders. “He stays very well but our real worry was that he’d had to work very hard last time and it might have taken a bit out of him.
“He’s a real tough horse and I think that was a great performance today, he stayed on really well. It’s his fifth win this year and we’re slightly scratching our heads as to why he got beaten at Warwick earlier in the year, he probably ran into a good one. I’ve no idea where he’ll go now, I’ll leave that to Sir Mark to decide.”
Owner Graham Moore, who owns the winner in partnership with the Osborne House syndicate, added: “He won his maiden here last year but injured himself during the race. We were going to send him to the sales but couldn’t because of the injury and thank God we didn’t.
“We knew he’d stay and as he long as got over his last run he’d be OK today.”

THEATRE RUNS WELL AGAIN IN GOODWOOD STAMINA TEST
A late flourish from Theatre and jockey John Egan enabled the gelding to get to within a neck of winner Key Time in the opening race on day two of Glorious Goodwood.
Theatre’s trainer, Jamie Poulton, who is based not far from Goodwood at Lewes, said: “He runs well in this race. That’s been three times he’s been placed in it without winning, and that was another heart-stopping moment.
“Still he’s young enough to come back and have another go next year. He’s run as well today as he has for some time on the Flat, but Sir Mark Prescott, the handicap king, has done us again with a young well-handicapped horse.
“It’s Theatre’s style to come late and I’ve no complaints with John’s ride. You don’t complain with God’s decision.
“Theatre’s a three-mile hurdler and I’m hoping he’ll be at his best over hurdles this winter, but there are some two-mile races here before then and I hope to bring him back. His owner, Chris Steward, runs a night club in Brighton, adores his horse and loves coming here.”

PRINCE TOASTS MARMALADE IN VINTAGE RENEWAL
Strategic Prince defied a 3lb penalty and held off highly-touted Duke Of Marmalade in this juvenile highlight of Glorious Goodwood.
Following up a victory in the July Stakes at Newmarket, and on his fourth race of the season, Strategic Prince proved another big winner for trainer Paul Cole.
Cole said: “He’s a very mature horse, there’s nothing backward about him and there’s never been anything to say he’s needed more time. I’ve always taken the view that if they’re coming along nicely don’t stop them.
“We’d have to look on the bright side - things were against him today and he overcame them, and the second horse is obviously very good. We were drawn wide and had to get involved a bit early, but there are ifs and buts about every race. He’s got there, that’s the main thing.
“He’s shown signs of greenness in races and they’re only babies - when they run towards the crowd and there’s cheering and so on they can lose their concentration a bit. There’s only a couple of races to think about now, but one would like to win the Dewhurst Stakes because he’s got a lot of speed. He’s odds-on to get a mile and beyond next year.”
Strategic Prince, a son of Dansili, races in the familiar yellow, white and black colours of HRH Sultan Ahmad Shah (who was wearing a tartan cloth cap in the winner’s enclosure today), and was bought for 150,000 guineas at Tattersalls. He was the second horse purchased by bloodstock agent Angie Sykes - the first was Vodafone Derby winner Sir Percy.
Following the race, bookmakers shortened Strategic Prince for next year’s Stan James 2000 Guineas - the sponsors make Cole’s colt a 20-1 shot from 33-1, but keep Duke Of Marmalade unchanged at 20-1. Paddy Power offers just 16-1 about today’s winner, Totesport and William Hill make him a 20-1 shot, while Blue Square price him at 25-1.

