ASCOT, THURSDAY, AUGUST 10

DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP DRAW - ASCOT

Michael Roberts, the Rest of the World team manager for Saturday’s Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup at Ascot (August 12), is eagerly looking forward to the world’s premier jockeys’ contest and his match against the opposing team captain, Jason Weaver, in the Ladbrokes Shergar Cup Duel beforehand.

He said at the draw today (Thursday, August 10): “I am really pleased with the horses we have got - in the second race we managed to get the two horses we wanted most.

“The last time the Shergar Cup was run, we thought it might be interesting in future to have a match between the two team managers.

“It will be nice to get out on the new Ascot - I am looking forward to it. Ascot now looks to be one of the best, if not the best, track in the world.

“I ride regularly and have been making sure that I get on two each morning since the Ladbrokes Shergar Cup Duel was confirmed.

"I should weigh in at around 9st on Saturday.”

Roberts has just finished his first season (finished July 31) training in South Africa, gaining 30 winners. “It exceeded my expectations. I deliberately went for young horses that I liked and had only one older horse. I will have 80 in training for next season.”

Jason Weaver commented: “I was out playing golf when I got the call from Ascot that they were going ahead with the match race.

“I nearly swallowed my putter and fell over on the green. At that time, I had not ridden for three and a half years.

“I committed myself to it and aimed to lose weight - I was well over 12st 7lb and have got down to 10st 10lb which I have to be very happy with.

“I've been riding out a couple of horses every morning for the past month and trying to conserve as much energy as possible for Saturday.

"I weighed in stripped at 10st 9lb in the Dettori household this morning after a spin on the treadmill.

"I'm over 2st heavier than when I was riding and I haven't found it that difficult to get some weight off.

“As Michael was saying, it is an honour to ride at the new Ascot. There are five points up for grabs too so our duel will set up the day.

“My sons never saw me ride as a jockey and haven’t seen me ride out in the mornings so I have said I will bring them to Ascot on Saturday.”

Roberts added: “Jason is fitter than I thought he would be - he has done well and may the best man win on Saturday.“

Weaver has lost a stone in weight during the last few weeks, getting down to 10st 10lb from 11st 10lb, ahead of his return to the saddle for the Ladbrokes Shergar Cup Duel.

Ladbrokes, official bookmaker to the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, have generously donated £50 to the Injured Jockeys' Fund for each pound Weaver has lost in that period, meaning a total payment of £700.

There is a 16lb difference in the ratings between the Pic Up Sticks (Weaver's mount) and Who's Winning (Roberts' mount) in the Ladbrokes Shergar Cup Duel.

DETTORI HAILS A GREAT TEAM

Frankie Dettori, jockey captain for the Rest of the World Team, commented: “We have a great team of the best jockeys from around the world.

“The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is always a great day both for our sport and the fans.”

JOCKEYS TALK ABOUT THE DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP

Emma-Jayne Wilson, the riding sensation of Canada who has had 78 winners at the current Woodbine meet, said: "I'm very excited..

"When I had the first call about riding at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup back in March it seemed a long way away.

"The style of racing is different from at home and the track at Ascot is also different, but it is still horses racing with four legs with a jockey on their backs!"

Hayley Turner, who along with Emma-Jayne Wilson will become the first female jockey to participate in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, commented: "I can't wait.

"It is going to be a great experience for me and I look to have a good couple of rides in the last two races."

Doug Whyte, the Hong Kong-based South African jockey, added: "It's great to be back and see the real big facelift at Ascot.

"It will be interesting to get back on the track - it looks fantastic, it's certainly one of the best tracks I have ridden over and the turf seems as green and lush as ever.”

Australian rider Glen Boss, partner of the legendary triple Melbourne Cup heroine Makybe Diva and riding in his first Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, commented: "Obviously, it is a great feeling to be riding at Ascot.

"To look back on your career and say you rode at Ascot and against the best jockeys in the world will be wonderful.

“I have never been here before and cannot wait to tangle with these guys.”

Japanese ace Yuichi Fukunaga is having his second European riding venture, having previously been in 1999. He said: “It is an honour to be chosen to represent the Rest of the World team and Japan.”

Referring to Japanese champion jockey Yutaka Take, who rode in the 2004 and 2003 Shergar Cups and had three seconds, Fukunaga commented: “I would like to make him envious by riding a Shergar Cup winner.”

The Great Britain and Ireland team is headed by jockey captain Jamie Spencer, the 2005 champion jockey in Britain.

He is joined by Michael Kinane, one of the most successful jockeys of all time, Hayley Turner, the first female jockey to be champion apprentice in Britain, Ryan Moore, who looks set to become champion jockey for the first time this year, Seb Sanders and Robert Winston,

Team manager for the Great Britain and Ireland team is Jason Weaver, the former jockey turned television pundit who rode more than 1,000 winners including the 1995 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot on Double Trigger.

Frankie Dettori is jockey captain for the Rest of the World team.

