RITZ CLUB JULY FESTIVAL 2007 - NEWMARKET
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
CLASSIC FM DAY, WEDNESDAY, JULY 11
IT’S OPEN - OFFICIALLY
The first-phase of the redevelopment of the July Course was officially opened today by two of the greatest jockeys to have graced the turf at Newmarket - Lester Piggott and Frankie Dettori.
In a ceremony at 12 noon on the new walkway, the famous duo cut the ribbon to mark the official opening of the £10 million redevelopment behind the stands and were joined by Ric Hambro, Chairman of Newmarket Racecourses as well as Managing Director Lisa Hancock.
Lisa Hancock said: “The July Course is very, very special and has a unique atmosphere. We have retained the atmosphere and everything people love about it.
“We consulted focus groups during the design period and this included talking to racegeors.
“The semi-mature beech trees we sourced from Belgium and Holland have settled in really well and look as if they have been here for years.
“Phase two should hopefully take place in around four to five years time and will see the redevelopment of the head-on stand and the weighing room. “
Ric Hambro added: “This is a wonderful occasion.
“So much time and money has gone into this project and there has been lots of co-operation between everyone involved.
“I would like to thank the architects and the racegoers for their patience during the redevelopment.
“At Newmarket, I would like to extend my thanks to Christian Mitchell and Lisa Hancock.
“Lisa dreamt up the whole project.
“Frankie Dettori said to me yesterday that Lisa has turned Newmarket upside down. Thankfully, she has also put it back on its feet again! We will all be very sad to see her go later this year.”
On opening the new July Course, Lester Piggott commented: “I think the whole place looks really good and has improved - you can see a big difference.
“It’s one of the great racecourses.”
Frankie Dettori added: “I have been in the Newmarket area for over 20 years and have witnessed the development of the July Course from a small racecourse to the fantastic place it is today with the Newmarket Nights and the Ritz Club July Festival.
“My thanks go to Lisa Hancock and the team at Newmarket for this great redvelopment.
“My highlight at the July Course would be winning the 2000 Guineas on Island Sands in 1999 when the race was transferred from the Rowley Mile.”
Official Opening of the new-look July Course
Lester & Frankie will do the honours
At 12 noon Newmarket's two most famous residents, Lester Piggott and Frankie Dettori, will officially open the new July Course facilities following the £10m redevelopment of the area behind the stands.
Newmarket's Managing Director, Lisa, Hancock, said: "Frankie lives just up the road from the July Course and it has long been one of his favourite tracks, while Lester lives just across the Heath and had a record second to none here, including a record 10 July Cup victories. We thought they would be the ideal pair to open our new facilities."
TODAY’S CROWD UP
Today’s attendance came to 8,983.
This compares to 8,832 seen on the equivalent day last year (the second day). This year Ladies’ Day has moved to the second day, Thursday, July 12 from the first day of the Ritz Club July Festival in previous years.
Lisa Hancock, managing director of Newmarket Racecourses, commented: “We have had great feedback right across the board for the new facilities at the July Course which Lester Piggott and Frankie Dettori officially opened today, so it has been a great start to the 2007 Ritz Club July Festival.
“Despite the indifferent weather, the crowd is two per cent up on the equivalent day last year and we are now all set for Lanson Ladies’ Day tomorrow, when our advance bookings suggest a big crowd.”
GOING CHANGE
Following the running of the sixth race, the going is now: GOOD TO FIRM
GROUND
Michael Prosser, Newmarket’s Clerk of the Course and Director of Racing at Newmarket, said: “After talking to jockeys and looking at the times, the ground had clearly dried out this afternoon and that is why I changed the going description to good to firm, from good.
“We are not forecast to receive any rain until tomorrow morning and even then it should only be between one and two millimetres.
“I am delighted with the comments I have received from trainers and jockeys about the ground - they have been very complimentary.”
PRINCESS OF WALES’S WBX.COM STAKES PREVIEW
SIXTIES SEEKING REDEMPTION
SIXTIES ICON will seek to restore his reputation in tomorrow’s Princess Of Wales’s WBX.COM Stakes after a below-par performance in the Vodafone Coronation Cup at Epsom.
The Galileo colt looked destined for a brilliant year when cruising to a three-length triumph in the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes on the Rowley Mile course in May.
But he trailed home last after being sent off the 11-8 favourite in the Epsom Group One on June 1.
Trainer Jeremy Noseda said: “I am very happy with the horse. He is approaching the race in good shape. I feel that he will put his blip at Epsom behind him.”