VERY GOOD PRINCE
Eddie Ahern, winning rider on Strategic Prince, commented: "He was very good. The pace in the race was a little bit slow and wasn't really ideal. I committed earlier than I wanted and when he was in front he was idling, but just when I came to the line the other horse came to me and he went again, but the race was over really.
"Over six furlongs the last time he was very impressive. He showed a real good turn of foot and picked up like a good horse, and the extra furlong today suited. We were drawn one, so I wanted to get out the stalls and get a prominent position, but when he is in front he is idling a bit.
"When Mick (Kinane) came to me I could feel my horse pulling out a little bit more, so he has probably won with a little bit in hand. He's a big baby and things are coming easily to him so there has got to be improvement as well."
SECOND RACE PLACED QUOTES
VEUVE CLICQUOT VINTAGE STAKES (GROUP 2)
MARMALADE FINDS ONE TOO GOOD
The well-backed Duke Of Marmalade was sent off 11/4 favourite for the Group 2 Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes but failed by a neck to reach the winner Strategic Prince although trainer Aidan O’Brien was far from disheartened by the run.
“I’m very happy with that and he was still a bit green. Our horses have been taking a bit of time to learn this year,” said O’Brien. “I don’t know where he’ll go now - we’ll take him home and then look at things.”
O’Brien also confirmed that Stan James 2000 Guineas hero George Washington could come to Goodwood for the totesport Celebration Mile next month.
“George Washington will either come here for the Celebration or the Desmond Stakes at Leopardstown. I’d say Goodwood is probably favourite, it’s a week later and he may need that extra time,” added the Ballydoyle handler.
THIRD RACE WINNING QUOTES
CANTOR SPREADFAIR SUSSEX STAKES (GROUP 1)
MASTERPIECE HOLDS COURT
Six-year-old Court Masterpiece, an unlucky second in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot last time, made amends in some style when beating a high-class field to take the Group 1 Cantor Spreadfair Sussex Stakes by two lengths from Soviet Song.
“He was very unlucky at Ascot when nearly knocked over but that’s history and he’s now one of the best milers in Europe,” said winning trainer Ed Dunlop.
“He’s very good round here and won like a really good horse today. The key with him is that he can quicken so well and he did that off a decent pace today, then the gap came nicely and he kept on well.
“He goes on any ground and hopefully this win will find him a`place as a stallion, he’s a horse that’s very dear to hearts.
“He ran very well in Hong Kong last year, finished third in the Lockinge and second in the Queen Anne so I’m very pleased for him to have won this.
“He could stay at a mile but I still think he could be a Group 1 horse on soft ground at six furlongs, last year’s winner of this went for the Haydock Sprint. I’d like to take him to America as a companion for Ouija Board but we’ll so what Sheikh Mohammed wants to do.”
Jimmy Fortune, who partnered the winner, added: “He’s normally a hold-up horse and travels so well. Today everything went his way and he won like a good horse. They’ve gone a real good gallop and it felt to me like a good Group 1. He might well have won at Ascot last time if he had not been badly hampered.”
This was Court Masterpiece’s fourth victory at Goodwood.

FAST PACE SUITED COURT MASTERPIECE
Jimmy Fortune, the winning jockey on Court Masterpiece, said: “They went very quick and that played into my hands.
“I initially wanted to be handy and sit behind Frankie (Dettori on Echo Of Light) and Alan Munro on Araafa) and hopefully come and do them.
“He's seen the mile out very well and has quickened up like a top class horse. He wasn't stopping and galloped right to the line."

SOVIET BACK ON SONG AFTER NEWMARKET FLOP
Soviet Song could not match Court Masterpiece in Glorious Goodwood’s highlight event, the Cantor Spreadfair Sussex Stakes, but by finishing runner-up for the second year she returned to something like her best form.
She ran poorly at Newmarket in the Falmouth Stakes behind Rajeem, but trainer James Fanshawe said: “Johnny [Murtagh] said the ground was lovely today, but she may just have got a bit jarred up at Royal Ascot [where she won the Windsor Forest Stakes]. None of my horses that ran at Ascot ran well at Newmarket.
“She’s coming back to something like her best, and I’d like to have another go at something like the Matron Stakes [which Soviet Song won in 2004]. We’ve entered her in the Sun Chariot Stakes this morning, but the main thing is she’s enjoying her racing again.
“It’s going to cost an awful lot of money to get her into the Breeders’ Cup, so you’ll have to talk to her owners [Elite Racing] about that, but in the past she hasn’t lasted [a full season]. This year I think she’ll go on - it’s taken a while for her to come and she’s run well today. Don’t forget this was her final race last season, but her feet are in good nick and she’s come to herself now.”
Sir Michael Stoute, trainer of third-placed Rob Roy, said: “That’s the first time he’s run well in a Group 1 race. It’s a little too early to make plans, but he’s in the totesport Celebration Mile here and that’s a possibility.”
Owner Philip Newton said of Rob Roy: “I’m delighted. That’s the first time we’ve got him settled and please God he’s not injured. He’s run in three Group 1s and always come back with an injury, but hopefully not this time.
“It’s been bad luck to get stress fractures and shoulder injuries, but he’s a serious piece of kit. We came here today to settle him and that’s worked too, so we’re really pleased.”

