IRRIDESCENCE GLOWING AHEAD OF UAE HYDRA PROPERTIES FALMOUTH STAKES

*DRAYTON PRIMED FOR DARLEY JULY CUP BID *

Star South African mare Irridescence remains firmly on target for the £200,000 Group One UAE Hyrda Properties Falmouth Stakes, the highlight on day one of the Ritz Club July Festival at Newmarket on Wednesday, July 11, after pleasing connections in a racecourse gallop this morning (Wednesday, July 4).

The Mike de Kock-trained six-year-old, who had the great Ouija Board in third when winning the Group One Audemars Piguet Queen Elizabeth Cup over 10 furlongs at Sha Tin, Hong Kong in April, 2006, worked on Newmarket’s July Course in company with stablemate Asiatic Boy.

Assistant trainer Trevor Brown is overseeing preparations at Geoff Wragg’s Newmarket yard - where the South Africans are boarding - prior to de Kock’s arrival on Monday.

Brown revealed today: “I was very happy with Irridescence’s gallop. The course was wet so I wouldn’t say she put up a great time but considering how wet the course was, I think you can forgive her for that. I wouldn’t be worried at all if the ground was soft on the day of the race. In fact, I’m not worried at all about the ground.”

Irridescence is a proven top-flight performer from nine to 13 furlongs but has also tasted victory over a mile in an open handicap at Newmarket racecourse, South Africa, in November, 2004.

The daughter of Caesour had two starts for trainer John Hammond in France last term before returning to de Kock, one of which was a fifth-place finish to Librettist over a mile in the Group One Prix du Moulin de Longchamp.

Brown reported: “She’s going the right way. The mile may be a little bit short of her best as she’s more of a 10-furlong filly. She hasn’t run for three months so she might just be in need of the run but having said all that, she’ll be right there. I’m very happy with her progress. She’s done well since arriving in England. Everything has been top class besides the weather!

“She’s very versatile and the nice thing about her is that she’s got enough pace. Since the race in Hong Kong, she’s been going to the front every time and prior to that she’d never gone to the front. That being the case, I’m not too worried about her not having the pace over a mile, although saying that, it is shorter than her optimum.”

The South African challenger can expect stiff competition in the prestigious contest with no fewer than eight individual Group One winners entered, including the winners of the English, Irish and French 1000 Guineas (Finsceal Beo and Darjina) and Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes heroine Red Evie.

The de Kock-trained Drayton is also on course for his tilt at Ritz Club July Festival Group One glory in the £375,000 Darley July Cup over six furlongs on Friday, July 13.

The Danetime three-year-old heads to Europe’s richest sprint after a pleasing fifth-place finish to Soldier’s Tale in the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 23. That effort followed a below-par run when he didn’t seem to stay a mile in the Stan James 2000 Guineas on Newmarket’s NatWest Rowley Mile in May.

Brown continued: “Drayton is on course for the July Cup and I’m very happy with him. He’s come out of Royal Ascot very well and I’d actually say he’s better for it. Hopefully, we’ve found another three lengths and he was only beaten just over three lengths. It was a cracking run.

“You can put a line through the Guineas run. Everything was against him. He jumped, pulled too hard and it wasn’t there. I don’t think he gets a mile anyway.”

Brown, who is unconcerned about the recent wet weather, continued: “It poured down just before Drayton’s race at Ascot and he won in the mud in Ireland so that doesn’t bother him at all. I don’t think he’s the type of horse who’d be bothered if the ground was riding on the top either. He’s a pretty straightforward, sound, hard-knocking horse.”

The Ritz Club July Festival takes place at Newmarket’s July Course from Wednesday, July 11 to Friday, July 13, with each of the three days offering a feast of fantastic racing.

LESTER & FRANKIE WILL OFFICIALLY OPEN THE NEW-LOOK JULY COURSE

At 12 noon on Wednesday, July 11, Newmarket’s two most famous residents, Lester Piggott and Frankie Dettori, will officially open the new July Course facilities following the £10m redevelopment of the area behind the stands.

Newmarket’s Managing Director, Lisa Hancock, said: “Frankie lives just up the road from the July Course and it has long been one of his favourite tracks, while Lester lives just across the Heath and had a record second to none here, including a record 10 July Cup victories. We thought they would be the ideal pair to open our new facilities.”

