RITZ CLUB JULY FESTIVAL 2007 - NEWMARKET
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
LANSON LADIES’ DAY, THURSDAY, JULY 12
RECORD CROWD AS 15,000-MARK BROKEN
Today’s attendance came to 15,102 - a record for the Ritz Club July Festival - and it was four per cent up on the 14,512 seen on the equivalent day last year.
Lisa Hancock, managing director of Newmarket Racecourses, said: “We have had a record July Festival crowd for Lanson Ladies’ Day. There has been a great atmosphere and, with the Premier Enclosure at capacity, the new facilities have really come into their own.
“The racing has been top class and it has been a great day for Newmarket with local trainers winning the Group and Listed races.”
PROSSER DELIGHTED AT SECOND DAY ACTION
Newmarket’s director of racing Michael Prosser was thrilled after Lanson Ladies’ Day produced some spectacular racing and a record crowd.
Prosser was particularly impressed by Winker Watson’s last-to-first triumph in the TNT July Stakes and also the combination of Ryan Moore and Papal Bull, successful in the Princess Of Wales’s WBX.COM Stakes.
He said: “It was an excellent day’s racing accompanied by a great atmosphere.
“Papal Bull was given a great ride by Ryan Moore, while in Winker Watson I think we have seen a very good horse.
“Now we can look forward to another outstanding day’s racing tomorrow on Darley July Cup day.
“There is a warm day forecast with the possibility of showers in the late morning and early afternoon. However, we should enjoy sunny spells in the afternoon. The temperature is expected to be around 21 degrees.
“Having spoken to the jockeys today, they are reporting lovely fast ground – good to firm is a fair assessment. I can’t see it changing unless we get one of these localised showers.”
MAXIMUM FIELD FOR CRACKING DARLEY JULY CUP
Tomorrow’s £375,000 Darley July Cup, the richest sprint in Europe, promises to be a truly enthralling spectacle with a maximum field of 20 set to go to post. In a truly international line-up for the Group One contest over six furlongs, there are runners trained in Australia, Germany, France and South Africa, as well as Britain and Ireland.
The Australian challenger is Bentley Biscuit, trained by Gai Waterhouse. A dual Group One winner in his native country, he failed to shine in the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot although connections are confident that he can put that run well behind him.
South African trainer Mike De Kock, who sent out Irridescence to finish second in Tuesday’s Group One UAE Hydra Properties Falmouth Stakes, runs Drayton. Well beaten in the Stan James 2000 Guineas, he put up a much better effort last time out when fifth in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. Germany is represented by Electric Beat, successful in Group Three company at Hamburg in 2006 while the French contender is the Freddy Head-trained Marchand D’Or, who scored a comfortable success in a Group Three event over seven furlongs at Longchamp last month.
Hughie Morrison, who trained Pastoral Pursuits to victory two years ago, saddles the likely favourite in Sakhee’s Secret. The lightly-raced three-year-old showed himself to be a sprinter of immense promise when registering a hugely-impressive four-length victory in the Listed Cathedral Stakes at Salisbury on June 17.
Jeremy Noseda saddled Soldier’s Tale to an emotional victory in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot last month, although the Newmarket handler warned yesterday that the horse will not run in the Darley July Cup unless the rain arrives. Noseda has also declared last year’s Cherry Hinton Stakes heroine Sander Camillo.
A horse dropping back to sprint distances is Dutch Art, trained by Peter Chapple-Hyam. A Group One winner last season with victories in the Prix Morny at Deauville and the Shadwell Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket, the colt has finished third to Cockney Rebel in the Stan James 2000 Guineas and fourth to Excellent Art in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, both over a mile, this season.
The Irish challenger is the Tracey Collins-trained Dandy Man. He chased home Australian superstar Miss Andretti in the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot from a poor draw and won the Group Three Stan James Palace House Stakes at Newmarket last season. The one negative against him is that four of his five wins have come over five furlongs.