COLE AND AHERN TAKE STRATEGIC ROUTE TO SECOND-DAY DOUBLE
Paul Cole and Eddie Ahern recorded a 48-1 double on day two of Glorious Goodwood when Strategic Mount’s victory in this race complemented an earlier victory for stablemate Strategic Prince.
Owned by Sir Martyn Arbib and his son Ben, Strategic Mount was always prominent and found plenty when coming under pressure in the closing stages. Ahern said: “It’s great to be out in front because it can be tricky around here sometimes. We went a good gallop and he quickened up nicely. I thought they might get to me, but then he went away again.”
Cole said: “His target has been the Melrose [Handicap, run at York later this month], but Sir Martyn was coming down here and it fitted in with his plans. The Melrose remains his target if he can get into the handicap.
“He’s had three easy wins so we’re hoping he’ll get in. He’ll probably go up a lot. He’s an improving horse and next year we hope he’ll get two miles and become a very good stayer.
“This horse loves ground the firmer the better - he can’t go on the soft. He’s an exciting prospect if he remains on course. He’s a big, weak horse still.”
Bandama was cut to 14/1 from 20/1 with Blue Square and 16/1 from 25/1 with totesport for the totesport Ebor at York later this month after finishing second to Strategic Mount in the cantorspreadfair.com Handicap.
But the Green Desert colt is not a definite starter in the big York handicap, according to trainer Amanda Perrett.
“We’ll see what the owner wants to do. He’s going to be a nice horse for next year but he could well go to York for either the Ebor or Melrose,” said Perrett. “He’s ran a cracker here again, especially considering he was giving 8lb to the winner.”
FIFTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
WEATHERBYS BANK FILLIES’ STAKES
MOORE GETS NICE TUNE OUT OF BRITTAIN FILLY
The season’s leading rider Ryan Moore broke his duck for the 2006 Glorious Goodwood meeting when steering top weight Nice Tune to a length victory in the Weatherbys Bank Fillies’ Stakes.
“She’s improved all year and her form is rock solid, she finished fourth to Fairmile at Kempton two starts ago,” said Moore.
“She did it well carrying 10 stone and has kept on getting better. It’s nice to get off the mark for the meeting.”
Moore had earlier finished third aboard Rob Roy in the Cantor Spreadfair Sussex Stakes and added: “Rob Roy ran a really good race. He switched off well and could just have done with getting a gap sooner. He should win a big race this year.”
It was Moore’s 11th winner at Goodwood this year and he is the most successful jockey at the course this season.

COCOA ALL CHAMPAGNE FOR FIRST-TIME OWNER
A late rattle from topweight Nice Tune enabled her win this fillies’ handicap, but Princess Cocoa and Lily Elsie ran well to take the minor places.
Princess Cocoa’s trainer, Richard Fahey, was absent, but owner Peter Ashton, who runs a logistics business in York, said: “She’s gone up two rungs in class today and we’re very happy with that performance. Her last five runs have ended in two wins and three seconds, so we can’t complain about that.
“Richard bought her at the sales and we had a look at her at the stable and liked what we saw. She’s the first horse I’ve ever owned and she’s the only one I’ve got in training. I don’t think I could cope with any more because of the stress of watching, but this filly is proving to be beyond our wildest dreams. She’s absolutely fantastic.”