Derby fourth Lucarno leads the opposition in the Group Two event to last year’s St Leger hero, while a resurgent Geoff Wragg saddles the in-form Ivy Creek, winner of two Listed races in the last six weeks.
Indeed the Wragg-trained colt is the only horse in the 13-strong field with winning form last time out.
Wragg said: “I’m very pleased with him this season. Whether he is up to Group Two or not, we’ll find out.
“I think he is the kind of horse who could improve a bit and now that he has overcome a back problem he could be quite useful.”
Admiral’s Cruise and Papal Bull are set to reoppose Sixties Icon, while Steppe Dancer is another older horse to be respected.
Joining Lucarno from the three-year-old ranks is the progressive Eradicate, who is stepping up from handicap company.
The field is completed by Laverock, owned by Godolphin, Corriolanus, Foxhaven, Shahin and Mashaahed
THE RACING POST BLOODSTOCK EBF FILLIES’ HANDICAP WIN QUOTES
TARTEEL DOUBLES UP WITH 8-1 SUCCESS
It was a case of father beats son as the John Dunlop-trained Tarteel came home with a length-and-a-half to spare from the Ed Dunlop-trained Graduation in the Racing Post Bloodstock EBF Fillies’ handicap.
Tarteel, a winner on the July Course over a mile last month, underlined her versatility when stepping back to seven furlongs for an 8-1 victory in the hands of Richard Hills.
She led them home up the stands’ rail - the route taken by the first three past the post.
John Dunlop said: “It was very impressive - I’m pleased with her. I think we’ve got to step her up in class now.
“I thought it was a difficult race. I said to my son Ed as we were watching that I’d be lucky to have a horse in the first three all week - so to win the first race is marvelous.”
Ed Dunlop was happy with Graduation who gave a much more encouraging display after disappointing in the Sandringham Stakes, a Listed handicap at Royal Ascot.
Ed said: “She ran very well today in what was a very competitive race. The winner is a filly who my father has always liked so this has put to bed a very poor performance at Ascot.”
More Race One Quotes
Richard Hills, the winning rider on Tarteel, said: “The ground is perfect. I rode in the Arab race and I don't think there would be any difference anywhere. It rode like beautiful ground.
“I was travelling extremely well and I think I was on the best horse. We went a nice pace and took the race with us. I think it's hard to judge it on one race.
“She's a really nice filly and she can be a bit keen, with a bit of temperament about her, but she quickened up really well and she's nice, really nice.”
John Dunlop, the winning trainer, commented: “I think we'll go into Listed class now and hope we're good enough to be competitive there.
“I thought it was a very difficult race, and I said to my son Edward we'll be lucky to get a horse in the first three all week, so to win the first is rather a plus.”

Jockeys’ Reaction to Ground
GOOD GROUND SAY THE JOCKEYS
Following the running of the first race on Classic FM day, the Racing Post EBF Fillies’ Handicap, the following jockeys gave their reaction as to the state of the ground.
Jimmy Fortune, rider of Graduation, said: “Good.”
Frankie Dettori, rider of Truly Enchanting, said: “Beautiful.”
Kerrin McEvoy, raider of Whazzis, said: “Nice ground.”
Jerry O’Dwyer, rider of Steam Cuisine, said: “It was quick enough for my horse. I’d say it’s just a bit quicker than good.”
Ryan Moore, rider of Look So, said: “Just good ground.”
William Buick, rider of Telltime, said: “Just on the quick side of good.”
Trainer John Dunlop and Richard Hills registered a 116/1 double when Shmookh landed the totesport.com Heritage Handicap. This victory followed on from the 8/1 victory of Tarteel in the opening Racing Post Bloodstock EBF Fillies’ Handicap.
The 12/1 shot Shmookh stayed on well to prevail by a neck from Off The Record.
John Dunlop said: “He didn’t get a mile last time out in the Britannia at Royal Ascot. The ground was also very fast at Royal Ascot but it’s lovely today.
“He won really well at York earlier in the year over seven furlongs and we thought we would try six furlongs today - it has worked out well.
“We’ve had two winners from two runners in the first two races today - I think we might go home now! I will be happy if we can keep up this percentage throughout the meeting!
“Shmookh is a charming horse. I don’t know where we will go now.
“We will have to see what the handicapper does. There are not many decent three-year-old handicaps.”
More Race Two Quotes
The totesport.com Handicap went to Shmookh. Richard Hills, the winning rider recording a 116/1 double, said: “I was drawn in stall 10 and went down the middle, and the ground didn't feel any different to me.”

