GLORIOUS GOODWOOD 2007
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
FIRST DAY, TUESDAY, JULY 31

BUCKLEY DELIGHTED WITH GROUND

Goodwood’s Clerk of the Course Seamus Buckley expressed his delight at the ground on day one of Glorious Goodwood 2007.

Buckely said: “I’m delighted with the way the course has ridden and the jockeys have given it nothing but praise.

“The ground has just been riding on the slower side of good and that is what the times are indicating.

“I think the moisture will be retained in the ground overnight, meaning that the ground will be good again tomorrow.

“I would say that by Friday at the earliest it could go good to firm.

“We are not planning to water at present. We prefer to keep things natural.

“We will remove the temporary rail for the last three furlongs (from the three-furlong marker to the winning post) of the round course after racing tomorrow, giving fresh ground up the straight on Thursday.”

CROWD

The attendance on day one of Glorious Goodwood was 14,291, an increase of 513 (4%) on the same day 12 months ago.

Rod Fabricius, Goodwood’s managing director, said: “It’s a good start to the week and racegoers will have enjoyed the almost unseasonal weather. The racing was very competitive and we were delighted with the large fields - cumulatively there were 16 more runners than last year.

“Advanced ticket sales are up on last year and we hope to build on this pleasing start to the week.”

TOTE UP

Today’s tote on-course cash turnover was £456,812, up 2.2% on the 2006 figure of £447,011.

FIRST DAY, TUESDAY, JULY 31

SUPERB OCTET FOR BGC SUSSEX STAKES
A superb field of eight goes to post for one of the highlights of Glorious Goodwood, the £300,000 Group One BGC Sussex Stakes, which takes place at 3.30pm tomorrow, Wednesday, August 1.

Godolphin has won the BGC Sussex Stakes twice before with Aljabr (1999) and Noverre (2001). This year the Maktoum family’s operation is represented by Ramonti, a game winner on his latest appearance in the Group One Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 19. Last season Ramonti was trained in Italy, where he was successful in Group One company at San Siro.

Jeremy was beaten a short-head into second behind Ramonti at Royal Ascot and the Sir Michael Stoute-trained four-year-old reopposes tomorrow. Jeremy is still seeking his first success at Group One level, but won the Group Two Betfred Mile at Sandown on his seasonal reappearance. Sir Michael Stoute has trained the winner of the BGC Sussex Stakes on no less than three occasions with Among Men (1998), Zilzal (1989) and Sonic Lady (1986).

Aidan O’Brien is triple-handed with Archipenko, Excellent Art and Trinity College. Excellent Art comes into the race on the back of a victory in the Group One St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 19 and is favourite for the BGC Sussex Stakes while Archipenko is on something of a recovery mission, having disappointed on his last two starts in the Vodafone Derby at Epsom Downs and the Coral Eclipse at Sandown. Trinity College is the outsider of the trio, having only won twice in 10 starts and never in Group company. Aidan O’Brien has enjoyed two Sussex Stakes victories with Rock Of Gibraltar (2002) and Giant’s Causeway (2000).

The most fascinating runner is South African challenger Asiatic Boy. Trained by Mike de Kock, Asiatic Boy has been stabled in Newmarket. The four-year-old begun his career in Argentina, where he was placed in Group One company. However, he proved a revelation in Dubai during the winter, when he was successful four times from four starts on dirt. After winning a conditions race, he took the Group Three UAE 2000 Guineas by four and a half lengths from Traffic Guard. He then collected a valuable conditions race by seven lengths before contesting the Group Two UAE Derby over nine furlongs on March 31. In the UAE Derby, he was sensational in defeating Jack Junior by nine and a half lengths.

The other two runners tomorrow are Decado and Munaddam. Decado, trained in Ireland by Kevin Prendergast, can boast some good form to his name as when third behind Araafa and George Washington in the 2006 Irish 2,000 Guineas. He disappointed subsequently, but showed he could be on the way back with a decisive victory in a Group Three event at the Curragh on July 15. Munaddam was twice successful in valuable handicaps at Nad Al Sheba over the winter but will need to improve siginificantly on his most recent efforts to figure tomorrow.