Other interesting contenders include Amadeus Wolf, fourth to Les Arcs last season and successful in the Group Two Duke Of York Stakes earlier this season and Asset, who was staying on well when third to Soldier’s Tale in the Golden Jubilee Stakes and should appreciate the better ground tomorrow. The in-form Barry Hills team could run Golden Jubilee Stakes fourth Red Clubs and Prime Defender. Godolphin runs Bygone Days, a staying-on sixth in the Golden Jubilee Stakes last time out while two interesting northern-trained runners are Borderlescott, a top handicapper who has been holding his own in Group company this season and the David Barron-trained Rising Shadow.
NEWMARKET'S JULY FESTIVAL PRIZE MONEY
The Ritz Club July Festival, which has long been Newmarket's big summer racing event, was lagging behind badly in the prize money stakes at the start of this decade. Compared with Glorious Goodwood and York's Ebor Meeting, Britain's other two major summer racing festivals outside Royal Ascot, the three-day July Festival was a distant third. Average daily prize money over the five days of Glorious Goodwood in 2001 was £332,000, 50% more than Newmarket. With a daily average of £652,333, York's three-day Ebor meeting was nearly 200% more than Newmarket's midsummer showpiece.
That picture has changed dramatically over the last six years, however. With its prize money having more than doubled, the Ritz Club July Festival has now overtaken Goodwood and got to within a respectable distance of York.
The daily average at this year's July Festival is £456,666 (excluding the one-off transferral of the Lancashire Oaks), 12% ahead of Goodwood on £406,350. York is still 73% ahead of Newmarket, although the addition of a £300,000 sales race at the Ebor Meeting distorts the picture somewhat. Otherwise the gap would be closer.
"We have invested a great deal of money into the Ritz Club July Festival to put it where we feel it belongs," explained Lisa Hancock, Newmarket's Managing Director.
"When Michael Prosser (Director of Racing) and I had our first season here in 2001, there was a seller, races with small fields that simply weren't working, plenty of weak handicaps and an overall paucity of prize money. The meeting was still popular, but it was nothing like it should have been.
"Since then the majority of the races have been upgraded and this year's meeting is, I suspect, the best July Festival ever in terms of the quality and competitiveness of the racing.
"In 2001 there were 226 runners over the three days, while this year we are set to exceed 330 runners (excluding the Lancashire Oaks). We are really quite proud of what we have achieved."

Race 1 - Bahrain Trophy - Winning Quotes
BATTLING TIGER
Tranquil Tiger got favourite backers off to a flying start when the 11/4 shot battled to victory in the Listed Bahrain Trophy, for owner Khalid Abdulla, trainer Henry Cecil and jockey Richard Hughes.
The three-year-old Selkirk colt saw off all challengers in the mile and five furlong contest to score by three quarters of a length from Wing Express.
Cecil said: “I am very pleased. After he ran at Ascot, I thought he could win the Bahrain Trophy.
“He is an improving horse and will make up into a nice four-year-old.
“He’s had a tough race today but is very genuine. I thought we had a good chance today and it has worked out.
“I don’t have any immediate plans for him. He is in the Ebor. He is not bred to stay but does stay.”
Lord Grimthorpe, Racing Manager to owner Khalid Abdulla added: “Tranquil Tiger stays well and is a horse for the future.
“He is the sort of horse the Prince would want to keep in training.
“We will have a look at the Ebor for him.”
The winning rider Richard Hughes said: “He's a lovely big horse. He's needed plenty of time and Henry's given it to him, and he's come good.
“I was a bit worried going down with this fellow as the going felt a bit quick under him - it would be as he's such a big horse - and it is fast ground."

WING EXPRESS PLEASES MCEVOY
Jockey Kerrin McEvoy was happy with the performance of Wing Express, who was beaten three quarters of a length.
McEvoy said: “He ran a good race. That was only his third start and he kept lengthening and staying on. It was a good effort.”
John Dunlop, trainer of the third-placed Samuel, said: “I would think he is still improving. The trip suited him and we might think about the March Stakes at Goodwood.”
Michael Bell, trainer of the fourth-placed Spice Route, said: “We have learnt that he doesn’t stay this trip and so we know where we are going with him now.
“We’ll come back to a mile and a half or possibly a mile and a quarter.”
GROUND NEWS:
GOOD FAST GROUND FOR DAY TWO
The jockeys returned from the opening Bahrain Trophy to largely report a faster racing surface for Lanson Ladies’ Day.