CLASSICAL MUSIC A STRONG THEME FOR FESTIVAL OPENING

Classical music with a modern twist will be a strong opening theme for the Ritz Club July Festival. On Tuesday evening, July 10, a gala concert, headlined by the acclaimed operatic pop group G4, will open the week's festivities and the theme will continue on Wednesday, July 11, with a series of performances by classical music stars before racing, between races and after the last.

Since finishing runner-up in the 2004 X-Factor final on ITV, G4 have gone on to be the most successful male reality show group ever. Following a spectacular debut in 2004, they have had a number one album, selling over 1.2m in a mere 12 months, and completed two sell-out UK tours.

Local schools will also be involved in the opening gala concert as pupils from Swaffham Prior Primary, Ditton Lodge Primary, Kennett Primary, All Saints' Primary, St Felix Middle, Scaltback Middle, Paddocks Primary and Moulton Primary schools take to the stage as a warm-up act for G4. There will also be students from the Lights, Music, Action theatre school and the Stagecoach Choir.

Gates will open at 6pm on Tuesday evening with the choirs performing from 6.30pm – 8pm. G4 will be live on stage at 8.30pm. Tickets start at £25 and can be booked by calling 01638 675 500.

On the following day, "Classic FM Day", Wednesday, July 11, five different classical performers will take to the stage to entertain racegoers during the afternoon on the first day of the Ritz Club July Festival. Exceptional young violinist Ching, charismatic electric string quartet Eclipse, accomplished pianist and flautist Soraya Mafi, stunning all-girl opera group Apassionata and internationally renowned Icelandic tenor Gardar Thor Cortes will all play sets on the July Course stage.

12.30pm – 1pm Ching
1.45pm – 1.50pm Eclipse
2.15pm – 2.30pm Soraya Mafi
2.50pm – 3.05pm Appassionata

59 GO FORWARD FOR WEATHERBYS SUPER SPRINT - VAUGHAN HOPEFUL OF A FANATICAL SUCCESS

A total of 59 horses remain after the forfeit stage (Tuesday, July 3) for the £135,000 Weatherbys Super Sprint, which takes place at Newbury on Saturday, July 21.

The lucrative five-furlong contest offers fantastic rewards to classy juveniles that were shrewdly purchased at a bargain price from the previous season’s yearling sales in the UK and Ireland at Tattersalls, Goffs, Doncaster and Ascot.

The Weatherbys Super Sprint carries a first-place prize of £77,908 and offers prize money down to 10th place. The race is restricted to horses which were bought for 37,000 guineas or less before July 1, 2006, or for 40,000 guineas after June 30, 2006.

The Ed Vaughan-trained Fanatical won on her debut over six furlongs at Newbury on June 9 and belied her 16,000 guineas purchase price when beaten under three lengths in the Group Two Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 20.

The Newmarket handler revealed today: “The Weatherbys Super Sprint is the target. There’s a possibility that we’ll make an entry for the Cherry Hinton Stakes at Newmarket but my feeling is that I’d prefer to go straight to Newbury.

“She was only beaten two and three-quarter lengths in eighth at Ascot and she ran a great race. I thought about running her in the Albany Stakes but I think we made the right decision because the ground was softer on that day.

“I think over five furlongs she could probably get away with a bit of ease in the ground. I don’t think it’s too much of a factor but obviously I’d prefer to keep her on what she’s run best on, which is good or faster.

“I think the race will really suit her so I’d be hopeful of a big run. She has 8st 3lb and I’m happy with that as she’s a little filly who’ll appreciate a lighter weight.”

The 59 acceptors are headed by the Jamie Osborne-trained Drawnfromthepast, a 36,000 guineas Doncaster yearling, who scored a head verdict over Kingsgate Native in the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 19, and is top-weight with 9st 7lb due to being the most expensively bought horse in the race.

Last year’s victor, the Sylvester Kirk-trained Elhamri, also took the Weatherbys Super Sprint after securing the same Royal Ascot Listed contest.

Weights are determined according to sale price with an allowance awarded of one pound for each 2,500 guineas paid under 40,000 guineas..