RECORD 15 GO FOR ABN AMRO GOODWOOD CUP

Geordieland ran a blinder on his first start for owner Martin Myers and trainer Jamie Osborne in last year’s ABN Amro Goodwood Cup and he heads a joint-record field of 15 set to face the starter in Thursday’s Group Two event.

There were also 15 runners last year and in 1994 in the two-mile contest, first run in 1812.

The six-year-old, a 16/1 chance when five lengths behind Yeats 12 months ago, is likely to be a much warmer odds this time around after finishing second in both the Ascot and Yorkshire Cups this year.

Stablemate Baizically, also owned by Myers’ Mountgrange Stud, steps up from handicap company.

The 2005 ABN Amro Goodwood Cup winner Distinction, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, returns after a lay-off of more than a year, having not run since finishing third to Yeats in the 2006 Gold Cup at Ascot.

Stablemate Allegretto has already enjoyed a big-race success this year, in the Group Two Henry II Stakes at Sandown, while the David Elsworth-trained Balkan Knight is better than ever at the age of seven, having won Listed events at Musselburgh and Sandown on his last two starts.

Locally-based Amanda Perrett launches a double-pronged attack on the famous event with last year’s third Tungsten Strike and Bulwark, who continues to run consistently in Group company and bids to win for a first time at that level.

The furthest traveller is Falpiase, who travels south from Howard Johnson’s yard at Crook in Co Durham. The five-year-old, who was bought out of Luca Cumani’s stable for 65,000 guineas in October, finished third in two starts over hurdles for Johnson and has been runner-up in two Flat handicaps since.

North Yorkshire-based Richard Fahey is another trainer sending a long-distance raiding team to Goodwood and his two representatives are totesport Chester Cup winner Greenwich Meantime and Land ‘N Stars, who finished a good fifth in the Melbourne Cup last year when trained by Jamie Poulton.

The Marcus Tregoning-trained Rayhani was a four-length winner of a Newmarket handicap last time out and is one of the less exposed runners in the field as is the sole three-year-old on show, the Michael Jarvis-trained Veracity, who finished runner-up to Mahler in the Group Three Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot on his latest start.

The Mick Channon-trained Baddam, winner of both the Ascot Stakes and Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot last year, went on to finish fifth in the 2006 ABN Amro Goodwood Cup.

Finalmente, who belied odds of 66/1 to finish an excellent fourth in the Group One Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, and the consistent Foxhaven, star of Patrick Chamings’ stable, complete the field.

When the stalls are positioned "low", stall one is placed adjacent to the stands’ rail. When they are placed "high", the highest-numbered stall is placed directly next to the rail on the other side of the course. Because of the large number of runners in the Blue Square Stewards’ Cup, the horses are spread across virtually the whole course.

There is a draw ceremony in the Bentinck Conservatory at the back of the March Grandstand at Goodwood on Thursday morning (11.30am for 12 noon) when connections can choose their own stall position for Saturday’s race. There is a safety limit of 28 in the Blue Square Stewards’ Cup.

Partnered by Darryll Holland, the winner was last entering the straight but produced a devastating late run inside the final furlong to overhaul Lake Poet by three-quarters of a length.

The winner is owned by tennis fan John Livock. Comedian Jimmy Tarbuck, who has recently bought a share in Championship Point, was also on hand in the winner’s enclosure to greet Championship Point.

Winning trainer Mick Channon said: “He did it nicely today. We are lucky to have got Championship Point back to his best.

“It is all down to Ted Durcan that we have got this horse back. He really looked after him in the Derby last year.

“We were thinking of stepping him back up to Listed or Group class after he won at Royal Ascot (Wolferton Handicap) last time, but decided on another handicap. I think we will probably have to look at stepping him up again in class again now.

“Championship Point is a quality horse. He had good form at two and won the Predominate Stakes well here as a three-year-old. His three-year-old career didn’t go to plan after that, but as I say, all credit must go to Ted Durcan for looking after him in the Derby - he came back a cipple after Epsom.

i
“I was a bit worried when he was last entering the straight. Fortunately, Darryll (Holland) wasn’t!