Hugh Bowman, rider of Halicarnassus, reported the ground as “Good.”
Samuel’s jockey Eddie Ahern called the surface, ‘Lovely’.
Jamie Spencer, rider of Spice Route, stated that it was “Quick.”
Baba Ganouge’s jockey Kevin Darley said it was “Good fast ground.”
Galianna’s rider Mick Kinane felt the ground had “dried out since yesterday” and was “Good to firm”.
Martin Dwyer, on board Shimoni, added that it was ‘genuine fast ground’.

IT’S A WINKER HAT-TRICK – JUST!
Winker Watson defied a 3lb penalty and a low draw to land a thrilling renewal of the Group Two TNT July Stakes.
The unbeaten Piccolo colt, successful in the Norfolk Stakes last time out, came from last to first to nail River Proud on the line.
Stall one meant that Jimmy Fortune had to drop his mount in and he looked to have it all to do over two furlongs out. But Winker Watson relentlessly made up the ground to get up for a short-head triumph inside the shadow of the post.
Cashmans now have the hat-trick hero as short as 7-1 (from 16) for success in next year’s Stan James Guineas while the sponsors of the Newmqrket Claasic go 10-1 from 16-1. Coral weren’t quite so impressed, trimming him to 14s from 25-1.
Trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam said: “He is a good horse. I have said it for a while - now people might listen! Jimmy said, ‘The horse has got me out of trouble’.
“I was worried about the draw and we were so far back from that – the horse didn’t have a chance. But his class gets him through from a bad draw and everything going wrong. I’m delighted for everyone concerned – this is a proper result.
“We will probably give him a bit of a break and then go for the Darley Prix Morny (on August 19 at Deauville). The Winker and I on tour! The 2000 Guineas next year? This is a stiff six, so I see no reason why he would not stay a mile.”
The same colours were carried to victory two years ago when Captain Hurricane struck for Chapple-Hyam. With his tongue fixed firmly in his cheek, he added: “I think this one is slightly better than the last one!”
The Newmarket-based trainer also delivered an update on Derby winner Authorized, who finished second in last Saturday’s Coral Eclipse.
He said: “He has come out of his race alright and is cantering again now but a decision about the King George won’t be made until next week.”
The victorious rider said: "I didn't give this horse a very good ride. We wanted to track Ted Durcan on Swiss Frank, but the trouble is they all went to the far side, and I got myself a lot further back than I wanted to be.
"They all went right and I had to go with them, and I didn't want to set him alight either, but I knew I was too far back. The horse got me out of trouble today. He's a lovely horse and done nothing but progress."

COLE AND ELSWORTH HAPPY
Paul Cole was very satisfied with the performance of River Proud, who was overhauled close home by Winker Watson to go down by a short-head in the Group Two TNT July Stakes.
The Whatcombe handler commented: “River Proud has run a hell of a race.
“The winner is a real speed horse whereas our horse is not a natural two-year-old and has lots of scope. Six furlongs really is a minimum trip for him.
“I think he is a really good horse. I don’t know where he will go next. He will have a break now.”
Swiss Franc stayed on from off the pace to take third place, a further length and a half back.
His trainer David Elsworth said: “He had looked a bit dull in himself and although I could find nothing wrong with him, I was unsure whether to run him today - I think the old man must be losing his nerve!
“Although the ground was perfectly safe today, Ted (Durcan) thought the horse would have preferred to get his toe in a bit more.
“He saw the trip out well today and I think he was up against the very best company so I am very happy.
“I think there is a good afternoon to be enjoyed with this horse. He could go to the Prix Morny (Deauville, August 19, 6f) now - the ground should be more to his liking there.”
Trainer Mark Johnston was understandably pleased but also slightly puzzled after Hearthstead Maison defied top-weight to record a game length and a quarter victory under three pound claimer Greg Fairley.
The 25/1 winner saw off all challengers after establishing a clear advantage around quarter of a mile from home.
Mark Johnston said: “It’s easy to say that he wanted 10 furlongs and fast ground today but I’m slightly puzzled.
“He never travelled at all over two miles at Royal Ascot last time. Joe Fanning said after he rode him that day that the horse has never run well for him over any trip and has never given him a good feeling.
