GODOLPHIN’S 100TH

Godolphin's Sulamani, ridden by American jockey David Flores for the first time, won the 21st running of the Arlington Million, the fourth leg of the World Series Racing Championship in Chicago yesterday (Saturday, giving Godolphin a 100th Group One/Grade One victory.

The Gary Stevens-ridden Storming Home, who was first past the post, was placed fourth after a stewards' enquiry and an objection in one of the most dramatic runnings of the American 10-furlong race.

Stevens and Storming Home appeared to have the race won approaching the wire as the late-charging Sulamani moved closer, but in the final strides Storming Home appeared to spook, and went wildly to the right, causing interference to Paolini and Kaieteur who dead heated for third place. as well as second place finisher Sulamani.

The move caused Stevens to be dislodged from the saddle and he received a nasty blow from the hooves of Kaieteur and lay prostrate on the turf some 20 yards past the line. He was however reported as being conscious as he left the track for hospital where he had x-rays taken on his left shoulder.

Storming Home crossed the line in first position but after reviewing the evidence the stewards took Storming Home down to fourth place, awarding the race to Sulamani, promoting Kaieteur and Paolini in a dead heat for second place.

Beauchamp Pilot cut out the early pace under Eddie Ahern, from The Tin Man, Perfect Drift and Touch of Land. At the head of the stretch Stevens, who had enjoyed a perfect trip moved Storming Home through to take up the running in the final furlong, and victory looked assured until Storming Home's last-minute antics cost him the race in the stewards' room.

Sulamani was settled in mid division early and made a huge forward move from the home turn. He was eating up the ground but the post came too soon for him to reel in Storming Home. Paolini raced in 9th spot for much of the race, improved to fifth at the head of the stretch, and ran on to the line with Kaieteur, without ever quite looking likely to get to Storming Home.

Victory for Sulamani in the Million, allied to his second place finish in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot takes him to the head of the World Racing Series Championships.

Godolphin's racing manager Simon Crisford said: "We would have preferred not to have won in this manner, but it's an accomplishment to have won our 100th Group I race in under ten years. It was a shame Storming Home could not keep the victory."

Jockey David Flores added " I had to go around and circle the field. He came on very strong at the end. He performed really really well. What happened to the other horse (Storming Home) had nothing to do with me. I just got lucky to get put up."

Rene Douglas, rider of Kaieteur, who lodged the objection to Storming Home, said" Is Gary (Stevens) OK? I only missed him by inches. It wasn't his fault, but he definitely bothered me. I had to do something, it was a million dollar race."

Andreas Suborics, rider of the German challenger Paolini added" I got bumped really bad at the start, then I had a beautiful run down the backstretch, and got into a good position on the turn into the straight. I was still in second the last twenty yards, before the winner came over and I think it cost me the second place."

FANTASTIC 77 FOR EMIRATES AIRLINE CHAMPION STAKES

A superb 77-strong entry is revealed today for the £400,000 Group 1 Emirates Airline Champion Stakes, run on Newmarket's Rowley Mile course on Saturday, October 18.

The entries, up 11 on the same stage last year, include virtually all Europe's leading performers among them the winners of both the Sagitta 2000 Guineas and Sagitta 1000 Guineas this season, Refuse To Bend and Russian Rhythm. The latter showed she was just as effective over ten furlongs when landing the Group 1 Vodafone Nassau Stakes at Goodwood on her latest appearance.

Vodafone Derby hero Kris Kin, from the Sir Michael Stoute stable, and Alamshar, brilliant winner of both the Irish Derby and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot, and the 2002 Vodafone Derby scorer High Chaparral are among the other classic victors engaged.

Other leading three-year-olds include John Gosden's highly-promising performer Ikhtyar, Sagitta 2000 Guineas third and Vodafone Derby fourth Norse Dancer, last year's Darley Dewhurst Stakes hero Tout Seul, Kalaman, who was arguably unlucky in the St James's Palace Stakes last time out and the Irish 1,000 Guineas winner and Vodafone Oaks runner-up Yesterday.

Top older horses entered include Nayef, the 2001 Emirates Airline Champion Stakes hero and Falbrav, this season's Coral-Eclipse Stakes winner and the Group 2 Scottish Derby victor Princely Venture, who looks open to further improvement.

In addition to High Chaparral and Yesterday, champion trainer Aidan O'Brien has a further 14 entries, including the progressive Mingun and Hold That Tiger, victorious in the Group 1 Grand Criterium at Longchamp last season.

There are a dozen Godolphin-owned entries, among them this season's Dubai World Cup hero Moon Ballad, who was runner-up to Storming Home in the 2002 Emirates Airline Champion Stakes, Dubai Destination, winner of the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot last time out and Sulamani, winner of last night's Arlington Million.

A strong overseas entry includes six from France, one from Germany and one from Denmark. Included amongst the French entries are Elie Lellouche's high-class filly Bright Sky and from the same stable Super Celebre, runner-up in the French Derby. The Danish challenger is Dano-Mast, triumphant in the Group 2 Prix Dollar at Longchamp last season while the German entry Ransom O'War defeated Godolphin's Highdown last time out to land the Group 1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis at Munich.

Lisa Hancock, Managing Director of Newmarket Racecourses, said: "We could have hardly hoped for a better entry for the 2003 Emirates Airline Dubai Champion Stakes and the race promises to form a memorable highlight of Champions' Day on Saturday, October 18."

O'BRIEN HAS 29 OUT OF 113 DARLEY DEWHURST STAKES ENTRIES

A total of 113 entries are revealed today for the Group One £230,000 Darley Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday, October 18, with Aidan O'Brien - who saddled a 1-2-3 led by Rock Of Gibraltar in 2001 - accounting for 29 of the entries.

O'Brien's entries include One Cool Cat, impressive winner of last Sunday's Group 1 Independent Waterford Wedgwood Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh, where he was a length too powerful for stable-companion Old Deuteronomy.

The O'Brien contingent also includes Antonius Pius, unbeaten in two starts including the Group 2 Anheuser Busch Railway Stakes at the Curragh in June, Troubadour, an impressive three-and-a-half length maiden winner at the same venue last Sunday, and Tycoon, runner-up to Pearl Of Love in the Listed Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The Roger Charlton-trained Three Valleys was sent off a warm favourite for the Phoenix Stakes having earlier won the Group 3 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot by eight lengths from Botanical with subsequent Listed scorer Privy Seal a further neck adrift. Three Valleys could only muster third in Ireland but he was subsequently found to have been full of mucus and it is entirely possible that the true running of this Diesis colt, described by his handler as certainly the best two-year-old that I've trained,' was not on display.

Mark Johnston has arguably the most powerful team of juveniles in Britain and his six entries include Lucky Story, winner of his last three starts including the Group 2 Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes at Goodwood last month, when getting the better of The Mighty Tiger by a length and a quarter. Johnston could also run Pearl Of Love, Badr, Bessemer, Chester Le Street or Leicester Square.

Andre Fabre provides four of the five French-trained entries - Diamond Green, a five length winner of a contest for unraced colts and geldings at Deauville on July 6, Mountain Top, Saville Row, who could be tailor-made for this contest after victories at Chantilly and Deauville earlier in the campaign, and Valixir, unbeaten in two starts. The other Gallic entry, Bago, hails from Jonathan Pease's powerful Chantilly training base. This Nashwan colt won his only start at Deauville earlier this month.

Lisa Hancock, Managing Director of Newmarket Racecourses, said: "Year after year the Darley Dewhurst Stakes attracts the best two-year-olds in Europe and, with all the top stables well represented, the 2003 race promises to continue that trend."