“It is fun to keep horses like this in training. I think we need good horses like this to keep running.”

Winning rider Darryll Holland added: "He's a very good horse on his day, he just lost his way a little bit, but he's been brought back very well and he won at Ascot last time. He's a Royal Ascot winner this horse and people seem to forget that. He was very brave with that weight.

"The pace was very generous early. We employed the same tactics we did at Ascot. The only thing I was worried about was the ground - whether he could do it off that ground, because it was a bit of a slog at Ascot. He's a lovely, genuine horse."

Referring to owner John Livock, he said: "He's a very colourful character and great to have in the yard so it's fantastic for everybody."

POET HEADS TO EBOR

The Clive Brittain-trained Lake Poet is firmly on target for the totesport Ebor at York on August 22 after going down by three-quarters of a length to Championship Point in the opening Bank Of Scotland Investment Services Handicap.

The four-year-old is set carry 9 stone at York, for which he is 20/1 from 33/1 with Paddy Power, and Bruce Raymond, racing manager to owner Mohammed Rashid, reported: “Clive has already booked the jockey (Seb Sanders) for the Ebor.

“I think Lake Poet has improved a bit for his Ascot run to get closer to the winner and he’s run a very honest race. He’s a very consistent horse.”

SANDERS SUSPENDED

Jockey Seb Sanders was found guilty of careless riding following his ride on Lake Poet in the opening Bank of Scotland Investment Handicap. The stewards held that he had caused interference by allowing his mount to drift towards the rail without correction. Sanders was suspended for two days (Saturday, August 11 and Sunday, August 12).

GROUND

Jockeys riding in the first race felt the ground was either good or slightly softer.

Joe Fanning, Jimmy Fortune, Richard Quinn and Steve Drowne all said “it’s on the slow side” while Royston ffrench and Kerrin McEvoy called it “good”. Philip Robinson described the racing surface as “lovely ground”.

SECOND RACE WIN QUOTES
GORDON STAKES (GROUP 3)

YELLOW TAKES GORDON

The consistent Yellowstone landed a well-deserved big-race success when holding off his fellow 5/2 joint-favourite Aqaalem to take the Group 3 Gordon Stakes.

“He was well backed,” said winning owner Michael Tabor with a smile. “I thought he had a very good chance and his form was there for all to see. It looked a messy race because they went a bit slow and Johnny (Murtagh) said he’d like the ground a bit faster.

“I’m very pleased because the horse has been on the go all season. He’s a very decent horse who has been racing against the best and kept his form all year. Johnny is riding with such confidence that it’s a pleasure to see.”

The winner was cut in price for the Ladbrokes St Leger but looks unlikely to step up in the trip for the classic. “From what Johnny said I don’t think he’ll be a Leger horse, he said ideally he’d want a mile and a quarter or a mile and a half with a bit less juice in the ground,” added Tabor.

Murtagh added: “I knew they’d quicken three down so I wanted to get him ready and I was always going to win. He idled a bit but I felt he was holding Richard (Hills on Aqaalem) when he came to him.

“My lad’s gone and got his head down to the line and I’d say he’s a mile and a quarter or mile and a half horse.

“He’s a lovely good mover who will appreciate better ground. The track is in fantastic condition and it’s on the slow side of good at the moment although I’m sure it will dry out during the week.”

Tabor is looking forward to Excellent Art, in whom he has a part-share, in tomorrow’s BGC Sussex Stakes. “It’s a tough race to win but we’re very hopeful and he’s working well. Put it this way I’m not going home tonight!”

Race 2 - Gordon Stakes - Placed Quotes

TREGONING STILL HAPPY, GOSDEN BEMOANS LACK OF PACE

Trainer Marcus Tregoning was not too downbeat after Aqaleem went down by a neck in the Group Three Gordon Stakes after failing to secure a clear passage.

He said: “We are still smiling.

“There was a lack of pace and it’s just a bit unfortunate.

“I don’t want to take anything away from the winner but I think we should have won with a better run. These things happen. The winner just had a better run than us.