“We had several options this week. We decided on this race as Greg could claim in it and not any of the other races. I don’t like giving 3lb to the handicapper.
“On the bare form, it looks as if a mile and a quarter and fast ground is what he wants.
“We certainly won’t be running over two miles again in a hurry and I think I can scrap the Ebor entry I made yesterday for him!
“It’s just hard to explain today - it doesn’t all fit.”
Greg Fairley added: “He's done it incredibly well. We've drifted over a little bit towards the end, it was probably just tiredness, maybe I should have pulled my stick through but we were going forward at the same time, so it didn't really matter too much."
Mick Channon, trainer of the fast-finishing second Man Of Vision, said: “He has run his race. With a bit more luck in running, you never know.
“But I am pleased with him - he has got some ability. We will see how he comes out of this.”
Ryan Moore, rider of third-placed Ladies Best, said: “She has run well. She just wants slower ground, probably.”
RACE 4: THE PRINCESS OF WALES’S WBX.COM STAKES

PAPAL BULL RESTORES HIS REPUTATION
Papal Bull returned to winning ways when landing the Group Two Princess Of Wales’ WBX.COM Stakes.
The four-year-old Montjeu colt last tasted success in the 2006 renewal of the King Edward VII at Royal Ascot.
Before today his current campaign had been nothing to get excited about but he bounced back to top form with a superb display.
Under Ryan Moore, he galloped powerfully to a two and a half length triumph to land odds of 11-1.
Victorious trainer Sir Michael Stoute said: “He has been a very consistent horse and we were satisfied with his initial run in the Jockey Club Stakes (he was fourth) at Newmarket.
“But at Sandown (in the Brigadier Gerard) he didn’t jump well and was a bit sore behind when he came back. He had us guessing.
“He has been working very well in the lead-up to the race. Last year he had form as good as any of the three-year-olds – there was his King Edward form and he got no run in the Derby.
“The team have done a really good job with him. I’m thrilled that he has come back to near his best form. A stronger gallop helps him. I was delighted to see him picking up and really starting to run as he was going by horses.”
Sir Michael didn’t outline a next target for the horse owned by Sue Magnier, Derrick Smith and Michael Tabor.
“Coolmore have so many of these middle-distance horses and we’ve got Mountain High as well. I will have to discuss things with them.”
The winning jockey said: "They went pretty quick. He was never travelling that well but he started picking horses off at halfway, and he started enjoying it then - he took me into the race beautifully. I got there a bit too soon, and when he has got there he's decided he's done enough and wanted to go right-handed.
"He's a very talented horse, and when things fall his way he's right up there with the best of them, but he needs a strongly run race."
“He hasn’t had his conditions for a while - a strongly run mile and a half and quickish ground. Everything dropped right for him today. He has got a big engine, it’s just getting it out of him. He is definitely up to Group One level.”

DEAD-HEAT FOR SECOND
There was a dead-heat for second place in the Group Two Princess of Wales’s WBX.COM Stakes between Godolphin’s Laverock who stayed on well in the closing stages and the Marcus Tregoning-trained Shahin, who led entering the final furlong. The duo finished two and a half lengths behind the winner Papal Bull.
Simon Crisford, racing manager for Godolphin, said: “Laverock ran an honest race and we are very pleased.
“He has just taken a while to come right and needed time after he ran at the Dubai Carnival over the winter.
“There are no plans for him at the moment. Anywhere between 10 and 12 furlongs should suit him.”
Paddy Power rate Laverock a 25/1 chance (from 33/1) for the King VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot on July 27.
Trainer Marcus Tregoning said of Shahin: “I think the visor certainly helped him today.
“This was an improved effort and he’s shown he stays really well.
“I don’t know where he will go next, I will need to talk to his owner (Hamdan Al Maktoum).
“In time, I think he could be a Cup horse. I’m sure he’d stay. Although he is by Kingmambo, he’s out of a Sadler’s Wells mare.”
Trainer Johnny Portman enjoyed an emotional success when Spanish Bounty stayed on well to land the Turf Italia EBF Novice Stakes by three-quarters of a length from Captain Brilliance.