GIVEN CHARGE HELD BACK BY GROUND
James Given, the trainer of second Off The Record, said: “Kevin (Darley) felt that had there been any dig in the ground he would have won. They would not have been able to quicken like that.
“It was frustrating the William Hill Trophy at York was cancelled as we knew he would handle the heavy ground.
“But that race didn’t happen and you can’t look backwards. Today he has ran very well in what was only his sixth race ever and he has four firsts and a second to his name.
“We have had to be a bit careful about the ground - that is why his form has all been at Southwell.
“I haven’t wanted to rush him but there has been physical and mental maturation in the last six weeks so I was comfortable coming here with him.
“He will be a horse to enjoy for many years to come. We’ll look forward to him as a four-year-old where he will run competitively against the older horses.”
Robin O’Ryan, assistant to the third Utmost Respect’s trainer Richard Fahey, said: “He got baulked at the start and so he had to use him then - no fault of Tony (Hamilton). But he has run a blinder.”
THE Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cherry Hinton Stakes
WIN QUOTES
YOU’RESOTHRILLING SCORCHES TO CHERRY HINTON WIN
You’resothrilling gained swift compensation for meeting trouble in running in the Albany Stakes by clinching a one-length victory in the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cherry Hinton Stakes.
The brother to Giant’s Causeway rattled home in the hands of Mick Kinane beating Festoso to trigger an across-the-board price cut for next year’s Stan James 1000 Guineas.
William Hill quote her at 10 (from 14), while Blue Square have gone 10s from 16/1- as did vcbet.
Stan James have trimmed You’resothrilling a couple of points to 10/1, while Paddy Power remain 12/1 and Cashmans go 8/1
Kinane said: “She jumped badly in the Albany and when I went to deliver my challenge I got shut down at Ascot. I felt she should have won.
“Today, I was a little bit down on them at half-way - four or five lengths. She is lazy and I was lucky to have the rail - if not it might have been different.
“She has a lovely temperament - nothing bothers her. She is like her brother in that she is tough.”
Paul Shanahan, representing the winning trainer Aidan O’Brien, added: “You would have to consider her unlucky at Ascot. She didn’t get the run of the race.
“I don’t think this (the Cherry Hinton) was in the plan. It wasn’t something Aidan had in mind. The Moyglare would be the aim, let’s hope. Listen would be a filly that would be aimed at the Moyglare as well.”
Asked where she stood in the juvenile fillies’ pecking order at Ballydoyle, Shanahan replied: “She has shown up here, so that would put her up there.”
More Race 3 Quotes
Michael Kinane produced the Aidan O'Brien-trained You'resothrilling with to challenge up the stands' rail to land the Group Two Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cherry Hinton Stakes.
The successful rider said: "Ted [Durcan] went and I was with him, and it was make or break. There were only two of us and we were a good bit down at halfway, so I had a bit of ground to make up, but fortunately the rail helped her.
"She's a lovely filly and as she steps up in trip she will get better. She has done it very nicely."
Harry Dunlop was over the moon after saddling 40/1 shot Festoso to finish the length runner-up You’resothrilling in the Group Two Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cherry Hinton Stakes.
The Lambourn trainer said: “She has run a cracker and has really turned the Royal Ascot form around today.
“We decided to ride her differently today and she has relaxed much better.
“She is entered in the Lowther Stakes at York and we will see what everyone wants to do.”
A further neck back in third was Elletelle, successful in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot and Shane Lyons, brother of trainer Ger Lyons, was left wondering what might have been.
Lyons said: “She missed the kick and lost three lengths at the start.
“She was the best filly in the race - that’s why she had a 3lb penalty.
“The winner also came up the stands’ side which seems to be the favoured side.
“We are very happy though and this proves her Royal Ascot win was no fluke.
“She can go wherever we want now. Ger mentioned that he might take on the colts in the Phoenix Stakes (6f Group One, Curragh, August) with her.”
Simply Perfect registered a superb pillar to post victory in the feature contest of Classic FM Day, the Group One Hydra Properties Falmouth Stakes under jockey Johnny Murtagh.
The three-year-old grey daughter of Danehill saw off challenges to record a length victory of the South African raider Irridescence with Arch Swing a neck back in third.
Trainer Jeremy Noseda said of the 6/1 winner: “She settled well today and huge credit must go to Johnny Murtagh. He wanted to make the running on her today as we knew she stayed a mile well - I let him do what he wanted to do. It was a beautiful ride as he eased the tempo halfway and then kicked on to see off all the others. They all had the chance to come round her.