“We will just wait and see what we do next with him.

“I will have to talk it over with his owner (Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum) but I would be tempted to go straight to Doncaster with him now.

“He’s quite a light-framed horse and we don’t want to over-race him this year.”

Sponsors Ladbrokes have cut Aqaleem to 4/1 (from 9/2) for the Ladbrokes St Leger Stakes at Doncaster on September 15. He shares favouritism with the Magic Sign with Mahler and Soldier Of Fortune.

Aqaleem is also 4/1 for the final classic with Cashmans, Paddy Power, Victor Chandler, totesport, Stan James and William Hill, 9/2 with Blue Square and 7/2 with bet365.

A further three-quarters of a length back in third was Raincoat and his trainer John Gosden bemoaned the lack of pace.

He said: “It was a walking race.

“We have run four furlongs, but we came here to run a mile and a half - that’s life.

“I am pleased with what he has done today.”

POSSIBLE LADBROKES ST LEGER CLUES IN GORDON STAKES?

Today’s Group Three Gordon Stakes (2.50pm) could provide valuable clues for the final classic of the season, the Group One Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster on September 15. Last year Sixties Icon won at Goodwood before going on to St Leger success while other horses to have completed the double in modern times are Millenary (2000), Nedawi (1998), Minster Son (1988), Commanche Run (1984) and Athens Wood (1971).

Of today’s nine runners (Hearthstead Maison is now a non-runner), five also hold entries in the Doncaster contest. These are headed by Vodafone Derby third Aqaleem, trained by Goodwood specialist Marcus Tregonoing, who begun this season with a victory in the Lingfield Derby Trial before his fine effort at Epsom Downs on June 2.

Heron Bay makes his first start in Pattern race company today for Newmarket trainer Geoff Wragg, but showed plenty of determination to collect the competitive King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot on June 21. He could well be open to further improvement.

Lion Sands finished fourth behind Boscobel in the Group Two King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, beaten four lengths. Like Commanche Run, he is trained by Luca Cumani and had Heron Bay back in third when winning at Haydock and looks to be another improving type.

The John Gosden-trained Raincoat will be attempting 12 furlongs for the first time today. After winning the Blue Riband Trial at Epsom on April 25, he found Authorized four lengths too strong in the Dante Stakes at York. His latest appearance was in the French Derby at Chantilly on June, when he finished a never-dangerous eleventh behind Lawman.

Yellowstone is the Ballydoyle representative in the Gordon Stakes. Although his only success came in a Cork maiden in July, 2006, he has shown some high-class form subsequently including finishing fourth behind Notnowcato in the Coral Eclipse at Sandown last time out.

Although none of Mores Wells, Big Robert, Champery or Tranquil Tiger are currently entered in the Ladbrokes St Leger, if they win impressively today they could be added to the field at the supplementary entry stage on September 10 at a cost of £40,000.

Race 3 - Betfair Cup - Winning Quotes

TARIQ SHOWS TREMENDOUS TURN OF FOOT TO LAND BETFAIR CUP

Tariq showed a tremendous turn of foot to lift the highlight of day one of Glorious Goodwood 2007, the £150,000 Group Two Betfair Cup over seven furlongs.

Dunelight looked to have stolen the race from the front but the Kerrin McEvoy-ridden winner came with a great run to win by a length and a quarter from Asset.

Winning trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam said: “I was quite confident coming into the race and my main worry was whether he would handle the track.

“He has now won two Group Two races over seven furlongs (Tariq earlier won the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot) and he could now go anywhere between six furlongs and a mile. The race I’d love to go for is the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Group One, a mile, Ascot, September 29).

“Wherever he goes next, it will be in Group One company.

“He just didn’t really come to himself before he won at Newmarket this year but he has now shown what he is capable of.”

Chapple-Hyam also had new of Derby winner Authorized: “He worked for the first time since the Eclipse this morning with River Alhaarth. He was a bit fresh, as you would expect after a break, and I am looking forward to running him at York in the Juddmonte International.