The Compton handler said: “I nearly died 15 years ago when I was working for Luca Cumani and had a car accident on the way to the July Meeting.
“I finished up watching the meeting from my hospital bed and have always dreamt of having a winner here ever since. I’ve had winners at Newmarket before, but never at the July Meeting.
“I am also very pleased for his owner, John Hobhouse, who is 97 years old and rising. He also bred the horse and decided to keep him after a setback ruled out sending him to the sales.
“Spanish Bounty could now step up to Listed level and come back here at the end of the month.”
JEREMY NOSEDA
Jeremy Noseda, trainer of second-placed Captain Brilliance, said: “I am delighted with him. That was very encouraging and I think he will go on from here.”
Noseda also admitted that he was baffled by the display of Sixties Icon, who proved a very disappointing 7-4 favourite in the Princess Of Wales’s WBX.COM Stakes.
He said: “I have no idea about Sixties Icon. I can’t understand why he isn’t performing. I am very disapponted.”

MOORE HAILS SERIOUS HORSE
Traffic Guard franked the form of the Jersey Stakes when scoring in this afternoon’s Xplor Conditions Stakes.
The More Than Ready colt finished fourth to Tariq at Royal Ascot and came to the July Course to win by one and a half lengths from Drumfire.
Winning trainer Stan Moore said: “He is a serious horse. I was absolutely devastated when he ran in the Irish 2000 Guineas.
“He never travelled in that race and would never have won a seller on his run there.
“So we decided to put cheek-pieces on him and they have perked him up.
“He is a massive horse and there’s tons of improvement in him. He is a serious horse for the future.
“I will have to speak to the owner Mrs Fitri Hay about where he goes next. He is very hard to place here and we may go to Turfway Park in America where there are a couple of conditions races worth $250,000, which you don’t get here. After that we could give him a break and bring him back for the Dubai Carnival again.”
Trainer Mark Johnston was very happy with the performance of runner-up Drumfire, who was making his seasonal debut.
The Middleham handler said: “The perfect return would have been to win but that was a very satisfactory run as he was not well in with the conditions of the race. We came here because the ground, trip and course were ideal. It probably would have taken a career best from him to win today.
“He is in the totesport Mile Handicap at Goodwood and we will keep our options open.”
Race 7 - Voute Sales Handicap - Winning Quotes
MOORHOUSE LANDS THE LAST
The day ended as it had begun with a winning favourite when the 7/2 shot Moorhouse Lad landed the concluding Voute Sales Handicap.
The winner took up the running entering the final furlong and stayed on well to come home a neck to the good of Turn On The Style.
Tony Eyre, representing trainer Bryan Smart, said: “His owner Ron Hull has just had a triple heart bypass. I’m very pleased his horse has won today as he is a lovely man and this will be the first time he will have missed seeing the horse run.
“Moorhouse Lad certainly did the job today - he is a lovely little horse.
“Jamie (Spencer) rode a perfect race on him. This horse only has two gears - cantering or flat out. Jamie said the ground was quick enough for him today, although he goes on anything really.
“He ran well at Epsom and in the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot. Bryan will decide where he goes now.”
FOLLOW-UP: UAE HYDRA PROPERTIES FALMOUTH STAKES
D’ASTARTE IS LIKELY NEXT TARGET
FOR SIMPLY PERFECT
Jeremy Noseda this morning outlined an intriguing second half of the campaign for yesterday’s UAE Hydra Properties Falmouth Stakes winner Simply Perfect.
The Danehill filly looks likely to reappear in France next with the Group One Prix D’Astarte over the straight mile at Deauville (Sunday, July 29) on her agenda.
That means Noseda’s charge is unlikely to appear at Glorious Goodwood but British racegoers may well see her in the Group One Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes over the Rowley Mile at Newmarket on Saturday October 6, according to her trainer.
There is also a good chance that she will compete in North America at the end of her three-year-old campaign.
Noseda confirmed: “At this stage I would hope that that we can have a tilt at the Prix D’Astarte. We will most probably look there instead of the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood.
“We will maybe finish off the year with a crack at the Sun Chariot and then possibly head over to North America for a Grade One on the turf.
“There are several options over there and the race that particularly appeals to me is the EP Taylor (C$1 million, 10 furlong, Sunday, October 1) at Woodbine.”
