EMIRATES WORLD SERIES UPDATE

Andreas Suborics has his eye on horseracing's true World Championship.

"I want to become the first Austrian World Champion since Nikki Lauda"; stated Andreas Suborics at the press conference held in Baden-Baden prior to the running of the fourth leg of the Emirates World Series; the UAE Grosser Preis von Baden, over a mile and a half at Iffezheim Racecourse on Sunday.

Austrian Nikki Lauda created history by winning the Formula One Motor Racing World Championship on three occasions 1975, 1977 and 1984.

Sponsored by Emirates, the award winning international airline of the United Arab Emirates, the Emirates World Series travels around the globe taking in the twelve most prestigious thoroughbred horse races in ten countries on four continents to establish one true world champion.

The 30-year-old Austrian riding sensation is still celebrating his win in the third leg of the Emirates World Series; the Arlington Million at Arlington Park, Chicago aboard Silvano on August 18th.

Commenting on his Arlington win Suborics enthused, "It was amazing. It was the first time that a German horse has won a Grade One in America and it's also the first time that an Austrian jockey has won a Grade One there. There was lots of coverage of the win in the German and Austrian press.

"The win was very good for the sport and I hope for more success like that. I had a good position throughout the race and in the last three furlongs Silvano was on the bridle, after he went past the winning post the feeling was unbelievable and it was a dream come true."

"After that win I have a chance of riding in at least four of the remaining Emirates World Series races and if I win these then I will become like Nikki Lauda and become the next Austrian World Champion."

Suborics will be aboard the Andreas Wohler-trained Sabiango in the mile and a half contest on Sunday. Sabiango, a half brother to Silvano, is described as the best three-year-old in training in Germany.

Asked about Sabiango, Suborics said, "We were very pleased with his last piece of work which I rode him in, everything is prepared for Sunday. He will have no problem with the big field as it means there will be a good pace. The ground at Baden-Baden yesterday was firm and with the rain today it will become good. However if there is any more rain he may not run.

"We also have Paolini running in the race and he has as good chance, you can ignore his last form as the ground was very soft. It was hard to choose which horse I was going to ride so I eventually went for Sabiango as I love the horse and I discovered him as a two-year-old. But if it goes wrong I will not be the first jockey to have made a mistake in choosing!"

Suborics is currently lying in joint second place along with Michael Kinane in the 2001 Emirates World Series and a win in Sunday's race will take him clear of Emirates World Series leading jockey Jerry Bailey.

After Sunday Suborics could find himself riding Paolini in the Canadian International, the sixth leg of the Series, Sabiango in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe; Lucien Barriere and Silvano in the Carlton Draught Cox Plate in Melbourne and the Hong Kong Cup in December.

Commenting on his likely trip to Australia he said, "If all is good with Silvano after his next run he will go for the Cox Plate. I have heard so many beautiful things about the racecourse and the great atmosphere, I would really like to go there. I think Silvano will have a good chance in the race but he will have to beat the tough filly Sunline."