Elhamri (28,000 guineas yearling) and Drawnfromthepast are relatively expensive buys when compared with the speedy 2000 winner Superstar Leo, who cost connections a mere 3,400 guineas at Tattersalls in 1999, or the 2001 heroine Good Girl who was an Ir£9,000 guineas purchase at Goffs.

William Haggas saddled Superstar Leo and he could run the unraced Acclamation colt Mandelieu (8st 13lb) this year.

The inaugural Weatherbys Super Sprint in 1991 went to the crack sprinter Paris House, trained by Jack Berry. The following year’s renewal saw the pocket rocket Lyric Fantasy, a 12,500 guineas Doncaster yearling, take first prize after winning the Group Three Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot on her previous start.

Lyric Fantasy was the first of six Richard Hannon-trained winners. Risky followed Lyric Fantasy’s lead in 1993 when also adding the contest to her Queen Mary Stakes triumph, while Miss Stamper (1996), Presto Vento (2002), If Paradise (2003) and Lady Livius (2005) complete the Hannon sextet.

Hannon has 10 juveniles still on target for the Weatherbys Super Sprint headed by the smart filly Cake (8st 2lb), who was only beaten a length and a quarter when fifth in the Group Two Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Hannon also has Baronovici (8st 9lb) who caught the eye when a close second on his sole start at Windsor on June 11, Haydock maiden winner Little Big Boy (8st 7lb), Don’t Tell Anna (8st 8lb), Farthermost (8st 4lb), Penrice Castle (8st), Ronsai (7st 13lb), the useful Cracking (9st 2lb), Reel Gift (8st 11lb) and Tina’s Best (8st 6lb).

Bryan Smart saddled Don Puccini to victory in 1999 and this year he could rely on 14,000 guineas buy Guertino (8st 7lb). The Choisir colt landed a six-furlong Carlisle maiden auction in good style on June 18.

Rod Millman is another trainer who knows what it takes to capture the Weatherbys Super Sprint, having taken the prize with Lord Kintyre in 1997. The Devon handler has the speedy Chester five-furlong maiden winner Brassini (8st 8lb).

Neville Callaghan could run Red Alert Day (9st 3lb) who was third to subsequent Group Two Coventry Stakes third Luck Money on his only outing to date at Newmarket in May, while the Dean Ivory-trained Ellemujie (8st 6lb) won nicely over six furlongs at Kempton on June 13.

The John Jenkins-trained Spitfire (8st 9lb) made a good impression when winning both his starts, at Warwick and Yarmouth in May, easily defeating the Clive Brittain-trained Group Two Norfolk Stakes ninth Jebel Tara (8st 9lb) on the latter occasion.

Brittain also has Mansii (8st 11lb) and the unraced Never Lose (7st 12lb), while his northern-based namesake Mel Brittain has Straight (8st 5lb).

Victorian Bounty (8st 5lb) followed a debut fourth to Drawnfromthepast with victory over five furlongs at Musselburgh on June 9. The colt’s trainer Eoghan O’Neill also has the unraced 4,000 guineas Doncaster buy Only A Game (8st 3lb)

North Yorkshire trainer Kevin Ryan is well represented with five horses remaining. Mazzanti (8st 12lb) won a Musselburgh maiden on June 25, while Rievaulx Valentino (8st 10lb), Kamal (9st 1lb), Smileforawhile (9st) and Eastern Romance (8st 8lb) complete the trainer’s complement.

Dubai Dynamo (8st 4lb) was no match for Henrythenavigator in the Group Two Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot but had previously won a Goodwood maiden and is one of two Stan Moore-trained horses remaining, the other being Group Three Albany Stakes also-ran Miss Versatile (7st 13lb).

Whitsbury trainer Ralph Beckett has the once-raced Lingfield maiden winner Swallow Star (8st 1lb) alongside Maddy (7st 11lb) who was fifth on her sole start at the same course.

The Mark Johnston-trained Gin Genereux (8st 9lb) broke his duck at Hamilton on June 20, Thunder Bay (8st 6lb) and Maiden Miss (8st 2lb) could represent trainer Mick Channon, and the David Barron-trained Charlotti Carlotti (8st 5lb) won well at Ayr on June 22.

The remaining Irish entry is the Kevin Prendergast-trained Rose Rouge (8st 5lb) who was fourth on her only start at Naas on June 27.

The confirmation stage for the Weatherbys Super Sprint is noon on Monday, July 16, 2007.