“There is still a lot of the season to go, although I don’t think I can be champion trainer now. We’ve had a few near misses which have cost us.”

Kerrin McEvoy added: "Peter wanted me to peg him back and switch him off. It's probably lucky that we missed the break slightly. We got back in behind and saved his energy for that kick. It's the first time I've ridden him but he picked up really well.

"Initially, two out, I thought hang on is he going to pick up', but once I'd given him a reminder off he went and he did it easily.

"They went a nice pace early and luckily my lad travelled really well. He travelled like the winner the whole way.

"He was a little bit keen in stages but if he did settle on the bridle then a mile wouldn't be out of the question."

THIRD RACE PLACED QUOTES
BETFAIR CUP (GROUP 2)

ASSET “BEATEN BY BETTER HORSE”

Harry Herbert, managing director of Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, offered no excuses after their Cricket Ground syndicate’s Asset, the 5/2 favourite, finished second to Tariq in the Group 2 Betfair Cup.

“We were beaten by a better horse, pure and simple,” said Herbert. “He was perhaps slightly hitting a flat spot at times and may need freshening up or even blinkers - we’ll leave that to Richard (Hannon) to decide. He’s also a very good horse fresh.

“We’ll have a good look at (the Betfred Sprint Cup) Haydock and be careful with ground about where we run next. If it’s fast ground there then that’s probably his race.”

Clive Cox, trainer of third-placed Dunelight, added: “I’ve got a job to be able to talk because I thought he’d won at one stage. Another couple of days of drying weather would have just helped but I can’t knock the condition of the track.

“The ground is the key to him and the Celebration Mile back here would be an option.”

FOURTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
BETFAIR MOLECOMB STAKES (GROUP 3)

SPIRIT PROVIDES MORE THAN FLEETING FLAT INTEREST FOR STEWART

Leading jump owner Andy Stewart enjoyed a high-profile Flat success when the Jeremy Noseda-trained Fleeting Spirit maintained her unbeaten record to land the Betfair Molecomb Stakes by a neck from Kingsgate Native.

“This filly sadly got an infection a week before Ascot so couldn’t run there - we had been planning to go for the Windsor Castle,” said Noseda. “Then we thought about races at Sandown and Chester but the ground went against her so we waited for the Molecomb and I’m delighted we came here.

“It’s a good performance for the second race of her life and the Flying Childer’s probably the only race she can go for and so we might be forced to give her a try over six furlongs.”

Stewart is part of The Searchers, a four-strong ownership syndicate also including British Horseracing Authority chairman Paul Roy, Trevor Harris and Martin Myers.

“We’ve got four horses, three from the breeze-ups and one that John Warren bought as a yearling. Lemon N Sugar runs here in a maiden on Thursday and Strike The Deal is going for the Richmond Stakes on Friday. I’ll be here for the two races but I’m going to Galway tomorrow to watch Hoo La Baloo in the Galway Plate,” said Stewart.

“I’m enjoying this Flat racing and have been all over the place to Maisons-Laffitte, Royal Ascot, Lingfield and Nottingham.

“When Paul (Roy) had his 60th birthday he had Lionel Richie playing and The Searchers. That’s how the syndicate got its name and Paul went to university in Liverpool, where they are from.”

PRINCE AND GERRARD PLEASE CONNECTIONS

Connections of Kingsgate Prince and Captain Gerrard were both pleased after the £50,000 Betfair Molecomb Stakes.x

Kingsgate Prince looked to have the race in the bag before being overhauled by Fleeting Spirit to go down by a neck in second place. This was only the second run of the Mujadil colt’s career after he had previously finished runner-up in the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Trainer John Best said: “He has run a stormer, it’s just a bit frustrating.

“I thought we were home and hosed half a furlong out, but I think we might have come up against a good one.

“He is still in the Gimcrack, but I think we will be looking more at the Flying Childers and Cornwallis Stakes with him.

“He is a good horse and should also stay six furlongs, as he relaxes so well.

“He only cost 20,000 guineas so I suppose I could still run him in a maiden auction race somewhere!”

A further two and a half lengths back in third was Captain Gerrard and his owner Reg Bond said: “That was a nice run, very pleasing.