The popular Italian will be joined by Glen Boss from Australia, regular partner of the three-time Melbourne Cup heroine Makybe Diva, Yuichi Fukunaga, one of Japan's leading riders, French ace Gerald Mosse, Doug Whyte, the South African who has been champion jockey in Hong Kong for the past six season, and Emma-Jayne Wilson, the riding phenomenon from Canada, who became both the first female rider and only the third apprentice to win to win the riding title at Woodbine last year.

Michael Roberts is team manager for the Rest of the World team. The 52-year-old was champion jockey in Britain in 1992 as well as 11-times champion jockey in his native South Africa. He rode close to 4,000 winners and won the 1988 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot on Mtoto.

PRIMARY GOES FOR GLORY IN AMERICA ON SATURDAY

Primary goes for Grade One glory in America on Saturday when he takes on home and Irish opposition in the six-runner US$400,000 10-furlong Secretariat Stakes on turf at Arlington Park.

Owned by Highclere Thoroughbred Racing’s Cricket Ground Syndicate and trained by William Haggas, the British raider is the race’s dark horse.

Primary drew the four stall in yesterday’s draw and will be ridden by Robby Albarado, a top rider at the track which is 30 miles to the North West of Chicago.

The three-year-old was made the 5/1 fourth favourite in the morning line odds behind 7/5 market leader Showing Up, 5/2 chance Go Between, both trained in the USA, and Irish challenger Ivan Denisovich who is a 4/1 chance.

Harry Herbert, managing director of Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, is excited by the challenge and so are the shareowners in Primary.

It had been hoped that 20 people associated with the horse would travel over to Chicago and some went yesterday but the security scare today could prevent the others, Herbert and Haggas make the journey.

Herbert commented today: “Primary is in good form and we found this race for him because of his pedigree. He is by Giant’s Causeway out of a Mr Prospector mare from the family of Fappiano which is very American.

“We felt that there weren’t huge opportunities for him at home and this race stood out as the one for him.

“Primary is an interesting horse as he has won four of his six starts and he definitely seems to be improving. Physically he is an impressive horse to look at - he has certainly got stronger and stronger as the year has gone on.

“This is his first crack of the year at Group One company. He has not run a bad race all year. Primary did not stay the mile and half of the Chester Vase but was only beaten three lengths by Papal Bull with Dragon Dancer in second.

“After that race, we were fairly short of options with him, and the Italian race was there with good prize money.

“We tried a different way of riding him there, coming from off the pace, and he won well which was encouraging as we had previously thought he was better suited to making the running.”

Primary won his first two races last year, a maiden at Leicester and a conditions race at Newmarket, both over seven furlongs, before disappointing in the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes. He was trained then by David Loder who stepped down from training at the end of that season.

Haggas, based at Newmarket, took over responsibility for the three-year-old who won the Group Three Betfred Classic Trial at Sandown on his April 29 reappearance over 10 furlongs.

Primary then stepped up to 12 furlongs in the MBNA Europe Bank Chester Vase on May 11 and tried to make all but faded in the final furlong.

He was then sent to Italy on June 17 for the 10-furlong Listed Gran Premio d’Italia at Milan which he won very well after being held up in the rear.

Herbert is looking forward to Saturday: “Primary is coming into the Secretariat in fine form though like any Group One, it will be a tough race. Whatever happens, we will learn more about him.

“With the pedigree he has, he would establish a stud value if he won on Saturday.

“William is happy with Primary who arrived in America on Monday. Primary did all his work before setting off and will just be exercised for the next two days before being unleashed on Saturday.

“We have not had very many American raiders - principally Petrushka and Lake Coniston, who both ran in the Breeders’ Cup.

“We thought about running Primary in the US$1-million race earlier in the year at Colonial Downs but in the end the quarantine situation was very complicated there and we thought it would be too big an ask of the horse.

“Quarantine is much easier at Arlington. It is the dream of owners to run in Group One races and to have a horse capable of going for such a race abroad is very exciting.

“We thought it important to have a local jockey on board. The rhythm of races over there is so different from British ones.

“Robby Albarado is one of the leading local jockeys and we are thrilled to have secured him.

“We are confident that we have Primary in the right spot and that he will run a big race. It is a great day of racing with the Arlington Million and Beverly D being run on the same card.”

Primary was bred in Kentucky, USA, and sold at Keeneland Sales in the same state as a yearling.

Herbert explained: “We bought him at Keeneland September Sales. We nearly didn’t get him vetted at the sale because we thought it probably would be a waste of time and money as we would not be able to afford him because of his pedigree.

“But thank goodness we did, as we were able to buy him for US$140,000 - which at the time was about £80,000.

“The fact that he has won Group Three and Listed races this year makes it particularly interesting for his future.”

Highclere Thoroughbred Racing is the most successful racehorse multiple ownership operation in Europe and has had 12 winners so far this year and collected prize money worth £246,000.

Herbert added: “The new syndicates were launched last month and they are going well. The stallion parades take place in October and the first yearling sale we go to is Deauville later this month.

“Our season is going well - Numeric won at Glorious Goodwood and we had two seconds and a third at Royal Ascot. The two-year-olds are starting to appear and we are looking forward to them running.”