SIERRA VISTA HEADS BLUE SQUARE.COM STEWARDS’ CUP WEIGHTS

Classy mare Sierra Vista, who captured the Group Two Temple Stakes at Sandown in May, has been allotted top-weight of 9st 10lb in the £100,000 Blue Square.com Stewards’ Cup, the great handicap run over six furlongs on Saturday, August 4, the final day of Glorious Goodwood 2007.

The David Barker-trained seven-year-old, rated a 25/1 chance with the sponsors, was last seen finishing a creditable fifth behind Confuchias in the Group Three Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle on June 30, two places behind Fonthill Road (9st 4lb), runner-up in the 2005 Blue Square.com Stewards’ Cup, and who is quoted at 20/1 with Blue Square to go one place better this year.

Dark Missile (9st 1lb), who gave apprentice jockey William Buick the biggest win of his fledgling career in the Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot on June 23, is the 10/1 co-favourite with Blue Square to follow up at Goodwood.

The Andrew Balding-trained filly heads the market with the sponsors along with Something (9st 4lb) and Zidane (9st), fourth and seventh at Royal Ascot, who are 3lb and 5lb better off respectively with Dark Missile for being beaten two and a quarter lengths and three and a half lengths.

Intrepid Jack (9st 4lb), runner-up in the Wokingham Handicap, is 1lb better off with the winner for a neck defeat. The Hughie Morrison-trained five-year-old is 12/1 to reverse the placings in the Blue Square.com Stewards’ Cup.

The much travelled Protector (9st 3lb), now in the care of Gay Kelleway, finished a good eighth in the Wokingham Handicap on his British debut before romping home by five lengths in the Northern Sprint Handicap at Newcastle on June 30. Blue Square make him a 16/1 chance to land the spoils.

Wetherby-based handler Robin Bastiman enjoyed his finest moment in racing when Borderlescott (9st 8lb) triumphed in last year’s Blue Square.com Stewards’ Cup carrying 3lb less, getting the better of the Kevin Ryan-trained Mutamared (9st 1lb) by a neck. He is 14/1 to become the first dual winner since Sky Diver (1967 &1968).

The David Nicholls-trained Gift Horse (20/1) landed the 2005 Blue Square.com Stewards’ Cup carrying 9st 7lb and has been allotted 8st 11lb this year, having failed to get back in the winner’s enclosure since that success.

James Fanshawe’s trio of hopefuls also includes Firenze (9st 5lb, 16/1), beaten just half a length when third behind Borderlescott in last year’s renewal.

Irish entry That’s Hot (9st 2lb), trained by Ger Lyons, who has done well with his British raiders this season, finished runner-up in the Group Three Ballyogan Stakes at Leopardstown on June 6. He is available at 25/1 to provide the Emerald Isle with a first Blue Square.com Stewards’ Cup success since the Dermot Weld-trained Red Alert triumphed in 1974.

Machinist (8st 8lb), another contender from the David Nicholls stable, landed a valuable handicap over an extended six furlongs at the Curragh on July 1 and is a 14/1 chance to provide his trainer with a third success in the race, following Tayseer (2000) and Gift Horse (2005). Nicholls also landed the contest as a jockey aboard Soba in 1982.

The Karl Burke-trained Aahayson (9st 1lb) looks an improving three-year-old judged by his success against older rivals in the totesport Handicap at Windsor on June 30, and can be backed at 20/1 with the sponsors.

Lipocco (8st 10lb, 25/1), trained by Ralph Beckett, was touched off over six furlongs at Newmarket on May 26 having scored readily on his reappearance at Salisbury earlier that month and looks a progressive type, while Longquan (8st 7lb, 20/1) made an impressive return this year when an easy three-length victor at Newmarket on May 18. His trainer Peter Makin sent out Pivotal Point to collect in 2004.

Kate Miller, of sponsors Blue Square, said: “The Blue Square.com Stewards’ Cup is always a tremendously exciting spectacle as well as being one of the hottest betting heats of the season, and we are delighted with the quality and size of this year’s entry.

“With Blue Square offering each-way betting down to fifth place, punters will be able to get even more value this year, and we look forward to a fantastic contest at Glorious Goodwood on Saturday, August 4.”

The maximum field is 28.