“The ground has probably just dried up a bit too much for him and he has hung away from the rails towards the other horses, as two-year-olds can do. This let the winner through.

“This horse is very professional. He could run again on Saturday if there was a suitable race, he’s that sort of horse. I really couldn’t see us being out of the first three today.

“I will leave it to Bryan where we go next, although I would think the Flying Childers would be an option.

“There is a big race in this horse.”

Race 5 - Detica Summer Handicap - Winning Quotes

McEVOY WRITES PERFECT SCRIPT

Scriptwriter benefited from an excellent Kerrin McEvoy ride to lift the Detica Summer Handicap for Godolphin.

The five-year-old, a 7/1 chance who shouldered 10st to victory, came with a superbly timed run to take up the running just over a furlong from home before quickening well to score by two and a half lengths from Samurai Way.

Winning trainer Saeed bin Suroor said: “The ground and the distance made a big difference to him today. He was also much more relaxed.

“Scriptwriter has improved with every race and could go further I think.

“We will see how the horse is before we make any plans. He is entered in two of the Shergar Cup races at Ascot and also the Ebor at York.

“When I spoke to Kerrin afterwards, he said that this horse could go for the Melbourne Cup. He has speed and also stays well. I hope he stays sound.”

Bookmakers rate Scriptwriter at 9/2 (Paddy Power), 7/1 (William Hill, Ladbrokes), 8/1 (Stan James, totesport), 10/1 (bet365) and 12/1 (Betfred) for the totesport Ebor. Scriptwriter is due to carry 9st 4lb (including a 4lb penalty) at York.

Looking ahead to tomorrow’s BGC Sussex Stakes, Saeed bin Suroor added: “Ramonti has been training well.

“He has come out of Royal Ascot well and is tough and classy.

“It will be a tough race, but I’m looking forward to it.

“We also run Rio De La Plata in the Vintage Stakes. I like him a lot.

“He will improve for his run at Newmarket and this is chance to prove himself.”

SIXTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
TATLER SUMMER SEASON EBF MAIDEN

SHALLAL IMPRESSES WITH MAIDEN WIN

Peter Chapple-Hyam completed a 21.5/1 double when Shallal ran out a smooth winner of the Tatler Summer Season EBF Maiden.

The winner was home-bred by Dubai businessman Zaid Galadari, who was represented by his racing manager Andrew Sime.

“Peter has had to pop home but he hopes this might be a Listed horse,” said Sime. “Jimmy (Fortune) was delighted with the horse today and I’ll speak to Peter and the owner but we’ll probably go for a Listed contest next. By the end of the year he’ll probably be going over seven furlongs but there’s no rush to step him up in trip at the moment.”

Galadari has half a dozen horses in Britain with Chaple-Hyam and William Jarvis as well as a large string in Dubai.

Richard Hannon, trainer of second-placed Eastern Gift, said: “He ran well but it was the draw that beat him.”

Race 7 - TurfTv Handicap - Winning Quotes

FREMEN LANDS THE LAST

The final race on day one of Glorious Goodwood 2007, the TurfTv Handicap over a mile, saw Goodwood specialist Dandy Nicholls train Freman to victory in the hands of his son Adrain.

The 12/1 chance came from an unpromising position to overhaul longtime leader Kasumi well inside the final furlong, eventually recording a comfortable length success.

Dandy Nicholls said: “He was drawn way out in stall seven so the plan was to jump off and just drop him in.

“We either needed luck and gaps to appear, or else we had to come on the outside, and that is what Adrian has done - I don’t think he has interfered with anyone.

“When we first had this horse we were running him in claimers - he looks better than that now doesn’t he?”

The stewards took a different view to Dandy Nicholls and banned Adrian Nicholls for three days (August 11, 12 and 13) for careless riding.

TURFTRAX BACK LEADING RIDER AWARD

TurfTrax, the specialist racing data company, sponsors the competition to decide the leading rider at the five-day Glorious Goodwood festival meeting, beginning on Tuesday, 31 July.

