ANTICIPATION BUILDS AS CHAMPAGNE DRAWS CLOSER

A total of 66 entries have held their ground at yesterday's forfeit stage for this year's £120,000 Group Two Champagne Stakes at Doncaster on Friday, September 12, 2003, it is revealed today Wednesday, August 20, 2003.

The Aidan O'Brien-trained Antonius Pius, unbeaten in two outings including the Group Two Anheuser Busch Railway Stakes at the Curragh in June, getting the better of Spanish Ace by half a length, heads the 19 Irish entries, all of which are provided by the master of Ballydoyle.

O'Brien has never won this prestigious contest and his squad also includes Old Deuteronomy, who found stable-companion One Cool Cat, ante-post favourite for next year's 2000 Guineas, a length too powerful on his last start in the Group One Independent Waterford Wedgwood Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh on August 10, Tycoon, the one and a half length runner-up to Pearl Of Love in the Listed Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, and Celtic Cat, runner-up in yesterday's Listed Acomb Stakes at York.

In contrast David Loder has been victorious in the last three renewals of the Champagne Stakes courtesy of Noverre in 2000, Dubai Destination the following season and Almushahar last year. His six possibles include Acomb Stakes hero Rule Of Law, who gained his second successive victory on the Knavesmire yesterday, and Botanical, runner-up in the Group Three Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The Roger Charlton-trained Three Valleys could only finish third when odds-on favourite in the Phoenix Stakes last time. However he was found to be full of mucus after that event and it would be no surprise if the horse, described by his handler as the best juvenile that he has ever trained, returns to the form that he exhibited when producing an awesome performance to win the Coventry Stakes by eight lengths.

Any representative at Town Moor from Barry Hills powerful stable must always be respected. The trainer indicated that Haafhd could run in the Champagne Stakes after the son of Alhaarth, who won this contest in 1995 for the late Major Dick Hern, destroyed a good field by five lengths in the Listed Stan James Online Stakes at Newbury last Friday. Hills could also run Isidore Bonheur, Mutawaffer and Oman Gulf.

Other notable possibles include the Henry Cecil-trained Akimbo, who was well-backed for the 2004 2000 Guineas before being beaten a head on his only outing in a maiden at Newbury last Saturday, Lucky Story, trained by Mark Johnston, winner of his last three starts including the Group Two Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes at Goodwood last month, when beating The Mighty Tiger by a length and a quarter, and the Brian Meehan-trained Carrizo Creek, who beat Old Deuteronomy by half a length in the Group Two Four Star Sales Richmond Stakes at the same venue.

Doncaster's Racecourse Manager, Steven Clarke, said "Over the years the Champagne Stakes has been won by some exceptional juveniles and this season's renewal looks likely to continue that trend."