SACRE BLEU! SACRE COEUR BRINGS UP 293-1 TREBLE FOR IN-FORM AHERN
Eddie Ahern joined Frankie Dettori at the head of the Glorious Goodwood Racing UK Leading Rider Award, when landing his third victory of the afternoon and completing a 293-1 treble.
His latest victory was achieved on Sacre Coeur, trained by John Dunlop, who said: “She did that very well considering it was just her second run and it’s a first winner for the owner [William Armitage].
“She broke well, being drawn wide can sometimes be a disadvantage, but she was up there all the way.”
Jeremy Noseda, who saddled runner-up Rahiya, said: “We’re happy with that, but she didn’t get any luck in running. We’ll just try to win a maiden from here.”
Eoghan O’Neill trains a number of horses for US-based Jerry Jamgotchian, including Queen Noverre, who finished third. O’Neill said: “She’s run well again, but just got run off her feet a little bit. She needs an extra furlong.”

MINORITY REPORT SURVIVES ENQUIRY TO TAKE CLOSING RACE
Minority Report, trained by Luca Cumani and ridden by Nicky Mackay, took the closing race on day two of Glorious Goodwood after surviving the scrutiny of a stewards’ enquiry.
The winner hung right towards runner-up Kalankari in the closing stages of the race, but the manoeuvre was deemed not to have affected the result. However, Mackay, who had just notched his first Glorious Goodwood winner, was given a two-day suspension for careless riding.
Minority Report won the Thirsk Hunt Cup on his seasonal debut, then flopped in the Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot. Trainer’s wife Sara Cumani said: “He seems to cope well with seven furlongs or a mile. He didn’t run well in the Royal Hunt Cup, but maybe it was the straight track - things just didn’t go for him.
“I think the plan is now to go to Ascot on Shergar Cup day for a race around the bend. He must have fast ground.”
GROUND UPDATE
The home straight will be watered this evening after day two of Glorious Goodwood.
Seamus Buckley, Goodwood’s Clerk of the Course, said: “We’re very pleased with the way the course rode today despite the drying conditions. We’ll be watering the straight tonight, putting on seven millimetres of water. This will freshen up the ground and keep any sting out of it.
“We will also be taking down the temporary running rail on the far side - from the finishing post up to three and a half furlongs out - providing a fresh strip of ground five to six metres wide.”
GOING CHANGE
The official going was changed this morning to
GOOD TO FIRM
Goodwood’s Clerk of the Course, Seamus Buckley, said: “After a dry 24 hours we’ve changed the going to Good to Firm and we have a Turftrax reading of 9.2.
“We watered the round course last night from the mile marker to the intersection of the straight course just to keep moisture in the ground. We’re forecast a dry day today and will water the whole of the straight course this evening.”
PUNTERS ASKING FOR ONE HORSE IN EARLY EXCHANGES
The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Ask, tipped by the Racing Post’s Pricewise column, is the morning’s big market mover. The Sadler’s Wells colt - who lines up in the cantorspreadfair.com Handicap (3.50pm) - has tumbled from 5/1 to 9/4 with William Hill, 11/4 from 9/2 with Ladbrokes, 11/4 from 4/1 with Stan James, 5/2 from 9/2 with totesport and 5/2 from 3/1 with Paddy Power and VC Bet. Paddy Power have also cut Ask from 25/1 to 16/1 for the Ladbrokes St Leger. VC Bet have also shortened Bandama from 14/1 to 12/1 In the cantorspreadfair.com Handicap.
Echo Of Light has been put up by a tipping service for the Cantor Spreadfair Sussex Stakes (3.15pm) and shortened from 11/2 to 9/2 with Stan James, totesport, Paddy Power and VC Bet. William Hill go 4/1 from 5/1 about the Godolphin horse. Pricewise’s selection Aussie Rules is 12/1 from 16/1 with VC Bet and Stan James, who have eased market leader Araafa from 10/11 to Evens.
Key Time has shortened from 5/1 to 4/1 in the opening Invesco Perpetual Goodwood Stakes (2.05pm) with Stan James. In the same race Ski Jump is 16/1 from 20/1 with VC Bet, who have also clipped Theatre into 16/1 from 25/1.
Duke Of Marmalade is 11/4 from 100/30 with Stan James for the Veuve Clicquot Richmond Stakes (2.40pm) and 5/2 from 3/1 with Paddy Power while Kalgoorlie is 8/1 from 10/1 with VC Bet and 7/1 from 9/1 with both totesport and Powers.