“This filly is now a Group One winner at two (Fillies’ Mile at Ascot) and three. She is very tough, especially when you consider she has been on the go since before Royal Ascot last year. It was a really honest performance today.
“We will enjoy today. She is entered in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood (August 4) and 10 furlongs could well be her ideal trip.
“When we ran her in the Oaks, we hoped she’d get the trip. She is so tough, we had nothing to lose. With a better run, I think she may have been fifth.”
Johnny Murtagh added: “After going two furlongs today she was travelling lovely.
“Three out, I knew they would all have to catch me and I gave her a breather.
“In the Oaks, she was a bit keen and got knocked back more than once.
“This is a really tough filly and is now a Group One winner at two and three. Since I rode her to finish third in the 1000 Guineas, she has improved both mentally and physically.”

MURTAGH GOES TO THE FRONT
Simply Perfect made every yard of the running to take the Group One UAE Hydra Properties Falmouth Stakes under a canny ride from Johnny Murtagh.
The winning jockey said: "I didn't think there was going to be much pace in the race with Speciosa coming out, and I thought she might get it easy in front.
“Jeremy was a little afraid she might be a bit keen, but I said no, she's never been from the front before and she'll be looking round her.
"She was all go and when I got to the three-marker I knew, she wasn't going to get beat today!"
Jeremy Noseda was full of praise for his jockey after Simply Perfect's all-the-way victory.
The successful handler said: "Great, great credit to Johnny - he said that he wanted to make it and thought she would settle well in front. It was a brilliant ride. He had the plan and I said, if you really believe that, then I'm with you.
"This filly is very tough. This is her day. He's ridden a great race, but they all had their chance to come and beat her and she fought them all off.
“She deserves a great amount of credit and is a Group One winner at two and three. A big thank you to Johnny Murtagh for his part in today's victory."

DE KOCK PONDERS NEXT MOVE WITH IRRIDESCENCE
Mike De Kock was pleased with Irridescence after she bounced back to take second place in the UAE Hydra Properties Falmouth Stakes.
The six-year-old mare disappointed in the Dubai Duty Free at Nad Al Sheba on her last start and De Kock said before today’s Group 1 that he’d be happy if his charge could make the first four.
The South African trainer assessed: “I’m delighted. The winner got a soft lead and, while we started to get back at her at the end, it was too late. But it was a great ride on the winner from Johnny Murtagh.
“Irridescence is owned by Team Valor and they are American-based - they’ve set their hearts on the Beverley D. But then again we’ve got Glorious Goodwood to think about. So we will see and finalise plans in the next few days.”
John Oxx, trainer of the third-placed Arch Swing, said: “She has run very well - there was just not enough pace. .
“The winner slowed it down a bit in front and she (Arch Swing) found herself with four lengths to make up.
“She got back to a length and a neck but she could have done with a stronger pace and a little less to do.
“She hasn’t been a lucky filly - there is always some little excuse. But she has run very well. She is a very consistent filly and doesn’t let us down.
“Next she will probably go to the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown.”
John Gosden, trainer of fourth-placed Nannina - the 5-2 favourite - said: “She has run here three times and never performed on the track. She will go straight to the Nassau at Goodwood (on August 4) where she ran a blinder last year after slightly disappointing here.”

LAST GASP ENTRY PAYS OFF FOR SWINBANK
Alan Swinbank was grateful for a last-minute entry for Turbo Linn, who bolted up by four lengths from Under The Rainbow in the H.B.L.B Lancashire Oaks.
The Yorkshire trainer explained: “I put the entry in at two minutes to 12 after she worked very well with Alfie Flits on Saturday morning.”
Before this Flat season the Turbo Speed four-year-old had made her mark in bumpers, being unbeaten in that sphere between October 29, 2006, and April 13, 2007 when successful at Aintree - her fifth successive victory.
She landed a maiden at Catterick last month and made a remarkable step-up in grade to land odds of 6/1 under Neil Callan, remaining unbeaten in seven career starts.
Swinbank said: “We went the bumper route because she would not go in the stalls.
“This performance doesn’t surprise me. Wherever she has gone, she has always run well. She has done it well and is a good horse.
“Before today I was going to maybe look abroad for her next. But we may keep her at home now - the Irish St Leger is a possibility.
“The good thing about this filly is I’ve got a yearling full sister to her. The whole family has been good. The mother has won four and the grandmother has won seven.”

