THE VALUE BETTING COLUMN EVERY SATURDAY

GOODWOOD, SATURDAY AUGUST 23, 2003

Going =Good to firm

BP= best odds from Coral Eurobet, Blue Square, Ladbrokes, Tote, Stanley, Bet365 & William Hill

3:05pm £100,000 Celebration Mile (Class A) (Group 2) (3yo+), 1m

1) (3) 1-24 Where Or When Terry Mills 4-9-07 Kevin Darley
Won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes as Ascot last year and not disgraced on his two starts this year when stable was not really firing. Unlucky in this race last year and should go well again, but stable form is still something of a concern.

BP = 7/1 Ladbrokes

2) (5) -117 Dandoun John Dunlop 5-9-04 Seb Sanders
Defeated Domedriver in a Group Two at Saint-Cloud on his penultimate start but disappointing last time out. Will like the fast ground and cannot be discounted but others appeal more.

BP = 9/1 Blue Square, Ladbrokes, Tote, Bet365 & William Hill

3) (7) 0121 Passing Glance Andrew Balding 4-9-01 Jamie Spencer
Has shown steady improvement throughout his career and came good in Listed company at Salisbury last time, after having previously been second in a Listed contest over this course and distance. Game and genuine, but will probably struggle in this class.

BP = 8/1 Tote & Stanleybet

4) (6) 4-32 Priors Lodge Marcus Tregoning 5-9-01 Willie Ryan
Quite a useful performer on his day but needs everything to fall right for him and is probably not up to this class in any class.

BP = 12/1 Tote

5) (4) 6210 Tillerman Amanda Perrett 7-9-01 Richard Hughes
Grand performer over the years and successful in this contest last year. Loves fast ground and should go well again. However, he did have the run of the race last year and was very disappointing last time out. Opposable on balance.

BP = 7/2 Coral Eurobet

6) (1) 2122 Arakan Sir Michael Stoute 3-8-09 Kieren Fallon
Very nicely bred colt who started this year in handicaps but has progressed to Pattern race company. Second in the Jersey Stakes and an unlucky second in the Lennox Stakes over seven furlongs here. Step back up to a mile not a problem and should go well, but no value.

BP = 11/8 Coral Eurobet, Blue Square, Ladbrokes, Bet 365 & William Hill

7) (2) 6529 Hurricane Alan Richard Hannon 3-8-09 Pat Eddery
Craven Stakes winner earlier this season and has better form than the form figures would suggest subsequently. Stable won the Sussex Stakes with an outsider and this one is not out of it either.

BP = 18/1 Tote

SUMMARY
An open race with outsider HURRICANE ALAN making the most appeal as the value option, with question marks over several of his better-fancied rivals. Back him each-way.