Newmarket-based Noseda once again saluted Simply Perfect’s rider Johnny Murtagh for his decision to make every yard of the running, while also hailing an unsung hero Sean Travis, the filly’s regular rider at home.
He added: “Of course I was delighted with yesterday’s victory and I’ve got to give credit to Johnny for the tactics - it was a brilliant ride.
“The other person I want to mention is Sean Travis who has put in a lot of hard work with Simply Perfect. She is a tough old thing to ride and he sits on her every day and has done a great job.”
BETTING NEWS:
GAMBLE ON RIVER PROUD
Blue Square this morning reported a substantial bet on River Proud ahead of the unbeaten colt’s tilt at the TNT July Stakes.
The Proud Citizen colt caught the eye when running away with a Newbury maiden on his debut last month and trainer Paul Cole has indicated there have been no problems in his build-up to this afternoon’s Group 2.
One punter stepped in this morning and helped himself to a £20,000 to win £90,000 bet with Blue Square, who have since trimmed him to 7-2 (from 9-2). Skybet have adjusted their market in the same fashion.
In the same race Stan James have seen support for Norfolk Stakes winner Winker Watson (2s from 9-4) and Gaspar Van Wittel (10-1 from 11). Paddy Power now go 16s (from 25-1) as regards Spitfire.
Pricewise’s three selections today have triggered action with Man Of Vision now 12s (from 18-1) for success in the Kleinwort Benson Heritage Handicap with Blue Square. Skybet have shortened that one up, too, with 12-1 available, the firm having been 16s. Man Of Vision is still 14-1 with Stan James, who earlier went 16-1 about the Mick Channon-trained colt.
Also in that contest, Pricewise horse Ladies Best has been the subject of support – totesport are 13-2 from 8-1. With the same firm, Black Rock is now on offer at 8s having been 11-1 earlier this morning. Northern Jem is now 11s (from 14) with Coral and vcbet have slashed Buccellati to 16-1 (from 25).
Lucarno is now 7-2 (from 4) with Skybet for the Princess Of Wales’s WBX.COM Stakes. In the same race Sixties Icon has hardened at the head of the market – he is now 2-1 (from 9-4) with Stan James. Eradicate has not gone ignored with Coral now 10s (from 12).
In the Turf Italia E.B.F Novice Stakes, Captain Brilliance has been backed to make a winning debut. Stan James have clipped him to 7-4 (from 2s). The same firm have shaved half a point off Traffic Guard, who is now 7-2 (from 4) for victory in the Xplor Conditions Stakes. Coral have tightened up on Drumfire for that mile event – he is 15-2 from 9-1.
NO DETTORI FOR A WHILE
Frankie Dettori has given up his rides at Newmarket today due to a shoulder injury.
The jockey was unseated by Spring City on the way to the start for the Racing Post Maiden Stakes at Newmarket yesterday.
"He hurt his shoulder when he fell off yesterday," said Dettori's agent Ray Cochrane told the Press Association this morning.
"He's got plenty of time off now for it to heal now anyway!”
Dettori is now set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to the 14-day ban (July 13 - 26) for his use of the whip on Ramonti when winning the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, and other suspensions mean he will also be out of action on July 27, 29, 30 and 31 as well as August 2 and 3,
Today’s Godolphin runners will now be partnered by the following jockeys:-
Folkestone - TWILIGHT STAR (IRE)
Ted Durcan replaces Kerrin McEvoy
Lingfield - COLOURFUL SCORE (USA)
Robert Havlin replaces Kerrin McEvoy
Nottingham - PERFECTPERFORMANCE (USA) & GONGIDAS (GB)
Kerrin McEvoy replaces Frankie Dettori on both horses

The going for day two of the Ritz Club July Festival, Lanson Ladies’ Day, remains:
GOOD TO FIRM
Michael Prosser, Director of Racing and Clerk of the Course, reported: “It was dry overnight and the going remains good to firm.
“We could see some spits and spots of rain this morning and there is also a chance of a shower this afternoon.
“Looking ahead to tomorrow, the forecast is for some showers to arrive by late morning/lunchtime, which could bring around two to three millimetres of rain.”