TURBO KICKS IN
The Alan Swinbank-trained Turbo Linn, previously unbeaten in five bumper races and a Catterick maiden, turned the Group Two HBLB Lancashire Oaks into a procession, powering home by four lengths under Neil Callan to make it seven out of seven.
The victorious rider said: "She surprised me with how well she picked up. We went off a nice good pace, and half-way up the straight we steadied up a bit, and I was a little bit worried because she was racing a bit lazily with me.
"But once I got her wound up, and just waited for Frankie to go and make his move in front of me, Kerrin dropped away from the rail and I had enough room to pick up. But I was surprised with how well she picked up when she did get her split.
"She's got any amount of improvement there and she shot three of four lengths clear - she was just idling in the last 50 years. I was very, very impressed with her.
"I've been riding for Alan [Swinbank] for a couple of years and I always respect his judgement. He knows what he's got at home, and when he told me she had worked well with Alfie Flits, it gave me confidence."
Race 5 - H.B.L.B. Lancashire Oaks - Placed Quotes
RUNNER-UP SUITED BY GROUND
Trainer Barry Hills was very pleased with effort of Under The Rainbow, beaten four lengths by Turbo Linn in the Group Two H.B.L.B. Lancashire Oaks. The race had been rescheduled to Newmarket following the abandonment of last Saturday’s card at Haydock Park.
Hills said: “She ran a smashing race.
“She really wants this sort of ground and Mick (Kinane) said she liked it out there today.
“Since she joined me this season (the filly was previously in the care of Peter Chapple-Hyam) the ground has not really been right for her.
“She could now come back here for the Aphrodite Stakes and I think there is a Listed race at Goodwood which may also be suitable for her.”
Race 6 - Ian MacNicol Memorial Strutt & Parker EBF Maiden Stakes - Winning Quotes
RIO GIVES GODOLPHIN FIRST JUVENILE WIN OF 2007
Rio De La Plata provided the Godolphin operation with its first two-year-old winner of the year when collecting the Ian MacNicol Memorial Strutt & Parker EBF Maiden Stakes under Frankie Dettori.
The winner soon led and ran on well inside the final furlong to record a decisive five-length success over Fifteen Love.
Winning trainer Saeed bin Suroor commented: “Frankie rode this horse four days ago in his last piece of work and he said that Rio De La Plata had really improved since his first run.
“The step up in distance to seven furlongs also helped him today.
“We have no definite plans, although we will look for a Group race for him now. Being by Rahy, he should stay further.
“Some of our two-year-olds are really coming now. We will hopefully have more two-year-old runners towards the end of this month and into August.”
Lord Grimthorpe, racing manager to second-placed Fifteen Love’s owner Khalid Abdulla, said: “That was a nice introduction. Richard Hughes said he was a little bit green but that he was very pleased with him.”
Simon Callaghan, assistant to his father Neville, said of the third-placed Exhibition, “He ran very well and will improve for the run. He did every thing right first time out. Jamie Spencer said he travelled like a really nice horse.”
RACE 7 THE RACING POST MAIDEN
WIN QUOTES
URBAN SPIRIT ON TARGET
Urban Spirit put up a good performance to secure the Racing Post Maiden by a neck from the favourite Jack Junior.
The Barry Hills-trained colt hung alarmingly left late on but just did enough to emerge as the 8-1 winner.
Hills said: “I don’t know why he did that as he is an uncomplicated horse. But he is still a baby of a horse. He is growing and maturing and wants more racing.
“He has got the physique and could strengthen up and improve. That was a good performance.”
Brian Meehan, trainer of the second-placed Jack Junior, said: “He has run another good race.”
Third Set put up a pleasing performance to collect the final race on Classic FM Day, the Classic FM Handicap.
The 12/1 winner came home well up the stands’ side in the final furlong under jockey Steve Drowne in the colours of his tennis-loving owner, John Livock, to score by two lengths from Ashes Regained.
Successful trainer Roger Charlton said: “Third Set deserved to win a race.
“He has not been suited by the soft ground this season.
“The horse had always threatened he could win and his first try at a mile has worked out well,
“I don’t have any specific plan for him. We will try and find another suitable race for him.”
Charlie Hills, assistant to his father Barry, said of the runner-up Ashes Regained: “We’re delighted with the way he ran. He ran a cracker from his draw and is a horse that’s improving.”
Willie Musson, trainer of the third-placed Marajaa, said: “I was very happy with the run. He has been running consistently well but the horses on his side just didn’t carry him forward. Hopefully, he will get his head back in front some time.”