The competition will be run on a points basis - 50 for a winner, 35 for a second, 25 for a third and 10 for a fourth-placed horse.

For the first time this year, racegoers will be able to immediately identify the leading rider at any stage throughout the meeting thanks to a yellow armband which will be provided by the Salisbury-based company, which was also responsible for the introduction of the GoingStick.

The Horseracing Regulatory Authority and Goodwood have approved the use of a yellow armband, enabling racegoers to identify the leading rider. The armband will be passed from rider to rider as and when the lead changes prior to their arrival in the parade ring.

Armchair racegoers can call up the leader board and get a free trial of the TurfTrax Predictor and Form Guide on-line at www.turftrax.com/goodwood, using the promotion code Goodwood.

In addition to the presentation of a silver memento, TurfTrax will donate a cheque for the sum of £1,500 to the Injured Jockeys Fund in the name of the successful rider.

TurfTrax Managing Director, Mark Kent, said: “The leading rider award is an established feature of Glorious Goodwood, creating plenty of interest among racegoers as the week unfolds.

“It provides us with a platform to promote our on-line data services and products and, at the same time, enables us to make a substantial contribution to the Injured Jockeys Fund.”

In the event of a dead-heat for any of the placings in any of the 35 scheduled races, the points will be divided between the riders involved.

Should the competition be tied, the winner will be decided on a count back taking into consideration in the first instance the number of winners achieved, then second places and so on.

CHANNEL 4 AT GOODWOOD

The 2007 season marks the beginning of an exciting new partnership that brings Goodwood Racecourse together with Channel 4 as official terrestrial broadcaster.

Channel 4 first broadcast live from Goodwood at the opening meeting on Saturday, May 5, covering two races of the seven-race card.

Throughout the season, Channel 4 is covering 10 days and 32 races including all five days of Glorious Goodwood this week.

This exciting new relationship will provide more extensive coverage than in recent years and offers exclusive footage, in conjunction with Racing UK, of the racing action at Goodwood.

The Duke of Richmond, said: “We are delighted to welcome Channel 4 to Goodwood as our new terrestrial broadcaster. As you know we believe in long term relationships, this is only our second TV relationship in over two hundred years!

“We are very confident about the ability of Channel 4 to integrate Goodwood into its marvellous portfolio of racecourses with style, drama and sensitivity.

“We are thrilled that the Festival scheduling provides for a 2.15pm first race and an off air time of 4.30pm.”

Andrew Thompson, Channel 4’s Head of Sport, commented: “We’re thrilled to be adding Glorious Goodwood to our racing portfolio.

“It is one of the country’s great sporting festivals, and will be a wonderful summer highlight for all our Channel 4 Racing fans.

“We plan to broadcast well over 12 hours of live coverage during the week, as well as providing a comprehensive service online.

“And I’m delighted that Highflyer will be producing the coverage. They have the right mix of experience, quality and innovation to ensure that the Channel 4 coverage will feel fresh, dramatic and capture all that makes Goodwood feel so unique.”

GOING NEWS AT 10.00AM

After walking the course this morning, Seamus Buckley, the Goodwood clerk of the course, described the going as GOOD for day one of the five-day Glorious Goodwood Festival, with a GoingStick reading of 8.0.

He said: “We are delighted with the way the course has dried out and it is wonderful to be starting Glorious Goodwood 2007 on perfect racing ground.

“I predict the ground will ride just on the slower side of good today. The forecast is for the weather to remain settled well into this week.”

There is temporary rail on the far side of the course, dolled out to a width of six metres, from the six-furlong pole to the winning post on the round course. There is also two furlongs of temporary rail on the top bend, dolled out three metres wide.

Buckley added: “We will remove the temporary rail for the last three furlongs (from the three-furlong marker to the winning post) of the round course on Wednesday evening, giving fresh ground up the straight on Thursday.

“The other three furlongs of the temporary rail on the round course will be taken down after racing on Thursday to give fresh ground on the lower bend for Friday.

“The temporary rail on the top bend will be removed at the end of racing on Friday to give fresh ground for the Blue Square Nassau Stakes on Saturday.”
