HOGAN CONTEMPLATING PETROS ROSE OF LANCASTER STAKES FOR COMMON WORLD - Clive Cox hoping to run Thyolo in totesport Handicap

Irish trainer Tom Hogan is contemplating an international raid on the £65,000 Group Three Petros Rose Of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock Park on Saturday, August 6, with Common World, whose participation will depend on a final decision on Thursday.

"If it is any quicker than good Common World won't run in the Petros Rose Of Lancaster Stakes - I would be hoping that it is easier than good rather than quicker than good," explained the master of Fattheen.

The six-year-old made no impression on his last start in a handicap at Galway last month over an extended mile on fast ground.

"I would say that he'll be suited by going back to the extended 10 furlongs - the trip won't be a problem to him," he explained.

Common World has been placed on two of his three starts in Britain this season including in the Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster and the Spring Cup at Newbury.

"He likes it over in Britain - I don't know if he likes travelling and you can interview him yourself about that!
"I don't know if I'm expecting a big run as I'll have to see what's in the race. Mark Johnston's Bandari and others make it a hot contest and we would look at it. My horse is in good form at the moment but it would be hard to see him beating some of those other horses."

Clive Cox today revealed that Thyolo is an intended runner in the richest race of the day at Haydock Park on Saturday, the £80,000 totesport Handicap providing the ground stays on the fast side.

He said: "If Haydock can guarantee me that it is not soft ground then Thyolo will run in the totesport Handicap- if it's good he'll be there, but if it's soft he won't, it's as simple as that really."
The Bering gelding was beaten just under six lengths into fourth by Able Baker Charlie in a classified stakes at Newbury on his last start, having finished third to Imperial Stride in the Wolferton Handicap at Royal Ascot at York earlier in the campaign.

"Unfortunately it was a bit too soft for him at Newbury last time," explained the Lambourn trainer. "He's fine and in good order - he's a horse that has been placed at Royal Ascot twice with plenty of ability so this is the kind of race that is an obvious target for him on decent ground and I would hope for a big run from him."

Kirkland Tellwright, Haydock's Clerk of the Course, reported the current going as: GOOD.

He went on to explain: "The forecast for Wednesday is a mixture of sunny spells and showers. If we got the worst of the weather it could turn softer but I think the probability is that the going will be good."

GREY DAY APPROACHING AT NEWMARKET

Value of unique race increases again to £20,000

Owners and trainers of grey sprinters are reminded that entries for the third running of the SportingOdds.com Grey Horse Handicap at Newmarket on Saturday, August, 13, which has gone up in value again this year and is now worth £20,000 added (compared with £15,000 last year and £10,000 in 2003), close on Monday, August 8. The ratings band for the six-furlong handicap for 3-y-o and up has also been increased this year to 0-85 (from 0-80 the last two years).

For the first time this year, the winning owner and trainer will each receive a kilogram of solid silver to emphasise the uniqueness of the race. The grooms in charge of the horses judged to be first, second and third in the Best Turned Out competition will receive £100, £50 and £25 respectively.

"This is a once-a-year opportunity for a grey horse to write its name in the record books in Britain's only race restricted to greys," commented Newmarket's Clerk of the Course, Michael Prosser. "The spectacle of a dozen or more grey horses charging up the July Course is a fantastic sight and I hope we will get plenty of entries for what is now a valuable race for the class of horse it is catering for."

The inaugural 2003 running was won by Smart Predator in a field of 13 and last year's renewal by Middleton Grey in a field of 12.

There is a similar race restricted to non-greys on next Friday evening's July Course card.

88 FOR CHAMPAGNE STAKES

The 2005 renewal of the £100,000 Champagne Stakes, the highlight of the Friday card at the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival at Doncaster on September 9, has attracted 88 entries, details of which are revealed today, Wednesday, August 3.

This seven-furlong, Group Two contest is one of the few juvenile races to have eluded Irish maestro Aidan O'Brien, who has 14 to choose from this year. These are headed by George Washington, winner of the Group Two Railway Stakes at the Curragh last time out and currently ante-post favourite for the 2006 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. Other leading Ballydoyle entries would appear to be Ivan Denisovich, successful in the Group Two July Stakes at Newmarket last month and also Horatio Nelson, triumphant at the same meeting in the Group Three Superlative Stakes.

One trainer who has made the Champagne Stakes his own is Barry Hills. He has enjoyed five wins in this race, including last year with Etlaala. His other four winners were Distant Music (1999), Auction House (1998), Sure Blade (1985) and Sexton Blake (1977). The Lambourn handler looks to have a good chance of adding a sixth Champagne Stakes to his CV with his nine entries including Criminal Act, a promising third at Goodwood last week, Listed Chesham Stakes runner-up Global Genius, Killybegs, an impressive winner on his debut at Newmarket, recent Newbury maiden scorer Red Ash and River Kintyre, last seen out when victorious at Chester in May.

Another trainer well-represented is Michael Jarvis, who has half a dozen entries to choose from. The Newmarket handler, successful way back in 1970 with Breeder's Dream, has made entries for Deutschland, Lennoxtown, Mohtarres, Narvik, Portcullis and Tower Hill.
Mick Channon and John Dunlop both have five entries each, with Channon's quintet containing Italian Group Three scorer Guest Connections and Richmond Stakes runner-up Upper Hand.

Sir Michael Stoute, triumphant with Final Straw back in 1979, has an exciting trio engaged including City Of Troy, who made a very favourable impression when making a winning debut at Newbury last month. Stoute's other two entries are Final Verse, a winner at Doncaster on his debut last month and Regal Royale, who scored impressively on his debut at Newbury on July 23.

Other interesting contenders include the Marcus Tregoning-trained Sir Percy, unbeaten in three starts to date with latest win coming in the Group Two Vintage Stakes over seven furlongs at Glorious Goodwood on July 27. Asset, one of three Richard Hannon-trained entries, was an impressive six-length winner at Yarmouth in June while the combination of owner John Fretwell and trainer Eoghan O'Neill, so successful with their two-year-olds this season, could be represented by Silent Times, runner-up to Close To You at Newbury last time. Close To You, trained by Terry Mills, is another Champagne Stakes entry and has won three of his four starts. John Fretwell also has the Ed McMahon-trained Romantic Evening, a winner last time out at York, engaged.

Steven Clarke, General Manager at Doncaster, commented: "We are delighted to have received so many high-class entries for the Champagne Stakes.

"The race is a very good guide to future success at the highest level and forms the thrilling centrepiece to Friday's programme at the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival."