THREE JOCKEYS SUSPENDED
Luke Morris, rider of Fealeview Lady in the opening Racing Post Bloodstock EBF Fillies’ Handicap, has been suspended for three days (July 22 to 24 inclusive) for careless riding. The stewards judged he had allowed his mount to drift left without correction, causing interference shortly after the start.
Adreian McCarthy, partner of Visconti, in the Ian MacNicol Memorial Strutt & Parker EBF Maiden Stakes, received a two-day ban (July 22 & 23) for careless riding as regards interference to Strategic Mission.
A de Vries, rider of Somra in the opening Arab race, was suspended for three days - (July 22 to 24 inclusive) - after letting his mount drift across to the rail which resulted in interference.
GROUND IS GOOD FOR START OF FESTIVAL
Newmarket director of racing Michael Prosser walked the track this morning and pronounced it ‘good ground’ ahead of the Ritz Club July Festival.
“The official going stick reading is 8.1 and we have perfect good ground.
“We have had a spit and a spot of rain so far this morning - a light drizzle. But the wind is strong enough for it to have made no impression.
“The overcast nature shouldn’t last and the clouds are meant to clear by late morning and temperatures should reach 21 degrees Celsius this afternoon.
“Regarding ground enquiries, the phone was lively on Monday and Tuesday but has been fairly inactive this morning.
“We missed the rain on Monday and the forecast for Thursday is now for two to three millimetres, down from five to six millimetres.
“It is meant to be dry overnight with the possibility of showers from late tomorrow morning to the end of the afternoon. It is not expected to be significant rainfall - two or three millimetres, as I’ve mentioned.
“On Friday, we could have showers in the morning - they are forecasting three to four millimetres - but those are meant to clear away leaving sunny spells in the afternoon.
“If the forecast proves to be correct then I think we will remain pretty close to good ground throughout the three days.
“The other point to note is that the full mile we will be using has not been raced on since August last year.”
BETTING NEWS
SUPPORT FOR NAHOODH
Paddy Power reported intriguing support for the debutante Nahoodh in the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cherry Hinton Stakes (2.35pm).
The Clodovil filly is the only unraced horse in the six-furlong Group Two but she is clearly highly regarded judged on her strength in the market.

GEORGE WASHINGTON AMONG 24 TOP-CLASS ACCEPTORS FOR THE BGC SUSSEX STAKES
*ASIATIC BOY PLEASING CONNECTIONS AHEAD OF GROUP ONE TEST*
Last season’s champion miler George Washington heads a total of 24 horses remaining after the forfeit stage for the £300,000 Group One BGC Sussex Stakes at Goodwood on Wednesday, August 1, 2007.
The brilliant Aidan O’Brien-trained colt, who scored a breathtaking victory in the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot last term, may drop back to a mile in the BGC Sussex Stakes after finishing a good third in the 10-furlong Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown on July 7.
The BGC Sussex Stakes takes place on day two of the Glorious Goodwood Festival, which runs from Tuesday, July 31, to Saturday, August 4, 2007.
George Washington could face stiff competition from the formidable South African raider and UAE Triple Crown winner Asiatic Boy, who worked on Newmarket’s July Course last week.
Trainer Mike de Kock’s assistant Trevor Brown revealed today: “He’s going to run in the BGC Sussex Stakes and with three weeks to go we’re happy with his progress and looking forward to it.
“He’s in full work and he had his first proper grass gallop with Irridescence last week just to show him the lawn and I’m pretty sure he’ll be visiting the racecourse (Newmarket) at least twice before he races.
“We’re hoping to get him down to Goodwood as well. I would say it’s 90% that we’ll get him down there before the race as long as his training goes to plan.”
The Mike de Kock-trained four-year-old, still regarded as a three-year-old in southern hemisphere terms, won all four starts from seven to nine furlongs on dirt at the Dubai International Racing Carnival this year, including an imperious nine and a half-length verdict over Jack Junior in the Group Two UAE Derby at Nad Al Sheba on March 31.
Brown commented: “Ability-wise I have no doubts with him and I think he can match any three-year-old in the world. He puts in some good work at home on the grass but you can never tell if they’re going to handle the turf until you’re actually in the race itself.
“He’s matured and he’s actually grown - if you can believe that. He’s a much bigger horse than he was earlier on in the year. I’m very happy with him. He’s a lot stronger and is going the right way so it’s all systems go.”
Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor has saddled two winners of the Group One BGC Sussex Stakes (1999 Aljabr & 2001 Noverre) and he has four remaining entries headed by Group One Queen Anne Stakes hero Ramonti, who could line up alongside Group Two winner Echo Of Light, Notability and Blue Ksar.
Sir Michael Stoute could rely on Group Two Betfred Mile winner Jeremy, who drifted markedly to the right in the closing stages of the Queen Anne Stakes and went down by a short-head to Ramonti. Stoute has three BGC Sussex Stakes wins on the board with Sonic Lady (1986), Zilzal (1989) and Among Men (1998).
Proclamation won the Group One BGC Sussex Stakes for Jeremy Noseda in 2005 and the Newmarket trainer could be represented by Soldier’s Tale, winner of the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes over six furlongs at Royal Ascot on June 23. Stablemate Rahiyah, third in the French 1,000 Guineas, has also been left in.
As well as George Washington, the Ballydoyle camp has Excellent Art, who followed an unlucky fourth in the French 2,000 Guineas in May with a battling neck victory from Duke Of Marmalade in the Group One St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 19.
O’Brien’s six entries also include St James’s Palace Stakes third and French 2,000 Guineas victor Astronomer Royal, Group Two Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial winner Archipenko and Trinity College.
Nannina returned to form when emphatically winning the Group Two Windsor Forest Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 20, and could take her chance after running today at Newmarket alongside fellow dual Group One scorer Dutch Art who was beaten only a length and three quarters when fourth in the St James’s Palace Stakes.
The Jim Bolger-trained Creachadoir was runner-up in both the French and Irish 2,000 Guineas, while Arch Swing, trained by John Oxx, filled the same berth in the Stan James 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket. Fellow Irish raiders Decado and He’s A Decoy complete the 10-strong entry from the Emerald Isle.
Court Masterpiece gave Ed Dunlop his first BGC Sussex Stakes win in 2006 and the trainer has the progressive Munaddam still engaged. The gelding is owned by Hamdan Al Maktoum, who could also be represented by the Michael Jarvis-trained filly Yaqeen.
The John Hills-trained Dark Islander won the Grade Two Oak Tree Derby at Santa Anita in October, while the Gerard Butler-trained veteran Nayyir is a dual winner of the Group Two Lennox Stakes at Goodwood and was runner-up to Soviet Song in the 2004 BGC Sussex Stakes.

TOBOSA AMONG CRACKING 75-STRONG ENTRY FOR totesport MILE
GAY KELLEWAY AIMS VORTEX AT £150,000 GOODWOOD PRIZE
Impressive totesport.com Silver Bowl scorer Tobosa has been allotted 9st 7lb for the £150,000 totesport Mile, which has attracted a superb 75-strong entry, details of which are revealed today, Wednesday, July 11.
The ultra-competitive mile contest for three-year-olds and upwards, the richest handicap of its type in the racing calendar, is run this year on Friday, August 3, the fourth day of Glorious Goodwood 2007, and regularly features horses who have or go on to prove themselves Group-class performers.
Having defied top weight to score at Haydock on May 26 in fine style by two and a half lengths from Annemasse (7st 13lb), conceding 15lb to the runner-up, Tobosa was pitched into Group One company for his next outing in the Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly on July 8, when he ran with credit to finish fifth behind recent French Derby hero Lawman. He has been installed as 10/1 joint-favourite with totesport to land the Goodwood prize.
Trainer William Jarvis revealed today: “Tobosa has been given an entry in the totesport Mile, although at this stage he would not be a definite starter. Saying that, it is an incredibly valuable prize, and it would be great to have a fancied runner in the race.
“He showed his true turn of foot when he won at Haydock on quick ground - it was far too soft for him in France last time and he never had a chance. I think he’s a very classy horse and one that will get better as he gets older.
“I think his weight of 9st 7lb is fair enough. He would not have a lot in hand off that mark, but his form is very good and he is entitled to carry that weight. We will keep our options open with Tobosa and ground conditions will determine where we go with him.”
The evergreen eight-year-old Vortex (9st 7lb) - a 25/1 chance with the sponsors for the totesport Mile - ran an absolute blinder under top weight to take third place behind Royal Oath in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot on June 20, and handler Gay Kelleway says her stable star is on course to appear at Goodwood on August 3.
“The totesport Mile is certainly on the agenda for Vortex, and if the ground is quick he must hold every chance,” the Newmarket handler explained today.
