VALUE BETTING COLUMN every Saturday Sandown Park, Saturday, July 7, 2007 3.15pm £440,000 GROUP ONE CORAL-ECLIPSE STAKES, 10f 7y GOING: GOOD TO SOFT, SOFT IN PLACES 1)(8) 231(6)-4 GEORGE WASHINGTON Aidan O'Brien 4-9-07 Seamie Heffernan. Champion miler last season who flopped at stud. Showed he retains plenty of ability when finishing well to be fourth in the Queen Anne Stakes over a mile last time. Brilliant individual but there are doubts about this trip on soft ground. BP= 5/1 2)(7) 6-(1)(6)35 KANDIDATE Clive Brittain 5-9-07t Eddie Ahern Admirable Group Three winner who was no match for Red Rocks when third over the course and distance in April. Best form has come on a sound surface and this looks beyond him. BP= 100/1 3)(1) 10-413 NOTNOWCATO Sir Michael Stoute 5-9-07 Ryan Moore Runner-up in this race last year and has since collected a brace of Group One wins at around 10-furlongs, most recently when holding Dylan Thomas at the Curragh. Likely to appreciate soft ground and cannot be overlooked. BP= 11/2 4)(2) 31-010 ADMIRALOFTHEFLEET Aidan O'Brien 3-8-10 Mick Kinane Won the Group Two Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot on good to soft last season and took the 10-furlong Chester Vase in May. No match for Authorized when 10th in the Derby but that was his first attempt at 12 furlongs and he is proven over this distance. BP= 12/1 5)(3) 021-10 ARCHIPENKO Aidan O'Brien 3-8-10 Colm O'Donoghue Looked the part on his seasonal debut in May when holding Yellowstone over the distance in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial. He failed to show his true running when tailed-off last in Authorized's Derby and a better showing is expected here. BP= 20/1 6)(6) 31-11 AUTHORIZED Peter Chapple-Hyam 3-8-10 Frankie Dettori Easily the pick of the three-year-olds on his five-length victory in the Vodafone Derby over two furlongs further. Will relish the wet conditions having sauntered through heavy ground to win the Racing Post Trophy over a mile last term. Excellent claims but Derby winners have a mixed record in this race and he is going to start at very short odds. BP= 8/15 7)(5) 3-(2)310 CHAMPERY Mark Johnston 3-8-10 Joe Fanning Honest Listed race winner who ran well to finish third in the German 2,000 Guineas this spring but looks out of his depth here. Will act as pacemaker to Authorized. BP= 200/1 8)(4) -50203 YELLOWSTONE Aidan O'Brien 3-8-10 Fran Berry Possesses a decent level of ability but has been found wanting three times at the highest level, most recently when eighth in the Derby. Consistent sort but others look a bit better..BP= 100/1 SUMMARY Authorized is no value at odds on, while George Washington, for all his brilliance, is not a viable proposition with so many question marks hanging over him. It could pay to side with Admiralofthefleet who should be the best of the O’Brien three-year-olds. He is good value each-way.