“He ran a cracker in the Royal Hunt Cup, but unfortunately the draw beat him. He’s come out of the race in top form though and I hope Johnny Murtagh will be back on board at Goodwood.
“Vortex must be the most consistent horse in training - we have taken him all around the world and he never lets us down. The Bunbury Cup [Newmarket on Friday, July 13] is the plan first and he will most likely have another run before the totesport Mile.”
The weights for the totesport Mile are headed by Dark Islander (9st 12lb), who landed his biggest success in the Grade Two Oak Tree Derby at Santa Anita in October. The John Hills-trained four-year-old is 16/1 with totesport to take the Goodwood contest although has not been seen since disappointing in the Grade One Hollywood Derby at Hollywood Park on November 26. He is also entered in the Group One BGC Sussex Stakes at the course two days earlier.
The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Ea (8st 3lb) looks on the upgrade having chased home Eddie Jock in the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot on June 21. The three-year-old son of Dynaformer is the 10/1 joint-favourite with totesport to go one place better at Goodwood on August 3.
Pinpoint (9st 11lb), trained by Walter Swinburn, went down by the narrowest of margins trying to concede a stone to Supaseus (8st 13lb) in a valuable nine-furlong handicap at Newmarket on May 6, and ran well upped to Group Three class when fourth to Take A Bow in the 10-furlong Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown on May 31. He is 12/1 to add totesport Mile glory to his CV, while his victim at Newmarket is a 14/1 chance.
Having captured the Bunbury Cup on three occasions, the James Bethell-trained Mine (9st 8lb) is one of the toughest handicappers in training and recorded his first success at Listed level in the Bank of Scotland Corporate Stakes at Haydock on June 7. He is sure to give supporters a run for their money at 201/ with totesport.
Ordnance Row (9st 5lb, 14/1) held off the fast-finishing Colorado Rapid (8st 3lb, 12/1) to take the totescoop6 Handicap at Sandown on July 7, a smart display from the Richard Hannon-trained four-year-old giving away 16lb to his year younger rival, with Pride Of Nation (8st 13lb), Mutanaseb (8st 2lb), Lundy’s Lane (8st 8lb), Plum Pudding (8st 10lb), Killena Boy (8st 5lb), Montpellier (8st 3lb), Prince Of Thebes (8st 1lb), Laa Rayb (8st 2lb) and Blue Trojan (7st 11lb) all in behind.
Unshakable (8st 5lb), a fine servant to trainer Bob Jones, ran an excellent third behind Ordnance Row at Sandown. The eight-year-old gelding recorded his biggest win in the 2005 totesport Mile when carrying 8st 1lb and is 20/1 with the sponsors for a repeat win.
The 2004 Lincoln Handicap winner Babodana (9st 2lb, 20/1) is the stalwart of the Mark Tompkins stable and ran his best race of the season on his favoured soft surface to chase home Winged Cupid in a Listed event at Windsor on June 30. Early March (9st 5lb, 14/1) showed a high level of form in France for Criquette Head-Maarek and ran with a glimmer of promise on his British debut for John Gosden when sixth behind Mine at Haydock on June 7.
Prince Of Light (9st, 25/1), is no stranger to success at Goodwood, having landed the 2006 Listed Blue Square Thoroughbred Stakes and his maiden at the picturesque West Sussex track. His handler, Mark Johnston, is also represented by Champery (9st, 16/1), set a more realistic target having come up against Notnowcato, Authorized and George Washington in the Coral Eclipse Stakes at Sandown last time.
The Godolphin duo Hinterland and Count Trevisio are both on the 9st mark and have shown high-class handicap form at their best. They are available at 16/1 and 33/1 respectively for the totesport Mile.
An interesting possible contender is the Barry Hills-trained Desert Dew (8st 11lb, 12/1), beaten only two lengths by Admiralofthefleet in the Group Three Dee Stakes at Chester in May and last seen finishing a close third behind Zaham in the Listed Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 21.
The Irish entry is Jumbajukiba (9st 2lb), trained by Jessica Harrington, who stayed on well to land the valuable Budweiser Guinness Handicap at the Curragh on July 1. He is 16/1 to provide the Irish with a first success in the totesport Mile.
Damian Walker, Racecourse PR Manager for totesport, said: “At this stage, we cannot split Tobosa and Ea at the head of the market for the totesport Mile.
“Connections thought enough of Tobosa to run him in the 2000 Guineas and he is clearly a very progressive horse, while Ea looked extremely unlucky at Royal Ascot in the Britannia Handicap when the draw was all against him.”
